    I've heard about this a lot in the comments before personally experiencing this for myself, but I am glad to say that the issue is a temporary one and there are ways to fix it. Please enjoy this exploration of why the issue likely occurred and what you can do to fix it.
    Special thanks to Dalton Adkins for his great tutorial on re-installing your Surface Drivers:

    Thank you for the video. It is really nice to nerd out with a like minded TH-camr. I just upgraded from 13" SB1 base model to 15" SB2 with i7 and GPU. What a difference in performance and display clarity with my 42 year old eyes. Plus the larger model fits on top of my lap, instead of wedged between my thighs and knees. My leg skin and hair no longer gets pinched when I adjust the screen angle 👍

    I had this issue for a few days. I did solve it in the end with one of the firmware updates. I found interestingly enough if you try to find the firmware update page for the surface book 2 you can come across 2 different versions of the same page. One had 2 downloads the other had 3, both legit microsoft pages just with different content.... The update that fixed it for me was SurfaceBook2_Win10_16299_1802809_0.msi. This does include a firmware update on reboot so take proper precautions when installing(plug into power, have charge ect....) if you are going to try this way. Pretty crazy to think that microsoft don't use their own product as one of the test environments, or under tested before shipping updates....

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not too crazy to imagine in this case. If it was for Spectre then I think they'd get it out the door to all customers ASAP, then worry about the minority Surface Book users. Wouldn't make sense to delay an OS patch for all users to fix it for a small market share.

  • @buccob
    @buccob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This issue still happens to my original Surface Book... it has been improved though, used to be very frequent but now is ~1/20 times I need to use the dGPU... mostly happening after waking up from deep sleep or hibernation.
    Quick solution is to detach and re-attach the clipboard so not very time consuming, but a bit annoying nonetheless. Something I also noticed is that you can physically clean the protruding connectors with cotton and absolute alcohol and it does wonders... almost no recurrence for a long while. So in my opinion it is a mix of Software AND Hardware issues...
    I love my Surface Book... it has been awesome this past 2 years, and it has given me freedom of working locations for my engineering and design projects... I look forward to updating to a Surface Book 3, since I can't justify upgrading yet... but definitely the best device for my type of use.

    I didn't really care about the GTX1050 in my 13" when I bought, but recently I started using it to make a 3D design in SkethcUp, and I did notice that the 1050 was gone in TaskManager... But it came back on reattaching the dock... Good to know that it is a software issue, because I don't know better than that my SB2 has had this issue (but again, I probably started using the GPU after the "breaking update" :D )... But also, my device is running very hot when idling, or even when in sleep (sometimes the GPU fan comes on at full speed when I wake it), which also appears to drain the battery fairly fast (Intel GPU and CPU are not working overtime, and I have it on recommended and sometimes on better performance settings)... I think I'm going to wait for this dedicated GPU issue to fix itself by updates, since it's not really that big of a deal for me, but hopefully it also fixes my running hot issue...

      @emiliotkt00 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sparky Rih Hey im debating on buying the SB2 or the macbook pro for the college, i also do some 3d modelling and graphic design, so you think that Gpu issue is that bad?

    • @SparkyRih
      @SparkyRih 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, like this video describes, there is a work around which appears to fix it... And it will most likely be fixed by MS in the near future... For me it isn't that bad because I rarely use the GPU... But when I do, I just need to redock the tablet, worst case I've had is that I had to redock it 3 times before I could finally startup Sketchup and do some work... I do have to keep it awake though, because when it goes to sleep, it will most likely come back without the GPU, which makes SketchUp crash etc. etc.I wouldn't worry about this issue when making your decision, it does appear to be a temporary software issue...

    Wow you are the first TH-camr I came across who actually replied to every comment. I have a question too, if you may. :)
    Are there better devices for students who would only use it for note-taking, writing essays and browsing with at best 10 tabs open while doing researches for finals? I need portability, smooth running and durability for 2+ years. I can buy this on their own site for €1359 right now (excluding the pen). Is this my best option?

