The 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice is in my opinion better then the 2005 version. I love Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firths performance in the mini series!
Just nope. I love the Darcy from 1995 dearly, but the chemistry is so bad between them. And the rest of the cast is just awful. But its pride and prejudice so its also very nice to watch.
I just adore the chemistry between Darcy and Elizabeth in the 2005 version. I’m also just someone who is super attracted to beautiful aesthetic, which is another reason I prefer the 2005 version. But I do still enjoy watching the 1995 one. It’s nice that there are multiple adaptations so that there can be one for everyone! :)
I think personally I liked the way that characters are characterized better (or more accurately to the book) in the 1995 version, especially Lydia and Jane, and this version spends a lot more time on seeing the sister dynamic and building smaller storylines up, but I prefer the romance better in the 2005 movie (THAT HAND FLEX SCENE OMG) and I just feel like the movie has more rewatchability (?? not a real word) than the show does.
Glad to see some love for northanger abbey. Such a fun read. I found myself laughing out loud and grinning so many times while reading it. Henry is absolutely adorable and my kind of guy.
Persuasion and Northanger are her most underrated works. Captain Wentworth and Tilney are just absolutely incredible. I found Emma tedious to read, but your review has a level of persuasion in it (hah) that's making me consider a reread.
Okay but I watched that intro about 10 times. 😍😍😍 I’ve never read a Jane Austen novel but you’ve convinced me that I need to! Your hair & dress is just AMAZING!
My fav Jane Austen is definitely persuasion and I really enjoyed the film. In fact I am writing my own version of the story to give a bit more depth to the main characters
I hiiiighly recommend Persuasion 1971 and Mansfield Park 1983 adaptations. Both miniseries, very faithful to the books, amazing casting and the deep emotions are palpable.
Oh my gosh YES YOU DO! I read it during October last year and it was perfect for that spooky time of year! Also highly recommend the film. Pretty sure the entire film is uploaded on TH-cam 👏
I’ve read all of Austen’s novels except Emma and my personal ranking would be: 1Persuasion (I personally relate to Anne the most out of all of Austen’s heroines and I love the letter at the end) 2Pride and Prejudice 3Northanger Abbey 4Mansfield Park 5Sense and Sensibility
I think it is funny that Jane Austen said that she wanted to create a character that only she would like, and I think it makes sense with her time era. The reason why so many women love Emma in today’s world is that we all desire and can have freedom that Emma had. Emma is my all time favorite as well:) good to know i’m not the only one whose #1 is not pride and prejudice! this was such a lovely video, and much needed during this time, it made me so happy!!!😊🖤
I am a huge Jane Austen fan of all of her works, but all I could focus on in this video is how absolutely perfect and gorgeous your hair is!! I always find it beautiful, but wow!!
I loved this!!! Cosying up to watch Austen adaptations is just perfect when it's cold and rainy. Sense and Sensibility is my favourite but I really loved hearing your thoughts! Have you seen Lost in Austen? If not, I recommend it!
Jane Eyre was that book for me! The book that introduced me to the beautiful world of classics. Love Jane Austin as well. I haven't yet read all her books, I'm lacking 2, but this video makes me want to!, Especially since one of the two is Northanger Abbey! Thank you for the video!
I read all of Jane Austen's novels in college, and I highly recommend everyone read all her books at least once. They are all fantastic! Wait, Sense and Sensibility the romance is with Col. Brandon. Not Willoughby. Also love the 1996 adaptation! My top 3 are Emma, Pride & Prejudice, and Persuasion. Fun video! Love your aesthetic!
Totally agree! They are all so amazing in their own unique ways! And I should have been more clear when I was talking about Willoughby lol I didn’t want to spoil anything, but I meant that I loved reading about him BEFORE things with him went downhill. I loved his strong personality and the way he interacted with the characters. But yeah, obviously didn’t love him in the end 😂 Thanks so much for your kind words! So happy you enjoyed the video! 💕
In defense of Fanny Price, while she is soft spoken and shy, she is strong when it comes to maintaining her morals. She never backs down when everyone around her hounds her to marry Henry Crawford. If she was weak, she'd have given in. Not to mention she is the way she is in terms of shyness because of the abuse she suffers from the family, but mostly her aunt Norris. I hate Mrs. Norris so much. (But still, that being said, it's also my least favorite.)
