  • If you live in the U.S., you probably know someone who's on food stamps, aka SNAP. In fact, 46.5 million people use SNAP to get by. And not all of them are who you'd expect.

      She's talking about vanilla extract. It's normal that roomates share basic kitchen stuff, that doesn't mean she feeds all of them. Maybe she just used it up and now it's her turn to repurchase it.

    I’m on food stamps, as I have a chronic illness and not able to work. It helps me TREMENDOUSLY. And I’m able to get by just fine on what I’m given, and am so thankful that our country has these programs for people who need it.

    I find the comments really interesting. Most people seem really supportive of this white young woman who is able to work in a higher paying job (which she admits) and gets food stamps to buy healthier food than she would otherwise be able to afford. I am fine with this btw. However, I have seen similar programs with very poor, unskilled, black women and it's nothing but poverty shaming. Interesting indeed.

    • @derekah.3359
      @derekah.3359 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +Sassafraster I thought i was the only person that saw that... It's okay for this white young woman to need government assistance but not okay for black women. She has a job and there are black women that get food stamps that have jobs too.... But they are wrong and in this young lady's case this is okay. When you go to other vids about blacks being on food stamps, you see the comments and they are horrendous, but not in the case of this girl's story.

    • @derekah.3359
      @derekah.3359 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Living Well With TJ How about instead of race baiting people stop being hateful to one another period? Stop singling out a certain group of people and making fun of others but exempting others from scrutiny? I just came from a vid, where there were whites and black making fun of black women on food stamps and saying evil comments. Sassafraster did not say anything derrogatory, she didnt make fun of this female in the vid and she also did not curse about her or call her names. But with these comments on this video, this white young lady is not recieving much back-lash... I dont think anyone should mock anyone's situation. No offence, if you cant seem to see the differences or the variations in the comments and the obvious ignorant way of thinking a lot of people clearly identify they have, then i feel sorry for you, this world is so not sugar coated.

      You don't want her to buy goat cheese then have your legislator make it a requirement that you can't buy it. SNAP already does not allow you to use money on alcohol, cigarettes, and paper products which makes sense. However you are giving someone x amount of dollars per week to buy food as they see fit and not to have you legislate what they can or can't eat outside of a few vice requirements.

    When will people realize that AmeriCorps is NOT "work" in the traditional sense?? It is PUBLIC SERVICE, aka VOLUNTEERING, which means you get a "stipend." There is NO salary, NO wage in the traditional sense. You ARE meant to live in poverty, because the mission of AmeriCorps is to eliminate poverty, and one method of preparing those who serve to help achieve that goal is to have that poverty like experience. You want a higher pay? Work retail, fast food, whatever pays minimum wage. You'll be making a lot more than serving with AmeriCorps. Not bashing on Americorps, I'm bashing on this video's lame attempt to garner my sympathy. People CHOOSE to dedicate a year of their life to AmeriCorps.

      +Chris M Thank you for stating this! I can't believe they are trying to present this as something it's not. I am an AmeriCorps alumni. When I served (about 15 years ago), we received $700 a month, and there was a stipulation that we could NOT receive food stamps (I guess they have since changed that rule). We also received free health insurance--I didn't pay a dime for anything health-related, which is a luxury the people I served didn't have. Anyhoo, yes. This program is designed to place volunteers into the poverty level of the people they serve. How could AJ not research this well enough to know WTF it actually is? Journalism = infotainment these days.

      She is sticking with a job that requires the taxpayers to supplement her income because she wants to "help" people. Here's an idea, you could help the people of California by getting a better job and not having to take their food stamp taxes?
      This is the mindset of so many millennial today. They are blind to how they are hurting people, and they zoom in 100x on the area of their life where they perceive to be "helping" others.
      Lol. California sounds like a cesspool of non-contributors and people in love with their "intentions" while totally ignorant of their actions.

    • @nukethenarrative5873
      @nukethenarrative5873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You stay at home with your parents (or get friends together to share rent on a property) and save money. You get a job that pays the best you can find and you learn to do that job well. You make yourself valuable to the organization you work for. You avoid like the plague any co workers that spend their free time talking trash about people that are working harder than they are. You make contacts in your industry (this is not hard, because you are a hard working and you are learning a lot) and eventually you will find opportunities to move up. You pay down debt and do not go into debt for things that will not create an income. You stop buying $5 coffees at Starbucks (ever!).
      The truth is, it's NOT easy. It's even harder today than it was last decade, or the decade before...
      But you have to work the plan.
      The problem with life is that it can take years and years to build a life that is really working. On top of that, sometimes you can't tell if your life is working for years and years. This means that you can live for years and years before you finally admit that your life isn't working, and at that point it can still take years and years to catch up to where you want to be (if that is even possible).
      The best advice for a girl like the one in the video would be this...
      Work on yourself. Make yourself pleasant. Reject all hatred for people that are not the same political beliefs as you. Learn to cook. Learn to bake. Keep your house/room clean and tidy. Work hard. Learn to get over disappointment. Learn how to disagree without being argumentative. Do all those things and hopefully you will meet a man who has a high enough income to help make up for your financial shortcomings. That is the best piece of advice. But "feminism" has ensured that advice like that can't be given without calling the grantor and bigot or chauvinist.

