Thank you! I've been binge-watching your videos today as I prepare for my four year old's district assessment coming up in February. I've already hired 2 advocates to help me navigate next steps, but your short, well-laid out videos, have been really helpful as I seek to understand the different between self-contained for mod/sev vs inclusive gen ed settings with pull out supports. Appreciate the free content and value you put out into the world!

Thank you Luke! I always do my best to pay close attention, and am always nodding in agreement because what is said about my son is what I see when I’m working with him. Unfortunately, the questions arise after the iep meeting has ended.

Could you do a video about school's not providing special accommodations even if the child has it in their IEP that they need these accommodations but the school is not allowing these accommodations that are in the child's IEP because the shchool is using Covid as the excuse for why they are not allowing these accommodations

  • @nvaranavage

Because honestly I don't think the schools really don't want to or are willing to spend the money for what the child needs.

    • @historicalcucumber
      @historicalcucumber ปีที่แล้ว +4

So true, I've found that schools only want to do what they want to do even if they know adding more will help the child....you ask for a new accommodation and they want 8 weeks to collect "data" and then after EVERY time they deny it, but if they want to change something they can make it happen in the blink of an eye. I've hired an iep advocate because this has been happening for years and years now...

Exactly right. I'm willing to bet that a majority of parents would keep their kids in district if the district / state property funded the program.

Lemme tell you I had an IEP and I would say it set me back alot without me knowing in school I for 1 did not get homework SINCE DAMN NEAR THE THIRD GRADE (ik every kids dream right) but honestly that was bad for me because once I left school I did not think about school I went outside and was just a youngin ina hood who learned the hard way alot of times and on top of that what ever your iep says about u they stick that on you FOR LIFE not just for school FOR LIFE they will look into your school history and see the type of person u started as vs how u actually are in the present time and place I was veiwed as a behavior issue to most teachers and alot of them saw more of my issues vs tryna help combat that I had teachers who wanted to be I told you so instead of ima try my very best to change your perception they just kinda let me live in my tomfoolery instead and as a young kid u don't see it like that u just see it as WELL THIS SCHOOL SO I got my diploma snacked and couldn't walk the field with my graduation class instead I got to sit in a bleacher at another school and watch my friends get their diploma while I wasn't even allowed to attend public schools because I was viewed as a problematic kid and sent to alternative school I get that my actions in school play a major role and I can't say that I was always trying my best cuz that would be a lie they said if I wanted to graduate I would have to complete an extra 2 years and I was a pot head and I started smoking very young so the schools said DRUG PROGRAM THIS KID cuz my friends and me decided to smoke weed in the school bathroom we did that alot and we weren't the only ones we were the ones that got caught tho so I took that to the chin and went to them drug programs from 8th grade to 12th I was in program after program and I got fed up cuz I kept smoking and they wanted me to stop u tell a kid to stop they gon keep doin it for 1 for 2 they said OH SINCE U SMOKE U GOTTA PASS A DRUG PROGRAM ENTIRELY TO EVEN CONSIDER GRADUATION so that would have added an additional year on top of my grad year that's 3 extra years of high school I would have had to to so me being me back then I GAVE UP AND SAID EFF THIS SCHOOL ILL GO TO ANOTHER ONE THINKIN THEY WOULDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE LAST SCHOOL and boii they was on it more then the any school so I dropped out all together damn near before the middle of the school year and I've been getting. To it since I always wanted my diploma but if u ask the school system I was in I didn't want it bad enough for what it's worth tho I was a very smart person in school I just didn't show that in paper book work I was a very verbal and active participant in class but once that pen and paper was in my face I said nah ian doin allat give me Partial credit and that they did and note alot of bad grades happen because teachers get petty so they will give u failing grades because of situations and egos not because u deserve that grade so if I was to look at my GPA on paper witch I never even got to see in school idk how kids got theirs I never not once even SAW MINE and that's due to my "IEP" THE schools looked at it and said oh yea add more ways to not help this kid so we have an excuse to use when he fails in life instead of trying to make a difference and to say to someone u should have known better u can't get mad at someone who don't know any better but u can get mad at someone who dose aka the school system I was in and I had some great teachers along the way as well I can't take thst from some of my teachers and I PASSED THEIR CLASSES BELIEVE THAT because they believed in me but the amount of them that didn't surpassed the good people so take what I said here as a lesson IF THE SCHOOLS TREAT U UNFAIRLY TELL YOUR PEOPLES TO FIGHT SMARTER FOR U NOT HARDER MY DUKES FAUGHT TOOTH AND NAIL FOR ME UNTIL I DROPPED OUT and I appreciate her for that forever because in school I didn't and I didn't understand that keep trying I gave up in school but made up for it cuz I got a hustle like a farm mule In me and I know how to live a good life that don't mean I got a perfect life tho education don't just come from school remember that u never stop learning it's more how will u take heed of this knowledge and how will u make use of it properly

