When I am creating a natural terrain base, I like to make a slurry of wall filler, sands in different grits, and craft paint. Much cheaper than hobby basing paints, and you don't need to prime it.

I have an army of Dwarfs to base, the entire scheme is cobblestones and flagstones. I use parts of sprues to base them and home made texture paint.
Here is how I make texture paint:
    Tea spoon of fine sand
    TS of Baking Soda
    TS of white glue
    TS of white paint

Good tips. Basing has become pretty therapeutic.

Good luck with these 30 years old Warhammer Fantasy Chestnuts . When I've seen all mould lines there I had amazing journey back to late 90s and early 00( even decided to play some old school punk from cassette player 😂) . Person who sends them for ,, commission,, painting definitely know what is doing, gonna save some money on anxiety and anti -depresant tablets . Again,Good Luck !

For wood textures, especially on balsam or Styrofoam, using a wire brush will create a very natural looking wood grain on a good scale and it's harder to mess up than using a hobby knife.

For 40k bases (or kitbashing) look for drywall hole patches at the hardware store; the center area is a very fine metal mesh that is a great approximation for expanded metal

6:35 You could add indents to the soft clay to help with the bobbles staying in place for the glueing … still too much faff though

I've never done bases before, but want to try them, what materials you can recommend? I mean I've seen Vallejo and AK Interactive offer some "muds", which one is better for a start? Or the only thing which matters is price?

Should I be worried about how high my platform base might make a model? I dont play 40k yet but I want to make sure Im not shooting myself in the foot when it comes to hiding behind barriers

Hiding behind barriers is one of two issues with a tall bases (the other being that they can be less stable). Personally I find it worth it to make my special characters a bit taller. If adding 3-4 mm to the base is actually enough to put that character in line of sight, then you know people would have already been arguing about that anyway.

Nice bases but I wouldn't advice air drying clay, I did half of my army with das and the bases keep on breaking every damn time, I fixed my minis to the bases like three times each

Are you not pinning your minis down through the clay and into the base?

@branlee2649 nope, i just bought a hand drill. Never needed it

Hey this is a good better basing 101 vid, getting people to think about creating interest with height variation and compelling but not overwhelming component features. This is the basis of bases creating a narrative as a mini diorama/vignette that ties with the model. Also just realized I've been watching and hadn't subscribed already.
