What a phenomenal lady Queen Margrethe is -- only just now learning so much about her as she leaves the throne. She has always been overshadowed by QEII and her long and glorious reign -- but this should not have been so -- this lady is just so classy, intelligent, and not a bit self-promoting. I wish her all the best.

I love her name! Margrethe... It is a beautiful name! I have never heard of it before her, and have to wonder if there are any others with her name. Her husband was in the mean part of Alzheimer's. It is not like in the movies, as most go through a really harsh time of being mad at the world, distrustful of everyone, and scared to death inside. It is so sweet the Danish people took his illness with a grain of salt and continued to support the Queen and show him kindness.

I cant get over how much Princess Isabella looks like her Grandmother!!! And in regards to Prince Henrik....he loved and her and didn't give squat about titles. He came from nobility and knew he couldn't be King. A King is above a Queen in royal prioritisation and that cant be possible cause he wasn't the descendant to the Danish crown...his wife was...so he's Prince Consort like what Prince Phillip was. They knew their roles and were man enough to love their wives and be supportive to them whilst they did their duties to their countries.

I actually agree with him, ... Why shouldn't a man be called a King consort??

What a beautiful love story. It had to be difficult, especially for a man at that time to play a supporting role to his wife. He appears to have done it very well even though he had trouble accepting it. When you love someone you also need to make some compromises in order for the relationship to be successful one. I'm sure the Queen made compromises as well that we know nothing about.

I don't agree with you Prince Henrik, has never truly been angry about the title... But it is true, that he joked about.. that if you are married to a Queen you are a King...
And he did put out a question..." If we all want equality, why should the husband of a queen not be The King concort.. when the wife of a King, is a queen consort ?"..
It was the media, that marked up that stupid story!!!
The media, always tried to make a story.. about rift between them.. often because of his humor...
But Queen Margrethe loved prince Henrik and loved his humor as well..
He was a wonderful and very supportive husband and a great and very loved father and grandfather...

Prince Henrik loyally supported his wife for all the years they were married. It was only towards the end that he said things that raised eyebrows.
Initially there was some consternation and condemnation in the public and among the media to his comments and actions, but once it was learned that he was suffering with dementia public sentiment quickly switched to one of concern and sympathy.
He was a brilliant man with many talents and abilities. Author, artist, sculptor and musician in his own right. He was as creative as his wife. He was extrembly knowledgeable in many subjects, and had a deep sense of commitment to his role in life as a royal person. He worked hard to promote and support Danish interests. He was well educated, having worked as a French diplomat in London before he married the future Queen of Denmark. He spoke five languages fluently: French, English, Danish, Chinese and Vietnamese. He was a French count, although his family’s status as belonging to the French nobility seems to have been questioned in recent years.
By the way Queen Margrethe is not dead yet ( as of July 2024). She decided to step down mainly due to health reasons and to leave the job as reigning monarch to her eldest son in January of this year.
In Denmark, we don’t crown our monarchs. Instead there is a public proclamation from the balcony at the parliament building by the prime minister standing next to the new monarch.
It was a joyous event watched by an estimated 300.000 people and millions more on nearly every Danish TV channel and plenty of foreign ones as well.
The Queen’s decision to step down, eliminated the grief of loss on such an occasion as previously this proclamation happened quickly after the passing of the former monarch.
The Queen wanted to spare her son this double burden. Now the proclamation became an event for celebration of our new King and expressions of gratitude to our Queen, who so faithfully has served her country and people for so many years.
No one begrudges her the opportunity to rest, relax and to pursue her interests as any other retired person in Denmark.
Unlike the Netherlands where former ruling queens revert to the title of Princess once they relinquish the throne, this is not the case with our Queen. She is still referred to as Queen Margrethe.

Well, Prince Henrik was not right in his head when he died. I do not know for a fact if it was Alzheimer's, but it surely was some form of dementia, and he had been suffering from it for some time. As a member of nobility and a career diplomat, he knew very well that being named King to Queen Margrethe was not possible. In addition, he and the Queen were very much partners in life, collaborating in everything. So when I read about his insistence to be named king, coupled with his desire not to be buried next to her, I knew that something was seriously wrong with him, which was only revealed very shortly before his death. I don't think he was responsible for his attitude or his words by that time. I truly think he should have been protected against making those kinds of comments which only made him appear surly, ungrateful, and unfeeling.

