Escape from PETSCII Castle - Commodore PET 4032 - Real Hardware
Inspired by Wolfenstein 3D, this is a first person shooter for the PET!
You explore the castle, collecting prizes, health, ammo, a better weapon, finding secret passages, and shooting baddies (or stabbing them). Get to the lift at the end to escape.
It had four difficulty levels, and a few different control options.
This is my best score, so it's more of a speedrun. I managed to beat Jim's best score at the time he released it :-) Sorry, Jim.
Of course, this is great! It's not as big as Wolf 3D, but it running on a 32k computer using keyboard characters. Extremely impressive.
Get it from here: jimbo.itch.io/escape-from-petscii-castle
00:00 Speedrun.
08:50 A bit of stabbing, and being killed.

I've just found out that Geoff died a couple of weeks ago, so here is my best attempt at this game. It's REALLY hard. The first one you need to press the flashing muscle as quick as possible (the effort changes the muscles faster). I think you need to press a certain number before the time is out. The second one you have to push the guy out the ring. I don't know how this works and took a coupl...

A recently found Asteroids game originally written in 1979/80 by Andrew Farmer. It's had a few fixes done by Milasoft and released here: milasoft64.itch.io/a-f-asteroids No sound, but a decent game of Asteroids. My webcam software/phone/PC seems to stutter occasionally when recording from my phone to OBS, so any slight pauses/dropped frames aren't from the game. 0:00 Intro, demo, title screens ...

This is a shoot-em-up that I got as part of the Amiga 2020 Documentary Kickstarter. I hadn't tried it until yesterday. It was written by Stephen Fletcher, the great title screen is by Trevor Storey, with the equally great music by Rob Hubbard and Jason Page. It's split into three main parts that are like Galaxian, Star Wars, and Defender, with some bonus and asteroid parts added. You can collec...

Released for Halloween, this is a game made in SEUCK (The Shoot-'Em-Up Construction Kit). I've made a few games with it on the Amiga, but I've never used it on the C64. My first two or three goes I didn't make it to the end, but then I had this go that lasted two hours and could have gone on forever because it doesn't get harder each loop (a limitation of SEUCK I'd expect). I eventually looped ...

This is the sequel to the Vic-20 game Pentagorat that I did a playthrough on a couple of years ago - th-cam.com/video/F8Xj9rIptd0/w-d-xo.html When I saw this one was released last week I had to get it, and I wasn't disappointed. It's similar to the first one, though with it being on the C64 it has better graphics and this time it has music playing throughout. Once you know what you are doing yo...

A modern PET version of Jeff Minter's Vic-20 game (which was also released on several other platforms). This one is released by Milasoft: milasoft64.itch.io/gridrunner This also allows joystick controls, which would be much easier, but I don't have an adapter for that, so it's the numpad to move and 'A' to shoot. It's a great version, and if you look at it being played on the C64, this one is v...

A 2024 version of the arcade game Wizard of Wor. It's quite similar to the original, and is really good as a single player. I haven't played a proper two player game on it yet, but I expect that will be even better. The keys are a bit odd, but that's to avoid conflicts with key presses on a two player game. I don't think I played this when it came out in the arcades, but I did play Drelbs which came out a couple of years later, which was similar with the rotating doors. This version doesn't have as many doors, but isn't bad at all. It has an invisible maze on level 4, but apart from that each level is the same. The enemies each have their own way of moving, so you can plan your moves sometimes, an...

You can never have too many Donkey Kong clones! Well, actually I've never been much of a fan of it, so you can have too many, but I liked this one. A good version I think, but I always seem to like clones of it better than the real thing. Maybe it's because they are eas...

This is a great shooter, obviously inspired by Galaxian but simpler. There are several different attack ships with different types of weapons (some aim at you, others split into a shower of deadly bombs). One of my favourite C64 games was brought to the BBC Micro with impressive results. This is probably the second best version. It actually came out on the Atari ST (though not the Amiga), and looked almost exactly like the C64, but ran much slower. I don't know if that's because all the videos I've seen are showing an NTSC version for some reason. I'd say this is harder than the C64 original, as...

