Tilt Trim Complete: My Dear Sir, that was an excellent video. My primary interest was related to the motor and pump and you answered all my questions completely! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
I remember our old 85 bayliner..Same problem..Mechanic told me on so many occasions he simply cleaned up these motors put them back togather. That was the case with our Trim Tilt Motor.. Now have a 8 HP Yamaha High Thrust motor for my kicker for my Glas Ply boat. We checked everything and indeed it's the motor. Thank you! .
You have helped me through a particularly difficult period. Buying a boat is akin to swimming in the shark infested Amazon River. And this one I have has been 1 pharque up after another. But the satisfaction of completing successfully repairs and replacements is great. Thank you.
Just fixed trim motor on yamaha 150 from 2006. Opened motor, cleaned all up with contact cleaner and toothbrush, brushes were clogged by dust so I cleaned springs that push brushes. All works fine now, I hope long time. Thanks for your help!
Hi Danger Stu New to the boating scene and bought a motor recently only to find out that the tilt trim was busted. jump on youtube and this was the first video that i've watched. after weeks of contemplating if i should or not. proud moment as i tackle the tilt trim following the video step by step and managed to get it working again! thanks Danger keep up the good work.
Thanks stu! Fixed my trim motor with your help. Water leaked into the housing and corroded a spring. Cleaned up with brake cleaner, installed a new spring now it's back up and running.
Fantastic! I had a 1987 90 HP Mercury that had the exact same intermittent problem. There was not a replacement unit available due to its age. I had to remove teh motor and took it to a Buddy that rebuilt starters and alternators. He cleaned it up like you did and put new brushes in. It worked great after that. I learned so much from watching this video about how to actually check out the motor myself! Thank you!
Excellent! I've been watching your videos for 6 mths now I've learned quite a bit. I have a feeling my trim is going to need to be service soon due to my trim will not go down sometimes but you can hear the motor working, I then will push it down by hand till it stops and it connects again and works fine. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Man this video is worth paying for saved me a pump replacement which was recommended I took the motor apart after watching this and found a stuck brush from factory spring tip was slightly bent allowing it to hook itself....thanks mate for the video
Just fixed mine trim today where the magnets in the trim motor housing came unglued and held the armature and making the motor hot, and not work. Ever had that before? As with all your others, the video was very helpful, thanks Stu.
Dangar Marine I replaced the tilt tube the other day and had to cut it into 3 pieces to get it out. Felt like such an accomplishment once fixed and saved me the money for a new hydraulic steering system. Your other vid was very helpful for that too. I reckon your a millionaire in the money you have saved boaties from your vids! Thanks again, from Nauru
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I have a trim motor on my boat and have not been able to use it because I had no clue how to fix it, my buddie told me about this video and I went and did everything you said and it works like a dream! I've never had a boat with a power trim on it before and now I do!
Second time I watched it to repair the motor. A mechanic in the yard wanted to charge me to do it but I told him I already had it done. Thanks so much. It does get dirty with not even that much use. Ted
I finally got around to checking out my power trim and following your advice, I discovered the brushes were worn down all I had to do is replace them and everything is working just fine. The hardest part was getting it all back together. Thanks for you advice.
An auto electrician friend of mine puts armatures in a lathe and machines the commutator flat again. After all they wear just like brushes, and brushes have springs to push them out into the comm. I use my drill press and emery paper. ***another great video Stu*** thanks.
Just want to say thank you for your vids, acquired a half cabin with 140 evinrude that I'm slowly nursing back to health. Couldn't do it without your help.
Thank you. Did it this afternoon and works great. After watching your video it showed me how easy it would be to fix it. Thank you. P.S. You have a life long fan.
Thanks! Tore apart mine off of a 2007 Yamaha 90 TLR using this video. A simple cleaning with the brake cleaner to get rid of the brush dust got it running correctly. Great video.
Not sure I'll ever take a pump motor apart to repair or clean, but it's a great video as far as informing all of us what's inside, what it does, and how to repair it if there aren't any other options!
