As an Angels fan I can’t wait to see those prospects we traded last year turn into HoF players in the next few years because that’s exactly what I expect from anything we do.
The Giants also once traded their top prospect (Zach Wheeler who was a TOP-10 MLB prospect at the time) for a couple months of an injured Carlos Beltran. As a Giants fan, that one really stings. Imagine a rotation of Wheeler, Cain, Bumgarner, and Lincecum? Its also a reminder that they used to draft great players.
We wasted future Cy young candidate who would have thrived in a pitchers ballpark like SF, for a 2011 team that we knew wasn't doing anything that year. I mean our shortstops that year were Emmanuel Burriss, Jeff Keppinger, and Orlando Cabrera.
I'm not saying it wasn't a bad trade, but Wheeler wasn't a top-10 prospect in 2011, he was more like top-50 at the time. Wheeler became a top 10 prospect in 2013 a few years after the original trade, and obviously, we know how the rest turns out.
@@grant5122 he was drafted #6 overall in 2009 and was the Giant's top pitching prospect. You are right though, he was around #50 before the 2011 season & #20 before 2012. Of course the top 10 then was guys like Trout, Harper, and Machado. And of course you never really know with prospects, especially pitchers. You missed the following disastrous Montreal Expos rental deal. In 1989, Montreal traded for Mark Langston of the Mariners. In return, Montreal sent to the Mariners three pitchers: Brian Holman, Gene Harris, and another pitcher, Randy Johnson. Montreal offered Langston a 3-year, $9 mill contract, but he refused to sign with the Expos, and went to the California Angels.
That’s not a disaster. Who in 1989 would have predicted that Randy Johnson, a 25 year old lefty who couldn’t find the strike zone, would become the best southpaw since Warren Spahn?
Mark Langston: 4.9 bWAR with Montreal. Brian Holman: 8.0 bWAR with Seattle. That's a bad trade before you factor in RANDY JOHNSON. (And I don't count Rondell White as being relevant to this trade, as compensatory draft picks are the ultimate crapshoot.)
@@nwebster84 It was a especially bad given that that team wasn't really going anywhere even with Langston. The Expos had some World Series contenders in the early 80s and then again in the mid 90s but that year's team was pretty mediocre. At least the Red Sox made the playoffs when they gave up Bagwell. Shades of what the Expos would do 15 years later with Colon. too cheap to pay free agents so they overpaid for rentals and messed up their future.
As an A's fan, the 2014 trade that sent Céspedes to the Red Sox for Lester and Gomes goes down as the worst trade/rental in their history. At the time they were 2.5 games above the Angels in the AL West, but collapsed after the trade and couldn't hit. Céspedes was the heart of the clubhouse and served as a good protection behind Donaldson and Moss. Lester was a rental and didn't even seem like he wanted to be there. In the Wild Card game, Lester was terrible and his inability to hold runners at first was exposed against the small ball Royals.
The Pirates had another interesting rental trade that hasn't fully blossomed yet: In 2017 the Pirates traded all star rental closer Tony Watson to the Dodgers for two single A players: pitcher Angel German, who didn't pan out, and an 18 year old lottery ticket infielder named Oneil Cruz. Obviously Cruz has a ways to go to hit his ceiling, but this one was interesting because it looked bad before Cruz even hit the majors

As someone who grew up going to New Britain minor league games, I have a nitpick: the images at 14:44 are of the wrong stadium. The New Britain Red Sox, which they were in 1990, played at Beehive Field. After the 1994 season, the Red Sox dropped their affiliation, the Twins picked it up, and the team became the Rock Cats; a year later, they moved next door (like, they share a parking lot) into New Britain Stadium, which is the field in the images at 14:44. (Those 16-foot outfield walls are unmistakable.)
I am glad you mentioned the Boddicker for Anderson and Schilling trade. I know it doesn't count as a rental trade because he still pitched for another two years for Boston but still. Too bad Schilling was moved before he could establish himself with the O's.
Yes, hopefully PCA learns to hit MLB pitching this year. I’m sure Counsell giving him adequate playing time vs Ross letting him waste away on the bench will help. Otherwise aside from the 2016 playoff run and 3/4 of the 2018 season where he was MVP front runner Baez was a few highlight reel plays sprinkled in with plenty of GIDP and whiffs on sliders 2ft off the plate.
You should talk about Kyle Wright’s unexpected 21-5 season in 2022 at least I thought it was unexpected and it also his first full season as a big leaguer.
Bagwell for Anderson was not meant to be a one-month rental. Anderson had signed a multi-year deal with the Astros before the season, but it was voided AFTER the trade, when the MLBPA won a collusion suit vs the owners. Not that it made the swap that much worse, but it made it less than a pure rental.
Nelson Cruz was both impressive and disappointing. He obviously provided no defensive upside as a DH, and he didn't provide the offense they wanted. On the flip side, the mentorship he provided to guys like Yandy, Randy, and Wander (before Wander did Wander things) is something that helped make them better hitters. So, if anything, they got that. But despite that, I think losing Ryan was not ideal for a team whose rotation is *always* injured.
I always think of Bagwell as being a home grown Astro. I know he’s not, I know he’s not from the state, but he spent so long there that it feels like he was just born in Houston.
