As a mechanic on diesel engines for 47yrs. I noticed that these guys don't protect their skin from oil and diesel which is known in the industry to cause skin cancer and dermatitis. Should be wearing latex gloves or barrier cream. I was wearing gloves past 30 years. Love this content it's addictive.😊
Dave's engines are much better built than any new engine from the OEMs. They don't do many of the assembly checks Dave's crew is doing. His rebuilding is more like a high end race shop. That's got to translate into more reliability.
I've only worked on my own gasoline engines but Dave and the boys seem like they are upper echelon mechanics. I know nothing about diesel engines and I watch each of these videos completely enthralled. They explain things so well and this video was like mechanic ASMR during the build with music portion. I love this channel. Great work fellas
@Ronzer Exactly the same for me. I have never owned, let alone worked on, any type of diesel vehicle. However, I just love watching these videos from these guys. I agree with your assessment of them being the definite upper echelons of mechanics. I mean just watch Joey do his thing… It's like a fine dance. Never misses a beat and it looks like it's choreographed. All of them, but I'm just using Joey as an example because I would guess that he is the head guy. Absolutely love watching these videos.
I know they’re there to earn a living foremost, but man you can tell they have so much pride in their work. It’s so great they share it with all of us.
Hats of to all of you guys. That engine is so clean that persons hand are not even getting that dirty, Greetings from Albania and all the best on what you guys are doing You guys are awesome
I bet Dave’s auto is a really fun place to work. The techs have the tools, the equipment location and support to turn out a really quality product. Reminds me of a factory authorized Rolex repair station, only with heavier stuff.
1:02 Had me cringing soo hard. we take for granted our safety. the sling on the corner there could slip, sending the load down. also he's under a suspended load. any industry i've been in is instant dismissal. I'm sure if you read this dave you'll have him change his way of thinking. get it on a heavy duty stand with a crank rotation and do it properly.
You can tell that Joey also takes after his dad with his attention to detail. While talking, Dave touches Joey's freshly rebuilt engine with the tip of his finger, leaving a tiny grease spot. At 16:11, Joey then notices said grease spot and immediately grabs the nearest shop rag & wipes the engine clean, lol. Great stuff
I have never, nor will i ever build an engine. But i find your videos like this intriguing and very relaxing...something zen like watching highly skilled craftsmen in their flow.
Daves shop is the place where you take a truck with an engine problem & know not think KNOW, you can trust their word on what to do & what it'll run you. that piece of mind is priceless imho. Most of us watching have 28hrs of work we need to finish in the next 24 & still manage to sleep. Heck its Saturday at 3pm & i've been up for almost 12hrs & just now sat down to eat a bit before i head out to do more work.
Dave and Guys: these are great to watch. Melted piston is hideous, but far less cost than a gas turbine (jet engine) with a failed and melted high pressure compressor (literally mega bucks to repair). My old saying: "I love hard work, I could watch it all day long". However, I earned my retirement the old fashioned way, worked my butt off. Keep it up guys, enjoy your day!
I have a 2019 Chevrolet 2500 HD. Only 21,000 miles myself on the Duramax. I always do my scheduled maintenance on it. Even did all the fluids from front to back at the 5 year mark. Wow, $$$$. But I want it to last forever. If I ever need a new motor, it’s going to come from you. I want the best of the best.
Perfection , PLUS , at its best 👌👍. Man this is " good " to watch . The tools and equipment , and above all the team you have using the " tools and equipment " - Awesome .
One thing i highly aplreciate joey does is proper lubricating of fresh builds. I cant tell you how many people i know that will build a motor and put a drop of oil on a bearing and not even spread it out when they assemble a motor; or, not even lubricate the cylinders/valvetrain. Like tell me you couldnt care less without telling me, when you cant even do that. Its just the little things honestly that go a long way.
If I was having an engine rebuilt, Monster engines would be the top of my list. You can tell they know what they are doing! Watching that engine come together is amazing.
If I were a much younger mechanic I’d be doing everything I could to be aloud to work in you shop, the quality of the work you guys do and the professionalism there is incredible and mostly a thing of the past, when you talk to your customers you give them honesty and the integrity of your entire shop, keep up the great work and keep sharing it with us all.