Great video. I have a Mercury manual and it said the motor was not serviceable. I figured it had to have brushes. Now I am not afraid to pull it apart.
Excellent video and don't be sorry for showing us the motor internals so well! It's actually good to see some electric motors are still serviceable and can be opened easily. Marine life can be hard to brushes and commutators because there is humidity all the time and temperature is changing also. Humidity can make the powder that brushes leave stickier for sure and jam it easily. Thanks for all the advice.
Problem solved !! Traced the wire from the switch to the relays and behind it was a bad connection Love your videos Thank you and have s blessed day !! B
Like so many other comments-I too enjoyed a most informative video. Really well shot video too. Pulled motor apart as case/housing was rusted with pin-hole and yet still in great bright condition, however, still have problem in that hydraulic pump is still not doing its thing. Thanks for sharing, please don't stop helping. 🇦🇺
Dang dude. I am an hvac technician of the better part of 16 years and I can run circles around most. I have a problem with my 115hp Johnson and my man, if you didn't just put it in my terms! Love it!. Keep it up!! My man!!
Thanks for video, I had Tohatsu M40D tilt not working. Only manage to take out the lower bolt, the upper bolt is STUCK. But did manage to take out everything in pump, valves and clean. It works now not sure if it was air or debries in the system that stopped it from working. Found a good way to take are out, open bypass valve, take off the lower bolt so unit can be usped up and down by hand, remove motor. With motor away you can push it up and down and easily top up oil, there is surprisingly much oil needed if it has been drained, and surprisingly much air. I found that it was when rod was nearly fully retracted the air came out so moving it up and down there was a quick way to get air out.
Great video. Sat around trying to decide whether to take the boat into the shop and spend $1200 for a tilt assembly replacement or replace the motor myself. I will give it a shot...
Posted my motor/housing replacement on TH-cam last week, smooth as silk. Thanks again! Now planning for a lower yolk replacement maybe swivel tube assembly replacement this winter. Big job (for me). The corrosion is getting scary and the metal retaining ring below the lower yolk has fallen out. If you're in Texas this winter and want to lend a hand let me know, I'll supply the Lone Star.
Excellent! Great tutorial! You explained everything in just the right amount of detail to help me to understand the method for me to now repair my trim tilt motor. Well done!
Thanks a ton for this video mate! Just fixed my trim motor. Blue wire was broken inside the motor. Re attached with solder so hopefully it holds, working now though so all good. Cheers 👍
Thank you Stu you’re a real help. I’ve just open up my F90 trim motor cause it only works when i gave it a little tap. When i open up its carbon brushe a bit dirty. Problem is i just don’t know how to put it back together. Thanks a lot👍
I just recently bought my first boat and have learned ALLOT from you and your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make these. I still haven't got it running yet but i will soon. One problem at a time being resolved. I'd like to buy you a drink. How do i send you money!?
You're welcome mate, glad the video have been helping you. I have a PayPal link on the channel page and a Patreon account for donation which are always appreciated. :) www.patreon.com/dangarmarine
Awesome video. Subscribed. On my outboard the trim is making the same sound as if it was working, it just doesn't go(move) up or down. It hasn't dropped down at all, so it is holding itself up at least.
very good video, even for someone who is quite knowlegable in this field already, its always good to see some good instruction out there and not someone just pretending they knowwhat theyre doing and actually helping people mess up their stuff further, just doing some research and i stumbled on this video, very nice instruction and alot of useful information for anybody just getting started trying to learn this stuff... very nice my friend, you got a another sub :)
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to figure out what's going on with the starter in my generator for a few days now, going to take another look since I watched your video and see if I missed something.
You have some very good videos. Your experience really shows. How do you fix a manual release valve that is stuck? Mine is stuck. I've used big screw drivers to try and turn it. Used a hammer to help free it. Used different types of oil to help free it. It seems to be very stuck.
Yes, that is quite comment because it is so close to the waterline and tricky to fix. Heat is usually your friend here, and an impact screwdriver can also be gold. Use a gas torch to heat the body of the unit around the screw and then hit it with the impact screwdriver. Be careful of any plastic parts and the boat itself if it isn't removed.
