I wonder if the reason why people see children’s behavior as “cringe” is because children are more likely to be unapologetically enthusiastic about their interests, and some people see that as naive, when it’s mostly just that “adult life” shames you about liking things that children also like

    • @Crailtep
      @Crailtep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +125

I’d absolutely agree, modern life and capitalism make working class folks feel like they shouldn’t enjoy “childish” things and only consume “adult” things. It’s mostly just another way to divide the population.

I think is more likely because of how "intense" some kids are.
Ex: When they just can't stop bringing the thing they like to any conversation, even if it has nothing to do with it...
Getting overly angry and/or "threatening" those who criticizes, or simply don't like, their interest...
When they harass other fandoms because they think their interest is bad, or something...
Oh, and when they start to create overly sexual fanfics...
I've been in game fandoms like Undertale, and that's the point where the hate begins: Kids/teens overtake the fandom and act like little shits, and the rest of the fans, not wanting to be associated with them, start to shun their interest.
That's why in some cases the game/show resurfaces again after many years: Because people didn't hate the thing itself. They hated the people associated with it

What’s funny is most people who are part of cringe culture are preteens and teens who are now incredibly insecure and are trying to push themselves away from there past selves, as a result they begin to dislike anyone and anything that might be seen as “childish” as they are to scared that others may insult them for it. Cringe culture represents the entire idea and stigma of trying to not be seen as “different” we see it in clothing, gaming, tv shows, anything that people widely use and appreciate has its own form of cringe culture and forces everyone to suppress a true them to the point that they now can’t even openly express themselves.

I was both a minecraft and fnaf kid, and I can tell you that the reason its taken these games this long to turn around and become popular again is that these kids have left school and realised everyone has "cringy" interests. Part of growing up is embracing the things you love without the shame, and without the social pressure from school, people realise that fitting in doesnt matter

@@pieofchart There are billions of people on this planet can still play other games, especially for Fall Guys and Among Us. In terms of popularity, I guess the part where Fall Guys is getting downhill is justified because there are some cheaters and hackers who wanted to win the game so bad.
Among Us, however, it's also getting downhill since it is getting boring to play. My experience on playing Among Us is easy but it can be frustrated if some Imposter will lurk around and have a chance to kill you while you are finishing your task. But being an Imposter is a lot of fun but it can be a rare case when it is up to the owner of the thread to choose who is gonna be the killer. Since the Airship update is coming at the end of March, I wonder what's gonna be.

@@poweroffriendship2.0 Same man. I played Among Us like two-three times and those weren't even times I'd willing play by myself. I saw that my siblings were playing it so I wanted to join too. Eventually I just kind of stopped doing it because I couldn't bring myself to like it anymore. Fall Guys... I never played it XD. It'd be worth playing if I actually had to motivation to play anything but Roblox... but yeah
Though at this point the memes of Among Us probably won't fade until a little bit, the fact that Among Us was cooler than Fall Guys solely on popularity always confused me. I mean, sure, Fall Guys isn't as popular as Among Us.. but they are both just games that you have the option to play. Fall Guys may not be really mainstream but that doesn't change the fact that it's still available for new players everyday. Don't know how that equates to a dead game..

I think the most toxic point in cringe culture was when people started to make fun of well intentioned beginners in the art and animation community, with many of those beginners being children. You’d see all those “Animation Meme Cringe” videos and most of the time, the videos were just making fun of beginners without offering any constructive criticism and more often then not, users didn’t even know or consent to their videos being put in these cringe compilations. (Different scenario if they did consent or intentionally submit their videos though) . It was especially cruel when they threw in videos that were made by skilled children, who were not beginners and had improved over a fast period of time .

Nah, the Jojo "fanbase" is one of the most unfunny fanbases I ever seen. They repeat the same jokes over and over again, quote the show over and over, claim stuff are a reference to it when Jojo is already a Fist of the Northstar reference, and try to make Araki forgots when they just can't pay attention. It isn't all bad since the artwork and music is pretty good, and I appreciate the people who translated Part 6 - 8 since it let me discovered some of my favorite manga but man the vocal minority is really annoying.

