This is so cool, it made me think of the construction process of Dr Martin air walk boots. They have a welt (same material as the sole) that is stitched to the upper in a protective channel. They then heat weld the sole to the welt on the upper using a special machine. I think this could be done with soldering iron… I have changed the tip of my soldering iron for different jobs so maybe like a flat-ish block that you move the shoe round heating and welding. Thank you for sharing your great ideas. 😊
Hey, for something in between a soldering iron and a clothes iron, what about either a historic soldering iron (like a copper chisel on a stick you heat with a torch), or a (crosscountry) ski-waxing iron (a flat block of metal on a handle with rounded edges that you also heat with a torch). ... sigh, just googled to see and that sort is now apparently only "vintage" or "antique" rather than the basic/cheap I was used to. Alas.
A paused project for now, but I'd love to hear updates if you ever get back to it! An odd thought, but would a hot glue gun maybe be a good amount of heat for sticking the soles together? Either empty and just using it similar to the soldering iron, or maybe figuring out a way to use the filament in place of the glue?
Thanks! Definitely planning to revisit this, especially now that I'm exiting Don't Even Consider Wearing Anything But Boots Season. I very briefly played around with the glue gun a little at some point and (IIRC, though it's been a while) the nozzle on my tester didn't get hot enough for this filament but it's probably worth another look.

Hm, a patchworkiron might be the right fit, also not expensive...
Oooh I'll look into that, thanks for the tip!