Here is a added note. When you shut off a generator, or a rototiller, gas power washer, plus any engine pertaining to engines that will sit for long periods of time, try this if you want the valve spring to last much longer which helps with horsepower, pull the pull starter until you feel resistance remember intake, compression, power and exhaust. When you go into the compression stroke this is when both intake and exhaust valves will be closed. Hens forth relaxed spring that will last longer. Oh and thanks Dangar Marine.
I fix my trim pump but I screw it up when conct the wires back i 100% sure I conect it wrong because now when i push the button up don’t do anything but when i push the button down the motor goes up and i can figure out
Loved your video thank you so much for posting i knew you could do this with starter motors i was hoping this one too now i know thanks to you i will have my trim going again in the morning . Thanks
Love your video and followed Every step. I still have a question ... How important is the position of the Big magnets in the cover of the Engine and how should they be positioner ? Thanx for a great video :-)
What engine is that Yamaha F90-100-115, after watching this video I feel confident enough to embarc in fixing/or replacing it myself. Thanks for taking the time to make and upload the video. I have a 2002 Yamaha F100. It looks similar to the motor on the video. Thanks again Greetings from Puerto Rico
Thanks for the vid, very helpful to know the seal is removable and how to get it out. I've pulled the wiper seal from Suzuki Showa unit for a df70-df115. It has the NOK LBI 18x26x4.5/6 double lip wiper if anyone else was searching. Unlike Honda, Suzuki don't list the individual seal on the parts list instead trying to sell the whole resovior for ~$300 instead of $13. I am doing this job in stitu to avoid removing the hydro steering and 190kg of motor. Looks like this Suzuki unit has a drain bung on the bottom to assist flushing the fluid. Will be flushing out the milky stuff with dextron III ATF.
I’m have same issues my trim and tilt won’t work but let it sit 2 days or so than it works take it to the lake than stops again! Could it be my motor is bad? Thanks great channel!
I did check the comments to see if it was mentioned. Question: Is any kind of lubrication suggested for the bearings at the ends of the armature? I happen to have a trim motor apart now. The magnets came loose from the can and I'm about to re-glue them using Loctite 325. Everything else looks fine inside the trim motor but I will do some clean up like shown in the video. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for the video, it really helped me out since I had no service manual. My only problem is that my motor now works but it doesn't pump. Would the motor close if the male slot didn't fall into the female slot? Or could it be fluid? I'm getting a spinning sound but it kinda seems like it's spinning too freely. I guess you can say it's spinning strong but without the pumping sound. I noticed that yours worked without even adding fluid. I have a 89 suzuki dt115. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Another great video. i really like the way you take the explanation down to a level so people like me can understand it! Great job! another thing. i have a Yamaha 40Hp form 1999 with a broken tilt/trim, thats obviously why im here, anyways, the pressure release valve/screw is completely stuck, and i have no idea if its "open" or "closed" i can manualy raise the motor, and that makes me think that it must be open? :) Any advise would be super! :D
Very helpful video, I have a 2004 Suzuki 40 horse, motor goes down but not up, gonna try what you did, I think that will make it work I’ll let you know
Getting the brushes held back to install the motor; String or floss looped around each wire feeding the brushes pulled and held back, then drop in the motor partially, release and pull out string, drop motor in totally.
I actually cut my wires close to the trim motor then I soldered them back up. I guess this is a nono is the wiring removable once you have the motor apart?
Great video!!! I think you have solved my problem. I have to occasionally tap motor to get it to work, wondering if brushes are just dirty & sticking as in your video. Do you think that might be my problem?
If taping the motor helps then it is most likely the brushes. If you are going to go to the effort of opening the motor up you may as well replace them while you are there, new ones aren't expensive.
