Quick explanation from a former synchronized swimmer: we do this for competitions. Yes I know it’s horrible and there “has to be a better way” but this is how it’s done. You mix knox gelatin with water and use a rubber barbecue brush to lather on a huge layer so it hardens like a swim cap and your hair stays in place. I remember after swimming my team and I would each have brought one bottle of conditioner each just for that post swim shower to take off the gelatin from our hair. Oh and also it stinks like wet dog and drips down your body and re-dries and pulls all your peach fuzz. It’s gross 🤡 Edit: we don’t use swim caps for competitions because it looks more uniform to just have a bun cap and gelled scalp. Synchro performances are all about the aesthetics and also swim caps can fall off! That’s the last thing you want during your routine (judges take points off for everything)
As a former synchronized swimmer, it smells like dead whale, but the best way to get it off is scrubbing half a lemon on your scalp (or where your scalp's supposed to be).
as a synchronized swimmer, i can say that she is indeed going to have trouble getting that out but lots of hot water and conditioner should get the job done
This is giving me flashbacks to having to speed wash my hair bcs I swam like 13th out of 17 and awards were after that event and I needed to look professional. Ah competition season. I love it and hate it.
As a person who has done synchro (or artistic swimming) for 19yrs, the best way to get gel off is to soak your head in hot water for about 15min, then do a double shampoo and 1-3 conditioners
As a synchronized swimmer, I can confirm this. It’s a pain to get off (usually takes about an hour in the shower to get off) and it smells so bad. But it’s all worth it in the end when you watch your routine and the whole look just pulls together
This is used for Synchronized Swimming or as of the 2020 Olympics, Artistic Swimming. Artistic swimmers use Knox gelatin to slick back their hair. (I think this is what she is using.) It should come off if you melt it off in the shower 😅 Usually people don’t also put gel on the bun, it makes it harder to get out. This comes from an Artistic Swimmer, hope this helps!
Artistic swimming?!😂 who still watches the Olympics anymore? My family and I used to watch it back in the day 80s and 90s. I'll always call it synchronized swimming. I also thought at some point that it was called water ballet too?
@ddeonu nooo bc me too. it def helps a lot to watch different techniques and I also just like observing what other swimmers might need to work on to improve
As a synchronize swimmer, it feels awful to use these products on our hair but it does help the hair stay up all the time so we can preform with no problem. Getting it off is also one big mission which at times can hurt very badly but it’s basically the only way. 💀😭
I used to swim synchro! This actually isn’t bad for your hair. If you take it off gently to avoid breakage, the collagen in the gelatin makes your hair shiny and strong 💪🏻
Coming from a competitive swimmer, only synchronize swimmers do that to their hair. Don’t do this to yourself if you’re a competitive swimmer. Sure your hair is exposed to the chlorine but it is only for short intervals(unless in practice) and there are really good products out their to help protect your hair. But then there are the ones (like me) who have the toughest hair imaginable that is completely fine after an simple shower. I give props for the synchronized swimmers who do or did this. (But it also does look pretty cool)
I’m also a competitive swimmer and I have about 10 caps. Each of them are tight so nothing falls off. Yes, I do get chlorine in my hair so I use a shampoo that is mainly used to wash chlorine out.
Synchronised swimmer here, PLEASE DONT BRUSH IT OUT, THAT WILL DAMAGE YOUR HAIR, to get it out soak yourself in a hot tub for about 1-2 hours and brush your hair underwater gently, make sure you comb through your hair as well (with your fingers but you can use whatever) to extract every piece
This is for synchronized swimmers, not competitive swimmers. Competitive swimmers simply use a swim cap. Because the overall objectives of both sports are different, they need different ways to keep their hair out of their face. Both are pretty active though, so this is very necessary!!
As a synchronized swimmer: Use water, and it should feel like jello, so just pull it off. If that doesn’t work, use pineapple juice, or apple cider vinegar. The acidity will help it come off.
@@maevereynolds6344 its going to be a lot colder in pool water during a competition and while doing a routine you’re not rubbing your hands through/around your hair like you would in a warm/hot shower. The gelatin dissolves more easily in hot water than cold, think of trying to dissolve a gummy bear in cold water without stirring versus hot water with stirring
I'm a synchronized swimmer. Yes, I do this for meets. The quick way to get the Knox out is to use lots of shampoo and conditioner. It's also kinda fun to peel the Knox of your skin. It's a stress coping mechanism for me and my team. 😊 Yes people have tried other things, but they don't work as well, sorry if I offended anyone