    @kingdemomidas2397 ปีที่แล้ว +37

Dude thanks for this. I was the victim of cringe culture recently.
I do voice acting and character acting with a theme based around gold in a 15 year old Valve FPS called Team Fortress 2.
I was drunk on new years and after a long night of being there for a bro that had bad girl issues and needed someone to talk to, I headed home and had a few more drinks and hopped into a TF2 lobby. I was doing my normal thespian posh satirical acting bits, mainly inspired by Monty Python, and having the pleasure of seeing John Cleese live, I wanted to bring my own spin to the lobby.
Things went really well! At least for the first 50 mins or so. Then someone joined and started talking massive amounts of shit in a very monotone voice. This person was named Venusian Rapper. He is the guy that both Vorobey and Pyrocynical covered recently in videos.
This guy spent 30 mins harassing me, using URL exploits to view my artwork of my OC character, calling it "cringe" and siccing his fanbase of like 3k on me. I had to private over 1000 screenshots, and remove my artwork showcase on steam JUST to get away from him. He was kicked from the server by an admin that was called into handle a cheater and noticed his harassment towards me.
    All seemed ok but well...
He then uploaded two different videos on me totally out of context and filled with ALL of my socials, my friends socials, my group, my wifes socials, etc. He even showed how to use the URL exploit to view and harass my profile to others on the net, encouraging witch-hunting and brigading!
The ironic part? Mr "Your art is cringe" turns out to be a pedophile, who drew Corn of minors online for fun and money. He also beat his girlfriend and suicide baited her with her own gun, shortly after her grandmother died. This guy is a nutcase who got exposed hard, for things WAY worse than a couple "Cringy" pieces of self insert TF2 art.
He got exposed so damn hard the little coward privated his profile as he already got 2 strikes and was terrified of losing his channel to a third. He even made a burner youtube where he has an about me BEGGING for a second chance.
TLDR, let people enjoy things. If it isn't against the law, and isn't morally wrong, who fucking cares. Cringe is dead, life is short, be you unapologetically, fuck the haters. They are just insecure and jealous, wishing they could be up front about the things they like, with a mind firmly set in 2015, pity them, for they are dead inside.

There was a kid in my 7th grade class who had autism, and he was a massive Undertale fan. We did a project together, and he was constantly making Undertale references and expecting me to get them, and I was just so annoyed by it. However, I think it was my 9th grade year, and I finally got around to playing the game, and it quickly became one of my favorite games I've played. And now, I kinda regret how I acted with John from Language Arts, and if I could ever go back in time, I'd hang out with him more. And with Sonic and FNAF, I've been a fan for as long as I've known those series (first Sonic game was Heroes), but I stopped being as open about my love for those series after hearing people talk about it being cringey to like those series. I never understood the hate for kids in fandoms myself. I always felt they have room to grow simply due to the fact they're so young, and that we should let them have their fun. Manchildren on the other hand, are what I hate about fanbases. They get so worked up over childish things and it turns out they're like 30 some and won't be changing anytime soon. Worse is that from my experience, most of the hate for actual children in fandoms come from people who act like manchildren, as if bullying children wasn't childish enough. They don't act like any kid, but like that school bully who picked on the nerds, and considering they do this after having gone to school and learned enough that they should know better by now, I don't have much faith in them learning from these mistakes, especially since all they ever do is gatekeep and bully people for being unabashedly themselves. Twitter is full of these people, to the point that there is an actively common argument there in defense of haters. Like, "let the haters enjoy picking on people for liking things they don't", I'm not even joking. Never on any other website have I seen such active defense for haters. They also constantly try to conflate it with criticism even though haters aren't constructive about it at all. And it's not about letting people not be interested in things either, it's moreso about not wanting people to ruin others' days for enjoying something that Twitter is so against. Funny is that this is the same site that mocks Reddit for having such unanimous hate for Fortnite, but then constantly use defense of Fortnite as an excuse to hate on other specific things for weeks on end, as opposed to simply defending it for the sake of defending it.