They don’t seem to be keep teaching him, his IEP teachers, the things that he should be learning in his classroom. It’s more like he hast to stick to what they are testing him on instead of testing the children so much. Why are they not teaching them? I’m worried about this. I see the change in the school system

Im in iep and i learn nothing in there and i am not happy at all. I want to leave but my mom asks the school but then she is always told that i need to be in it and my mom is not a talker. Today was my first day of school for 8th grade and they put me in history iep and i was not supposed to be in there at all they just put me in there and no one in my family know about this they all said i was not supposed to be in there. i just want to be fully out iep stress me out and i have lost all my friend’s because of it. Now people make fun of me everyday because i’m in iep. The only reason that i’m in there is because i have social anxiety so they want me in a small group but that is just making it worse.

    • @verisaredoff4386

Now i have been in school for a while i have been taking out of iep!!! I have all A and B’s with no help and i’m learning this year! No one make fun of me anymore and i’m very much happier and have more friends and my social anxiety has even gotten better being in regular classes it has not been this good scene i was in second grade! I have homework now so that’s not fun but at least i know that i’m learning now! My freind that is in iep is trying to get out of iep math but they just thought her how to divide fractions when we are on algebraic expressions which is a huge difference so if she gets out she will need some help. But not being in iep makes me much happier all the kids that want to be in iep say that because they don’t want homework so they can play video games or some or so they don’t have to put much effort into there school work to get a A.

Many IEP teams disregard diagnoses from neurologists, or refuse (this took me 4 years to convince the school to retest my 15year old after he was held back to repeat 8th grade - after noticing that his grades on the report card did not match what was in the teacher's gradebook, yes, they altered his grades to try to push him through into high school) to do academic testing to identify if there are learning disabilities getting in the way of the disorder, not to mention I'm always being told that in the state of VA the sped IEP team are not required to take an outside assessment of a disorder into consideration for accomodations. It's mindboggling.

    I have
    -DMD
    -ADHD
    -Severe Anxiety Disorder
I currently have a 504 plan and my mother requested an IEP so they put me into title 1 until January 12, and see if my NWEA scores goes up and if not I’ll get one, but if not my mother will probably force them to test me. Even now I still get extra help so there’s this class (not title 1) it’s made just for IEP and 504 Plan students and it’s where the case manager works and 2 para’s (they both come in to help me and some other people) and I do some of my work there and do some of my assessments!!
-NWEA is New Hampshire state testing btw

This may be a dumb question but, do the special education coordinators (special education services) work for the school or for the students? Also, do the rules differ from state to state? I’m in Texas. Thank you. I hope to get a response.

    • @refinedisabilities
      @refinedisabilities 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi @qsb2033 I am a retired special education teacher in Dallas. I now advocate for children with disabilities from the outside. I know you asked this question 2 years ago. I hope it was answered. First, there is no such thing as a dumb question. All questions request more knowledge, and knowledge is power. Special education coordinators, teachers, executive directors of special education for the district all work for the school district (aka the state, under TEA). This one of the best questions you could ask! The only person(s) who really have your child's best interests in mind is you as the parent. I was a parent at the 504 table myself, so I KNOW what you are asking. I know the teachers are going to say how much they love your child- I sure did love my students! But they work for the school district, so they can't always tell the whole truth (to put it mildly). What they don't tell you is the regular teachers only get 1 hour of training in special education a year. The special ed teachers "Should" have M.Eds in special education but they don't. The certification test for special education is super easy. So they don't know much either. This is true for all 50 states, except a few states are better than average. HTH (I don't mean to take up the thread! The content here is good!

I am thinking of filing a complaint with the Department of Education that's where schools get the funding to educate our children with IEPs. Just to make sure they are not giving me an excuse. Some Schools need to have incentives to provide proper education even though they are receiving funding. The Department of Education will look into it.

That is totally an inappropriate and illegal practice. They can not implement an IEP without the parent's consent. You as a parent have a right to consent, reject or amend your child's IEP. If they continue to do this, get a special education advocate to review the IEP before you sign off.

I went through school in Ohio K-12 and repeated the 2nd and 3rd grades and that did not help me because they never realized that I could not read well. It was hard when I was in college but I made it through that. Returned to college and completed two more undergrad programs. A few years ago I wanted to go to nursing school I was having a hard time with the entrance exam. So I talk to my Dr and explained what was going on. She diagnosed me with ADHD and treated me. I went back to the basics. Reading, writing, and math. I used online videos for children and that help me fill in the pieces. If you hold him back but don't correct the real problem it won't do him any good. Get someone to help where he is now starting with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade reading and math. I know he can doit.

