      Thanks Daye. We went out on a historic mission today. Four of us located the Tramline that ran from Rock Candy to 30 km on the North Fork. The towers and the even the cables are still there. It really was an impressive tram the last span between towers down the mountain was .54 miles

    This was a great video, Frank. I appreciated the demonstration with the blasting caps in the beginning and your willingness to push to get into the mines, whether it is via an inner tube or using technical gear such as ropes, makes for extremely interesting viewing. Oh, and the story of this particular mine with its little experiment of using massive amounts of explosives is a nice bit of history.

    I grew up in Monroe County, Indiana. I remember my parents warning me about blasting caps. We had quarries less than half a mile away, and even notices on television concerning warnings of playing with blasting caps. We had limestone quarries--not precious metals of course--this just brought back memories!

Well I was making one as a demo for the grunts.had 8 sticks of c4 laying in the channel but I was missing the boosters (basically two caps crimped on a short piece of det cord) used to connect all the c4 to each other... I hollered at one of my guys to run get em... Well he was eager to please and was actually running when he tripped and smacked them off a rock, blew his whole hand off at the wrist .. I've seen metal blasting caps that you stick the det-cord in and then place it in Dynamite that are not electric blasting caps

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there are two basic types electric and the powder fuse type

    • @thorble
      @thorble 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We used to wrap the det cord around the blasting cap and tie or wire it there. The det cord was then set up to time your loaded holes by placing it in sequence that you wanted. Det cord through or around dynamite sticks will set it off just like a cap. So we only used one cap to set the whole charge off. Det cord burns/explodes at about 25,000 feet per second so the dynamite always gets set off.

    You say the blasting cap was not very dangerous, but I watched this a few times and at 3:50 it looks like the cap damages/chips the concrete when it explodes... Is this correct? We used to stick the electric ones into a sack of limestone dust to put a coating over everything in a roadway to act as a fire retardant in coal mines in England !
    They saved a lot of work, otherwise we would have to cut a sack in two then throw it over everything like chicken feed ;)

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A little tricky that......if the cap wasn't well covered and there was a lot of coal dust the cap could set off an explosion. I bet the mine manager didn't know about it!

    • @gaz1tinsley
      @gaz1tinsley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you are rite ! they used to stick the cap into one sack and put another sack on top of it then hide in a manhole and press the plunger ! a hell of a lot of illegalities went on down all mines, it was all A ok till someone got hurt, then people got fined, sacked or/and put in prison ?? the buck was passed down the ranks !
      Money, money, money m8, corners were cut at every opportunity ?

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wooden barrels are the worst. They look good in a mine but fall apart in no time when the wood dries out.

  • @rossdtool
    @rossdtool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm pretty sure that I've heard that some mines get their warmth from radioisotopes in the rocks. They're very weak but because of the mass of the rocks there's enough radioactivity (not enough to be harmful) to produce a bit of heat.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The main reason is that there is a huge heat sink there. All summer there is warm air going into the mine and it warms the rock that holds the heat.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure fairly simple it is a method that I developed to navigate mine tunnels. If you are travelling along and you reach an intersection you always take the right branch. If you do that you will explore all the branches and will end up back to the portal with out having to remember where you went. It works well in simple formations. It gets tougher in multi levels and complicated stopes.

    Holding a blasting cap like Frank did to demonstrate how it works goes a long way to explaining why boys, including men, get into accidents and hurt themselves. I'd say Frank, you should admit it was the wrong way to demonstrate and do not ever do the same. This coming from a boy who learned a few lessons the hard way.

    • @thorble
      @thorble 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we had old fuse with caps like this but still the old tar black fuse. It had been frozen, outside and though not visibly wet, it made the fuse burn at a much different rate, that was quite unpredictable. Sometimes burning in quick bursts for several inches at once, and then slow burn, so the 3 minute time was nowhere near accurate. The metal flying off the exploding blasting cap is very sharp ! I also have many stories about setting these off, and of course it is exciting!

  • @Steve211Ucdhihifvshi
    @Steve211Ucdhihifvshi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    they still use nonelectric lines. not so much light by fire ie lighter, but initiated using a 22 shell and a stomper or clicker which sends fire down a signal tube to a blasting cap. Provided you tie the blast in correctly you get some pretty decent results. (my last job was tieing in shots :)

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the advantage especially on larger blasts with electric charges is the ability to stagger the detonations to take advantage of the shock waves to multiply the force of a blast.

    • @dozer1642
      @dozer1642 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exploring Abandoned Mines non electric allows the blaster to completely control the timing of each cap. Lead in lines have built in delays so after the trunk line goes off, each cap can be set to go off at any desired time. Nonelectric blasting is amazingly simple, and much safer than electric.

    And things go BOOOOM. They wanted to get at the ore in a better way, they thought. Blowing it to smithereens, wasting time. Being down there and seeing a running Packrat, their fairly fast aren't they. Aluminum will corrode in salty moist areas, it being dry there, it was safe.

    A blast like that destabilized the entire mountain, fractured the rock clear to oaklahoma :) You know they hired some young guy, who on his first day said: Yeah man, we can get more for less - there is a better way. We just load that hole with secondary and wire it up....hit that clacker and the money will roll in!!! The next day, the old hand came in and said nooooooo you cant do that boss man - it doesnt work like that - we use explosives for brute force, but we have to use our brains to place them....but boss man heard "Something For Nothing", the charges were already in place...and he said naaaa, ill listen to the young guy. Kilt that cash cow out of greed impatience and lack of respect for the charges, the earth, and the mine they had built!

    I really enjoy your videos and the material. That you cover but might be a good idea to slow down with the camera.
    you move to fast and it doesn't let your video focus half the time. kind makes me dizzy watching.

      This video was shot last year in season one. The newer ones are quite a bit bit better and we now have better cameras.

    Those hand (not all cases) , pneumatic rock drills . . can be almost as much fun . . that you can have with your clothes on , above ground , underground , well , you can join the dots , with ventilation , dust , life expectancy etc , but yeah above ground , it ticks all the box,s , like for popping , as in going about with a hand drill , to drill boulders for secondary blasting , that are too large , in this case , to create the side wall of a new salt water( dimension stone ) . . wharf .

      I would love to find out more about hand drilling. Explosives are a lot of fun......too bad about 911.
