This is a simulation of the Sentry Gun configuration program as used by Hicks in the film Aliens. It simulates a corridor with Aliens entering at the other end (and sometimes dropping from the roof closer to the gun) and running/crawling towards you. All this in internal to the program (so you have to use your imagination), but it seems to do the job nicely :-)
It is written in AMOS Pro on an Amiga.
You can move the cursor around the screen and select the options (and guns A to D). Some of the options do actually make a difference (choose between auto and manual firing, targeting mode etc.) When you arm it you go to the second screen where the action is.
It's best viewed full screen, so you can read it properly.

V1.1 Now corrects the ammo counter. It should always show three digits, e.g. 005 instead of 5.

V1.5 fixed the flashing "Critical" to flash with "reversed video" text, and added a settings screen to change number of Aliens, amount of ammo, stats screen on/off, gun sounds on/off, and a continuous play mode so it can be left running on its own.
The sentry gun scene is one of my favorites. "Aliens" is set in the late 22nd century, but the computer is drawn in the image of MS-DOS, which was the mainstream in the 1980s.
Good Job. They have a version of these guns in South Korea, pointing north, and they are intelligent and self firing...
i think targetting profile soft/hard etc refers to how the programmable ammo should be configured to act, it can act like a hollow point against soft targets or like an armor-piercing round against hard targets, this is exactly how the smartgun is supposed to work in Aliens lore too

If only Hudson read this manual, the Alien sequels or Alien vs. Predator shit would not have been existent.
I digitised all the sounds directly from the film into my Amiga, so what you hear is straight from the real Sentry Gun laptop sounds. Also, the shooting is digitised from one of the scenes where the SG's are shooting. I think I did it from the scene where they are watching the laptops, so it's supposed to sound like you are in a room close by, not stood in the corridor with the guns.
In Battlefield 2142 the Support class soldier has an unlock for a mini clone of one of these type guns you can deploy, to shoot other players. Generally easy to destroy, when two are deployed enfilade pointed at a door opening, they are vicious. Also very vicious when used in trap scenarios, where its hidden, and player walks past it, and it starts shooting them in the back, and you are shooting from the front confusing his brain, or there is a goodie enticement you threw down he is going for in front of him.

The Sentry Guns used in the film WERE MG-42's! :-) The speed it overheats in the film is probably there to add a bit of drama, though I have no idea how fast these things heat up.

I've done a quick vid. It's extremely easy to get WinUAE running, I just hope the video is readable. I'm not too sure how it's going to look. I'll try to get it up in the next day or two. I always include instructions when people email me asking for the program, so it's not usually a problem anyway.
@acountddd Unfortunately not. I suppose I could have randomly added an Alien scream when some are killed. It might have been a good addition.

I know. It concentrates its fire on hard targets and aims more accurately to kill the target with sustained fire. On soft targets, it only fires briefly and isn't as accurate, as they will be injured/killed much more easily with a few bullets.
The descriptions describe the result of choosing the option, not what the target hardness means, if you know what I mean. I tried to keep the text short.

I always assumed "interrogate" more generically referred to a submenu with detailed logs - usage history, errors/malfunctions, operations within and outside of various parameters, lifetime count of rounds expended, etc...

@detlev07 I'm not sure which part you mean, but there is sound whenever the gun fires, and when the Sentry Software changes options, just like on the film. You should be able to hear it clearly on my video.

Is it possible to run it in MSDOS or make a version that will work?
I think there were early DOS versions of UAE and Fellow emulators, though I don't know if they would work properly or are still available.
I have a new version that will run without an emulator (on almost anything), but I'm waiting for the language to get the option to save out executable files to run it, as it's currently running in my browser as a test. If DOS could run a graphical Javascript browser game, then it should work with my new one, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

This looks great! I am currently building a GUI for a Raspi touchscreen device. I love the clean design... Any hints on a similar free font (I would not mind paying for it, but there is always a chance I will fail in using it)?
I'm not aware of the font anywhere else, though you could do a Google search for "Aliens sentry gun font". I created this one myself as an Amiga bitmap font, so that wouldn't be of any use to you.
Thanks for the reply. I have already done some research on Google, I guess fonts are particularly hard to find. I will search some more and leave some info once my gui is finished. The gui here is a pretty sweet template for my tripod mounted 7 inch touchscreen. Cheers!

Well I think gridcase computer were used for the Nostromo's screens in the first movie, so if it's the case, it's probably the same thing with these sentries...
Yep. The one used in the film is the GRiD Compass II 1139, as far as I know.

Yes, good idea. I made it to be screen accurate, but later versions have lots of options if you want to change things, but changing the rate wasn't one of them. I'll put that in the next version (which will not be emulated, it should work on anything modern).

Yes, it runs on Win 7 64 (that's what I use when running it on my Windows PC), but you have to emulate an Amiga to run it. It may be possible to run it on almost anything in the future (without emulation), but that's not definite at the moment.

i dont think the sentry guns would be smart enough to know how many aliens were killed. they would just be programmed to shoot at movement. also in the film the guns did not overheat like that

How about 5000 rounds on every turret?
For the film it adds tension to the scenes to have a low amount, but I added an option in my program to allow up to 995 rounds.

995 rounds sounds a hell of a lot better. It just makes the marines look smarter, taking more ammo with them. 500 rounds is probably how much they shot with their main guns. Lol I think they could have prolonged the scene with more shooting, or could have made the aliens dodge the turrets gun fire, kinda like how they dodged the predators shooting in AVP. If it were real, it would be tracking targets so it can shoot them, so it would know when it's destroyed one, otherwise it would just keep shooting at the one alien and never shoot anything else. Mine knows because it uses randomness in targeting and getting a hit, depending on the distance and where it was previously targeted. It just adds them up and displays the result. I thought it would be interesting to see.
