You'd be better off using a 1/2oz Hybrid w/ a Prawn
For anyone wanting to lesrn how to skip. There are 3 things that will, with out a doubt, happen.
1) youre going to backlash.
2) youre going to hit, bounce, and deflect off everything within a country mile of your target
3) youre going to come up with cuss words you never knew you knew.
Be patient and persistent. You WILL succeed. When i first started learning, i grabbed a spinning rod with a wacky rig. Its easy to skip, itll be alot easier to learn the "roll cast" to skip, no backslash, and doesnt damage boats if your hit them tryingnto skip. Tight lines!
Raise the rod as you follow through on the cast. It will help the lure to stay on top of the water. You're casting the lure like you're trying to skip a rock😂😂
Yup you got the motion right just keep the follow thru going more
Once you get it down down follow through anymore, you can use the rod tip and your thumb (by applying a quick bump of tension) to get the bait to go right or left and actually get the lure to turn and go around things as you skip it. Check a video of Dean Rojas w/ Jay Kumar somewhat explaining this. It really does work.
It's called a roll cast
Love seeing the community interaction. Keep the discussion rolling. I’m learning.
The BassfishingHQ channel has a few different good videos on how he skips but what I've seen, it all just comes down to practicing..... a lot!
Yeah Tyler is really good at skipping and I agree he had some good teaching videos on skipping #bassfishingHQ
I’m a Lews guy and I agree that there is nothing special about but… I do agree the super shallow spool and overall performance of the reel is amazing for skipping. I have my brake control to max and spool tension loose like you normally run it. Once you get more comfortable skipping I think your really going to deal the reel. #heaters
Right on! Thanks Dude!
The thumb method (tight drag and wind with your thumb on the spool) is invaluable for the backlashes you will get while practicing. Also, I find holding the reel upside down and letting the loops hang makes the backlash come out much easier.
Love seeing content of learning new techniques. Picked up some pointers on the next time I go out.
Favorite reel I've ever put in my hands. Hardly even skip or pitch with it. Love it for everything. Plan to buy plenty more and the new ss they have with the light spool. Dude just works
Grabbed the 7’5” heavy fast heater per your recommendation sir . Was going to snag some of the new sun mask but all the cool ones was sold out . Hopefully I can get a few back up trace baits before the LOZ bass bash . Thanks again for the Rec on the heater 😎.
I appreciate you buying this reel and doing this video. The reviews and learning is good content.
Bro where that reel shines is for casting weightless plastics like 5" senkos and flukes, for me the best reel for skipping is the okuma hakai dt and the tatula sv
Love skipping weightless swnkos and 4.5 robo nest. Also cast like a dream with weightless plastics. Biggest thing iv found IA to not go over 17lb test. Everytime I put 20 on strip it within a half hour for 17
Moderate is unpredictable for skipping. I’m still in the process of learning skipping but a 7’ heavy st Croix dock sniper really helped. Raise the rod up in the end of the skip to allow Extra line to both come off the reel. It also helps the bait fall straight down.
Usually the oil in the bottom of the box the reel comes in is from the reel itself. Normally the reel will come pre lubed. This has happened to me as well with new Lew’s reels as well.
You're welcome for the Spro Rat Justin, can't wait to see you catch a good bass on it.
Thanks so much brother!
I’ve got 2 of those reels and I love them!
I have one and been using it for about 2 years as a BFS reel. It works great with 8lb line and the right rod casting 1/16 ounce lures. And, it’s 100 bucks less than their actual BFS reel.
I have twos Lews Pro SPs. One RH for skipping and LH for pitching. Love them.
Right on
Supposed to use braid to skip, also the reason you want tension on the spool is to not backlash when your lure hits the water. Your setting up your reel for normal fishing circumstances, when skipping you want it tight
practice makes perfect...i remember watching a vid of a dude teaching this and kept emphasizing keeping your elbow tucked to your side as you roll cast...don't let it flare out. it actually helped me out. great vid.
Appreciate the guidance
Justin to be honest I’ve seen a lot of people say this reel is Lews attempt to make a BFS reel. I know some folks around where I live that are spooling those reels up with 2lb diameter 10lb test braid. Those people I am talking about are trying to throw 1/16oz Crappie jigs with it. Back when I used to bass fish I could never get skipping down.