I remember this game. I didn't often get to play Oric 1 games because it was only really owned by one of my classmates (who didn't have the game) and his.... I don't remember if it was uncle or what, but HE had this game, and I got to see it and even try it. Man, it's weird to see how jittery my childhood memories are when I didn't exactly remember them as such. And I certainly didn't remember a shark crashing so hard into an underwater cave wall that they left a hole. Last boss fight looked kinda bugged, though: wasn't the alien dude supposed to sit right above a ship that had this scrolling barrier that you had to shoot your way through to get at the boss? You could see it for a second, but it all seemed to just glitch away.
Brilliant, thanks for putting this together!
Very good game for 16 kb
Astonishingly, impressively... bad 😅
When was the vic-20 version published? What? In my broken memory I always thought this game was an original vic-20 port, but it was released on the c-64 in '82 it seems and I cannot find a vic-20 port.
It was made by HAL Labs in Japan and shown at the CES show in June 1981. It was called Midnight Drive at that point, but they changed the name as Atari thought it was too similar to their Night Driver. It was released in 1981.
This should be called Escape from Castle PETSCIISTEIIN
This is a blast from the past .. For some reason when I got past the cave & fireballs I get to the area of the rockets taking off then game just crashed... never saw it past that.. thanks for sharing 😊
Oh my, this brings me back. Thank you 🙏
How does this not have any comments? I'm subbing rn
Ooh, it's like LA Swat without the explicit racism.
Shoot-'Em-Up Construction Kit games should be banned. Atrocious.
This game does not have the charm of the first part which is legendary
I haven't tried the first one. I'll definitely give that a go.
Cool game! The music and game vibes remind me of Nightbreed which used to freak me out on the C64.
Good soundtrack and graphics.. seems like a solid game. and SEUCK for the 64 was an actual useful thing .. opposed to the Amiga version, where games made using SEUCK always felt boring and shallow :( I'd really like the sound and visuals of this game in an action adventure, instead of just a simple shooter, though! )
I hear a lot of people saying the Amiga SEUCK wasn't as good, but I don't know what the C64 one did that the Amiga one didn't. When I see C64 ones I don't see anything different, though it has been a while since I used it on the Amiga.
@@necronom These games (like SEUCK games, too) suffer from a lack of good proportion. This means things like the screen feeling too wide or too narrow, the objects like the player sprite or the enemies being too big or too small. One clear example for this is, porting the player sprite as just 'one sprite'. While on the C64 this most often ios perfectly fine, because one C64's sprite is taking an adequate portion of the overall screen size, this usually is terrible on the Amiga, becaise one single sprites width is just too small usiing the Amiga's resolution. And even while these things may seem like trivia at first, there are issues that come with these parameters not being 'right'. Those issues are timing related in character. For example: Crossing a higher resolution screen with same speed per pixels, will stuill take longer than on a higher resolution screen. This of course countns for each and everything on screen. For the player, for the enemies, for shots, for the background, for mutliplpe parallex levels, even for relation of the ingame objects to HUD size and whatever. And, as of course it's not possible to do a 'perfect conversion' in the meaning of everythiing being of identical size and proportions, yet making full use of the Amiga's capabilities (because that woudl require using fractions of pixels instead of full pixels), there just is reason enough to think that it's simply not possible to have most of these games even being good on the Amiga
@@necronom And games *not* being optimizied in these parameters, but actually feeling like the random result of what comes from framing C64 sized objects into the Amiga's resolutions and proportions, is what's making these games feel off and boring, because of the speed and timing issues that inevitably come with. Good games require system specific tuning, even if this means a redesign of a whole map, whole graphic set or even the essential gemeplay loop itself. And the Amiga is different machine requiring different games tailored towards it's dapabilities and limitations, too, just like the C64, and sadly not too many ported games on the Amiga can actually show what ther Amiga is capable of, when it comes to not only 'looking good and sounding good', but also being fun and entertaining, as we know. So, for converted C64 games being good on the Amiga, a whole redevelopment is needed instead of simple porting. Devs need to find different parameters for all timings and subsequently visual proportions of anything, and then do whole new testing if a game is actually fun for achieving this. And so I think the lack of adapting parameters towards the requirements of the Amiga in the 'size and speed' department of objects, is the main issue for SEUCK games not being fun on the Amiga, too
@@necronom And: Sorry for the mess and mass of replies.. somehow YT felt the need to censor my comments, when I wrote all text in one comment .
Is this the Pet's best Asteroirds clone? If using your thursters aren't worth it, where's the fun in that?
I think it's the best one. I used the thrust occasionally, but it's a bit clunky and I usually end up hitting an asteroid. Pressing space to jump is usually better depending on how many things are on screen.
Is there a midi version of the ST?
I doubt it, but SID tunes are usually released (you can find them on the HVSC site) and can be played using something like VLC, or from a website like DeepSID. The previous game is on both those, but not the sequel at the moment I'm typing this. deepsid.chordian.net/?file=/MUSICIANS/B/Bayliss_Richard
AWESOME IDEA FOR A CHANNEL!
I'm glad you like it. It's very random. I have a bunch of old computers so I just randomly play something and if I can upload a game that brings something new to TH-cam I'll do it. It's usually getting further in a game, a full playthrough, a game that hasn't been done, or something like that. I avoided the C64 until this week as it's very difficult to find a game that hasn't already been done several times by other people. Same with the Amiga. That's why I have quite a lot of PET and Vic-20 games, or more obscure games generally. Also doing them on the real computers brings something slightly new as most videos are from emulators.
That soundtrack was booming!!
Ahhh! FROG, I remember it well..
why are the sounds kinda... delayed?
That's my fault. I didn't notice it at the time. These days I always fix the delay from the capture as there is usually a 3 frame delay. This one was with my previous PC and had a longer delay which I didn't notice when watching it back.