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn't sound like you need a dedicated graphics card if you're not gaming or doing heavy lifting. If the detachable tablet isn't a hug sell there are Dell XPS' and HP X360 that are pen and touch screen equipped. As a student, both companies have discounts I believe but the HP warranty is more straightforward. Lenovo has some great ThinkPad sales right now and the best warranty options in the industry. What else can you tell me about your use case?

    I spent several weeks with a Microsoft tech going back and forth about this. After exhaustive test I had the exact issue you're having and it is a hardware issue. They will send you a replacement unit after verifying without any issue. You will however have to give them a credit card number and they will hold the full retail amount of the replacement until you return the damaged unit.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about that it is a hardware issue as they tend to not go away. I wouldn't be surprised though if the rep you spoke to felt it was easier to swap the device out, especially given the amount of time you spent troubleshooting the issue. I've yet to have the issue resurface after the firmware and software updates that have been rolled out.

    With the official Microsoft drivers for the dgpu it wasn't disappearing.
    I've the latest firmware and latest version of Windows 10.
    I was complaining with a Microsoft tech agent about the latest Nvidia driver were updated in april 2018. Pretty old.

    Hello
    I'm planning to own this device, and the only way I got to order it is via amazon, so I'm a little worried about the warranty & support things, especially that I live away from the US.
    the thing is that I'm really concerned about the GPU issue among other minor issues, so is there any updates 'bout this specific problem?
    And I also need to ask about your experience with reading Ebooks, is the 15inch tablet mode is OK with "reading"?

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm using the 13 inch here. dGPU issue is gone but if you can't get any warranty support then it's hard for me to recommend it since if you run into any trouble the costs for out of warranty repair is a concern.

  • @Alboravin

    I've not had this particular issue happen to me, at least not the GPU totally disappearing, but I will say that I've had issues with games not recognising the GPU and not having it kick in as the default graphics card. Overwatch was doing this initially and Far Cry 5 was infuriating when it wouldn't keep the 1060 as the default GPU in its settings menu, despite restarting the game to apply the settings.
    However, after a while, perhaps through restarts and the occasional update, I have had no GPU issues recently.
    I think Microsoft are slowly but surely getting there with updates and patches to smooth out the kinks in the SB2 experience.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there is a lot going on between those two models.
      First off, you cannot get more than 8GB of RAM with the i5 Processor which is several generations old now. Conversely, you can only get the i7 with 16GB of RAM. That is without going into the hard drive sizes.
      Not only that, but the i5 has integrated graphics only, whereas the i7 comes with the GTX 1050.
      One costs CAD $1,729.00, the other costs CAD $2,899.00. So what's more important to you; power or price? I'm also curious what you plan to do with it since your use case will also dictate which one will provide better value for your use.

      Pairing an i7 with only 8GB of Ram seems like an odd choice to me. Also, the difference between the i5 and i7 is a dGPU as well. If your computer science program will benefit from you having a dedicated graphics card then that is a big part of the discussion. Will you be using the touch display or the detachable screen? If not, there are other investments to look at as well. I might suggest you give this video of mine a watch: th-cam.com/video/w75BSMAIF9c/w-d-xo.html

    So my question is: if I was to buy the cheapest base model of the SB2 13.5" which has 126gb storage and core i5 8gb ram would I be better spending the money on a different design, or would the laptop work fine for those needs and be worth the smaller storage ram and only i5?

    • @LaptopRetrospective

      To me, you lose a lot with a base model. But you would be the best judge. I couldn't work with such a small hard drive for example. You might want to explore other options. Also don't forget warranty costs.

      The serial number is hopefully on the bill of sale you have. You can find all the identifying information by detaching the screen and looking at the base where the tablet meets the base. There is all of the information, including your serial number. Again, you have to detach to read the information. I do not know the customs laws for your country, but opening the goods sounds like it would have been a way to try to get it in duty free, which is a bit sketchy for the both of you. But that would be your first step to see if the serial numbers match, then you can check the order number to see if they bought it at a store because then it would still have it's 1 year warranty activated via Microsoft.