Yeah dude, like most people are saying here I watched many videos on skipping. Keep that throwing elbow tucked in to your body, release low and follow high with the rod tip. Brakes on half, tension at a solid shmedium speed and have at it. I found skipping a paddle tail on a chatter or jig to be easy going along with a senko Texas or wacky rigged. Best of luck man! #HeaterSquad
Truth!!! About the reel forsure 40 size spool only difference and not sure if you watched bass fishing hq’s vid on skipping but it helped me some
For me it’s more about the jig and trailer then the reel. Berkley makes a great skipping jig and creature bait cut short flatter baits help it skip. I trim the skirt to right behind the hook. I’m generally fishing from a kayak and use a 6’6 rod. Keep throwing it.
I view skipping like golf it’s just dang, crap, SOB then that perfect cast under the dock and out the other side. Man that was awesome.
Cheers
Follow through with your cast and raise your rod tip at the end of your cast. Your right the biggest advantage is it only holding 40 yards of line. Less line to back lash.
You’r brutal honesty has got you another subscriber!
Appreciate you
Love the video. Out there learning is still better than being stuck in a office
I taught myself how to skip last year. It definitely takes practice. The correct reel definitely helps. I personally like the Daiwa Tatula SV TW over my Shimano Curado DC and Shimano Scorpion DC. Once you catch or raise a bass by the technique, it is as addicting as froggin’, you won’t want to put it down.
This comment has nothing to do with fishing, but I just watched your video on The Dodo with you saving the baby deer. Absolutely incredible of you. Your empathy for this animal is something that I want to share with the third graders that I teach. Thanks for taking the time and effort to help others. All the best. Dave Crissman
Tell your students I said hello!
Thanks Justin for the review buddy. I've been on the verge of getting this reel or the tournament series.
for skipping you need a longer and bendy rod. its kinda like whipping it like fly fishing also the weight of the lure cannot be to heavy or it will catch the water then the texture of the lure also comes into play if you use skirt jigs vs rubber frogs vs texas rig craw
Thanks for the tips!
From what i saw on another video spool tension is key on this reel. Supposed to adjust it till it freefalls but stops once the bait hits the water. No idea if that works or not just what I saw
The Daiwa Tatula SV TW is were it’s at for a skipping reel, I’m not the best baitcaster operator by any means but I can skip no problem with that reel, it doesn’t blow up with huge backlashes, I also didn’t fill the spool completely.
I have one and feel the same about the skipping as you said. But I wish every reel I own had that shallow spool 🤔
Need the deep spools for deep cranking!
I’ve wanted to try that reel but at the same time I’ve seen guys say they actually prefer their dc reels over that reel so I think I’m gunna stick to my shimano sand keep trying
Loved the video it's not easy for sure, from my experience the hybrid jig skips better than the swimjig,I'm not gunna tell you your doing things wrong, just keep practicing everybody started where you are, keep it real brother, enjoyed
Lews should have given a full size spool with that reel in addition to the small capacity spool. That way when you get more comfortable you can swap the spool for one that holds more line and actually have a functional reel.
Not a bad idea
“Somehow” 🤣 had me rolling. The only bait I’m even close to being able to skip is a Deps cover scat.
I agree with having the reel on the rod when spooling. At least if not using a spooling station that holds the reel and line firmly. Straightness when spooling I guess is the ultimate goal.
Exactly! 👊🏼
Best advice given to me about skipping was start low finish high and BLat also had a good tip. Take 3 setups that are the same because your going to blow reels up lol
Good tip I learned and use. Cast your lure out to the max distance you'll be skipping. Before reeling it in place 2 pieces of electrical tape across your spool on opposite sides. This will limit the amount of line you can backlash.
This works great. But in Texas it’s 110° and the glue on the tape will melt and get on everything. Thank you for watching.
Skipping just takes a lot of practice and that reel will make it easier to practice but you can do the same with a 80 100 or 150 size by casting out like 50 yards put tape on the line then reel the other back in. Ive seen guys take arkie or skipping jigs and practicing skipping on a smooth concrete garage floor. Always raise your rod tip as its going out. Im not the best at it anymore but i use to could do it lol. My vision makes it hard for me, i have no depth perception.
@JustinRoyal. The only advice, which I picked up from the G-man, is to follow your skipping motion with a controlled steady lift of ur rod. (Full rod not just tip)
*this is my 1st ever TH-cam comment so hope it's reaches ya*
Appreciate ur vids brotha. Keep em comin!
I’m honored! Thanks for the advice dude!
