In today's video Dustin sits down to talk about the ever-popular (but injector issue having) LB7 Duramax. This Duramax literally set the stage for the whole round-eye/cat-eye lineage, and is truly an outstanding engine, considering how quickly it was developed. With that being said make sure you stay till the end because it's a good one!

I bought mine new in 2002, changed out the injectors my self in 2012 and added a lift pump and it has never ever let me down, stranded or been towed. I get over 20 MPG freeway and 17 around town. No plans of selling her, looks better than the trucks from the last 15 years too.

How many abour job. Picked up an 02 for a work truck and fell in love with with it. It has 400000km and will be laid up for a time and was thinking of doing the injectors. Thinking it might be worth it. It is a comfortable truck. I'm currently away in a beautiful Acura and it doesn't touch that old girl for just a just right comfy couch.

Ran an LB7 to 450k miles replaced 3 sets of injectors including original warrantied ones. Two transmissions, a complete front end job at 300k. Overall a decent truck, definitely not a truck for somebody who doesn’t change their own oil.

I have been working on a lb7 that was ran by an old man who took insanely good care of it. The truck has 430k miles on the clock and has is still original everything, only had 2 sets of injectors, and I am going to put its third set of injectors in this weekend and run it. Still original tranny too. On top of that it’s a California emmisions model, so it is really impressive

As a diesel mechanic i always get a good laugh at any ford guy who talks about how lb7 injectors are hard to change when every powerstroke up to the 6.4 had theirs under the valve cover while the 7.3s were easier to replace but 6.0s and 6.4s were equally time consuming if not more because ford loves to put the HVAC box directly over top of the passenger side valve cover and there happens to be an issue with that when it comes to getting the injectors out same deal with the 6.4

Truck has well north of 200K now and is bone stock with only a low level tune. Had is repainted last year and leather seats recovered. more than half of its miles have been heavy towing and I would not trade it for a brand new one. Day to day on the farm it pulls a DC 32' FMAX 210 or a 16' GN dump trailer. Playtime it drags a 42' Sundowner TH all over the country. I have only ran Rotella 15-40 dino oil and never added any additives to the fuel. All my fuel comes from truck stops and is pre-filtered through my transfer tank before going in the truck tank. I change fuel filter on truck every 25K or so.

Though we have moved on, and I eventually bought my own cars as I became of age, I can’t mistake the distinguishable 6.6 sound for anything else. At the end of the day, in spite of our new fleet of Toyotas, I believe the Duramax to be one of the best and memorable vehicles of my time, I sure do miss it. GM and Isuzu first partnered in 1971on the LUV pickup truck and then the Spectrum car. Later, GM would own 49% of Isuzu stock virtually allowing then to run the company, ultimately resulting in the Dmax. Not sure any more, but at one time, Isuzu was the largest diesel engine manufacturer in the world . Whatever the case, they killed it with the Duramax series.

got my first diesel in 2011, 2001 chevy 3500 dually. i have never seen the 22mpg, but have gotten a good average of 18 going from utah to pennsylvania crusing along i 80. picked the truck up at 150K and have since gone through all the "reqd maintenance" 150K injectors, lift pump (3+ filter/primer failures), transfer case pump rub, cp3 failure, u joints, cv shafts and a weird turbo noise pulling empty and light throttle (sometimes, havent figured out) still i wouldnt give up this truck. this lb7 may struggle a little with what i'm pulling, but if i keep it at 60-65 it dosent really complain. sure i would like the power of a new duramax, paying almost 100K to replace what i got (for 13K) is just not a reasonable option. for me the lb7 just gets it done reasonably well, i'll keep fixin her up, we will see who goes first.

Drove by the Ford dealership in the fall of 2014 on a Sunday and saw a 2003, Silverado 3500 dually. Went home and got online and checked it out. Monday I was at the dealership for a test drive. While out on the drive it turned over 34,000 miles. Went back and said I'd buy it. Turns out, the original owner just used it to pull his 5th wheel camper and when not camping both were in a shed. Math shows he only drove it 3000 miles a year, give or take. Interior was immaculate and not a speck of dirt on the underside of the truck. At 42,000 miles it started making smoke. My diesel mechanic said injectors were going to be needing replaced soon. Got that done and I'm at 133,000 miles now and no problems. Probably going to put an Air Dog lift pump on it this fall to help things out. Love the truck.

