      Then the plan, such that it is, worked...😋 I WAS going to use background music and bought the rights for several pieces, but TH-cam has a bad habit of de-monetizing and issuing copyright strikes until you appeal - which can take weeks. For these videos we decided to play it safe and use sound effects instead of the music.

      @@bosnianbillI would have preferred no artifical bg instead and let the raw machining sound picked up with mic stand for the background instead, because those sound effects were awful. During the sped up scenes, either the sped up machining sound could be used, which Actually sounds pretty well in other machining videos on youtube, or you could cut out machining sound that matches the section you are doing and apply it precisely, so even if the video part is sped up, the sound sounds pretty normal alltogether anyways.

  • @sebastiannielsen

    My personal opinion on the cap, is that I think it would feel better and more high quality, if the cap/handle was made tighter. I think it flops around too much currently. I do understand its important that it doesn't rub against the cylinder due to imperfections in fastening the actual pick into the cap handle, but I think such things can be perfected by making an indent in the pick, that the set screw will center on, and thus the pick will be 100% centered in the cap handle, thus you can have it pretty precise Close to the cylinder.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hear you, and the design is not nearly as slapped together as we imply. We did experiment with a tighter cap. We found that when the tolerances between the cap and body were tighter they drag against each other in varying amounts based on how much tension you have on the lock, and how much torque you are putting on the disk. In most cases, even with light to moderate tension, the feedback was dampened to a significant degree, negating any benefits of having a new pick. This happens because the cap is supported only at one end, where the wire is held in place with the two grub screws. Even with flats (yes, we did that too), the cap cannot have tight tolerances. We experimented with lithium grease too, but is still bound up and had the added benefit of making a complete mess of everything. Lastly, we did a prototype with a ball bearing raceway (from a spinner), but it also had problems with binding and centering. The design may not be perfect, but it is the best we can do while still keeping the manufacturing time and cost reasonable.

    This is a bit off the subject, but you usually respond to inquiries, so I have a burning question this morning.
    As a property management handyman, I would like advice of what you do when you walk up to a strange door lock and then... a strange padlock on a iron gate. I do a couple of rent house evictions a month from my base of 600 rent houses. Like today, I'm headed to change locks on a house a renter abandoned but left a lot of stuff there. Often means he'll try to sneak back in or give his key to someone.
    -
    Here's what I do. First I try a regular snap gun. a Snap Gun works better for me than a bump key. Opens about 50-60% of residential doors. No dice? Then I try my Bogota, City, and a favorite homemade rake key. Still no? Then, I try my favorite oversize (.153 tall) half diamond. It is sorta a rake/pick combo. Usually I can at least get a false set to go from or can pick completely open. Still no? Then, I am finally reduced to standard SPP. Finally. If all above fails, I start destructive entry with my drill or diamond blade cordless grinder. On iron gate padlocks, I just quickly cut the chain, cable, or shackle. I like my cordless Dremel with a diamond cut off blade for the padlock removal. - ( Note: On the residential door locks; most of them have 2 or 3 spool pins but nothing fancier, that I've ever found).
    -
    I'd be interested to know what process you would use. We are not all SPP guys but use our lock talent, tools and techniques for our jobs. I'd like to get better, smarter, and faster about the process of non-key entry and share it with my Handyman community.
    Thanks Bill

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your approach sounds almost exactly like mine. Instead of the snap gun I use a Kronos, and instead of the dremel I use a Makita 18v die grinder.

    • @padlok1520
      @padlok1520 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think you should be doing better than 60% with the snap pick in the locks you describe, my advice is that you practice the snap pick til you can hit closer to 90%. and i'll share with you the advice given to me when i started: 90-95% of the locks that you can pick you can pick with just a lifter (hook) and tension tool. the lifter is still by far my most used pick. it rakes, zips bitchpicks and spp's .

    I've got to wait again? OK, want to see this badly. Hope you make some to giveaway or sell.

      Well, we DO have a plan but you'll have to wait for the final videl (#6) to see what it is...you won't be disappointed. What I CAN tell you is that we will not be making any ourselves to give away or sell... They take roughly 20 hours EACH to manually machine and put together. Since LPL is a lawyer and I am a Mechanical Engineer, I cannot even GUESS what we'd have to charge for one...

      @@bosnianbill OK, had no idea that long. Yes I'm patiently awaiting. Sort of, kinda. LOL!!!! Thanks for the quick reply.

      @@bosnianbill 20 hours to make? Does that include the drawing phase and the pieces that are messed up before the final pieces we see?

    Love the sound effects! I think these have been the best videos the two of you have ever done - I hope there'll be more. How about the two of you get together to create the best lock you can come up with?

      And replace it with....? My gimbaled camera does not record sound. If I use music, even music that I've bought the rights to, TH-cam will de-monetize the video and give me a copyright strike until I go through their painful, and several-weeks-long appeal process. I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place...

      @@bosnianbill 😕 Ugh, that's even with the "free music" available in the TH-cam editor? That's LAME. Personally, I'd most prefer you to do a voice over/narration, but I'm just one guy and it's not even that big of a deal. I'd still watch if you did 5 minutes of "nails on a chalkboard" as the background effect. I didn't mean to seem ungrateful.

    Hey guys the alcohol ain't helping like it used to..... one huge question what the hell is supposed to keep the pic bar (middle bar) stable?? It's going to be hard to keep that bar from warping with all that extra room in the tool.

      The picking tip itself? That's encased by the body, which is not hollow, and held by screws at the back. The nose is held by the screw handles.
      As for warp prevention, honestly that's just a workplace hazard. Picks bend and break regularly, that's just part of life.

    You do nice metalwork. But there must be something wrong with your lathe! None of my lathes makes noises like that. But i wish they did. ;-