THE PROBLEM ABOUT IEP IS THAT SOMETIMES IS A GROUP OF DISRESPECTFUL . MY SON HAS AN IEP HAD MANY MEEETINGS BUNCH IF RUDE PEOPLE. THEY HIRE THE PEOPLE THEY WANT ARPUND AND THE FACT THE THEY ASSIGN YOU A SOCIAL WORKER INSTEAD OF A CONSEULOR LIKE EVERY STUDENT SAYS ENOUGH. ! THE PROBLEM IN SCHOOL IS THAT MEAN TEACHERS AND SCHOOL SOCIETY ONLY WANT A PRINCIPLE WHO WILL BACK THEM UP WITH THEIR BAD DECISIONS . THEY DISRESPECT PARENTS

    • @vanessawortham3002

What you are saying is so true. So I look for as much information, read every page of the IEP, and read the Parent's Rights and Responsibilities, and the School's Policies and Responsibilities. I listen to what the teachers have to say, but I make sure they know that I don't believe everything they tell me. Just like I don't believe everything my granddaughter tells me because they are both lying. So we can start from there. And if the people talking are disrespectful and rude to you. Just think of how they treat your child when you are not there. I am not one to use bad language. I can put them in their place without it. and I look dead into their eyes when I talk to them, man or woman.

If you are under the age of 14 , your parent is your biggest advocate. But when begin high school they have to take in your say in what happens to you during high school and after. When is your next evaluation? Be with your family for that meeting. Your IEP team includes you and your parents and you do have a say. You can show them a portfolio of your test scores/work/ projects/ report cards etc and show them evidence at school and at the meeting that you are capable. At least you can show them your side of the story and it can weigh in on the decision. You and your parents can ask to have your IEP re-evalued and look at your behavior and performance to see if you met your goals. BUt right now your parents and your teachers are the biggest allies on your IEP team.

But, if one wants to keep one’s job, and your employer and/or “others” in the Hierarchy above you inform you that the meeting, school, District, or Entity WILL Offer, or NOT Offer certain services, one learns to remain silent, or even agreeing, often signing the IEP, or one is not employed at that entity.
For example, kid met his “goals” in Speech for certain speech sounds, so kid is exited from Speech.
But, kid is not intelligible to unknown strangers, in unstructured environments.
Kid can be understood by those that are familiar to them, but cannot be understood on the phone.
The Entity might not want to pay for increasing LRE, but just discrete targets.
    Maybe you ask,
“Wow! 😊She has really mastered “r” and “s.”
“But, there’s no way she can be understood by strangers, yet. So, no way I can sign that IEP. Then, give two or three recent examples of some continued need for LRE, and ask,
“What’s the plan for helping with that behavior?”
“What about a new Speech goal, like
“increasing ability to be comprehended in novel, unstructured settings by peers?”
    Then, 😎😊
So, if you don’t know to ask for certain outcomes, the Entity isn’t usually going to suggest services, often because caseloads are already untenable, and you do not want to make waves.
The SPED Directors are not often in IEP’s, nor are their bosses. But, they’re there.
For some IEPS, those folks are always there, in person.

Can you refuse to have your student have an IEP.

That comment sounds like you are the person that called her from the school trying to tell her what to write and that she has no rights. If you can not be helpful go somewhere and sit your A$$ down.

Can I ask if you refused the IEP? Looking for the outcome if possible. Thank you

@@Peace_and_Love_777..... I had one and wish my pairents refused one for me. I got out of all my special Ed classes when I was 18. I have dyslexia and a lot of the kids in sped classes have a lot of behavioral issues I don’t have nor wanted to be around + there is a Sigma with being in those classes.

@@MrJimmy-fl2bn ..... I appreciate your valuable feedback. Thank you. You are not alone. I haven't found one person that has anything positive to say about it. I have decided to home school if I continue to get pushed around as a parent. Thank you and take care!

Parents shouldn’t have to be kissing their a$$es. We as parents are already going through hell and back dealing with our kids. Schools are supposed to be professional and understand that parents are emotionally dealing with a lot. And if you aren't being combative they won't do anything for your kid and I can testify to that.

The fact schools are trying to set normal capable children into this system due to the bumbling inept teaching during this COVID debacle is disgusting and irresponsible.

Exactly what I was saying. They don't even consider they were out of school and fell behind because of that.