Agree with you about Fanny, but not about Mansfield Park. I like the book because of her strong character and because it addresses more serious matters such as slavery and class distinctions.
Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are my favorite. I feel like the characters are easier to relate to. The wit shines so well in Northanger and Persuasion is in my opinion the more mature and realistic romance she has written. I agree with a lot of what you said too, but even if I had not, great video-you clearly know your stuff and explain your reasoning well. Also, stunning outfit and intro!
Oddly enough Mansfield Park is my favorite. It is a tour de force of 'realistic' epic novel writing that Dickens made famous. The main character Fanny Price is a bit lackluster but her character is principled and beautiful. Manners vs Character. That's the theme and Jane works it to perfection. My second least favorite is Pride and Prejudice - maybe because I'm a guy and it is the most "chick" story with all the buzz of who's going to marry whom. My absolute least favorite is Sense and Sensibility. A bit green, not Austen's fully developed style. I do appreciate your love of Emma. What a fine novel in every way! The language, the satire the comic drama - but also the depth of moral insight that Knightley provides really ranks it high.
Hi, I do not mean to challenge your preferences in any way, however i just wanted to say something about Pride and Prejudice. The who's marrying who part of the story was more than just a girly trope. Mr. Collins was to inherit the house after Mr. Bennett dies, that is why Mrs. Bennet was so obsessed with marrying off her daughters. In a way it's a very telling view into the anxieties of the society the characters belonged to. A woman without any means to earn for her self, and with no right to property was completely dependent on the prospect of good marriage to sustain herself. I remember being really struck by it when I was younger.
@@divyak9980 I understand that being a woman in that day and age is a sad state of affairs. Somehow the flutter over eligible bachelors just doesn't do it for me.
Mansfield Park is a great novel. Looked at objectively it is Austen's most mature and finest novel. There has never been a good adaptation - they all get Fanny's character completely wrong.
THAT EDITION OF PRIDE & PREJUDICE IS STUNNING 😍 omg I want it! Haha I hardly EVER hear people talk about Northanger Abbey! But gothic literature you say 👀 *bumps book up the tbr* I KNEW Emma was going to be your favourite! I haven’t read it but I have watched so many adaptions of Emma (minus the latest movie smh) & I have LOVED the character of Emma everytime. I think she is so relatable, especially to teen girls. This was amazing Desi! 💗💕💖💫
Hey Desi, I love this video! I read all of Jane Austen's books in the past year, and my favorites' are Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and Emma.
As someone who is about to dive into Jane Austen as well as classics in general for the first time, this video was sooooo helpful! Thank you! I didn’t actually know what most of these books were about and I will probably rewatch this again before I start reading.
I appreciate your review, but Persuasion is my favorite JA novel (but that me be because I've only read P&P amd Persuasion). The 2007 adaptation is great. Maybe I will pick up the other books too.
I love your intro! You showed one of my favorite aspects of the 2005 P&P film, the way they really give us a fairy-tale romance. Keira Knightley reading a book with her dress dragging in the grass is something straight out of Beauty and the Beast. However, I like the 1995 version best because it really captures the humor from the book. Btw, I hope this doesn't sound rude, but there were definitely a couple spoilers in here about Persuasion & Emma!
I've only read two Jane Austen novels so far: Emma (my favourite) and Pride and Prejudice. I've read many classics before but Austen's writing is different from anything else I've read so I definitely used audiobooks, reading a bit then watching a bit of an adaptation, and summaries to help. I'd also recommend the chapter summaries by course hero on youtube if you want a one minute overview video of each individual chapter. they don't go into too much detail but are helpful if you just want to make sure you understood the gist of the chapter or need to refresh your memory!
