I owned a 2019 Colorado ZR2 V6 it was a great truck, but in 23/24 when Chevy, Toyota, and Ford started coming out with the new updated mid-size 4x4 trucks I started looking. Narrowed it down to a 2024 Colorado ZR2 or a 2024 Ranger Raptor, the new Taco's did nothing for me. So first I test drove the ZR2 and after the test drive sat down with the salesman and we started talking price. Then immediately they start their game with me and tell me that want to charge me 3k more for BS dealership fees and special protective coating on the exterior paint and interior seats and that is non-negotiable at their dealership??? Also, I had showed the salesman that I had a written offer from Carmax to buy my 2019 Colorado ZR2 V6 from me for 35k, and the salesman initially said that we should be able to match that. Then more dealership games he comes back to me after talking to the guy that runs their used car dept. and also the dealership sales manager and he tells me unfortunately we can only give you 30k for your ZR2 because we need to put new tires and brakes on it to sell it, (note my ZR2 was in mint condition with only 14k miles on it) WTF??? Next, I got up and said let me think about this for a couple of days and I will get back to you, and I walked out. Next, I went and test drove a new Ranger Raptor bought the RR right after the test drive. Honestly no regrets the RR is so much fun to drive and it is wicked quick and fast, and it sounds so Bitchin when you floor it in Baja exhaust mode, love it. All the new mid-size 4x4 trucks are good trucks, and all of them have their Pros and Cons, you just have to go for the one that you like best and it works best for your needs.✌

Very well said and appreciate you giving the details of your purchase experience you had. Some dealers are just bad apples. 5k loss to upgrade tires and brakes on a 14k mile truck...laughable. that dealer was scum

I've owned a bunch over the years, from some of the station wagons my parents had in the '60's to my '68 440 R/T and '69 big block Chargers, to both my Dakota trucks in the '00's, etc. THE most reliable car I've ever had by far was my 2010 V6 AWD RAV4 that I put 212k miles on since I bought it in Dec '09....aaand was recently destroyed by a drunk driver. So I had originally wanted a new Tacoma based on that reliability....but Toyota dropped the ball...AGAIN, and still didn't put a front locker in them. Then there's the fact that a similarly equipped TuRD Pro would be, what, $10k MORE than the '24 Colorado ZR2 I picked up? That was a nope. I originally wanted a Gladiator, but after driving one (steering sucks and that's BEFORE the "Death Wobble"), and pricing the diesel at around $70k, and seeing the reliability, I decided on the ZR2.

This is one of the reasons why Subaru puts the intercooler on top of their engines. Not that you can really do that in a non boxer engine setup but I personally don't like turbos on rigs that go in the mud. It's asking for problems IMO. Keep the Gladiator for your purposes.

Guffmiester off-road has a TH-cam channel with a new model 2023 COLORADO ZR2 and he has many videos of him wheeling through the FLORIDA EVERGLADES with water over the tires as well as mudd. He did have concerns at first with the rear diff breather but I think that problem got remedied by him. That front issue with the air levers would give me concern. I myself have a 2018 Colorado ZR2 that I’ve wheeled all over Alabama so I know what you mean about the mudd but my truck has been a absolute great truck and having owned many 4x4 trucks in my day can truly say that the ZR2 has been the most capable OFF-ROADER that I’ve ever owned, the front and rear LOCKERS in these trucks are game changers and in my opinion the truck is far better than the TACOMA but please don’t tell TACO owners that they will yell from HELL TO SUNDAY. I’ve added a few engine mods to mine MALLET FULL EXQUAST, TRIFECTA TUNE so I’m pushing a few more horses and the 3.42 gearing has never been a issue pushing 33 inch tires

@timricks1149 greatly appreciated this comment. Hearing the 3.42s still work great in the mud with lockers on is good Info that I needed to hear. Jason, Valid concerns. I think the hardest to alleviate are front hole for radiator scooping and packing mud and the robustness of the IFS when hitting holes. For the IFS I don’t see a solution.
For the hole upfront, maybe a brush guard that you would need anyway with a tall enough plate on it that pushes most of the mud away from the radiator opening. Not perfect but I don’t see any other way.
For the DSSV shocks, I would remove them BEFORE you first take them to the woods after you took it over. I would immediately replace them with Bilsten shocks. Inexpensive if they go bad and before trading the truck I would put the original Tina-used-only DSSV shocks back so value stays with the truck and you don’t have to spend $2,500 on a set of shocks. If you destroy shocks they will be the cheaper Bilsteins for your purposes.
Crawl and gear ratio, when stuck use the portable winch and a Pull Pal to dig/pull yourself out backwards.
OR TO AVOID ALL THIS BS
RAM 2500 with Power Wagon package. Around $53k with discounts and all this BS solved. I might not be the most unbiased though. 😃

I think what's needed (if your wife is ok with it), is a side-by-side comparison video of the 2 in the same conditions, to see which works better, and if the problems you think the ZR2 might have, really DOES have, or if there's any that you didn't think of, that it DOES end up having. To be honest, I think there would be an easy solution to the "mud scoop" problem in the front, in replacing the skidplate with a different one, or simply making something of a "snorkel" that can be easily attached and detached when mudding.

I was trapped 4 times and had to crawl out the passenger side! So they fixed this but not the problem I have with the front suspension. Any speed bump or dip taken faster than 15 miles per hour and you can hear and feel a loud clank at the front left side. Does not sound normal! The dealer had the head mechanic check this out and everyone in the service department said that this is normal because the bump stops are metal on metal! What? This doesn’t make sense and I’ve seen other people complain on Reddit about this noise / issue but I don’t know of a solution? Is this info correct? Just take the axles and transfer case off the gladiator and haul them in the back of the ZR2 to your hunting spot and then slap them on the zR2 before you Offroad and take them back off once your done. Your deff talking yourself out of this truck, this ZR2 IMO will do everything your jeep will with a very few exceptions. The ZR2 will be fine in the mud. I live in Alabama, and know mud, lived in Florida aswell, every state has a different mud, but the mud you hit while hunting will not be like your describing, what your talking about is mud bog territory. I’ve went through some nasty stuff on bald tires, in a 93 pathfinder in 4high.. if your concerned, have your wife follow you to where ever these mud holes are and try to make it, with your gladiator on standby. Buy a real bumper, not a brush guard. What was the reason you bought a 50k ZR2? You’re clearly biased to a jeep. Just go buy a jeep, since you’re worried and concerned. The breathers is a very good point, most “offroad” vehicles skimp on this, and aren’t properly located away from the area. The hood is another good point, and yes it looks good but it sucks because the manufacturer blocks ALOT of your view from the drivers seat. Have a good day, try the ZR2 out before you worry yourself out of a vehicle.

Not sure how the new ones (like yours) are since nobody has really tried them, but they should be just as good or better than the previous gen. I love off-roading and I’m not a fan of Chevy, but want a ZR2 Colorado, particularly the bison but only for the few added accessories they have, i don’t care about a few things that come on them, as they would be replaced anyways (bumpers). Obviously you know the hazards in your area very well, and it may be that the ZR2 is NOT the best truck for your WORK. Maybe a Ram RHO or similar? Out here in the Southwest we don't have the kind of nasty mud you have that destroys everything. Although, if you're caught in or right after a flood in, say, Moab, where the red clay is, it can get really bad. For me, it'll see hardpack, sand, loose dirt, the occasional mud, and snow. Plus I really don't think I'd go wheeling where it was really muddy like that. So, while it may not be the best work truck for you, it's pretty much the perfect toy for me. Best of luck!
