    I have both the .75 and 1.7. When combined with the 14 Pro Max I have the incredible range of choices of 18 / 24 / 35 / 40 / 80 / (130)mm. These lenses do fit on the lightweight SmallRig cage if you add the 17mm lens adapter plate and then screw on a 17-37mm adapter. Works superbly and within weight specs for smaller gimbals. That said, I am seldom pulling out a gimbal nowadays as action mode is so stable. Great review, thanks!

    Hi Blake. Just a couple of questions. Since shooting video doesn’t utilize the whole sensor in the iPhone, how do photos look when taken with this lens attached? Also, the sensor sizes have increased in the later iPhones, but would you not say that the optics have changed in the lenses of these new phones and this also has an effect on edge softness?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t done much photography with that lens, maybe a shot here or there but they work fine in my experience.
      I think the newer generation phones have definitely upgraded their optics, but they’re extremely sharp. So adding a lens is actually a nice way to get a softer, more pleasing image.

    • @iphoneographers

      It could work. Depends how far away you are really. I believe this is equivalent to approximately a 130mm telephoto when used on the 3x iPhone Tele. Hello, Blake! Thanks for the information. One question though. I own an iPhone 11 Pro Max, do you think this will work well with this phone? And second, I own 67mm diffusion and ND Filters since I own some Moment Lenses. If I purchase a step up ring (62mm to 67mm) do you think I will get some kind of vignetting? Their official site says that they recommend 77mm at least. So if that would be a problem I'll just probably go with the Moment option. Thank you!

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use both 67 and 77mm. Now you might still get some occasional vignetting, especially if you’re running image stabilization because it sometimes “drifts“ and causes vignetting. But it’s minimal and usually only on wide lenses, not telephoto. I haven’t tried the lens on an earlier model phones, but it’s my understanding they’re backwards compatible, and really just designed to accommodate the larger sensors of the later phones.

      Their Beastgrip Pro is lighter and it’s also universal and it too has a 37mm lens mount… amzn.to/3DNdaua.
      Or there are other options out there. For example, you could get a 17mm mount cage like the SmallRig and then get an adapter to 37mm mount. Not as clean of a setup but it could work. Ultimately though you have to have a 37mm mount regardless of which brand or cage you’re getting.

    • @umbertoaguiar
      @umbertoaguiar ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tested it with the 13 Pro. The 1.7 Is a little better than Beastgrip's previous tele, the 2.0 . You will get more resolution with the 1.7 but the 2.0 goes farther, blurs the background more and has a better lens cap.
      The 2.0 is not available anymore so you can only buy the 1.7. If you are not in a hurry then wait until later in the year.
      Freewell will release its first tele lens for iPhones . Shiftcam will release a new. tele lens.
      Beastgrip lenses are much better than Moment and Sandmarc's . The current Shiftcam tele is as good or better than the Beastgrip 2.0. They will release a. new lens that is likely to be better than Beastgrip. Freewell's lens could also be better than Beastgrip seeing the quality of their Sherpa VND filter.
      The advantage of Freewell and Shiftcam over Beastgrip is that you can use them with Smallrig universal rig so you won't need to buy a cage every time you get a new iPhone seeing that Apple, an irresponsible manufacturer, changes the size of their phones every year. They change it just enough to force customers to buy new cases.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Besstgrip 2x Tele does not work with the iPhone 13 or 14 and their larger sensors and camera bumps. The edges are soft to the point of being out of focus. Great lens for any phone before those though.

    • @umbertoaguiar
      @umbertoaguiar ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iphoneographers I wanted to avoid arguments just to be "nice" and deleted previous comments .
      But you are misleading people with your reviews claiming that the 2x lens does not work with iPhone 13 Pro. It does. Actually, the 2.0 works not only with the 13 Pro but also with the 14 Pro if using iPhone's tele lens.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว

      No arguments here. Just the facts. That is not only from my personal testing but also straight from the guys at Beastgrip. That is the entire reason they created the 1.7x lens. The 2x does not work properly.
      Now *could* you use the 2x? Of course. You can use any lens you want, but unless you like soft out of focus edges and chromatic aberration they don’t recommend using it with the 13/14 Pro iPhones. And neither do I.

      I’ve not used it for photography, but my guess is that when shooting stills the iPhone uses more of the sensor as compared to video - so you’re getting some vignetting. I’ll try and test this myself. With Beastgrip I use it for video 99% of the time and for that it works flawlessly.

    Thanks for this review, Blake. I was a Moment fan for the longest time. Their lenses still work fine on my personal 11 Pro Max. But I was terribly disappointed to find they didn't function well when I upgraded my work phone to a 13 Pro Max. I shoot mostly run-and-gun stuff, so the telephoto capability is my lens focus (pun intended!). I've explored a variety of lens options, including Sandmarc and Reeflex. But I just wasn't convinced they were the right move for me. Replacing my current rig with a Beastgrip Pro in order to get and use the new 1.7x lens is a significant investment - one I made last night. With the trend toward larger sensors and larger smartphone camera lens diameters, moving to the 37mm diameter lens mount seems to be a bit of future proofing. But I guess I'll find out this fall, as I intend to retire my 11 Pro Max for the new 15 Pro Max (or whatever they are going to call it.)

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว

      It will definitely be interesting to see what they do with the 15. Rumors are it’ll be a new design, but how much can you really change a phone? USB-C or Thunderbolt will be great, but that should be no issue with the cages or lenses/sensors.

    Does this make the Beast the choice over the Smallrig? I'm debating between the two

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on how you want to use it. The Beastcage is much more robust and heavy duty, not something to easily run and gun with. The Smallrig is much lighter and more portable. Or you can consider the Beastgrip Pro too, which is lighter and universal. And it also has a 37mm mount.

    • @umbertoaguiar
      @umbertoaguiar ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get both. The Smallrig is much cheaper and you can save money if you buy Smallrig NATO handles for the Beastgrip cage instead of the Beastgrip handles.But you won't be able to use Beastgrip lenses with the Smallrig cage. You can use ND filters, though, which are more important for good shooting with iPhone than lenses.
      You can also use Moment and Sandmarc lenses with the Smallrig cage but those lenses are just not good enough. I tested tele lens from Sandmarc, Moment, Shiftcam and Beastgrip (the 2x).Both Shiftcam and Beastgrip were much better than Moment and Sandmarc. Shiftcam was a little better than Beastgrip but Shiftcam has a customer lock in policy and they don't match with anything.