Cringe culture is why people who are actually autistic and very passionate about what we enjoy don't talk about what we enjoy to others. It's a big reason I didn't want people to know I was into Batman for a long time as an adult, because I was mocked for every single interest I had in middle and high school. Harry Potter, Danny Phantom, Spider-Man, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and yes, even Batman (all because I had a lot of Joker T-shirts and liked to wear them because he's one of my favorite Batman rogues). It really messed my self-esteem up and made me very insecure as an adult. I've gotten a lot better at it now, but every time I see people say "that's cringe" or "you're being cringy" it just... it feels really wrong.
I'm with you, dude, let people enjoy what they enjoy, and if it's REALLY getting too much, ask them to please stop making so many references. If people would have told me, "Phantom, we aren't into Batman and don't particularly care which Joker you think is coolest, it's a little annoying, tone it down" I'd have toned it down. Instead they talked behind my back and called me the 2008 version of cringe. Please, don't do this to kids, it could be the difference between someone having a decent self-esteem as an adult or not. Nobody deserves that.

it seems that a lot of “cringey” behavior is really just nurodivergent behavior and it sucks a lot cause it fucks you up so bad when you get older. i wasn’t bullied very bad at all and i’m still terrified of telling people my interests even if they’re the one who showed interest in it first.

I think it’s so adorable how excited he is to be at a convention for a thing he likes and even getting to ask a question. He must’ve left that day thinking it was the best day ever! Yes his question was absolute nonsense, but kids around that age especially ask/say nonsensical things all the time and you just have to let them roll with it. My personal way of handling them is just spew silly nonsense back at them and they’ll be satisfied.

Something similar happened with Warrior Cats around that time too. A number of people, namely a guy called PK Russel, tried to frame it at something cringey citing some of the lower quality videos and some of the more childish fan fiction kids wrote. However, this was at a time when Multi Animation Projects were all the rage and Warrior Cats was one of the biggest communities for them. It backfired horribly because the biggest things that came up when people looked for stuff on it were absolutely gorgeous animations. Additionally, Warrior Cats differs from things like Cuphead in that it’s not a new media- it’s had a stable community on the internet since the early 2000s, has a much more established and smaller fandom that’s largely of adults with a long lasting interest in the series, and generally keeps to itself. From all of this, it’s way less susceptible to outside backlash than other communities.

Similarly, I just don't get why people shame kids for producing "low quality" works. There are numerous cringe compilations online that includes "badly done" videos from children, not unlike the kid singing Minecraft songs in this video. I really can't understand the ultimate goal of people who make these compilations: do they want to make themselves feel better in comparison? Do they want to purge these kids off of the internet? Do they just do it for the clout? If it's the first, the kids are TRYING to improve and learn from their mistakes, while these people are just indulging themelves in content that they dislike but force themselves to watch. If it's the second, do they expect everyone to be perfect right after touching the Internet, or assume that learning is nonexistant? If it's the third, what has this whole process brought them? Will they even be known online as a valid creator rather than a landfill?
Anyway, thank you for reading my rant, and thank LS Mark for this video.

Things like the Rainbow Dash jar and Chris Chan’s bigoted rants are more classic examples of justifiably getting secondhand embarrassment/disgust. However, if I saw some 10 y/o’s drawing of Sans, I’m not gonna bully them for it lol

In 20q6 when i was 11 cringe culture was at its peak, and i was apart of it, later as I started leaving cringe culture, cringe culture never left me. Everytime i want to express myself my mind would be like "your acting cringe, stop it." I gave up my ambition for art at age 12 because i thought to myself "it looks bad, show this to anyone they'll cringe." And i gave up. This still affects me to this day whenever i try to do anything to express myself i immediately stop and delete it/rip it. Whenever i try to talk to make a connection with someone my mind immediately goes "stop this because they will cringe once they find out who you are" this comment right here is taking up all my mental energy because im trying to fight my thoughts. Fuck cringe culture. I abandoned all of my hobbies and ambitions to appease no one.

