Dining Experience POV | Greeting Tables as a Restaurant Server
*In-Depth Training for Servers by Servers*

The greeting in a service industry is often underestimated, yet its significance cannot be overstated. It sets the tone for the ensuing relationship between the service provider and the customers. Even though these customers might be fleeting and you may never cross paths with them again, the quality of your interaction during the initial greeting can significantly impact the entire service experience.
As you embark on this guide, the goal is to provide detailed insights into the art of greeting guests. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance your understanding of the nuanced nature of relationships formed in the service industry.
    Let's delve into the specifics.
    A. The Importance of a Thoughtful Greeting
After customers are seated, it's crucial to assess the situation before approaching. If they are engaged in conversation, especially in a large group or after a reunion, interrupting might lead to an awkward introduction. Timing is key, and being aware of the social dynamics at the table is essential.
    B. Strategic Approach
Approaching the table promptly, typically within a minute or two, is advised for several reasons. Firstly, time is money in the service industry, and efficiency is paramount. Secondly, customers quickly wonder if their server is aware of their presence, underlining the importance of a timely greeting.
    C. Intentional and Present
The initial approach is not a rushed encounter. It should be intentional, without distractions, as first impressions are enduring. A flustered or preoccupied demeanor may convey stress and a lack of capability to serve effectively.
    D. Tailoring the Greeting
Adapting your greeting based on the nature of the group is vital. Casual and friendly greetings might suit a bachelorette party, while a more formal tone may be suitable for a business luncheon or a romantic dinner. Flexibility is key, but having a general template streamlines the process.
    E. General Template for Greetings
"I'm Patrick, I'll be taking care of you. How y'all doing?" The choice of words may vary, but the structure remains consistent. A moment is allowed for a genuine response, fostering dialogue and establishing rapport.
    F. Importance of Rapport
Rapport is established through non-verbal communication during the initial 30 seconds. The guests are getting a feel for the server, and this foundational connection influences the entire dining experience.
    G. Elevator Speech in Upscale Settings
In upscale establishments, where more time is dedicated to each table, an elevator speech about the restaurant's concept and unique offerings can be beneficial. This helps educate guests, setting expectations for a more tailored experience.
    H. Role of the Server
A server is not merely a task performer but a facilitator, making the dining experience easy and enjoyable. Understanding this role helps guide and tailor the experience for guests.
    I. Relationship Dynamics
Perceiving oneself as a host, guide, and facilitator establishes equality in the service relationship. Mutual respect enhances the overall experience, emphasizing the server's role in delivering value.
In conclusion, the greeting is a critical element that shapes the trajectory of the entire service experience. By understanding the nuances, adapting to various scenarios, and building rapport, servers can elevate the dining experience for their guests. The guide provides a comprehensive template while emphasizing the importance of flexibility and genuine interaction.

I came back here to say thank you.
I watched a lot of your videos Last May & June because I had just been promoted to server and these videos really helped me to become better AND de-stress because I was very stressed out at the time.
Today, I still serve at the restaurant I was promoted in and I’m so relieved to say that I’m 10x the server I was when I started, and these videos really offered me a breath of fresh air when I really needed it.
I used to have nightmares about being weeded at work and I would stress _out_ when I knew it was going to be busy because I always felt like I wasn’t going to be a good enough server and I was going to let a lot of people down or I would make a serious mistake and be in a lot of trouble, but I no longer have those feelings because I have found out what it means to be an effective server and how to overcome the issues that occasionally arise on the job.
I really can’t believe I’m saying this, but…I kinda look forward to going to work now most days. Some nights it feels like I’m locked in and everyone’s being processed at our optimum efficiency even when it’s busy.
Once again, thank you for your hard work and your content. To anyone reading this who needs to hear this: No matter what, KEEP GOING, you *will* get better. I promise you, if you’re stressing about parts of your job, identify what you believe are the issues, e.g. Taking orders, talking to people, organizing, etc, focus on those and make it your mission to get better at them. I found out after a few weeks that my ability to put orders into our computer system was holding me up from getting people served and so I took pictures of the computer screens and practiced putting in orders on the computer to be fast AND efficient and after a few days of doing that, I was getting people served TWICE as fast. Believe me, once your identify your problem areas and become efficient at them, there is deep satisfaction in a job well-done.

Wow! This is absolutely amazing to hear and seriously appreciate you taking the time to write this out. Stoked that you clearly grasp what all this content is about: efficiency.
I tell everyone serving is a game of output - the more a server can handle and execute, the more a server can earn.
"There is a deep satisfaction in a job well-done." Isn't that the truth? Serving is not my career, and I recognize for most it's temporary, but I cannot emphasize enough the value of learning to do it well. It truly is the difference between this job sucking and actually being pretty fun (and lucrative!).
For anyone else reading, FYI I've recently moved much of my content over to www.realservertraining.com I don't really promote it but want you to know where to find this kind of training.
And to OP: thank you again for investing some time into being a good server. Stay in touch! thisispatrickmurphy.com

Love the bloopers in the beginning lol. Just started serving on 1/02/2024 and these videos have helped me so much with my confidence and flow. My boss is Japanese and can't give me in depth directions due to language barrier. "Weeded" must be a southern term for upset, never heard that before.

Im starting my seasonal server job again and I noticed last summer that when I walk ,when i put my heel on the ground my whole body shakes and the drinks shake, sometimes the drinks spill even when on the tray. This is why I must always see at the tray, instead of forward like other servers.I work on a Bar-restaurant.Can you give me tips on this if you understand?

I didn't plan on watching this video to be snarky, but grabbing stemware by the bulb, even if it is water glasses is a big fine dining no-no. I'm surprised to see that in a video teaching people how to be better servers.

    • @RealServerTraining
      @RealServerTraining  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Correct. Fortunately this isn't a fine dining establishment. It's a fairly nice restaurant - somewhat upscale - but ultimately a higher-volume, somewhat casual setting. 100% of my content is geared towards servers working in these kinds of restaurants - which is the overwhelming majority of restaurants - and this standard of service is more than acceptable.

All I learned from this is that if you’re big and threatening and hairy and use your hands a lot then people are going to just nod their head, it’s a survival thing, has nothing to do with what he said.
