Travelling with a Dog - Road Trip Australia Podcast 4

  • We’ve set our date to leave for our big Aussie adventure - now do we take our dog or not?
    Leaving Rusty at home wasn’t an option for us! I got her when she was a puppy and she has been my best mate since - so it was a no brainer for us. Yes, sure I could have easily left her at my parents’ house, where she had grown up her whole life but she was ‘my dog’ and I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving her. After travelling on the road now, for close to 4 months I still don’t regret the decision to bring her one bit! People say it’s such a hassle travelling with a dog and I strongly disagree. For the many disadvantages pointed out, there is equally as many advantages of travelling with a dog.
    Con’s
    - not allowed in National Parks
    - extra mouth to feed
    - some accommodation places don’t allow dogs
    Pro’s
    - needs daily exercise so means we get exercise
    - constant dog cuddles (rusty is a major sook!)
    - conversation starter - she is pretty cute
    - good guard dog / bug catcher / entertainer
    Number one disadvantage here in Australia, is dogs aren’t allowed in National Parks. We know there are some spectacular things to see in most National Parks, so our easy solution is to camp just outside the NP. We generally can day trip into the NPs and see what we want to see in roughly a 1-4hour window, meanwhile Rusty is catching up on some sleep in our caravan, which is parked outside the NP. We leave our caravan all secure and locked up - with the top canvas windows open for air. She makes herself at home on our bed and literally just sleeps the time away! She has water, food and sometimes if it’s a little hot we leave our cordless Milwaukee fan on for her, plus she can move around and stretch her legs. She is not a big barker or yappy dog - so we are lucky in that respect, she doesn’t make a noise, unless someone is breaking in. We always ensure we take her for a big walk, before and after, if we do leave her for a period of time. Some people might argue that’s its cruel but with Rusty it’s not - like I said, she just sleeps! It’s like a child - after having her for 8 years, I know what she does and doesn’t like. In saying that, not all dogs will like being left so you need to decide whether your dog can cope and of course have a comfortable enough setup for your dog (shade, water, ventilation etc). We definitely don’t condone animal cruelty, and never leave her if it’s a hot day!

    if i am out and about and know i will be leaving my blue in the car for a short time in the heat i find leaving frozen 2lt bottles of water in with him helps as he can lay near it and it also gets the cold condensation on it and he can lick it in case he knocks his water over or something.

    Rusty is one lucky dog. A lot of people would say spoiled LOL, I would say very loved and very well cared for in view of being on the road. I have seen you carry Rusty when a hot day walk got to much for him. God bless you for making your furbaby a very happy pooch.
    Keep up the casts, love them

    Really helpful info for us, we have 2 German Shepherds and a lil Westie to take camping, they all love snuggling up in under the canopy of the ute while we sleep in the roof top tent but hearing other people's stories' is invaluable IMHO ;-) .... so thank you so much, you've inspired me to think about creating some content around this issue too :-)

    Great clip, we travel with two Jack Russell and like you would not leave them behind. We have not done the travel you folk have, but have not found any “ no dog areas “ that we have not been able to get around. If anything we have meet more people by having the dogs as people come over to get their dog fix.

    My parents sold my dog when we traveled around Australia as they didn’t want to be restricted (I was 7) I’m now 19, living independently and have two beautiful cattle dogs. I’m wanting to take my babies with me around Australia again. My red boy (7) isn’t dog friendly either as he’s fear reactive of dogs that are too playful or bigger than him but he’s in love with my blue girl (10 weeks). Thanks for your video, it was awesome

    Hey guys! How'd you go with the coast of WA and Rusty? We are planning at the moment and it seems like a lot of National Park areas and people are saying you can't even drive through with a dog? Similar to Uluru? I can never tell whether it's just people travelling with no dog making seem dramatic or if it's for real!! Thanks guys! Love seeing your adventures.

    • @Sparkysontheloose
      @Sparkysontheloose  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jill, we have been in WA for almost a year now! Haha it's so good over here. Yes dogs are banned from all national parks and if you live in WA it's pointless owning a dog as you can't take it anywhere. Sigh.. rant over haha. The best thing to do is find a pet sitter in a van park or ask the van parks what you can do. You already know what we do and we are so fortunate Rusty is very chilled. We thought Broome was really anti dog before we got there but it wasn't that bad.

  • @mareelewis7639

    I would rather keep my baby in the caravan as it makes them feel safe. Until people understand they should not judge as the van is better as it is there home. They are so relaxed. I am the same with mine.

    Thanks for all your tips, we travel with a blind Maltese shishu , our dog is very happy being left in her comfortable environment of our van. Just curious if you came across many van parks that don’t allow dogs being left on their own in the van?

    • @Sparkysontheloose
      @Sparkysontheloose  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of them don't, but if you have a good dog that doesn't winge then you get away with it. Its not something that we like doing but only in small bursts.

    Taking for a walk is crucial. Our 2 chihuahuas come with us when we go gold prospecting if we want to go to national parks we leave them at home. They behave so much better while caravaning (i call my girl my miniatue kelpie) but i know they would yap & guard if kept inthe van without us.

    I hear you, our fur baby Rex is a jack russell kelpie cross and also hates other dogs. It is because he is so possessive and protective, especially of my wife. He is cool once he knows the dog and will happily play, but when on the lead he is one angry bugger. PS, he is the best child we have, the human versions are a PITA
