    23:03 I subbed right after I heard the “barking spiders” and realized it was a human, and not a spider, ripping ass. Hilarious. What’s great about farting in a deep, cold mine? You could always blame the stink on sulfides and other sulfur chemistry naturally deposited in the surrounding ore. I’m surprised your H2S sensor didn’t go off.

    The amount of labor put into these old mines is incredible! This has been one of my favorites!

    Cool shot of that glacier at 3:16, Frank! That sulphur deposit at 9:48 was interesting, too. Any idea what those white letters at 10:26 were? I agree with you that the presence of that copper wire by that one ore chute means that nobody has been in there in quite a long time. That frozen ceiling with rocks embedded in it at 26:07 was VERY interesting. I wonder how long it will take before all of that melting ice that is holding all those rocks in place finally gives way and sends the rocks crashing down? You found a bunch of wheels like you show at 26:43. Seems to be no carts around for them. I have the opposite problem down here. I'm always finding carts but no wheels! Excellent video, Frank! Really enjoyed it. Very unique. Seems like a very, very cold mine and exploration. Very unlike the dry desert mines down here.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Thanks for stopping by Frank! The writing on the ore chute at 10:26 is actually blue, I put it there. It is at a major intersection and those are the directions to various open stopes. When I first explored the area last year I kept getting lost, going to places I had already explored or couldn't find locations again so I took some paint and put an x at every dead end so I wouldn't keep going down the same dead end. Then I marked the major tunnels. Ended up being there for a whole month and used a case of paint and I still haven't explored it all!
      I have all kinds of ore cart parts. The real old ones before 1905 were made of wood with some steel the ones after that were all steel. There are two kinds of wheels the solid ones that are about 80 lbs and the spoked ones that are much lighter but break. The older carts didn't have wheel bearings. I will have a show on carts next week.

      Frank, your videos are the best. One reason is that the video is not recorded on your first walk thru. It is clear you have a basic understanding of the particular mine you're in. That changes the whole nature of your comments compared to what they would be on a first stumble thru. You explain the way "ore was mined in this stope and dropped down there", etc, and you give some history of the mine. The "tour" extends far beyond a walk around the train tracks. Plus, you're an enthusiast. You have put in an amazing amount of effort, and it shows. Comparing one of your first videos to your most recent, it's obvious that you're learned a lot about mining and geology, and picked up several skills like roping.
      I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos since I discovered them about 10 days ago. I've caught up on about 1/5 of them, and I'll keep going.
      2 thumbs up. And remember to be nice to rats when the camera is turned on, or the Left Coast will scold you. Go out and get a $40 semi auto co2 bb pistol for when the camera is off.

      We have a lot of mines in the area so the condition runs from caved in and completely inaccessible to excellent. I am often amazed at how much work these old timers did using mostly gravity and mules or horses. Thanks......I am working on it!

      your very lucky! where i live there is one decent sized mine a half hours drive away, other than that all the big workings have been plugged, capped or lost from earth movement. everything i have found so far are short adits and i found one very small mine with a stoaped out area, to explore something a decent size i would have to drive for two hours or more it sucks!

    I was just down there September 15th 2020 and the ice has receded alot in the Ice Palace. You definitely need a rope now to go down where Frank was and alot more collapse since then. Bats are still in there and look healthy too. Amazing to see all of this!

    Hey from Ny! You have balls of steel my friend! Great vids and commentary. I live by a little town called Rosendale, 2 hours north of New York City. In the late 1800s it was producing the strongest cement in the US. So much so that the base of the Statue of Liberty was built from it, and also the footings of the Brooklyn Bridge along with much of the turn of the century building that created NYC. As a result we have dozens of pillar mined caves that make up the landscapes around Rosendale most of which are still accessible. If you get the time Google Rosendale cement and check it out. On one trip was took rafts to get deeper into the caves like you did with the inner tube. Great exploring but be safe man, that's risky business. I subbed and will be telling people about your channel.