I got that same cheap line spooler in my garage, got it from Cabelas for like $8 and it came on a cheap ass suction cup lol. I ended up taking the suction cup off and put some threaded inserts into my work bench and screwed that bad boy in and she works great. Also put a threaded insert into the leg on the bench to spool spinning reels, wish I could post pics but I’m sure you can use your imagination… works great!
This one does not have a suction cup. It clamps to the tabletop.
@@JustinRoyal oh okay, mine looks identical minus the clamp… much better idea than a cheap suction cup lol. If anyone else was dumb enough to buy one like mine, screwin em into the table works awesome 😂. Anyway, appreciate the video, think I’ll stick with a Shimano MGL 70 for my skippin needs lol.
I love fishing and first time watching your video, but the reason I subscribed is because of that badass Pantera banner you got! 🤘
333
I’m definitely like you when it comes to spoiling the reel everything has to be super tight I found out you put it on nice and tight the more line you can get on there
if i may say mr. just royal, the ipt means inch per turn, also that means is that every half or full turn of the handle, whatever the number sais on the box, thats how much it takes the line on the reel
Thank you
@@JustinRoyal your very welcome mr. justin royal, kep up the good work you do with your videos because i have been watching your videos for @ least a couple plus years now
My abu 5500 record old school round reel does the same thing . Don’t get hypnotized by all the settings. A fisherman can cast any reel by holding the rod at a 45 and letting the lure fall at your own speed
I watching your videos and I have my bells on your videos and I'm subscribed to your videos and 👍 🙏
I start with super tight everything and loosen as I get in rhythm. Blows my my mind how some anglers can literally hit a 3” gap in a dock from 60’ out. There’s a pro named Andy ? That was on an Edwin Evers video. Freaking skipping sniper 😂
I purchased the same reel thinking it would help my skipping ability ! Nope ! I still suck at it. I think its more to do with the underhand technique and a very fast rod tip ! Thanks for the honest review. Now I don't feel so bad ! LOL
I can’t be bull squashing my people. Honesty is the best policy.
I personally like a longer rod for skipping,I feel like I can keep the tip parallel with the water easier. But you have to thumb it a little even with a dc reel. I had to start with the tension knob tight and just start backing off. And in my opinion the length off the tip is personal preference I change it up depending on what I'm throwing and how frustrated I am at the moment. Best of luck sir. And why roast? the sport is all about trial and error!
Yeah I’ll skip with anything from a 6.10 to a 7.4. But for my dedicated setup, went this route. Thanks for watching man.
@@JustinRoyal I forgot to mention I use a 7.6 to 7.11 but I'm a short guy at 6.6. Love the videos and the progress is fun to watch.
Sharing the journey...sounding a little like Bob Ross. I just put electrical tape over the line after making a long cast. Love the video.
Happy little backlashes
Leaving a little more line out than usual before you make your cast really helped me.
10-4
Try one of your DC reels set on max control for skipping. Better for skipping in my eyes. I enjoy your channel Justin.
Thank you
I bought that reel last year when it was first released. Justin, I have yet to skip jigs without backlashing, so I know your struggle. I was actually pumped because in the Lew’s video, featuring KVD, he skips it without thumbing it🤔. I’ve also watched a Lew’s video with Andy Montgomery, but you could probably give him a $20 reel and he could skip it because he may be one of the best at it. I can tell you that jigs with an Arkie head skip much better. I guess I’ll keep trying.
Montgomery is one of the best for sure. I enjoyed watching his tutorials on the subject. My favorite Andy Montgomery quote: “1s luck, 2s a pattern.”
You should try the new Abu Garcia one I have both and love both but love the Abu a little bit more
Good vid bro i suck at skipping also your not alone😂😂
Loved the Fulton Reid skip 👊👊👊
Soft hands
I can’t skate.
Loved that movie and the others were good too but the 1st was a classic.
I can skip when I'm throwing lure in the pool testing retrieves or when I a little elevated from the water but the fishing from the bank it's tough getting that clean skip I mean when there isn't a bunch of bush and trees yeah but I swear bushes and trees will grab your shit outta no where and blow your reel up and your spot up lol
Nice checkout of that reel. Mono seems to skip easier for Me compared to floro
10-4
New reel company? Lew’s has been back in business since 2008. Before then it was the first company to make a low profile reel.
New to me! Thanks for the history lesson.