Can hear clicking as I try to trim the engine and the battery turns the engine over would this still be not enough power in the batterie ? Have only just found this problem today ☹️have not started the engine since last summer did charge battery but not sure how much charge was in it just watched all the blog I think I’ll find it from all the info should have wAtched it all first many thanks from the Uk 👊🏻😁
Very good, just kinda wondering about the condition of the springs (after cleaning) ?? And if there would be a gain with new springs if available to help maintain proper spring tension.
+Brian Smith Hey mate. That's not what my wife says. ;) Sounds like you're problem is either the switch or the relay. Can you hear the motor trying to lift the motor when you hit the up button?
Great video, getting to the back of those alan keys bolts is tricky! I use long shaft alan key and a ring spanner on short arm for torque on mine. Getting them back, blue tac in alan key hole works as theres no space for fingers in behind motor. My issue is Current I believe, how do i test it? My tilt in both up and down will go from fine to slow deeper sound up or down, and tilts in slow motion. Motor will only sometimes replicate this in my hand too when separated from hydraulics. Its sparkling clean communtator, cleaned, sanded bushes so they dont stick, expanded spings to provide more push...no relief. frustrated... and i like to fix the odd thing myself.
Hi Dangar Stu,I have a catamaran with two 15hp 4 stroke outboards in pods.It has trim/tilt to raise the legs up and down.1 leg on port raises all the way up. The other on starboard raises about 3/4 the way up.Both legs run off the same Hydraulic system. The hydraulic motor labours when the legs are lifted to the maximum up position, and legs won't go any higher. Is there anyway that I can make the SB leg lift higher so that it is out of the water (the same as the Port side)?I have tried locking the Port down lower, but SB leg wont lift any higher.I love watching your Vids and appreciate the time you put in to show the workings!Regards,Stuart.
hi you do a great job its a joy to watch your videos I watched on 1 of your videos that you now have a Honda I have the Honda bf90 would love to know more about it cheers
Love the vids, man you are one awesome instructor , no guessing with you. You really show all the details . My trim motor works, but it won't go up, or down. I tried loosening the screw and lifting up and down 3-4 times and tightened screw. It went up a little ways and stopped, so I thought it needed more bleeding, so did the procedure again, and now it don't work at all again .The motor is turning but doesn't even try to go up .What could cause this ? Should I drain and replace the fluid ? Maybe water in there ? Thanks, and keep up the awesome work !
@@DangarMarine Hey , you are still around ! I couldn't find any recent stuff from you, thought maybe you moved on to bigger , better things . (Glad to see you have not) Do you have a vid doing trim on a merc ? It has two little pins that hold the two bigger pins for removal from the mounting bracket . They are not threaded or anything, what keeps them from falling out ( other than corrosion ), and how do you get them out ?
Tilt Trim Complete: My Dear Sir, that was an excellent video. My primary interest was related to the motor and pump and you answered all my questions completely! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
You're welcome, glad it helped you. :)

You have helped me through a particularly difficult period. Buying a boat is akin to swimming in the shark infested Amazon River. And this one I have has been 1 pharque up after another. But the satisfaction of completing successfully repairs and replacements is great. Thank you.
You're welcome David, happy to help! :)
Danger is the world’s go to doctor when it comes to marine mechanics ! Thanks again mate from the 🇺🇸!!!!
Literally the Don of Outboards
I fixed the steering last night using your technique to unsieze the steering rod by "twisting" it. Worked perfectly!!!
Good news! :)
Just fixed trim motor on yamaha 150 from 2006. Opened motor, cleaned all up with contact cleaner and toothbrush, brushes were clogged by dust so I cleaned springs that push brushes. All works fine now, I hope long time. Thanks for your help!
Hi Danger Stu
New to the boating scene and bought a motor recently only to find out that the tilt trim was busted. jump on youtube and this was the first video that i've watched. after weeks of contemplating if i should or not. proud moment as i tackle the tilt trim following the video step by step and managed to get it working again! thanks Danger keep up the good work.
Nice one, glad to hear you got it going again. :)
Thanks stu! Fixed my trim motor with your help. Water leaked into the housing and corroded a spring. Cleaned up with brake cleaner, installed a new spring now it's back up and running.
