- In this week's Class Talk, I address a common question that arises even among advanced artists: the technique of oiling out. While the process itself is straightforward, let me explain the reasons for oiling out and the three different purposes. I am sure there are more, in fact, I probably listed many more.
First, the product I prefer is Winsor & Newton Artists Painting Medium, which contains stand oil, a non-yellowing agent. I do not like using mixtures other than stand oil due to its tendency to yellow over time.
When you get started, you'll need - a bristle fan brush, specifically a number four fan brush, which is separate from their varnishing brush. The process of oiling out starts with putting the medium in a cup and using a dedicated brush to massage it into the painting.
The primary reason for oiling out is to address the sunken effect caused by the paint being absorbed by the ground, which results in uneven sheen on the surface. Oiling out brings uniformity to the painting surface, making it easier to match colors and providing a better base for new layers of paint.
Oiling out can be necessary when a painting has been sitting for a long time and the paint has hardened, becoming brittle. Oiling out helps soften the surface and create a barrier that new paint can adhere to. Left over time, sometimes a painting's surface becomes too slick, new layers might not adhere properly, potentially leading to peeling or flaking months later -- enter oiling out.
Oiling out is performed to create a more receptive surface for new paint layers. However, I must emphasize the importance of wiping off any excess oil after applying it, as the residue can remain sticky for months if not properly removed. The oil should stay tacky for some time, making it possible to paint over it the next day or even a few months later.
So, the three main reasons for oiling out: to rejuvenate the painting's surface, create an even sheen for color matching, and prepare the surface for additional layers.