I don't understand why when a man marries a princess and she becomes Queen the husband actually would like to be King? When your first in love with the daughter of a king they definitely don’t tell you thing you need to know. The children can not have the husbands last name, you walk behind and you can't be King. Hopefully, his getting older made him cranky with fuzzy logic. What a lovely and stylish Queen. Enjoy your retirement/abdicated.❤❤

    • @jonesnori

The last name thing didn't used to be true. Queen Victoria was considered to have left the House of Hanover and joined the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha when she married Prince Albert. (There was a court case about some of the jewels, which had been left to the "House of Hanover". The courts agreed that she would have to hand them over. So this was very much the legal view at the time.) The Royal House remained Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until they changed the name to Windsor (and gave up all German titles) during World War I, two monarchs later. If Queen Elizabeth II had followed that tradition, the royal family name would now be Mountbatten. I don't say that Prince Philip and Prince Henrik were right to be upset about their family names, because it is a very patriarchal expectation, but they were not asking for anything new.

As a Nigerian, the abdication news of the Danish monarch her majesty Queen Magarethe II came to me As a rude shock.
Prince Henrik should have known the rules which are
A king is a male monarch and a Queen regnant shortened as Queen is a female monarch, ie King= Queen regnant.
The wife of a King is a Queen consort also shortened as Queen and the husband of a female monarch goes by the title Prince consort.
HRH the late Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh was titled Prince consort to her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The late husband of the abdicated Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was also titled Prince consort, so that's the rule.
    Greetings From Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬.

Great video! I love learning more about monarchies from around the world. The Danes are pretty much quiet & scandal free, which is refreshing. Lol
Unpopular opinion, but Prince Henrik was a brat over the title & status thing. The patriarchy sucks. A King is always a King, but even in the Royal world, but Queen’s title is always dependent on what her significant other is. That’s why there’s Queen Regnant (a Queen in her own right), Queen Consort (wife of a King), Queen Mother (Mother of a Monarch) & Dowager Queen (widow of a King). He just sounded like he was power hungry. He was given a higher title & had honors created based on his French title & that still wasn’t enough. He & Prince Philip never sat right with me over that. I’ll never say they didn’t love their wives, but just wanted to be the typical macho men of their day. It’s fine for a woman to be second to the man, but when the situation is reversed, they consider it emasculating. That’s also why Queen Elizabeth created the hyphenated surname for male line descendants.

Prince Phillip never demanded to be crowned a King though. It’s his uncle Louis who thought the Mountbatten would profit more, if the back then Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten marries Princess Elizabeth. The only thing Prince Phillip was upset about was the fact that he would be the sole man in the world who wouldn’t be able to give his surname to his children and he had all rights to be upset though.
Usually Queen Elizabeth‘s children should have been eligible to carry the name Mountbatten and not Windsor, as it was for Queen Victoria and her children taking up her husbands surname Saxcoburg & Gotha later Windsor, yet Churchill for some reason advised Queen Elizabeth not to allow it. So they kept Windsor, which made Prince Phillip upset.
Also about the Prince title .. usually a consort of a reigning monarch is referred as Queen Consort or Prince/Princess Consort, but Phillip was still just known as Duke of Edinburgh even after Princess Elizabeth became Queen, he hadn’t demand to be made into a Prince , it was rightfully to happen and it did. You should remember Prince Phillip was already Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark a Prince by birth , yet he readily gave up his titles in order to marry Princess Elizabeth of GB& NI. I doubt he would be suddenly upset about about not being a Prince lol.
Now to Prince Henry he was always a devoted companion and husband to Queen Margarethe , yet later on he suffered from some type of severe Dementia which made him act up. That’s all to it and not these men being cocky .

Margrethe was never crownprincess, since she could be pushed aside if her father had a son. So she was heir in Danish called "crown follower" or crown successor. In English it is Heir presumptive. Oh and we have had many crownprincesses beforehand as you mention yourself Crownprincess Ingrid.

