In this tutorial I'll be going over the basics of UTAU. I'll discuss both some of the words that are commonly used among UTAU users, as well as the interface of the software. If you wish to know more about specific topics regarding UTAU, please check out my other tutorials :D
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments ^^
Also, for those interested, I take MIDI and UST commissions :D

I made Defoko say "takoyaki" and I feel like a parent who just heard their child's first word- So awe-inspiring.
ME TOO! i made defoko say that (just to test it) and it felt like that too-
That. Is. ADORABLE
Also a bonus: instead of having the utau application on my homescreen, i had the file that i saved that made defoko say “ta-ko-ya-ki” in the app. I feel so dumb now T_T
today i made her say tanoshi ♥️
i made her say her own name and i felt so proud
ATTENTION: If you type in Japanese and your Utauloid is still silent, uninstall and reinstall the program. I had to do this, so I just wanted to help. I probably made an error during installation.
What if another Utau makes sounds and it's just that one utua? Defoko works for but Teto's Japanese doesn't
when i type in japanese it puts question marks
Hey, I have the same problem and I rlly dont know how to fix it :/
You have to set local to japanese. Then it should work.
@@jaslynn3374 how do you do that? my computer is on japanese but the program has weird symbols instead of words

i literally almost cried, i've wanted to make an utau my entire life. thank you so much for making these great tutorials.
this is probably a silly question, but how did you open the program? i extracted the zip file and got the .exe installer, but after i click through everything nothing else really happens
@@morelikecarter I'm really late but same, did you solve it?
@@flan.insana i was able to open it somehow, but it was a while ago. try clicking different things?
@@morelikecarter nevermind I figured it out, I just searched it on the windows searching bar
@@flan.insana im gonna leave this here if anyone has the same issue; after unzipping the .exe, what you launch is the installer. the installer will ask you where to download the program (default being somewhere in program files but i heard thats kinda buggy) and after you close the installer, you have to go find the actual program where you chose. the installer should also have made a shortcut on your desktop with the file name " UTAU - 歌声合成ツール "

For those having a problem with no sound, make sure you change the region to japan before installing. I changed it after I installed it, had no sound, and when I uninstalled and reinstalled the program it worked perfectly.
Also, when installing, I chose the option that was already checked (the one with the (m) at the end, instead of (e)). Don't know what the difference is since I can't speak Japanese, but there you go.
It won't always work. Some people download english utauloids like teto.
(M) is for only the user the computer's logged in on. (E) is for all users.
how do you change the region?
@@olivialanc9035 On Windows 10, go to the Configuration Panel, then Clock and Region (or however the option is called with a globe and a clock icon), then the option inside that with a globe and clock as icon. Then, go to the administrative panel, click the second option. Then, change the region in the dropdown box to Japanese (Japan).

For those of you curious about what the MIDI buttons do:
MIDI is when you convert notes played on an electric instrument to notes in a computer program. For example, if I plugged my keyboard into my computer and then pushed one of the buttons (I haven’t tried it yet so idk which ones work, I’ll update this comment when I figure it out) then the notes that I play on my keyboard should pop up on my screen in the order and for as long as they are played. So if I play a C#4 for 2 beats on my keyboard, the UTAU will sing a C#4 for 2 beats.
Again, I’ll update this comment once I try it for myself. Sorry if my explanation makes no sense lol
Gura pfp
i dont wanna be that person but i think you mean electronic, i could completely see a newbie reading this comment and being like "ok ima use my guitar then" cuz leme tell ya people do this, trust me, as a software designer, i had some users who managed to "boil an egg on cold water" as we say here in brazil, literally the impossible LMAO
@@sockettgirl Yeah, I mentioned electric instrument ^^
It doesnt follow how long it plays, only the notes. I didnt change the settings for the time signature so im not sure if it follows that or just a fixed length

I have my Japanese keyboard activated and I clicked the A, but when I download voicebanks they still show up in gibberish
You have to change your local before installing UTAU in order for the gibberish to show up as Japanese. the Japanese keyboard is only there as a help tool in case you wanna insert Japanese syllables into your UST.