    I was in a cave tour as a kid with my parents in Pennsylvania and they turned off the lights for a short time and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face!
    The miners must have had a heck of a time having light to see in the mines way back or even in more modern times.
    Have no clue why the gov. didn't do more to put out the underground fire when it first started. The underground fires distoryed the whole town!! And it is way worse still burning today!
    What a waste of land, coal ect. and the poor folks who lost their homes, animals that are still dieing.
    The number of miners that have been killed by stone falling on them, lung problems, while useing TNT ect. I wonder if any of the men's sprites might be trapped in some of the mines you guys go into or they just choose to stay for what ever resons.
    Stay safe guys/gals and thank you for bring us along.💖

    Cracking wet fart at around 23.05 which can only be applauded. Sounded more like a drowning spider. Could have caused a cave-in rather like an underground nuclear test. Must have confused the hell out of them Russian listening stations. You may have left your own sulfur deposit down there. Still if you can survive that you dont need gas masks, you are indestructable! Got to admire you Canadians for that.

      No gold was worth much more than Copper. The best price for Copper was about 23 cents a pound around 1916. Gold would have been around $18 an ounce at the same time. There was far more Copper around than there was gold!

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No actually I don't. Gold in these mines averaged less than one ounce to the ton and it would be very fine gold mixed in quartz or sulfides. There is also a lot of pyrites in these mines. I can't tell them apart. Lastly while almost all these mines are on public land the mineral rights are usually held by individuals or companies. If I were to remove minerals from an active claim it would be theft.

    yup. we have several mines in Idaho. Gold , silver, I have a co host too. Private No Class Harley K. Dogidson she's a heeler. yup ol dynamite turns bad . If memory serves it turns to a similar substance as Nitro. I've a question. Is She Playd out or closed from freezing up.? some old mines here became unprofitable, and closed. in the early 1970s we visited some friends that were in charge of guarding an old mine. thay said it wes playd out. Thay lived a low Kee lifestyle. not many chairs . My Elder tryd to move a 5 gallon bucket , as many were in the Cabin. it was too heavy . the old Woman said it was full of Beans. yup it was a gold mine. thay got nervous after that . we left .nice straight forward video.
    give the pup a pet for me. Be careful.

      Dynamite is a mixture of sawdust back then and nytro. Over time it can separate and the nitro forms in beads on the outside making it very unstable.
      It was a Copper mine mostly the price of Copper dropped after the 1918 and the deposit started to run out so they shut down the mine.

    Ice sure is an amazing method of preserving things. It stops decomposition and can preserve dead animals. That's why there are ice mummies on the high parts of mount Everest.
    Also I wish I was older since I'm just 14 so I could come out there and take rock samples.

    Hey Exploring... Have you ever looked into any of the old mines between Kamloops and Cache Creek BC ?? There are lots.. went into one.. but as kids.. obviously it was very dangerous and we didnt make it far.. with safety gear and some rope I imagine it would be quite interesting. I would like to find out how to find the names of these old sites.. :)

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I grew up in that area and have never seen or heard of any mines there except for the Afton mine that is open pit and still operating.

    • @mycarpounds
      @mycarpounds 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow really!! Between Kamloops and Savona there is a big old one up the side of the mountain.. the one we explored a bit as teenagers.. There are a bunch up Deadman Creek.. Just before Deadman Falls... There is an old old ladder coming out of the ground.. never got to look into it tho.. Kamloops is my hometown.. But on the Island now.. And there are many old mines here... fun going through the tailings. :)
      Love your Channel !! Tranquille Creek in Kamloops had a mini gold-rush around the time Barkerville was being explored. I have a great great uncle thats buried in the Barkerville Cemetary circa 1890's.. so exploring and gold runs in my blood.

      Afton closed in the early 90's.. my grampa worked there.. They are trying to resurrect it nowadays.. Under another name that escapes me. Im talking old 1800's mines.. not open pit modern stuff.

      The wheels with the short axles belong to the big 5x7 wooden carts. They have a key in the axle housing and are easy to remove.

    That ice was incredible! The rest of the mine was too... A couple things went through my head when you were beyond the glacier. What was the air like before the ice started melting (I heard the airflow comment). Was the ladder still in good shape after it thawed?

    Mines are one of the absolutely most dangerous places to explore.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Statistically the drive to the mine is much more dangerous than exploring the mine. Most people killed in abandoned mines are ridding a quad or swimming in an old quarry.

    What is a "gramby cart" and how old are they?

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Granby cart was invented right here in Grand Forks around 1910. It has two wheels on the side. They build a ramp in the mine where they want the ore car to dump and the wheels ride up on the ramp as the ore cart passes automatically dumping it as the trail rolls by.

      I have taken lots of people. the problem with that is many people aren't comfortable underground and don't want to go the places I go. Then they want to head back and I have to come back later by myself to finish exploring the mine. Maybe I should offer tours to places I have already been.
