- Steely Dan's Royal Scam album highlights everything that is great about Bernard Purdie's drumming. His feel of course can't be denied, but also his creative fills and approach to the construction of a song. There are little intricate things that he changes throughout the song to keep each section interesting and elevated from the previous one, such as his ghost notes and hi hat openings. His fills act like phrases in sentences that connect the dots between each section. I LOVE the fill that he plays before the last chorus coming out of the solo section. The slight pause on beat 3 is like a comma in the middle of the sentence that works so well to not only bridge both phrases but create a lift going into the chorus. This tempo made it a fun challenge to play as well. Enjoy!

Finally the right one. It took awhile to get here. Well done. I just saw a video where it’s just the album tracks with drums, bass, and vocals isolated. Very cool.
I searched up a drum cover to this song just because of that open high hat hit during the chorus (believe 3rd offbeat of the 4th measure). I don't even play drums but every time I hear this song I can't help but play air drums to that part, it sounds so cool
Can I just say as a massive SD fan and fellow drummer, this is TAsTEty!
Thanks!
Awesome Tate, I just finished playing the entire Royal Scam album! Bernard's play is amazing. You really nailed this one! Nice work Tate!
Thanks Earl! I'll have to go through and check out your takes on the album. I think I only have 3 left to do? The two Marotta tunes and the title track...
bro had that stank face going, cant blame him
I’m not a drummer, but I love to watch and hear good playing. That’s such a nice sound you’re making with the high-hat.
Thanks Walter!