  • @annicaesplund6613

So you think Margrethe will be a commoner all of a sudden. 😂
Until January 14, Queen Margrethe II is of course still Queen of Denmark and addressed as Her Majesty. After January 14, she will still be titled Her Majesty, and will likely continue to use the title Queen, but Crown Prince Frederik will become His Majesty King Frederik X and Crown Princess Mary Queen Mary. Although in Danish, Roman numerals are not used for ordinal numbers, instead it becomes "Hans Majestæt kong Frederik den 10." no move will take place, but the castle is big enough for everyone to stay where they live now in Amalienborg Castle.

I mean, if you marry the female heir to the throne, what did you think would happen? Of course you’re going to play second fiddle and be overshadowed by her. Of course you’re going to give deference to her. Prince Phillip acted the same way. They saw it as emasculating, but it wasn’t supposed to be… it was more so about having respect for the MONARCH and supporting the monarch. Whether the sovereign is a King or Queen doesn’t matter… the sovereign takes precedence.

  • @annehersey9895

I agree with Henrique that HE should have been the one to host the diplomats when Margrethe fell ill. Mainly because that WAS his milieu as he had been a diplomat before marriage. I also agree that the husband should be King Consort or something to show his importance. And I especially think it’s stupid that the spouse-regardless of sex-is supposed to walk behind the monarch instead of beside their spouse. Prince Philip of GB had the exact same thoughts and desires and it’s too bad they couldn’t have talked to each other as friends about it. I love the monarchy but for it to continue and mature, there are still changes to be made. This seemed to be more about Henrik than Margarethe! It has always sounded to me that by the time of his death, he was suffering from Dementia.

In Short: Insecure men should never marry a dominant woman. I think Prince Phillip was a real gentleman (a very rare character) who was supportive of his wife when it came to her being queen and he was not called King. No wonder Margrethe was so controlling in her attitude, handling the insecurities of her husband. A man who supports his wife; helps his offspring to be raised right.

There was a Margarethe I who reigned over Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the late middle ages along with her great nephew Eric and before that as Regent for her father

We are not republicans or royalist, we want to see freedom in Denmark, freedom of speech
Ch, freedom of thinking, freedom for common sense and fereedom to care for all people equally.
🇩🇰Free Denmark from ductatirship. It has gone too far and for too long time🇩🇰 free is from a Monarchy who have intervened several times in European politics and change its course to the worse. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰NOT a fairy tale anywhere and the media and historians want you to know the beautiful facts of a very dark nightmare.
“historians” make false claims and do not research the subject. Only one British historian has made a clear statement about the end of world monarchies by 2030. He is so competent and also censored.

Could say the same with the British Royal. As it turnes out. Prince Philip has more Royal ‘Blue’ blood running through him. Than Queen had.

I hope Prince Henrik married the girl and not the title. As Danes, we are happy about all input from abroad. But we stick to our thousand-year-old royal tradition. We only have reigning kings in Denmark. So thanks, but no thanks.

So unfair from Margaret’s , He loved Her, He deserved Being a King ! Maybe she thought better no, if she passed away first , Henrik will took the whole kingdom (!)

Henrik would have to be born as heir to take over the Danish Kingdom. And that he was not. And Margrethe is not unfair, to do wath he, she would need to change the Danish constatution, and that she has no power to.

If he had a title of king, it would be a consort, not as a sovereign. It wasn’t like back in the Middle Ages when they tried to get sovereign queens married and make them sign a document called the Crown Matrimonial, like Queen Mary I of England when she married King Felipe (Phillip) II of Spain. That marriage and those of her father’s strongly influenced Mary’s successor Elizabeth I on not marrying (smart move… history of England could’ve been very different if Elizabeth married and her husband would’ve taken more control). Thankfully, the conditions of Mary I’s marriage was that Felipe would only be co-monarch of England as long as Mary was alive. His reign of England ended upon her death.
Anyway, what this has to do with Margrethe and Henrik is that even if he had the title of King consort, their son, Fredrik, was still going to inherit the throne from his mother, even if his father outlived her (which he didn’t), he wouldn’t become King (sovereign).

Whitney in dansk. Venlig hilsen
