    Agreed that 3 top 50 prospects is too much for Skubal... but, getting Skubal is the only trade proposal that makes a huge difference in increasing the Sox chances of being a likely WS contender. Skubal does have 55 starts, going back to 2022, where his FIPs is well under 3.00.. so he's not exactly unproven. Realistically, 2 of the big 3 prospects PLUS someone like Yorke might get it done. There are going to be just 6-8 sellers at the trade deadline and 20 buyers, so the price will be well over what is normally considered "fair." Which is why, I don't expect or even want any big trade before the deadline. Get a so-so innings eater, hope for the best, and then deal in the off-season.

  • @PieterVanderWerf-p6v

    Totally agree. And my greatest fear is also a ridiculous overpay. Trade deadline is overpay time anyway. Add to that that it's looking like there could be 20 buyers and 10 sellers, and the prices might be absurd. I think your best bet is a couple of rentals, pitcher who you can coach up to give many OK innings and RH fielder with big splits.

      The Sox would never have won the division in 1990 without Anderson.
      And the Red Sox were so bad when Bagwell was good that even he couldn’t have catapulted them into the playoffs.
      And….
      If the Red Sox were carrying Bagwell’s salary in the late 90’s they would never have been able to nail down Pedro - or Manny, for that matter.
      I hate listening to people bellyache about the Bagwell trade.

    • @mctaguer
      @mctaguer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@deepdrag8131 The first part is PROBABLY true. I remember. Anderson was an experienced, competent setup man. He had a couple of key appearances down the stretch (I remember him striking out Jesse Barfield in a game vs. the Yankees in September). And yes, Bagwell was only in AA at the time. But none of that has anything to do with why the trade is so decried and ridiculed. And it has been piled on since that Lou Gorman didn't even know who Bagwell was AND was comfortable letting him go because he thought Scott Cooper was the 3B of the future (oops). If the Sox had done better than easy sweep fodder for the A's in the ALCS (even back then, just making the ALCS wasn't good enough--we'd done that 2X in the previous 4 yrs already), people would be more forgiving.

In this 30 game span he has 17 walks,12 doubles,6 homers 21 rbis, a ,517 on base percentage and 17 steals!! All out of the leadoff spot..He's been about an impossible out lately as well....I'm guessing he's due for a callup to Salem soon....He's in my top 10 without a doubt...Keep your eye on him...Anything you can dig up from your sources on him would be great!

      @@redseatradioI would be surprised if even one of the big three were traded. But even then, who’s available that would cost that much prospect capital? I doubt Seattle is making Kirby available and Crochet doesn’t quite have the track record to warrant a trade like this in terms of 2024 impact. I get it might be worth it for next year and beyond. But otherwise, the next tier down of prospects seems much more realistic to acquire any potential areas of need based on who may realistically be available

    Now more than ever, I would be careful on giving too much for a pitcher in his mid to late 20s who throws 98+. It's like motorcycle riding. If you haven't yet gone down, it just means you are going down. Elbow injuries so common now with the high velo. Tommy John is right down the road. But you can always hope you get a Pedro Martinez and get 7 great years. His stature and velo scared a lot of teams away.

    i mean to me, the argument ends once you look at the compensation the red sox gave up for 27 y/o chris sale who was off five straight top 5 cy young finishes. we gave up our #1, #5 and #7 prospects at the time according to soxprospects. now, moncada was the #1 prospect in the country, but still. on the other hand skubal is in his first all star season, it's laughable honestly but it's driven by people likely pushing garbage just to get clicks and unfortunately it's worked.

    And yet, somehow, the dodgers, with like the 54th ranked prospect and the 80th ranked prospects are considered heavy favorites to get him because their farm is “so deep” I have no idea where these perceived trade values come from but I feel like any time the dodgers make a trade they pay 60 cents on the dollar and whenever the Red Sox get mocked a trade we’re paying 250 cents on the dollar. What exactly is going on here? Are we as fans overvaluing our prospects or is baseball as a whole overvaluing the dodgers prospects? Make it make sense

    • @MarkB.-xq3pz
      @MarkB.-xq3pz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the Red Sox have overvalued a lot of their prospects for years, but other teams do too. Sometimes, one will get injured especially when it's a pitcher and never be the same when they return. There are very few "can't miss" prospects nowadays. How many 4A players have we seen, who tear it up in AA & AAA ball and can never seem to make that jump to the majors (see Bobby Dalbec). That's why teaching them right in the minors is imperative because once they make the big leagues, they have to show they can play with the big boys. I think you'll see Teel up next year and Mayer too, although with Story & Grissom and possibly Rafaela, there seems to be no place for Mayer yet and he may be blocked unless they can somehow move Story. I think Roman being so young will get another year in the minors, probably in AAA unless someone is traded and guys like Bleis and the kid they just drafted this year, may end up being trade bait at some point in the future, unless they want to be a revolving door of new guys replacing the current ones like a Tampa or Oakland. They need young team controllable proven starting pitching, preferably a lefty or two and those won't come cheap, as everyone is looking for the same thing, so some of these young guys will probably have to be sacrificed. Then they have all these good but not great prospects like Blaze and Cespedes and Yorke. Where do they fit in?