Thankfully I'm not like that anymore and enjoy the things I like and I'm glad cringe culture is dying. People should just let kids have fun.

i've never understood why some peoples justification for not getting into a piece of media is the fanbase because they're "cringe". why would other peoples interest and expression of that interest in something determine how YOU interact or feel about it? it's genuinely so sad to see people turn down games, shows, movies, and other franchises just because of the attention it's getting? if you think a fandom is cringe, then don't interact with it. it's as simple as that and it should stop you from exploring new media

Honestly cringe culture really did hinder my artistic and creative work, cringe culture was RAMPANT in the art community when I was still a mushy-brained preteen so it really fucked up my view on what’s “good art” or “bad art”. Animation meme cringe compilations and deviantart cringe made me believe that if I did or made something cringey I would get publicly humiliated and thus I forced myself to make art that would be viewed as “acceptable.” So for the longest time all of my character designs were desaturated to the point of near greyscale with only one pop of color occasionally and all of my character’s personalities were so bland they were basically stone statues. It’s only since quarantine started that I really started expressing myself in a way that makes me happy, because I grew out of my self-hating cringe-fearing child self.
And cringe culture almost completely affected people like me with autism, since we have social issues and can get easily fixated on stuff others feel is odd or “cringe.” I went through ALL of the cringe fandoms; FNAF, Baldi’s Basics, UnderTale (I met some of my closest friends in this fandom), My Little Pony, anime, Minecraft (I still love this game), and throughout most of these phases I really liked furries (but I wasn’t really open about it). But my own self-hate and the fear I would be seen as cringe and bullied for it made me really afraid of talking about stuff I enjoyed to my peers, leading me to feel isolated and alone. And they found out I liked anime and furries and were RUTHLESS, 8th graders can be needlessly cruel to peers who stray from the norm. But now I’m an autistic 17 year old who’s still processing and trying to get rid of this mindset of trying to appeal to everybody I meet.

Honestly I am someone who gets "hype fatigue" but I fully acknowledge that's what it is and never call it "cringe". I think in my case, something like the lego shorts guy makes me cringe specifically because he reminds me of me, and that's really the only reason I would call something cringey. It's secondhand embarrassment. But even then, it's not a word I really use and people need to calm down.
FNAF being popular with kids is a little weird since it's a horror series about murder but hey, whatever. I was in the grocery store as a 31 year old with my Fnaf shirt and some little kid pointed at me and excitedly exclaimed I was wearinga Freddy shirt. And that doesn't bother me at all. It's cute.

Remember the quotes, where it said something like
"If you like something, and other people don't like it, their opinions don't matter, do what you do"
"Its fine to like something if you dont keep slapping it into other people"
"Its fine to dislike something if you don't destroy it"
    I think everyone forgotten that.

Unfortunately Cringe culture doesn't die. It just moves on to other things.

This is why I like r/chadtopia , because it takes a massive shit on the concept of cringe culture by praising people’s bravery for doing traditionally “cringey” things

I can relate to it taking a lot for a socially insecure kid to put themselves out there. They're just trying to connect with people and make friends like anyone else, so leave them the hell alone. If they make mistakes, again just like anyone, they'll learn and grow from it. They don't need the Internet's bullshit bullying to discourage them from trying anymore, that helps no one.

@friggy Personally I find Reddit way more tolerable than Twitter or Facebook 🤷‍♂️

@friggy Did you even watch the video? You're acting exactly like the people he's talking about. Chill.

All I can think about now is that kid on the stage singing the living tombstone's song, poor kid, he was probably bullied so much after that

"Don't be afraid to be unabashedly you" - one of the best quotes I've ever heard! Loved this one man.
    You nailed it.
