  • Victoria Cross hero Lance Corporal Josh Leakey, 27, has been recognised for gallantry in the presence of the enemy.
His actions in Afghanistan on the 22 August 2013 single-handedly regained the initiative and prevented considerable loss of life.
Lance Corporal Leakey describes in his own words what happened on that day when he was deployed on a combined UK/US assault led by the United States Marine Corp into a Taliban stronghold to disrupt a key insurgent group.

Tom Thumb I’am not sure what you mean , is it that Churchill had gained experience from Gallipoli, or that Churchill was a great military leader anyway , for me Normandy was a success because the Germans had 110 divisions fighting the eastern front and 7 fighting the western front (Normandy ) and with the financial muscle and manpower of America and the fighting spirit of the British and allied men , don’t get me wrong , I have the utmost respect for our fighting men , but our governments never have .

Just to RESPECTFULLY update you. A previous CMC ( not that non TBS zoomie Amos ) changed a couple things.
      A. Veterans are encouraged to salute when appropriate.
      B. Former Marines no longer exist ......if you were a Marine it’s a lifetime thing so your specifically there are no more former Marines
It may be semantics but I get it. Sadly , I can never claim that honor. Even though my former name was HM2 ( ESWS ) ( FMF ) , I even earned a Navy Com from General Mike Myatt , USMC , ( Ret ) For Desert Shield, Desert Storm and a CAR.
It’s like these non binary , politically correct freaks ....
I was a Corpsman with two tours with the FMF. I don’t identify as Marine, I identify as an FMF Corpsman. I lock my nasty up when the Hymn is played but never do so for anchors away. Please don’t call me a Sailor ... yes. I drank the cool aid , it helps digest crayons

RCR and Canadian Air Force get more recognition and support in the US than by the Canadian government. They're some of the finest soldiers and airmen in the world, but are under the threat of disbandment (RCR) if someone screws up enough.

Where was all the clapping at 8 pm on a Thursday for the forces serving in the gulf war and the war in Afghanistan . All of a sudden it’s on our doorstep and it effects the civilian population and they’re all out clapping for the NHS ( and yes the NHS are heroes ) but as normal the military go unnoticed when their making the world a safer and a better place giving up their lives and limbs .. Good to see a military person getting recognized. Hats off to you !!

Fun fact, the Victoria crosses are made out of a cannon captured from the Chinese during the Opium Wars. It is estimated that there is enough material for 80 more Victoria crosses.

    • @JammyDodger45
      @JammyDodger45 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrong.
It's Russian cannons captured at Sebastopol in the Crimean War and there's 1/4 of the amount you stated.
However there is another bronze cannon from the same action which is on display at a certain Officers Mess in London and this is where future medals will get their metal once the current supply runs out.

Nothing to be sorry about mate, we all make mistakes!
As an aside the Duty Officer at RAF Cosford has to go over to Donnington on the last Fri of the month to sign for the security of the metal and the 4 medals which are held there. It's held in a strongroom at the far end of a huge hangar filled with wooden packing crates (think of the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark) it's weirdly spooky but also oddly poignant. I did it in late '11 whilst on a month long course at Cosford (I'm convinced the course was that long simply so officers could go on the duty roster) so I'm certain that I've physically held the very VC presented in this video ... which is as close as I ever got to a VC in my 30yr career! 😁

He made it clear that he was second 'on scene' & that this other person was not only giving aid, but was shielding the casualty, just as he also became a shield for them. Great to see his sharing of the heroism & his natural team spirit, shining through during this video, just as it did when it was needed in that engagement !! Thanks for fighting for us. The VC is very rare. To actually be lucky enough to be awarded it in person is even rarer. Normally a medal that is awarded posthumously. People that have been awarded the VC are not normal people. They may think they are but they a far from it.

Fastnail Isn’t it a bigger national shame that this country gets involved in these illegal conflicts? Or are you happy with all that?
And whilst we are discussing what you call “illegal immigrants”, where are most of them coming from? Could it be from the very regions UK troops are being deployed to in those same illegal conflicts?
The first thing you learn in combat is to avoid getting caught in an enemy ambush. You just ambushed yourself!! Well done.