I LOVE this ranking. Jane Austen also was my introduction to classics! Your thoughts are super close to mine; I still have to finish Mansfield Park (90 pages left!!) and I need to read Northanger Abbey, but Emma is my absolute favorite of her novels, and your problems with Sense and Sensibility were mine as well. Also totally agree on the Pride and Prejudice ending. You have so many tips on getting into Jane Austen and they probably would’ve been so helpful to me as I got into these books! Also I think I did the same thing w Persuasion, as it was my first old classic I ever read and my first Austen. Great video!
I did not like northanger abbey when I read it, but your enthusiasm for it is telling me that I need to try and read it again 😅 My favorites are Pride and predjudice and Emma, I re-read at least one of them once a year and have seen the different TV and Movie adaptions more times than i can count 😅
To each their own! ☺️ Definitely okay time not love Northanger Abbey 😁 I just recently read Emma for a second time! I only got into Austen’s novels recently but I can definitely see myself rereading at least one or two every year. They’re just TOO GOOD to only read once 🙌🏻
I've been wanting to read all of Jane Austen's novels for awhile. I read Sense and Sensibility in high school and didn't like it at the time, but since then I have played Mary in P&P and Elinor in S&S in community theatre productions. Performing in these shows gave me a better appreciation for Austen's humor, and I think I would appreciate her work a lot more now.
Dramatizations are very underrated! I wasn't able to understand or appreciate Shakespeare until I saw Shakespeare in Love (thanks to my high school teacher for showing part of that in class!) It really gave me a lot of insight into the inflection and passion of some of his work.
omg this intro is incredible!!!!! ive only read pride & prejudice and loved it! but this makes me wanna pick up more especially because you put pride & prejudice at number 3!!
I've read all her novels except Mansfield Park. I have started it but I just couldn't get into it. Great video. Also if you like Emma, you should watch the BBC adaptation with Johnny Lee Miller and Romola Garai. It's my favorite!
Your passion for Emma made me pause your video, track down and watch the 2020 Emma movie, and then returned to watch the rest of your video xD Lol, I absolutely loved the movie and now I need to give the book a go! I have read a few Austen’s books but for some reason Emma just never jumped out at me - honestly let’s just blame it on Pride & Prejudice holding my heart hostage xD
OMG This was so fun to watch! You make me feel like we're just chatting about Jane over tea, which I love. We share a favourite Jane Austen book!! Emma is by far my fav of all Jane's stories. I love how lighthearted & fun it is! I also relate to Emma more than I'd like to admit. haha She's a precious character even with her imperfections. I've also read Pride & Prejudice (& loved it!) but nothing can quite beat Mr. Knightley & the comedic tone of Emma. You make me want to read Northanger Abbey next!
Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot are my favorite Jane Austen couple. Anne is the opposite of Emma from her mannerisms to her proficiency at the piano but she still has a beautiful character arc. Sometimes in a big family you get swallowed up by other peoples' wants and needs, especially if you are living with the divas Anne had to live with, and Wentworth sees her. Even when he is bitter and mad he still thinks of Anne. She is always herself and in this book she learns to trust her own judgement and, in 18th century terms, go for the life she wants. I love the idea that true love conquers true heartbreak.
