My mom was like that with my dad after confessing that she cheated on him, yet went to bed peacefully no stress there and went back to picking fights with him thinking she's superior, even though my dad makes more money than her and has a bigger connection of friends. cheaters just like to act like everything is normal and point blame when theyre upset, they never properly and genuinely own up to the shit they did.

After 2 (and maybe a hlf maybe less) years i finally had enough of his shit and left him but now i gotta fight to get my daughter out of foster care cuz of his family doing bad things to her (not to sound like an attention seeker or anything but my daughter should have been dead cuz of everything they put her thru (but im glad she isnt cuz then id loose myself)).

Constantly thinking about appearances and never about what is actually happening is a recipe for disaster in any family. Even going as far as minimizing her actions and still trying to blame her ex-husband for not being the one to trying to fix their relationship. I am glad that that man got out of the relationship and hope he is in a better one or has found something to turn his life from downhill to uphill and live happy without his ex.

I have to admit op had a good point at the end grades at the end of the day don't matter if you don't develop the skills outside of school. I mean his sister literally has the best grades out of the two of them but has no confidence and all because she never kept the develop that. at the end of the day their parents insistence on good grades and high paying jobs only destroyed their children's future.
also if they wanted to have a good image for the community then they should have been good parents from the start and not Force all of those unnecessary expectations onto their children. because what you do to your children can and welcome back to bite you in the ass One Way or Another.
and also I think this is the greatest revenge you could do to your parents. not take away their money not take away their livelihoods or even their homes. take away their reputation and expose them for the people that they really are. because at the end of the day that's will be there end.

I’m not even through the first story right now but it has hit so close to home in terms of how in and Asian house hold grades are everything and god forbid you aren’t able to live up to the expectations that your elder siblings set.
Tbh just like OP in story 1, I also grew up with a little family owned shop (difference being we had a convenience store and not a grocery store) and I ended up being really involved in the business when growing up, and yet I was still supposed to focus more on school even though I was being dragged to the shop where they could keep an eye on me.
Not sure if you guys know, but behind the counter at a convenience store isn’t the easiest place to study if you’re having to get up every five minutes to take care of your stream of regular customers who are just getting off work and want their usual smokes or drinks 😅
Thankfully my parents never got as excessive as OP’s and the ultimatum for my family was just so long as I finish school, go to college and get a bachelor’s and make a decent living for myself they’re happy. God bless my parents for understanding that their upbringing they provided me has given me a lot of other skills necessary to lead a successful life.
Also now that I’m older I have started to see a psychologist and found out I have ADHD and it has me mentally bouncing off the walls like crazy which explains my poor academic performance in my younger years. I’m good at retaining information, but I’m garbage when it comes to sitting still and focusing at what’s in front of me so taking tests makes me anxious because I would end up rereading the same question 10 times over before processing what I’m being asked.
Sometimes I wonder if I had gotten checked for that sooner, maybe I wouldn’t have struggled to keep my grades up nearly as much.
A lot of my friends are also immigrants or come from immigrant families and I’ve come to notice that a lot of immigrant families don’t exactly believe in psychological issues and just believe that it’s because you’re inadequate 🥲
Sorry for the long rant but the first half of the first story just hit so close to home so I just needed to vent 😂

This is actually truth about our Asian countries. I still didn't get it why my parents so much in good marks from 1-9 standard when no one even ask for them at any place, I mean no job interview or test has I been asked of my school marks not even college entrances exams of different asian countires just my college grades and coding knowledge and aptitude was asked.
And what the obession with doctor and engineering what about commerce and arts.
That part is true as well our parents do threw us out for bad grades and even beat us, I still remember how for not making some idiotic copy of english(My teacher ususally only made us copy entire book and i was generally not the type of person who you say even read his copies , I just read my school books for exams), my mom literally threw me out for of house with I set of clothes for nearly half a day.
But I don't agree on his point of not treating guest properly in our culture thier is a term called 'Atithi Devo Bhava' this means that every guest is like a god and should be treated like a god.

I don't know how things are now, but back in the 90's in the US (Possibly not the whole country, just the part I was in), your early to mid grade school grades didn't matter at all so long as you weren't held back. The closest they came to mattering was in final year of middle school, if you wanted to start high school in advanced placement classes, which supposedly gave you an extra advantage to getting into the better colleges.
Considering what happened to the way colleges admitted people in the early 2000's, how school loans worked, and the employment prospects later on, the whole thing kind of feels like a scam, looking back on it.

Right?? My grandparents, while not as judgemental and punishing as my parents, comment on my grades and saying that it is important if i want a good job later on. It didn't even click with me on how it was supposed to help me get a job. The only time when I'd see them be at least useful was when i was looking for scholarship. And that, also is taken care of with an ielts score of 7.5+. So every tad bit of usefulness from my school's grade completely vanished out of my mind. To be fair, i haven't taken an ielts exam yet but planning on taking next year at around the same time as my high school's exam. University do be costing a lot and i do not want to be a burden. I want to do coding as a mean to make a living(BUT I WANT TO BE AN ARTIST SO BAD AAAAAAAGH). Sorry that's turned into a bit of a rant but whatever. In no universe should school grade be what your children see as the only way to success as it would, quite ironically, mess them up quite a lot and might take away their chance of success.

And not just regular strict parents. People like in the story with destructive societal expectations, or the odd student that is trying to get into some ridiculously niche program. It's so rare that I could never figure out why it existed in the first place. Programs don't exist if enough students don't go for them, you know?