Lift up on your rod after your bait hits, the water makes all the difference in the world I watch Andy Montgomery very closely and when his bait just gets ready to hit the water he lifts up on the rod. Are you feed line out with the spool makes a huge difference I got to where I could do it all day and backlash a couple times watch videos very closely with Andy Montgomery
“1 is luck. 2s a pattern.” He’s the best when it comes to explaining this technique.
I haven't practiced skipping nearly enough but one tip that I've always heard is that you don't need a special reel, just use your favorite. And the best one is make a decent cast into the open and put a piece of electrical tape so that if you do backlash you don't blowup the whole reel
Thanks for the info!
i put pantera on my bluetooth speaker earley in the morning when i take off in my boat.
Man i feel your pain. If i make a good skip it hits the float. Its like the skip and accuracy wont get together or its an exploding bird nest.
The struggle
I got better at skipping (not a pro but better) when I was told think of it like you are skipping a rock. You want to get it as low to the water as you can and the lure just skip over the top just like skipping rocks.
How do you know if the reel is good for skipping when you say you don't know how to skip?
I knew it was this reel once you said not a shimano and technique pacific I’m like gotta be the lews slp lol
Have you ever tried out any kast king reels ?
No sir
The 4.5 whale on a 3/16 keel weighted owner flashy swimmer skips phenomenally
Mannnn with a 1/2oz chatterbait and a spinning combo I can skip a 20+ foot dock but I got a baitcaster setup specifically for the chatterbaits and now I can’t skip it for shit it just skips a couple times and backlashes every time😭😭😭
Turn your centrifugal brakes to max in side
plate
when are you going to try out the Trigon?
As soon as you send the check.
I actually do my skipping with a spinning reel.
Would a dc reel be better for skipping
Probably honestly
I figure you have already tried daiwa for skipping but from what I can tell it’s the easiest to skip.
What’s the link for that spooler my boy?
Oops! Thanks for reminding me! Stand by.
amzn.to/3sG2pa5
@@JustinRoyal copy that
I believe that reel has an internal brakes.
Not fun but when you do get it down it will be so satisfying dude!!
Heavier line and a structure jig and alot of practice. I have this reel and can dock skip with no backlash and I’m not that great at it.
Right on
Bulk up your plastic a little bit. Something like a stroker craw. The flatter bulkier gives it more surface to skip. Keep working on it man!
Ok thanks!
Save the dough and just thro ur favy Shimano with a bit of masking tape lol
Pantera banner. Had to sub
333
The 25 🥶
I always skip better with a 7'5 heavy, both handsdefinitely And the 4.5 whale in a belly weighted swimbait hook or a 3/4 oz dark sleeper and it will skip like a dream.
Mighty Ducks 💪🏻 the Bash Bros.
Did you really quack at the principal?
Try holding a pack of worms under your right arm or elbow without dropping them it will help you load your rod better
Pro tip! Thank you.
What up bro? Enjoying the shows over here. But i like to skip a waky senko and i use the MF spin rod. Im not a pro at it. But ive done pretty good with it. But still be hitting the docks. Lol. Roast u bro? U roasting ur self in this heat. Lol
😂🥵
I cheat when it comes to skipping a lure i use the curado dc
Get you a Magdraft out easy to skip , also bongo doesn’t really have the body to skip unlike you bug baits are more flat and wide . No pro but I skip mags on a 745kd Curado 150 mgl . Ooooo and I roll cast and kinda shot it if that makes any sense .
I've seen people pull out 40 yd and put a piece of tape on line that way it don't backlash
Somebody should make a bait that looks like the Metallica poster in the background.
I skip the same .i need to practice more
I feel like I've seen this dock in another video.
Hey BUDDAY! Impossible. The one your thinking of, “you can’t fish the slips” 😉👊🏼
@@JustinRoyal lmao😂
Justin, when practicing skipping, start with a hollow frog. They’re the easiest thing there is to skip. Once you get efficient then go to buzzbaits (with a threaded toad or swimbait), jigs, freestyle mag drafts, etc. The best skipping reels on the market are anything Shimano with an mgl spool. Their braking system on them gives the user the most control over the reel, thus they aren’t the best for beginners. The best beginner skipping reels I’ve found are Daiwa’s with the sv spool or anything Shimano dc. Mostly because the braking in them really restrict the spool. Which is great if you’re starting but once you get really proficient they become a major hindrance.
That reel blowwwws
Honestly… kinda agree
Amazon sells refurbished reels..it wasn't even in the original packaging....you get what you pay for...
🤘🎣
🤙🏻
Maybe I’m just super skilled at sucking 😂I spit my coffee out!