    • @mrmrso228
      @mrmrso228 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miryam Osorio Let's try to explain this in simple English. There are needs and wants. Needs are the basic necessities of everyday living - shelter, electricity, indoor plumbing, food, clothing. Everything else is a want. In order to get those needs, one has to work for them.
      $6 cheese isn't a necessity, it's a want. Just like cable TV, manicures and vacations aren't necessities but rather wants. One isn't going to die without $6 cheese. When one is on public assistance, it means they do not make enough money to support themselves and therefore they need the help of the govt/taxpayers.
      My problem with someone on welfare, even if they work, is their priorities. My husband and I make a decent salary but guess what - I use coupons for just about everything from food to clothing to household supplies. I budget our money. Doesn't mean we don't splurge on this things - we do, but we're also not on welfare. If we were on welfare, for whatever reason, splurges such as my monthly manicures would go right out the window as it's not a necessity in order to survive.
      I suppose I see things very differently than what a lot of others do.

    • @Batmo21
      @Batmo21 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, i think you see it exactly the same as a lot of people commenting on this video. That is way i asked for someone to explain this to me. It shouldn't be about the stupid 6 dollar cheese. Why get angry about 6 dollars? Its unbelievable how 6 dollars is so much
      (when the minimum wage in California is 9.50) thats more than half of their hourly income. The point of this is that i can't see how you people can get angry at this person for having an education, getting a job she loves and than that job falling short... dont you think everyone should be able to do more than just survive? How sick is that?

Never turned on my heater during winter or used my oven to keep my power bill very low. Everything was microwaved, cereal, or sandwiches. I did all this on one job. I am in much better shape now. But, most of my adult life I've worked two jobs and at one time I worked four to keep our family's head above water. This is an interesting trend that in millennials. My 24 year old sons best friend, who is 25, works part time because he doesn't have the desire to work full time and applied for food stamps. I don't understand two things: 1) where motivation has gone, 2) how this is possible in this system, and, another, 3) why younger people feel it is ok to burden the already saturated system when they could work more and over their expenses. I have to admit that when her expenses were listed and she had $180 left after said expenses. After my husband and I pay our bills every month, and I mean basic expenses with no grand lifestyle, great cars, or yearly vacations, we don't even have $180 left. And no, I'm not complaining or whining, just perplexed. What a broken system!

    I'm so sick of people being on food stamps because they can, not because they need it. This girl would be fine without food stamps. She may have to hit Dad up for another $50 once in a while, but she wouldn't miss any meals. Food aid is for people who have no other options. She is choosing to work at a job that pays crappy because she finds it more fulfilling than other work. I shouldn't have to pay for her indulgent life choices, and I surely don't want to pay for her goat cheese. A white girl with a degree from Duke, probably from an upper middle-class family, has no business using food aid programs.

    • @purewonka

      My point is that this particular young woman has choices. She chooses a path that doesn't earn her anywhere near her income potential (remember that degree from Duke), and then collects a benefit from the government because of the the low income job she chooses to work at. That's not why benefit programs exist. It's evidence of self-indulgence and entitlement - two of the personalty characteristics that are infecting the USA.

      It's fine to choose to live happy and poor, but don't do it on my dime. Food stamps are for the needy. They are for people who have to take any crappy minimum wage job just to survive. Food stamps are not for people who have a college degree from Duke who could easily get a decent job, but choose not to do so. If she wants to work for Americorps, but can't survive on her own, then she can ask her parents if she can move back home. If her own parents refuse to provide her with financial support, then why should the taxpayers? I support helping the needy, but not those who have options and simply choose to live in poverty.

    I am on snap due to a sudden life threatening illness, and I'll be honest, I do buy *some* organic.
    The cheapest grocery store around me sells a dozen cage free organic eggs, often for less than standard eggs..because the cage free are local
    I buy organic chicken and wild caught fresh fish. I also live in an area where fish is plentiful and usually pretty cheap. Like, at one point it was cheaper to purchase lobsters than it was to purchase ground beef, which worked out well for me since I can't eat any red meat. A pack of organic chicken can easily last me two weeks of meals.
    75% of my meals are vegetarian because, again, illness. I also shop at the farmers market a lot because they match your snap. You purchase $20 in tokens and get $40 total. With that I can afford to do my weekly shop AND help put money into the pockets of local farmers.