So aesthetically pleasing! I really didn’t enjoy Sense and Sensibility, I literally cannot remember anything that happened that’s how unmemorable it was for me :(
I have to admit that I have watched "Pride and Prejudice" a few years back (maybe 10-ish) and I absolutely disliked the movie. Thanks to you I have given it another shot, and what can I say: I ADORED IT!! Northanger Abbey and Pride and Prejudice are waiting in my abebooks-cart to be ordered 😂👏🏻🥳😍
I absolutely loved this video ☺️ Northanger Abbey is probably my favourite, probably cos of Henry Tilney. I just find him utterly perfect. It's just words! He loves words and there are some words he just absolutely hates (well, one) and I find that hilarious. Plus his and Catherine's romance! The whole message of the book is so clever. Persuasion next cos of how down to earth it is. Plus the letter 🥰 Again, words! That letter is... Same reaction as you 🥰 Pride and Prejudice is lovely too. It's such a feel-good book and all the dynamics. It's honestly been such a long time since I read Sense and Sensibility, so 🤷🏻♀️ Nothing much to say there 😅 From other videos I've watched, everyone is really flawed, which I love! I couldn't get into Emma or Mansfield Park, but I have watched a webseries based on Emma called "Emma Approved" and I'm so glad I watched it cos, you know, Mr. Knightley 🥰 His sarcasm and directness. I'd love a friend like him. One to call me out when I'm wrong. But Mansfield Park 😕 From what I've watched, it's not a very happy one so I'm not gonna bother. Great idea about listening to audiobooks! I listened to Emma, which is much less effort 😅 That's the kind of reader I am 😄
I have a complete jane austen edition and i knew there were 7 books so it took me a hot minute to consider whether you are correct or if my memory glitched. Found my copy, the only one you didn't read was Lady Susan😂
I loved the Intro.. I just keep watching your video’s.. now I’m thinking about getting Emma and Pride and Prejudice, because of your review.. Now You’re getting me into a lot of these books so I’m getting excited for to get them!!
ahh you look beautiful in this video 😍😍 I've only read Pride and Prejudice, but I definitely want to read more of her novels this year, and this video is a sign I need to finally pick them up!!!
The 2009 Emma miniseries is the absolute best, I really disliked the 2020 Emma in comparison. I highly recommend it! I also really love the 2007 Persuasion with Sally Hawkins. Persuasion is my favorite novel, I just think the themes of longing and being stuck in your own way come to such a beautiful conclusion. I also love that Austen was writing a heroine who was not popular or witty, just good and simple. Anyway, thanks for sharing your list, they really are all wonderful!
so fun to hear your opinions! I dont remember if Ive read PP...:) seen the series and films so many times, PP from childhood! I read Sense and Sensibility to get into charachter for a Jane Austen ball some years ago. that was totally fantastic, i got to play my favorite sister Marianne. totally fell for my mr Willoughby! Emma was great and Persuasion too. Ive just bought all her books in one, such a beautiful gorgeous book so now I can read MP and NA too. I personally like the films and series better. the tv series are just so good, both Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. the tv series of SS is SO GOOD. yu have to see it :)
I just love you.Iam fairly new on your channel and Iam just in love.... Thank you for bringing so much joy to those of us whom love classic novels and just beautiful things from baking to old world things .😘 Great review..
You gotta watch the BBC version of Emma. It's a 4 episode masterpiece! Emma it's also my favorite, I love Clueless as well and I did try to watch the new 2020 movie but after 5 minutes... I was like "NONONONONONONO" 🙅♀️😬😅
I definitely do! So many people have recommended it to me now 😃 I think I’ll watch it this week! Thanks for the recommendation! 😁 Hahaha 😂 I can definitely see why the new Emma film isn’t for everyone. I can’t wait to see how good the BBC version is 🙌🏻
@@DarlingDesi let us know what you think of it :) maybe a vlog of it would be nice. And yeah, you're right. Isn't for everyone indeed. None of my janeite friends liked hahaha maybe we got too spoiled with BBC Emma, Clueless and the web series Emma Approved (which is also great and I def recommend)
Ramola Garai is absolutely brilliant as Emma, and I truly adore the 2009 version which doesn't stop me from liking the 2020's. It's a visual masterpiece with good humor and music. Similar is with Pride and Prejudice. After watching the 2005 movie and reading a book, I couldn't force myself to watch the 1995 version (it seemed so old and unattractive!). But once I did, and then, again and again, I fell in love with it totally and couldn't stand 2005 movie for its changes of plot and modernized character behavior. It's an impressive movie when the 1995 version is very accurate when it comes to emotions, little signs during conversations and etc. So my proposition is to love both versions and appreciate them for those distinctive traits which bring us so much joy 😁
I don't like the 2020 version too! It's odd. My favourite version is the one with Gwyneth Paltrow, I think because it was the one that introduced me to Jane Austen. The Romola Garai version is very good as well!!!
