5 reasons why the HENRY LONG RANGER is the BEST LEVER GUN EVER! (.223/5.56 lever action rifle?)

  • Hey guys, if you like this video then you need to check out my review of the Henry Axe .410 here: • This is why you want a...
    With the Long Ranger, Henry sought out to fix every issue people have with lever rifles, and they did a stellar job! Here are my top 5 reasons the Long Ranger is the best lever gun ever made!
    1) made to shoot modern calibers (.223/5.56, .243win, .308win, and 6.5 creedmoor)
    2) magazine fed for faster reloads
    3) free floated barrel for better accuracy
    4) shorter throw on the lever for shooting prone
    5) geared 6 lug rotary bolt (very consistent lock up and engagement like a bolt action)
    The result is a modern take on an old west gun. This thing is extremely accurate, and super fun to shoot. Best of all, no more stocking up on those old outdated cowboy loads! Run the same ammo in this that you do in your modern sporting rifles!
    Thank you to Henry Repeating Arms for providing this firearm for testing and evaluation!
    Thank you to Bushnell for providing the Forge 2.5-15x40 Rifle scope! check it out here for more info:

    Great review, and on my list in .308. The only thing I’ll disagree with is that I always keep the iron sights. Fold down the back sight they look fine, and I don’t think they look cheap at all. When the scope inevitably fails it’s nice to be able to aim, plus sometimes it’s nice to go shooting using just your skill with iron sights without having the weight of the scope to deal with, especially a monster like that Bushnell.

      @@evocati6523 Then you don’t have any real world experience. Try carrying your rifle through a rocky canyon, or on horseback for a few days, or worse, in a rifle case at the mercy of uncaring baggage handlers, and tell me your scope will always maintain perfect zero. I suppose you haven’t on a trip to the range, but in a hunting camp or in a hard use situation out in the field scope failure is common, especially with variable power scopes, which is why I have more 4x and 6x fixed power scopes than anything else. In some tactical rifle classes I’ve seen as many as 5-10% of scopes fail to stand up. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said “inevitably fails,” but fragile scopes are the reason backup sights exist, and I have no rifles that don’t have two ways to sight them.

      @@ronaldmayle1823 Wrong! In my years of shooting and training in tactical classes I have seen a number of "modern" scopes fail. Yes, the older scopes can be more prone to failures, but never assume that a modern scope (no matter how well made) will never fail, because it is at that point that it might just fail you. It is a main reason why I have iron sights on all my firearms and recommend them to inexperienced shooters. If it's made by man it will fail at some point.

      Why? You’re not using it for personal defense, target practice would get expensive as hell, guns like this are only good for hunting, after that first shot the hunts over man. Then again I’m against rifle hunting anyways, so I’m biased. Where’s the sport in being 100yds away? Scent, movement, heck even sound is pretty much irrelevant at the distances these rifles can accurately perform, where’s the sport in that? And spare me the human element, optics today have range finders, wind detectors, everything you need to nail your target. I bow hunt, and not from a blind or tree stand, I prefer to stalk, giving the animal the advantage, not me. Sure, I go seasons getting skunked, but when I’m successful, there’s no better feeling man. I like to think that even if I could legally own something more modern than a .50 black powder I’d still feel this way. And I’m only talking about sport hunting, not the folks in the bush who have to hunt to survive, they can have all the advantages they can get, I can roll down to the market and buy what I need, tho the free meat is more tasty.

You should be able to shoot close to a mile with buckhorn rear and traditional front sight with the iron sights alone! People think iron sights are there for nothing but junk and that a rifle isn’t a rifle until you put the Coke bottle scope on top of it!! How is that plastic delicate scope going to fair in the rough country? Try throwing a Marlin levergun with a scope on top and that scope is a piece crap!! And if you are like many shooters today in this mamby pamby world you have no sights if your scopey breaks because you loathed the excellent real iron sights your rifle came with so now after your cheater toy top is broken you have no sights at all!! Because you have done a tear iron sight buckhornectomy on it!! Just an opinion!

Consider me a new sub of yours, I can't wait to browse through your previous catalogue ... I'm sure my simple mind will be entertained for hours.
    Like you, I have a life long love for both guns and guitars. First of all, I'm an old dude that bought my first guitar, a Silvertone acoustic, in 1964 and have owned everything from a Country Gentleman, to a Mustang, a Strat to a Les Paul, and that's just my electrics ... my first gun I purchased was a Marlin single .22 in 1963. Still have it and shoot it regularly. Had to give my guitars away to friends and family due to arthritis, but am thankful for all the great years of playing in bands of all types and loving music on the next level.
    Hold on to and develop your talents just as far as you can so that you can finish life with no regrets ... your loves are worth every ounce of energy you can afford.

