  • So you know we can't do a solid axle swap without using some good ole Jeep parts. In the garage today we get visited by Ian Johnson from @BigTireGarage and we acquire some jeep parts from S&B Motors where we had @MattsOffRoadRecovery help us get my old Willys Jeep out from the weeds. #smokeshowS10

    Leave the wheelbase at the current length. It’ll help with the rear driveshaft angle In case you want to lift the truck higher in the future.

    I like the idea of longer wheelbase. I think you get better crawling with longer reach. I would leave the rear axle right where it is. I know that wheels and tires are gonna' be a huge expense, but if you want bead retention without the expense of bead lock rims you can go old school. We used to get decent results with panhead metal screws and glue. If you have an old set of wagon spoke steel wheels it is easy.

    • @Tanner731
      @Tanner731 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no need to put holes in your wheels, the snow wheeler guys build up the inner beads with some wraps of gorilla tape and run low single digit psi without debeading. you can also scuff up the surfaces really good and use tire bead sealant to glue the beads to the wheel

    I will refer you to what you had said. "Keep it stupid simple" or was it the other way around? If you don't have to move the rear axle leave it alone and work on something else. I'm currently enjoying watching your back catalogue of videos. Loving how you present what you are doing even without the fancy garage/workshop. Keep up the good work. 👍

  • @abnpthfdr2934

    What you're doing with the S-10 is already amazing. My personal suggestion would be to leave the rear axle as is, keep the 126" wheelbase and spend that time (and money) elsewhere. I think Gladiators are 126" wheelbase and still, their main problem is not their wheelbase length; it's their departure angle. I would modify the rear (bed, frame, etc.), so as not to have a problem with the departure angle on the S-10.

  • @CraigClarkson
    @CraigClarkson ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Leave it 126. There WILL be a time crunch with something else down the line with the build. Keep moving forward with good pace to be better able to tackle that unforeseen issue with alacrity. 😊

    Should have put the shackles in the rear of the leafs. Every CJ or YJ I have had that was one of the first mods made. Just my opinion but I have read several articles saying that it works much better this way. Just think about how going forward into an obstacle it will flex out much better with the shackle in the rear...🤓

      I’m guessing he’s not doing a shackle reverse to keep the tire out of the body on full stuff. When you shackle reverse, the tire moves back during compression and he doesn’t have the room behind the tire.

    • @Tanner731

      Rear shackles on front springs are supposed to be better on bumps at speed. During slow speed stuff like rock crawling, the shackle in front pushes the axle into the rock or ledge more. Both are good, but for different reasons.

    Long wheel base for the win. You should disguise the truck. Take off anything / everything that indicates it's a Chevy. Then put a seven slot grill on the front with a big Ford emblem in the center. Cut out the raised Chevy emblem from the tail gate and replace it with one from a Toyota, put a Nisson emblem across the top of the windshield and change the side emblems with Ram and Hummer emblems.

Im off on ranger builds now, should be a fun truck, Id keep the wheelbase you have. in my experience for my terrain the longer wheelbase helps espesially when you can drag the frame with everything tucked up under the frame rails.

    I really like the factory color of that S10 too bad you don't have time to give it a good clean buff and bring the paint back

    Move that rear axle forward. I feel like you’ll see more benefits to that wb at 122” than any benefits left at 126”.

    Wheelbase is always a tradeoff, I would leave the rear axle where it is.

    Wheelbase will be just fine sitting on 40s it will definitely be short enough. Plus no driveshaft work to deal with. I would cut 12" off the rear frame and shorten the front of the box to tuck in the rear. Get shorter rear leafs instead of the factory long leafs . Shorten the truck itself get that departure angle

    Is like to see some creative work for the cage and a slight exo cage style in the truck bed.

    Longer wheelbase would never be an issue except extreme breakover. And then you just need larger tires which is why you pushed out the axles so far in the first place. Rear overhang is always the problem in trucks moving the rear axle forward is just going to make it worse. And the rear end will swing even further out than it already does. Extreme rock bouncers have their axles all the way out don't they?