I’m watching this 10 months late. But have you seen the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice 1995? It’s a miniseries with 6 episodes and it’s like somebody took a book and made it into real life. There’s only two scenes that are not true to the book but they are amazing and they work. In my opinion it’s much better than the 2005 version. And Colin Firth is a perfect Mr. Darcy.
I really need to read the books. I’ve been a Jane Austen fan, period films in general, for many years. My favorite adaptations are the 4-episode BBC miniseries of Emma with Johnny Lee Miller. He’s my favorite Mr. Knightley! Also the angst that builds in the 2007 BBC adaptation of Persuasion with Sally Hawkins. The ending is worth the buildup. I enjoyed listening to your breakdown of each story. Have you watched the adaptation of North & South, featuring Richard Armitage? It’s a wonderful mini series!
I'm reading Emma right now so I can watch the movie during my birthday month! I'm LOVING it!! Also, wow. You are so creative and talented with your filming & editing!!

Emma and Knightley are everythhinggg, I’m obsessed with the new adaptation ❤️
THEY ARE GOALSSSSS 🙌🏻

my standard for what a man should be is forever ruined by henry tilney. he set the bar VERY HIGH.
Kate Heffernan which book was that? Want to see the movie.
@@judithberman7566 Northanger Abbey! It is so good!
Yes! His sense of humor(he is amused by the irony and absurdity he observes), honor, and integrity is hard to match!
I love Persuasion the most out of all the Austen novels! The 1995 television adaptation is the best one
I also love the 2022 movie version!
"Mr Darcy is a butthead"....best review ever 😂😂

I've read many classics before but Austen's writing is different from anything else I've read so I definitely used audiobooks, reading a bit then watching a bit of an adaptation, and summaries to help. I'd also recommend the chapter summaries by course hero on youtube if you want a one minute overview video of each individual chapter. they don't go into too much detail but are helpful if you just want to make sure you understood the gist of the chapter or need to refresh your memory!
This is a flawless video!
Awww Jackie 😭😭😭💕💕💕💕
One hour away! eek I can't wait!! ❤
Such a beautiful video 🦋
( absolutely agree about "pride& prejudice" )
Thank you so much! 💕
I absolutely agree with everything you said about Emma!!!! Henry Tilney is the best male character ever written
I'm so happy to see someone else love Northanger Abbey as much as I do!
Oh my goodness I love that we share so many of the same thoughts!! 😃 And yes, definitely read Northanger Abbey! I’m sure you’ll love it! 🙌🏻
I bought some of her novels the other day for some reason I just got this urge to read all her books and I can't wait to see how i like it
Ohhh yay!! I hope you have such a good time with the books! I already wish I could read them again for my first time 🙈
how do you outdo yourself EVERY time oh my goodness I can´t
Omg stooooop 😩😭💕🙏🏻 You’re so nice 😩
The 2009 bbc adaptation of Emma is amazing you will love It!
I’m so excited to watch it! Planning to watch it over the weekend 😃👍🏻
I have yet to see the 2020 adaptation but of the ones I have seen the 2009 miniseries is the best!
You really should watch the movies Austinland and the Jane Austin book club ! I’d love a vid of that !!
1. Pride & Prejudice
2. Persuasion
3. Lady Susan
Ooooo CANNOT WAIT!!!! Also, I would love it if you could do more vlogs in the future (only if you feel like it). They are my happy place. :) Love you!
I definitely want to! I just haven’t had the time in the past couple months. But I’ll hopefully be filming one soon! :)
Dramatizations are very underrated! I wasn't able to understand or appreciate Shakespeare until I saw Shakespeare in Love (thanks to my high school teacher for showing part of that in class!) It really gave me a lot of insight into the inflection and passion of some of his work.
THE INTRO 😍
I agree with your ranking except I would switch Emma and Pride and Prejudice.
omg this intro is incredible!!!!! ive only read pride & prejudice and loved it! but this makes me wanna pick up more especially because you put pride & prejudice at number 3!!