They don't connect if you aren't in mode 2 so make sure you've clicked mode 2
oh my gosh, a tutorial, I'm planning to binge watch this and learn a lot about Utau, i used to be very fond of utau and vocaloids and I'm considering using them in my projects. thanks for these videos. 😁
You can get romaji converters or romaji encoded voicebanks so it'll sing with English characters. And the midi function allows you to import a midi file, but I guess that's pretty obvious.
It doesnt import a midi file it connects to a midi keyboard so you can put in notes easier. I think you can insert midi files in one of the tabs in the top left. Although pls correct me if im wrong lel
Everytime I draw notes the pitch bends won’t appear even when I turn the squiggly line on
when I use the pencil I dont see that connection indicator. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi! I'm having a problem with my UTAU, so- if I insert or type a note or lyric- It will come up as question marks. Also, even if I type in something- no sound? How to solve?????????
Hey um, this is kind of embarrassing, but I changed my locale and keyboard, used romaji to hiragana plugin, made sure my bv was all set up, selected everything, tried both regular notes and a premade ust, tried everything - my vb's still silent .-. I'm not sure what to do. I use Ruko male whisper but I've also tried it with Galvan Ize and Defoko, and nothing works.
Can someone help?
Kuroha What A Guy Amirite i have tge same exact problem:p
why is your icon a "demiboy" pride flag :/
You might wanna try a romaji bank then. Romaji banks are easier than hiragana or katakana banks. And you can easily find the right syllable you need.

I'm having that issue too, it shows question marks and stuff? I read somewhere that it could be because your computer can't process the fonts, and hat you need to download some for the Japanese to show up, but I haven't figured out how to download the font, but hopefully it will work! Yuunarii your amazing. just jesus christ.
Awww thank you ;v;
No problem!
Thanks for the tutorial.
I have some questions though.
1)When I write syllables like "th", "sh", "ch" (and so on), my UTAU can't pronounce them, instead it just stays silent (I'm using Teto's English voicebank, so i think it's not because the programm can't read roman alphabet.) I understand that these syllables are complicated and they should be replaced with something, but can we get the program to pronounce them?
2)when I want programm to say "r", It automatically translates this "r" as "rest", and does not pronounce the desired sound. How to fix it?
I would be very grateful if someone would answer me. (Just in case sorry for my poor English.)
Please tell me that us it safe for kids to use? And is this method still applicable, even after 4 years??? Please reply!!
It's *SUPER COMPLICATED!* I can't even get past the first tutorial! When I followed all of Yuu's steps in the first tutorial (installing UTAU), it keeps showing gibberish that I can't even understand!
Change the system locale to japan before downloading UTAU
FYI the MIDI controls are like if you have an electric keyboard plugged in, you can just play the notes instead of clicking on the interface. I'm pretty sure that's what it does, it's not that important though.
Oh my gosh thank you! I was really concerned as to why she wasn't making any noise at all. I'm going to try plugins soon
I'm trying to copy hiragana from a converter but the only thing I get in Utau is a questionmark

It might be because your computer doesn’t recognize the characters. Try installing Japanese in your languages setting, that should fix the problem.

I'm having an issue. You said the notes are automatically linking when you place them, but I do not see the red lines indicating they're connected. When I play them, I have to right click and select all or it will only play a single note. How do I fix this? It's really annoying.
I made defoko say 'stupid' and i feel so proud of myself
hi Yuunari, I have a problem when I download the utau. When create the new notes, it would be seen like lines are connected each others and can be fully played. But my utau cannot do that. I make some notes but seen like blocks and not connected. So when I played, just only one note that can be played. Is there something wrong with the program and what supposed to do to fix this problem? Thank you.
edit: now seen like lines and can be play all, but still not connected each other. I wonder why..
I've loaded a UST (which already has Hiragana for its lyrics) but Defoko won't play. As well as this, while UTAU has been able to let me put in Japanese characters in (I've had the keyboard for a while) it still doesn't play, yet all other sounds on my computer work.
Is there an explanation?
Is the UST you loaded in CV hiragana? If not, then that might explain it. If you're not familiar with CV, VCV or CVVC, I recommend you watch my 3rd tutorial.
I have. It appears it be in VCV, now that I've checked. I suppose I'll fix that, oops
IF UR NOTES ARENT CONNECTED THIS IS MY SOLUTION
u see the mode2 at the top? when i got it, the word trace and render wasnt there. so, press on mode2. it will appear. and ur notes will be connected!!
I know this video is 3 years old, but I have a question. Would you be able to make defoko sing with google translate copy and paste? Just using google translate and getting the hiragana letters, would that make it sing?
Well yeah but translate isn't reliable. it's horrible at actually translating.
True but the only answer I need is will it make her sing? I’m not relying on how good the translation is, I’m wondering if that could make her sing.
So when I put those lyrics there I couldn't make them from romaji to hiragana :( When I went to the place in 6:30, there wasn't those options available, do I have to download them or something?

You may need to plug-in the Romanji to Hirigana so the UTAU can read and vocalize :)

Is there a way to change the height of a note after drawing it?
Yup! Go into Properties when you click on that note :)
I'm trying to turn the Romaji into Hiragana using the plug-in but the characters remain the same.
The hiragana in the program is just looking like gibberish and the default あ is just a questionmark even though I followed the instructions of the first tutorial and changed keyboard and location. I\ve tried to restart and even reinstall the program but nothing seems to work..