Top Notch professional motor services! Very professional and organized! I wished I could get my 5.3 Chevy motor with 308k on it overhauled by you guys. Don’t think it would make the trip that far.😂
I'd like to play with one of these engines. Possibly CNC the crank and rods removing all extra material. To lighten it up as much as practical. Polish the rods removing any stress risers , but the crazy, crazy part is fitting sparkplugs and a magneto. A long with a custom intake manifold with injectors. Lots of injectors at least 2 per cylinder. Likely 3 per cylinder. Run it on methanol with a pair of compound turbos. 1.75" primary turbo headers, polish the exhaust ports streamline the intake ports. And a custom grind cam. Three 1500cc injectors per cylinder may not be enough if nitro is added! Only 50-60% add ARP studs , I have always wondered if nitro can be sprayed like nitrous with additional oxygen, maybe have two fuel rails. Have the nitro only at full throttle. I'm thinking the diesel block and crank can easily handle the power, just keep it under 6k-6500 rpm. Especially with things lightened and balanced within 0.5 grams. It should easily handle the 2000-2500 HP plus keep up the awesome 🎉 have a great day👍✌️
@@brandonedgley3131 just tell the wife it blew up...drop the truck off and tell them what you want. Only live once! Maybe a short life though if the wife finds out...LOL

What a fantastic video and a fantastic rebuild!!!!! God I love these videos. The only problem I see, and it's for US CONSUMERS/CUSTOMERS, not a problem for Dave or his business, is that since following Dave and the entire crew and the work they do, I would never ever ever want another person to touch my stuff. 🤣🤣🙏🙏 But I'm being serious. I know that there are tens of thousands of very talented mechanics out there, but the thoroughness of what these guys do combined with the equipment that they have, I just feel like they go quite a few steps above what the average wham-bam, get it out the door and down the road mechanic is going to do!!!! It's really too bad that doing things properly costs so much money. It makes sense though. Between the talent, the number of hours of labor, the equipment and the thoroughness… It has to be expensive. There's no way that it can't be. And that's why doing things the correct way cost big money… You get what you pay for. I don't see the average shop out there measuring every bore spec, cleaning every part and checking every clearance for all steps of the build like Dave does. I just don't see it. You can't compare an oil change/tire shop with a full-fledged machine shop. And that's why I would never want anybody else to ever touch my stuff again after seeing these guys. Put me in a real dilemma… 🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
With the expense of trucks now days and how bad people are with oil changes Dave is in no danger of ever running out of work! I am going to have them build me a new 4.8l for my mint 2003 Silverado I purchased from an elderly guy that kept it garaged, but he did drive it a lot and its got 200k on the odometer. He also drove it a long time with low oil pressure as it had the flattened Oil Pick Up Tube O-Ring issue. I am concerned it may have damaged it, but its running well enough to get me by until I need to do the project. I am saving up enough cash to do the engine and transmission at the same time and replacing all of the outer engine parts all new ignition coils (OEM) Water Pump, Alternator, etc. Having the front end rebuilt as well. Just watching all the problems people are having with all brands right now and the super high cost of new trucks I really think this is the way to go. The older trucks were super reliable and lasted 20 years no sweat. Already got about 6k saved up and set a side for the project as I do not like going in debt. Soon as I hit 12k that 2003 will be better than it was brand new! Yes I could easily do it now with a Jasper engine, but have you looked at the reviews as of late with Jasper? I want an engine as good as a new GM Crate since GM no longer makes the 4.8l Crate for those years.
I think you have a good plan that will save you money on the long run. I seem to have a couple of hundred every month in my retirement and I attribute it to keeping my 2003 7.3 Super Duty with almost 300,000 miles going.
I'm ordering an lbz long block next year, I'm hoping there is a video from daves comparing a Speed of Air engine to a stock reman, dyno sheets to fuel consumption, a torture test would be a cool bonus but would probably be a waste of time and effort, there would be enough money in the youtube video to pay for the engines themselves, I feel like there is enough demand. I'd really like to see some data before I drop 15k on an engine when I have the option to spend less than half that.
God I love a good solid build, not a rebuild guy to any degree honestly stay away from it lol but mad respect to the guys that do it. Rebuilt my share of motors over the years mostly small engine water craft engines and I hated every second of it😂😂 they ran and chugged a long till they got sold to some out of town guy. I really want to see one of these HP Diesels that you build on the Dyno. I want to see the improvements that gapless rings and Speed of Air Pistons make. For real world driving you should perform a test like TFL does on the Ike Gauntlet. I like seeing engines being built but I also like results, I need results. It's only going to help the business.
I'm curious what compound he was putting on the friction surface between the head bolt nuts and where they meet the head surface? I was always told to not put any anti-seize or similar on friction surfaces because it can throw off an applied torque. Have I been misinformed? Thanks for all your videos by the way, love watching them. Nice place you have out there!
In my earlier days as a mechanic i rebuilt a duramax that had a melted piston. Only replacing the one piston. Wouldn’t do it again but the truck is still running strong to this day. Its my brothers truck and he was on a tight budget. I explained to him the possibilities and he said to only do the one piston.
5:50 I love how on todays melted duranax piston video, the piston damage wasn't done by the "leaking turbo seals" but what we know is the actual problem of the broken\damaged injector over spraying fuel into the hole and burning it up! Dave I don't doubt much of anything you say cause you know what you're doing well and have many decades of experience. But that previous video on this engine stated this melted piston damage was done by a turbo that had blown its seal and was sending oil into the engine causing this damage, which isn't the case. If that was the cause it would be all 8 pistons that got hot and damaged, not just one. The only thing that causes one cylinder to get too hot is too much fuel being dumped into it from bad injector like I said last video. I love to see you building the engine using @SOA dimpled pistons & I'm sure gapless @TotalSeal rings too. I wish we could see a side by side dyno, etc comparison between this and a regularly buit version? Anyways keep up the good work we'll be here waiting & warching!👌🏻👍🏻🛠️🔧🔩🛢️🦺 ✊🏻🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸✊🏻
I thought it was a stuck open injector at first too. Question, why would the turbo seal only have taken out only one cylinder? Wouldn't they have all looked bad? Great video! You guys do great work!