I've read all her novels except Mansfield Park. I have started it but I just couldn't get into it. Great video. Also if you like Emma, you should watch the BBC adaptation with Johnny Lee Miller and Romola Garai. It's my favorite!
Thank you for the recommendation! I will definitely check out that adaptation 😃
My favorite too !
Seeing you talk about these books the past few months has inspired me to start reading Jane Austen’s books, which I’ve been wanting to do for YEARS!
So glad I found you!! I absolutely love your channel. Thank you for all the quality content. Keep it coming!!!
Emma has such amazing adaptations! Love the Gwyneth, the Kate, the Romola version, yet to see the newest.
I am so happy someone else loves Henry as much as I do!
I really recommend the 2009 Emma mini-series with Jonny Lee Miller, Romola Garai and Michael Gambon. It is very good.
I would not say Anne learns to trust her own judgement. She has always trusted her own judgement and does not regret anything she did.
This video is so good I can’t even!! 😍👏🏻 love your top 3 so much as well!! Emma is just 🥰👏🏻
HI CHERIE!!!!
Dude how many have you read? Which one is your favorite?
Pastel Pages I’ve read Northanger Abbey and Pride & Prejudice. That’s it 🙈 I liked Northanger Abbey more than Pride and Prejudice 😅
Cherie Moore NICE 🙌🏻
I love this video please do more classic videos❤️ your aesthetic is amazing 😍
I have a complete jane austen edition and i knew there were 7 books so it took me a hot minute to consider whether you are correct or if my memory glitched. Found my copy, the only one you didn't read was Lady Susan😂
I loved the Intro.. I just keep watching your video’s.. now I’m thinking about getting Emma and Pride and Prejudice, because of your review.. Now You’re getting me into a lot of these books so I’m getting excited for to get them!!
ahh you look beautiful in this video 😍😍
I've only read Pride and Prejudice, but I definitely want to read more of her novels this year, and this video is a sign I need to finally pick them up!!!
Your video is so aesthetically pleasing to watch
Love the P&P vibe intro 💙💙💙
The 2009 Emma miniseries is the absolute best, I really disliked the 2020 Emma in comparison. I highly recommend it! I also really love the 2007 Persuasion with Sally Hawkins. Persuasion is my favorite novel, I just think the themes of longing and being stuck in your own way come to such a beautiful conclusion. I also love that Austen was writing a heroine who was not popular or witty, just good and simple. Anyway, thanks for sharing your list, they really are all wonderful!
Thank you for this amazing video 💚 I want to watch all the movies now! But first read the books of course. I just read Emma and I loved it!
What a great intro 😍😍😍💕💕 love it
Wow what you said about relationships ending @2:30 💓👌👌💓 I was not expecting to be hit like that
so fun to hear your opinions! I personally like the films and series better. the tv series are just so good, both Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. the tv series of SS is SO GOOD. yu have to see it :)
an abridged pride and prejudice os the only book i have read, but might read the other jane austen books after this video
Oh my god, the castle they use in Northanger Abbey is actually the castle in my hometown! Starstruck, I'll definitely have to read this now!
Thank you thank you thank you for saying that Emma is your favorite. Now maybe more people will understand me when I say that Emma is my favorite lol!
Hahaha yessss 🙌🏻 Love knowing that I’m not alone!
Northanger Abbey was my first Jane Austen too. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Carol Cabrita the BBC version of Emma is my favourite as well, I absolutely do not like the 2020 version
My favorite is also Emma!! Still have to read Northhanger Abbey and Persuasion, I’ll read them in July for Jane Austen July!!
Hi pride & Prejudice is a favorite and the mini series from 1995 ,is my all time favorite and felt it was so well done ,
I'm reading Emma right now so I can watch the movie during my birthday month! I'm LOVING it!!
Also, wow. You are so creative and talented with your filming & editing!!
Ohhh so glad to know you’re loving it! The film is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
And thank you so much! 🥺💕 That’s so kind to say!
