Such a great video and great meeting Andy. And that was so sweet that Andy was hesitant to read Pride and Prejudice because he knew how much you loved Jane Austen and what if he didn't care for the book. But so glad he loved it too!

Thank you! And yes! Omg I was dying trying to supress my laughter when he repeatedly told me how he didn't remember the plot at all because he thought Lydia and Wickham ended up together, but that was clearly wrong. I managed to maintain a good poker face I think. 🤣

You guys are interesting and EASY to listen to, because you have a real (loving) connection. I used to enjoy listening to Regis Philbin and his real-life spouse, Joy (as opposed to him and his regular co-hosts) for this reason. I don't know why this isn't done more often, spouses co-hosting shows together. Because it's always heartwarming, encouraging, to see loving coupledom in action. While learning. It's an added benefit, an important one in my book. (Maybe because I grew up in a home where "loving coupledom" wasn't always apparent? I'm way off topic here, just thinking out loud. I think Dr. Phil must be looking (HAVE been looking?) to present a positive example to his viewers this way, by walking on and off stage with his spouse; but we don't see them interact much, they don't discuss things. I think such discussions, between loving spouses, must be vicariously nourishing to many viewers. If somewhat unconsciously? Still not game to try Jane Austen, though. LOL! I just tuned in for our hostess (!), I hadn't seen in a while. (You would be perfectly cast (physically) in a period piece, yourself!) What I found most interesting about your discussion was to see, be reminded of the fact, that the same piece of writing can mean different things to different people, at times, in places, can be saying different things; how SUBJECTIVE our reads can be, how wonderfully US we all are -- individually, separately! I don't know, it underscores our humanity to me somehow...? Our souls TRYING...to meet, to communicate, to reach outside, beyond ourselves? Over something WORTHY... Or such DISCUSSIONS underscore it? Quick, hit COMMENT now, you fool!)
What a lovely video. Pride and prejudice was one of the first books I listened to on audio (librivox version) and it both got me into Jane Austen and audiobooks.

SO GREAT to hear a man's perspective! I especially appreciate your insights into Jane's character because I always thought that there's kind-hearted and then there's just oblivious. I think audio books are such a great introduction because it's hard to read Jane's subtle tone of sarcasm in some of the dialogue. Now I can imagine Lizzie rolling her eyes at "shelves in the closet" but it's easy to whistle past that passage without realizing that she is not literally having "happy thoughts" about them.
I think we now need Andy's first impressions on all his next readings and watchings!

I believe that a great work of literature is great precisely when it makes people think about its content even years and years after and that those opinions can be diverse or contradictory. Loved this! I found it hilarious that Andy hated Jane 😅 I definitely do think Jane Austen named Jane Bennet after herself as a joke because Jane Austen clearly did not think well of everyone! And I love Andy’s idea that Mr Darcy’s proposal might have actually been really nice.
Yay!! Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I love Andy's idea about Darcy's first proposal as well. And yes, Jane Bennet is really the only character that I give any credence to regarding biographical readings of names in Austen.
I think Andy has clocked something that we don’t talk about much in this community and that is Jane Austen 100% sought to show the folly in Jane’s nature. I of course don’t dislike the character but there are numerous places where Austen makes fun of her naïveté and compulsive goodness. But since her intentions are undeniable pure, we sympathize with her character.
Absolutely! I don't dislike Jane either, but there is definitely a critique of her character to be read within the pages of P&P.

It has happened!!!! I knew I would rub off on him sooner or later. I think he should check out The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. He would get a real kick out of it. I never read the book but, I love the Lizzie Bennet Diaries and the creativity of how to put a modern twist on a classic story. Also, Andy could not have worn a more appropriate shirt!

I don't think I have ever thought of Jane Bennet at all, so you have given a perspective that I am now thinking about.
Right!? I never thought much about Jane before Andy brought her up.
Andy is absolutely correct about Jane and Bingley. Bingley was well cast in the 1995 adaptation as a tail wagging happy puppy. As written in the book he’s happy in the country and when he leaves for the city he’s happy there too. Lizzie gives Bingley and Jane a shot at the end by saying you both are just too nice and your servants will cheat you, etc.

@@KAZHE63 the husband’s perspective who says actually the first proposal might have been a really romantic one but Elizabeth didn’t get it because…prejudice. And that Jane is not only sweet but annoyingly naive? These are takes on the book I haven’t heard of in the female dominated Austen community.

I think he usually reads fantasy, but surprisingly he doesn't consider himself much of a reader. I'm going to try to have him do a video where he answers questions about his reading life soon!

Thanks! I hope to convince him to do a video where he chats about his experiences with reading. He usually gravitates towards fantasy I think and likes Neil Gaiman quite a bit, but I'll let him tell you himself too. Are there any other questions that you think might be fun to have him answer?
