  • Craig put up 19 in a row for his second highest score of 24, he holds the record at 25 points. He and Bird both won 3 contests in a row. This was all before the all money ball rack like they have in today's shootout.

      He would not put up monster numbers. No evidence that he could manufacture high volume 3s at high percentages. Craig Hodges put up .400 for his career shooting only 2-3 3PA a game.
      Nobody but Steph is able to consistently put up .400+ while getting his own shot off the dribble.

    This guy only got to attempt two three-pointers a game. That's how different the approach was when higher percentage shots were favored even for the likes of Larry Bird. Nowadays, Hodges would've been unleashed as a spot up shooter.

      Lotus Hulkenberg Yes, if you look at my form it was the same every time. Steve said "Craig had that little hop". That's the foundation of the shot, then form, and then follow through. You can tell when a shooter is going to miss by looking at those three parts of their shot. Earlier in the night when Chris Bosh made the half court shots he knew they were going in when they left his hand.

    Craig Hodges (born June 27, 1960) won two NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers as a special assistant coach under his former Bulls coach, Phil Jackson. Craig Hodges and Larry Bird are the only two players to win three consecutive Three Point Contests at the National Basketball Association All-Star Weekend, winning the competition in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Hodges was runner up in 1986 and 1989. Hodges also holds the Three Point Contest records for the most consecutive shots made with 19, set in 1991, and the most points scored in a single round at 25, set in 1986. He played in the NBA for 10 seasons and led the league in 3-point shooting percentage three times. He has beat three point greats Larry Bird, Reggie Miller and Mark Price.
    When the Chicago Bulls visited the White House after winning the 1992 NBA Championship, Hodges dressed in a dashiki and delivered a hand-written letter addressed to then President George H. W. Bush, expressing his discontent at the administration's treatment of the poor and minorities. Hodges also criticized his Bulls teammate Michael Jordan for not using his fame to draw attention to social and political issues, and said Jordan was "bailing out" for not being politically outspoken. In 1996, Hodges filed a $40 million lawsuit against the NBA and it’s than 29 teams, claiming they blackballed him for his association with Louis Farrakhan and criticism of "African-American professional athletes who failed to use their considerable wealth and influence to assist the poor and disenfranchised." After he was waived by the Bulls in 1992, he did not receive an offer or a tryout from a single NBA team, even though he was only 32 years old and still able to contribute to contenders. The lawsuit claimed that Bulls assistant coach Jim Clemons told him that the team was troubled by his criticism of players' lack of involvement in inner-city communities.

    Still the G.O.A.T. Shootout performance!
    This makes me wonder, though, what Hodge's score in this round would've been if he had the all-money ball rack like the Shootouts have now. Where would Craig have placed _his_ rack? Where along the line did he shoot for his highest %? It would be interesting to see.

    • @smoothALOE

      He played in the Triangle Offense, so he shot most of his 3-pointers in the corners. If his all-money ball rack had been the 1st rack, it would’ve been an additional 4 points, making it 28. What amazes me the most is how long his 25-point 1st round in 1986 went unchallenged. Kapono tied it once, but that was in, like, 2008, haha!

    Unbelievable you all say? I'll tell you what is really unbelievable - that not ONE SINGLE nba team ever offered him a job after he was let go from the Bulls after that season. NOT ONE TEAM EVER AGAIN was able to find a spot on their roster for such a sharp shooter. True, he wasn't a good defensive player. But the same could be said about half the league, then and now. He always felt that he was blackballed by the league for the clothes he chose to wear to the White House and now I tend to believe it more and more these days.

      Horrible defense and he wasn't efficient at all his last two seasons. Daequan Cook also won the contest and he was out of the league at 25. What's his excuse? There's guys in the D League that could win the 3 point contest, it doesn't guarantee you're some unstoppable force in the NBA. So I don't buy this as evidence of league wide discrimination.

    • @grasd2
      @grasd2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hodges was 31 in his 10th season and his playing time was down to 9 minutes a game before he wore whatever he did to the White House. Were the Bulls preemptively discriminating against him, or was he already on his way out of the league? Whatever happened to Anthony Morrow, Boobie Gibson, Roger Mason, etc.? There's a lot of great deadeye shooters out there without contracts, because that's all they do. That seems to have been the situation with Hodges, especially in an era where 3 point shooting wasn't utilized nearly as much as it is now. Not everything is a juicy discrimination scandal.

      Oh christ..he didn't fall apart. He simply got tired. He was short. So he used his legs more than most. Jumping that many times in a row will tire anyone out.