    Humm the bigger question is does she really need it...no. She can easily settle for a not "so lavish bent (WTH) did she say? lifestyle. My parents are foreigners that came to America in hopes for a better life. They have NEVER I repeat NEVER used Government assistance although they have STRUGGLED with money! The Lord has provided and blessed us enough to feed us and have our needs met. Mind that they have no degrees, just hard working FAB parents. Plus they don't speak the best English...

    • @Armaniwazhere
      @Armaniwazhere 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Tbh, your parents shouldn't even have the option of receiving American benefits. I understand that everyone needs help, but non-US citizens shouldn't be entitled to government assistance.

    • @osirisx238
      @osirisx238 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      In reality, everyone receives government assistance in one way or another. Did you go to public school, use public libraries, were there any local or federal agencies that helped your parents start a business? Did your parents get information from a government agency on where to take classes to prepare for the citizenship test?
      Furthermore, government assistance isn't a bad thing. Without the GI Bill my father never would have been able to get a college degree. Furthermore, the GI Bill has been one of the most successful social welfare programs in US history.

      +OsirisX238 yes my parents paid property tax so i could go to public school and library. yes i pay gas tax at pump and car registration fees and sales tax on cars i buy so i can drive on public roads. yes i pay sales tax at stores to pay for other public services used. yes i am paying federal income tax to pay back my federal pel grant from college. yes you are right everyone uses public services. and most people pay for those public services....just through more like a membership plan (taxes) than a gate fee ay the library door. though some roads are toll roads to cover cost of building just by people that use that road rather people that dont use it have to pay for it. same thing with some public libraries..... some of those are privatised, ran from card holder and/or sponsorship fees and not tax dollars. in fact bryant park in new york city is actually privately owned and operated. vendor fees, corporate sponsors, fundraisers and private trusts pay for it. and its a hell lot nicer and safer than when the city owned it. but the concept of some public services is good. but welfare and unemployement and food stamps is just putting an un needed burden on the public and is taking money from schools an fire and police to pay people to get lazy and refuse to work. i go through 200 people a year cause $15 an hour to mow lawns is too hard of work especially when they get $400 a week in welfare to sit at home in ac all day. end unemployment system and see how many new jobs are created then.

    • @SgtJoeSmith
      @SgtJoeSmith 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +OsirisX238 i have heard of straight guys doing gay porn cause they get paid 20 times as much. i guess when i was jobless and in that situation i never had a chance to think about it as an option and i didnt go apply for welfare either. i grabbed the push mower out of my moms garage and went around knocking on doors. now i turn down 3000 new mow customers every year cause people make too much living on welfare. my top guys get paid $1500 a week too.....after only 3 months of working here. but i need 50 more guys i can pay $1500 a week but i guess theres too many higher paying jobs around town.....or welfare pays them enough to get by and not work. or maybe cause cutting grass for a living is more degrading than gay porn so they go do gay porn instead.

    If your sacrifice is organic vs. regular food...wow! I've been watching videos with single mothers who are trying to survive on food stamps and a fast food job, and their sacrifice was frozen foods vs. fresh fruit/veggies (because they spoil too quickly). She has learned early on in age how to get over on the system. Duke University taught her a great economic lesson! Kudos!

I have a family of 4 and I was denied snap and the reason given was I made $100 a month too much. I made $30K a year at that time. This crap upsets me. She does not need it to survive. She is definitely not struggling. I went hungry many night so that my wife and children could have what they needed.

Just like all the " single moms" with their live in working boyfriends. Bullshit- I'm struggling now and would kill for a few hundred a month in groceries. Instead, I make a lot of sacrifices at the grocery store. I don't get everything I want/need and usually have to put stuff back.

      As someone who has applied for SNAP in the past, no they do not require that you include the information of other people that you're living with unless you want them on your food stamp case (so they can use your SNAP card to get groceries for you if you're sick or at work and unable to go to the store, for example). At least that's how it works in Virginia.

      @mattkennedy3474 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lonnie Mills you missed the point entirely. A young white college educated female receiving food stamps is a story. In all the other videos I’ve seen it’s normally some uneducated black chick with more mouths than she can afford to feed. Yes, people do chime in with such originals as “get a job” and so forth but it’s as common as a Jerry Springer episode.

    • @lonniemills9963
      @lonniemills9963 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matt Kennedy Lol they may say get a job, but also a lot of racial comment as well. So let's not pretend. I did not miss the point. You Proved me right by saying "uneducated black chick with more mouth than she can afford to feed". So if I was to use your logic being that this white girl is educated why the hell is she on snap? And she doesn't even have kids. And she has also chosen to live in a city that is very expensive to live.