I love my LB7. Will never, ever, ever, own anything else. Just hit 300k. Was hit by a drunk driver, rebuilding the front end, then tho replace the injectors, factory, stock injectors mind you. Been Marvel mystery oiling her for the last 40k. Replaced the cp3 at around 240k, water pump around the same time. This is absolutely the best diesel I've ever used. My dad's lb7 had close to 1.3 million miles, 90% of that was towing horses back and forth across the country. I'm not sure all that was done with it, but it's still going strong. Best diesel ever. .

As I literally just rebuilt my LB7 for my GMC 3500 Dually. 😂 dropped a valve and still ran long enough for me to scrounge its parts for a damn near complete rebuild and replacement of everything old and work. New Turbo, thankfully was able to save and rebuilt heads, new injector pump, new injectors, injector lines and every pump, seal, filter and bearing in its internals and a new cylinder 8 piston . All done in my literal home garage.
Take care of the Duramax and itll take care of you.
302,000 miles and now rolling again.
Mind you this is my first vehicle. I just graduated high school and this Dually kind of fell into my lap and i just fell in love with the machine. I just couldn’t let it rot

As of now just hit 302,545 she’s finally broke in. Turbo definitely made a difference, the heads must’ve been in really bad shape because now the truck idles smoother, faster and slightly louder. For a Dually is really hops off its ass and down the road much more peppy!

I just picked up a 2002 GMC 3500 Dually. I grew up with my dad having diesel trucks. Started with his old 7.3 and then he got a 2002 Silverado with the LB7 and i WANTED THAT TRUCK. He bought it brand new, and he is just about to do his second set of injectors at 250,000 miles. the first set of injectors went out around 65,000 miles. The truck I bought needs injectors, thats the reason I bought the truck so cheap compared to what dealerships are selling them for. Its been hard to find one for less than $20,000 at a dealership, I got my dually for $7,000 because the previous owner didnt know how to do the work and couldnt afford a shop to do it. I bought the truck to run my Landscaping business, and I dont even notice the trailer behind me… I have a feeling this truck is going to be in my stable for YEARS to come, I love this damn thing.

One thing I love about the lb7 duramax is how affordable they are compared to the lbz, I do prefer the lbz but they usually have price tag of 25k. Are lb7 used to get 28mpg on highway after we changed the engine, witch had the recalled bosh injectors on it. Great video by the way I've just learned something new. 🙂

Are you wondering about the mpg? if so then one big thing was doing wheel bearings. We gained 2mpg per wheel, we also had a aftermarket exhaust. Traveling at 120km (74mph) seemed to be the sweet spot, it was were the truck got peak mileage. Plus it had the recalled injectors on it. I remember before with the old injectors and the shitty wheel bearings we were getting 16mpg.

Had been wanting a Duramax since they first came out but had to wait a long while to be in my price range. Picked up my LB7 about 2.5 years ago with 221k on it. One owner/grandpa truck and I love it. Did the preventative maintenance on it (lift pump, rebuilt front end parts, etc) and it's been extremely reliable, had a water in fuel light come on and off a few weeks ago but traced the wire down and it was grounding out, of course that was after replacing all the fuel filters, WIF sensor/connector. Don't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon.

Fortunately, the truck has been well taken care of and at this time rums, and looks fantastic. I am fixing to order a transfer fix kit to address the possible rub issue. And I'm looking to order a 165 Air Dog lift pump to hopefully give me some time before I have to replace costly injectors. Ive since installed an Airdog 150, up pipes, down pipe, 4in MSRP straight pipe, volant cold air intake, HSP traction bars, as well as fixed a few things that it needed. My first and only diesel truck I own is a 2004 lb7 duramax Silverado HD I traded my 2015 Durango straight across. Knowing that the truck had blown head gasket. There’s a few things u don’t mention like for one injectors are not like spark plugs u don’t change them once a year two the fact that the fuel runs in side the motor warming the fuel more so than it would be if it were out in the open easy to n cooled, actually allows for better burn the hotter the fuel is the better it will ignite less fuel waste potential for better fuel mileage as well