You're welcome mate, glad to hear it is all fixed up. :)
Thanks Anthony. Yes, I would start with an oil change first and go from there.

Hey Ted, it is surprising how much carbon comes off the brushes and how quickly it happens.
I finally got around to checking out my power trim and following your advice, I discovered the brushes were worn down all I had to do is replace them and everything is working just fine. The hardest part was getting it all back together. Thanks for you advice.
Yes, it is tricky holding the springs back to get the motor back together. Glad you got it working though!
Thank you so much for this video Stu. I put new Yamaha springs and brushes in mine. Cheap fix! Brush on one side was stuck in my electric motor.
An auto electrician friend of mine puts armatures in a lathe and machines the commutator flat again. After all they wear just like brushes, and brushes have springs to push them out into the comm. I use my drill press and emery paper.

Top stuff Stu!!! always love watching you vids!!!

GREAT VIDEO, ONLY THING I WOULD HAVE DONE IS GREASE THOSE BUSHING ON THE ARMATURE SHAFT. THANKS,RUSS
Thanks Russ, good point about greasing it while it is out, no better time.
Thank you Sir. Great work!
You’re welcome. 😊
Excellent video. You saved me $ and frustration.
Thanks. Great step by step.
Glad it was helpful!
Good tips thanks! My rele is clicking and wire heat up. Any idea? i think the motor.
Nice job making this video. Thank you.
Thanks mate, you're welcome. :)
@@DangarMarine hi I have a 1987 90hp mercury....the solenoid click when I try go up or down....battery is new...is it just a dead motor? Cheers
I’m have same issues my trim and tilt won’t work but let it sit 2 days or so than it works take it to the lake than stops again! Could it be my motor is bad? Thanks great channel!
Something I read somewhere for the wiring to the trim motor blue wire sky up green wire grass down 😁
Excellent informative video. Thanks.
Great video mate, thanks for your time and knowledge on making it. Much appreciated
just what I was looking for, thanks.
Glad the video could help. :)
Never thought picking locks was a transferable skill. Funny.
Great job!
another thing.
i have a Yamaha 40Hp form 1999 with a broken tilt/trim, thats obviously why im here, anyways, the pressure release valve/screw is completely stuck, and i have no idea if its "open" or "closed"
i can manualy raise the motor, and that makes me think that it must be open? :)
Any advise would be super! :D
Very helpful video, I have a 2004 Suzuki 40 horse, motor goes down but not up, gonna try what you did, I think that will make it work I’ll let you know
Could be a relay problem.
Dangar Marine ok I’m not a good mechanic so maybe you could tell me where that relay is, I’ve searched the internet can fine anything for my motor tho
I replaced the relay and all it does is click
Very helpful and detailed!
Getting the brushes held back to install the motor;
String or floss looped around each wire feeding the brushes pulled and held back, then drop in the motor partially, release and pull out string, drop motor in totally.
I used a feeler gauge between the commutator and brush to slip it back in.
If you can get new springs it would be worth putting them in.
your a genius my switch only works in one way that's going down I will try your options
+Brian Smith Hey mate. That's not what my wife says. ;) Sounds like you're problem is either the switch or the relay. Can you hear the motor trying to lift the motor when you hit the up button?
Well done love the information 😊
Thanks Andrew!
Great video. Just got a boat took it out for the first time and can longer raise my trim. It will go down but not up. Any ideas?
I would start by checking the oil level.
Thanks…this video really me understand the hydraulic black box I was afraid to open! Knock on wood…I think I fixed mine. Cheers
Awesome! Thank you so much for this video.
Thanks Jimmy. I'll have that Honda back in the workshop for a bit more work soon and will be sure to film it.
Again Thank You, Muchas Gracias mi amigo
You're welcome. :)
you are an awesome instructor
Thanks Nick!
Thank you my guy! I am going to rip mine's apart.
Could be stuck valves inside the hydraulic ram, bad seals, of the drive shaft from the electric motor not engaging properly with the hydraulic pump.