    • @MarkB.-xq3pz
      @MarkB.-xq3pz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point. I hated trading Mookie, but if he didn't want to be here or you weren't willing to pay him what he eventually got, I wasn't totally opposed to it. I do think they could and should have held out for a better package of players though. The minor leaguers are all gone. Vertugo was decent but he's gone too and Wong is the only one left for a top five player in baseball and thank God he's having such a good year or that trade would have been even more lopsided. Now they have to hope at least one of the pitching is prospects they got for Vertugo comes up big in the next few years (Fitts??) Rating prospects is such an inexact science.

    • @remaracs6283
      @remaracs6283 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MarkB.-xq3pz I don’t want to rehash the mookie deal it’s been overdone a million times. They needed to get Will Smith and verdugo and one of their starting pitching prospects back in that deal. Dumping price’s deal because it was an “albatross” is a joke you’re a big market team. He was your number 3 starter and you traded mookie because you didn’t have enough pitching, got rid of your number 3 and took no pitching back and didn’t sign any long term FA pitchers the entire time you were GM is completely fireable.
      I think there is a such a pressure on prospects these days to succeed the entire time they’re in the majors to raise their prospect stock. Almost every GM has said for decades that they want to see a prospect struggle for a sustained period of time and work their way out of it. It humbles the guy and makes them adjust. Baseball is a game of constant adjustments. There isn’t enough emphasis or forgiveness for a player who has struggled and got themselves out of it. Mayer and Anthony have dealt with it. Bleis is facing is now. See if he can adjust. Teel hasn’t but he’s a gym rat. We’ll see if he ever needs to.
      I think the pitching situation is less direct than people seem to think. Bello will be better, Kutter and Houck are known commodities, Giolito will be back next year, you need to replace Pivetta. Grabbing Fried or burnes or even jack Flaherty there would be less of an urgency to dump the farm. Would it be great to get skubal or crochet? Sure. But the competitive advantage you have right now is your hitting in the majors and hitting prospects coming up. Your pitching infrastructure is getting a lot out of guys you weren’t expecting. If they can grab a cooper Criswell type next offseason and make him a 15-20 game spot starter that’s a win.
      Don’t trust story to be healthy at this point. If he is great but work off of the assumption that Mayer will be the SS. I’d love story has a super utility. Would allow you platoon like crazy with no defensive drop off. That’s kind of exactly what they need at the deadline this year

      That's fine but again put it in the context of the Chris sale deal, who had much more going for him at the time, in that case it is giving up Moncada, Devers, and Benitendi. Do you think the Sox still win a world series without Devers or Benintendi?

    • @atgn70
      @atgn70 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you do a deeper dive,it's not as ridiculous as you'd think for someone like Skubal..As far as scouting is concerned,Tristons plate coverage as far as both inner and outer and slightly above the middle downward is excellent and he destroys mistakes in these zones,,no doubt..And Triston will take the outside middle black and hit it 450 feet to center or even right center surprisingly..Lots of footage out there to support..He has this skillset...But there's another side though..I still can't find a video of Casas getting a hit, let alone him making contact when a ball is touching the upper black esp pitches with late upward movement..he's literally under everything..And it's shocking how often Triston is literally under a center cut fastball bullseyeing the middle of the plate..Completely under the ball..He refuses to adjust..That hole is very real..Leaves lots of guys on..The rbi numbers show it,esp for someone who hits cleanup...And even Mayer is missing a lot of pitches lately,he's not walking, and his power is down from where it should be...He's still young and needs work..Maybe we are underrating Skubal?...I get it,,we like the guys we like...I'm guilty as well...We as Sox fans get excited about our guys,,I do too...We have to be more discerning when there are real issues I feel...Casas will both help you and kill you. I'd do the deal and never look back.

    Red sox need a more solid veteran 1bman. A SP, and a reliever.
    Casas is a trap at this point.
    Not coming back until August? And there's no way he provides a solid bat in the lineup. The trap is, Cora will put him out there everyday for 3 weeks and won't sit him when he goes 3 for 30.

    Skubal is the only player that I might be ok send Duran away for. His value is huge and this would let us keep the big 3 entirely. I don’t think we have the depth to keep all 3 without sending Duran over. It would make me sad and I’m not for it, but that’s the player we’d have to send.

    • @dbdmack

      I'd do it. Left handed controllable Cy Young favorite right now. Duran is hard to give up, but sox are loaded with OF's in the minors. They are not loaded with pitching. Skubal's two sesons prior are only a concern because of innings. He is at the same age as when we got Chris Sale.