    Magnum calibers are modern. 44Mag is from the 30s. Lever actions are not designed for longer ranges, and as such do not usually have the best accuracy or groupings. Browning also made a lever action with a shorter lever travel distance. If you're firing a lever action from prone, you're doing something wrong.

    I like the "cheap Walmart air gun" look of the iron sights. A lever action without the iron sights looks emasculated. And the front hooded sights are the way to go in sunlight. A shallow v rear for speed, a ghost ring or side flip peep sight for accuracy, or traditional rear for all around just forward of the receiver will do.

    Had a 4x9 variable and with 85gr Hornady spbt projectiles hand loaded into Norma brass I was able to shoot MOA @ 100mtrs. But it was only 4 shots in the mag and the mag release was not as easy, from memory ( it was over 40 years ago) I think it was a clip in front. I believe the design was by Browning it had the same rotary bolt head and gear operation but was a 3x3 =9 lug from memory it was a very slick fast and strong action taking the hottest loads in the Hornady reloading manual.

  • @robertbeckman2054
    @robertbeckman2054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    He compares the "slow" reload of a SIDE-LOADING design. Henry, of all companies, made most of their lever-action rifles with the "unscrew the tube cap, pull the rod out, load the rounds, put the rod back in, and screw the cap" style. So please have respect for Marlin, Rossi, and Winchester for their side-loaders, which are, I'd say better than the box cartridge because you can top your rounds off during a spare moment, but don't have to until your tube's empty. Lever actions were never meant to "reach out and touch someone". They're a brush gun by design. Light, nimble, and can pack a whollup. Putting a scope half the size of the rifle looks funny, too.

    Even if Henry Repeating Arms has no heritage with lever guns, and even if it has copied its designs from other manufacturers, it has successfully carved a niche for itself due to the failures of quality, costs, or ownership of other companies that produce lever guns, not mention that Henry is 100% American made, unlike Browning. Henry also has better quality control than Marlin, probably because Marlin has gone under a few ownership changes over the years. I'm glad you made this video because I have been thinking about purchasing this firearm. I want to wait for Henry to release it in the Model X series with MLOK and picatinny rails and synthetic stock. When you get down to it, the Henry Long Ranger IS a bolt action rifle. It’s a straight pull bolt action that is actuated by a lever instead of a bolt handle.
    If I didn’t already have a good hunting rifle this is probably what I’d buy. This rifle in 308 has a lot going for it as a deer and hog gun.

    • @NordPrecision
      @NordPrecision 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Lever action is a type of action for repeating firearms that uses a manually operated cocking handle located around the trigger guard area (often incorporating it) that pivots forward to move the bolt via internal linkages, which will feed/extract cartridges into/out of the chamber and cock the firing pin mechanism. This contrasts to other type of repeating actions such as the bolt-action, pump-action, semi-automatic or automatic/selective-fire actions. A firearm using this operating mechanism is colloquially referred to as a levergun."

    • @NordPrecision
      @NordPrecision 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just defined the reason it is a lever action, but still called it a bolt action😐

    • @jamesp8164
      @jamesp8164 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NordPrecision typical lever actions lock from the rear with lugs in the back of the action, and have non rotating bolts. They are usually fed by tube magazines.
      Typical bolt actions have lugs that lock at the head of the bolt into the front of the receiver, and have rotating bolts. They are typically fed by box magazines, often fixed, sometimes detachable.
      The long ranger has a rotating bolt, like a bolt action, and locking lugs at the head of the bolt which engage with the front of the receiver, like a bolt action. It is fed by a box magazine, like a bolt action. From an engineering standpoint it has more in common with a Remington 700 than it does an 1873 Winchester, and that is just facts.
      The only thing that distinguishes it’s operating mechanism from a typical bolt action is the use of a lever with a geared drive attached to rotate the bolt for unlocking in the absence of a traditional bolt handle. In every other way it operates in the same fashion as a bolt action rifle.
      If you created an animation of the long ranger and a Remington 700 operating side by side, and left out the bolt handle on the 700 and the lever on the Henry, you’d assume they’re the same type of rifle. Which they are.
      If you did the same animation with an 1873 Winchester and a Remington 700 you’d assume they’re different types of rifles. Which they are.
      A more accurate descriptor of the Henry would be “lever actuated bolt action rifle”. From a marketing standpoint, however, it’s sold as just another levergun because most people buying it do so because they prefer operating the rifle with a lever than with a bolt handle. That does have some practical advantages too; levers can be operated a little faster and they are left handed friendly. The marketing, however, does not change the engineering.