    Have a question regarding your Surface Book 2. I bought one recently and have run into an issue when connecting it to a Surface dock and two ASUS monitors. Specifically, internet connection drops if I close the screen on the SB2. Tech support concluded that I have to leave the SB2 screen up. This does solve the internet connectivity, but I would prefer to work with the SB2 screen closed. Do you know if this is accurate with the SB2? My old HP for example had no problem with the screen closed while connected to two monitors.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting scenario! I haven't tried something like this yet but I suspect it has to do with the magnets in the base and display triggering a sleep mode in the firmware so it is not unexpected. My only suggestion would be to detach the tablet and flip it around before closing it. The screen will still be on but at least it would take up less space. Might also add something to your workflow to have a giant touch surface.

    • @andrewsherman9869
      @andrewsherman9869 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tech support seemed to suggest something about sleep mode, but it wasn't clear due to some communication issues. • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One possibility I've found with someone stated a similar problem was the need to update the Firmware of the dock itself. Here is the support article with links to the tools needed:
      support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023478/surface-update-your-surface-dock
      Also, if you open Control Panel from the Start Menu (Gear Icon) and type "lid" you will get some helpful settings as well that might solve the issue. Just keep in mind that this would be regardless of the dock being attached or not. (Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\System Settings)
      Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

    I'm stuck between the surface pro and surface book for university, I'm looking at an i5, 8gb ram and Idc about the storage, which would you recommend? I'm leaning towards the surface book for the bigger screen, and better keyboard while still being a detachable 2 in 1

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Screen is indeed bigger, but it will really come down to personal preference on the keyboard situation. Remember the Surface Pro is not going to be fun on a lap with the type cover. Cost wise is interesting. On the "Surface" the Pro would seem cheaper, but as soon as you add the type cover, pen and etc, it is about the same price. For example, the cost of the unit spec'd as you'd like is CAD $1,649.00 (Education pricing available btw, this is just to compare without any discounts), once you add their Surface Pro bundle (keyboard, pen, Office, case and Microsoft Complete) it is CAD $2,027.19. The SurfaceBook 2 as spec'd is CAD $1,979.00, but does not include the pen, case, Office or Microsoft Complete. If we factor those in, then it's $2,446.99 ($2,467.98 bundle price includes a case).
      So regardless it is a difference of $400 CDN. If you can, handle both devices in person before making the decision.

    Personally they should have made the screen part a little bit thicker and put all the stuff in the screen. And add a thunderbolt connection for external GPU

      I hear what you're saying, to help the tablet be a bit more independent, but then it starts to meet a different use case and becomes even more expensive.

      @@LaptopRetrospective first thing I did when I got my 15inch was download the latest drivers from NVIDIA and I pretty much keep on top of them. I wondered if this issue could be resolved or worked around with a different gpu driver

      Seems like it has more to do with Windows 10 and the Surface firmware. Your mileage may vary.

      I just uninstalled nVidia driver and reinstalled it, worked fine for me till now.. no auto disappearing till now... the problem still is the very slow TaskView .. I can't find any fix to this!

      Have you tried the firmware updates? There was one pushed yesterday through Windows Update. Also, you can try the slow ring build. Let me know if those help.

    I've been looking into SB2 a long time now. Would you say it's worth buying as of right now?

      What do you want it to do? What is your planned use case?

      Do you see yourself using all the unique features of the SB2 like pen input and detaching screen?

    • @cerenox
      @cerenox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is what I had in mind

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're going to use everything the SB2 has to offer then you'd be hard pressed to find another machine that can do all it can do. If there are features you won't use, then there are other options.

    this happened to me the other day while gaming. blue screen with a message about 1050 not being found or something. restart fixed it...

      @LaptopRetrospective  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. Never had the error message but I presume that would happen if it was actively using it and it went missing. Kinda like ripping the card out of a desktop. Would be interested to know if the fixes detailed here would stop it from happening full stop.
