Had a 2006 Grand Caravan SXT that had electrical gremlins. Ate 7 starters, an alternator, smoked the EGR controller, etc. Finally realized it was a Chrysler issue as wiring harnesses on their vehicles up to 2011 were prone to failure due not being grounded well. Usually ended in PCM system failure which requires dealer for new one reprogramming.

@@PistonShack we finally traded it off, sadly. After the wiring harness issue was realized too late when replaced the alternator, the damage to the PCM was too far gone. Did put a total of almost 100,000 miles on that 2006, which was burning oil amongst other things (resolved with Valvoline MaxLife synthetic blend). We bought it used at 86,000 and traded it off at roughly 188,000 miles, with lights lit up on the dashboard left & right due to PCM system issues.
Ended up trading for a newer 2015 Grand Caravan SXT instead, which only has had one issue being poorly designed calipers on the rear wheels from Chrysler. Mechanically the 2015 being used too, hasn't missed a beat or had any electrical or mechanical issues with oil either. At 170,000+ miles and may trade it off, but it runs decent with an average 24mpg and only brakes being major issue. 🤞

thanks for making this in-depth test for us. i am currently experiencing issues and it may be the alternator. hopefully a local place has the tools i'll need to swap out the alternator. thanks!

It's getting too complicated for me. Not too long ago, if it didn't charge, you just rebuilt the alternator (Diodes, stator, rectifier, maybe bearings ?)

That's sometimes better way fixing faulty component instead replacing entire unit but putting new alternator will be easy for most of us)

I don't think, this old alternator will last long time. Seems like it's on a way out as well.