This sort of semigraphics resolution was commonly used in TRS-80 Model I/III games. A lot of these games could have been ported between PET and TRS-80, but for some reason few ever were.
I don't know much about the TRS-80, but looking at some pics of games for it, they look very similar.
There's been no way to remove the Petscii softsprite masks but even so the result is absolutely magnificent 😮
The PET had no modifiable chars and no sprites. The coder of this game is a mad genius, full-stop.
Indeed. All using the quarter/half/three-quarter character blocks as 'pixels' and positioning them within each character in the correct place. Very well done.
Looks like a very good shooter. The difficulty level seems nicely judged.
It probably took me about 8-10 goes to finish it, but you can still get better scores by having more lives left, being quicker, etc.
Shouldn't this be called Petalaga?
Yeah, I think it is more like Galaga.
This looks good and has the intensity of the arcade game. Beefy sound effects on the VIC20
Vic-20 version is better than c64.
Still good game.
I loved this game as a kid. Dont think I ever completed a level though.
Hey I wrote this game. Thanks for keeping the memory alive!
I remember my friend had a Spectrum. He used to jokingly make fun of me and my Vic 20. One day he came round and played this....He was impressed!
The ZX81 and Vic-20 came out in 1981, then the Spectrum and C64 came out in 82, so the Vic was impressive at the time. It beat the Spectrum on several things, like the keyboard, disk drives, printers, sound, and sometimes graphics (depending on the game). The main problem was the lack of built-in RAM, and screen resolution.
This is almost unbelievable. You dont fell that anything is missing from the c64 original, along with smooth scrolling and metalic background graphics effect.
necronom, cool content keep it up dude
Alaska
Man, this is a REAL unusual version of GORF! Ground based and with slants on the original stages. Totally wacky!
Yeah, missing the 'Galaxians' level (as some ports did), and the last level is quite different. The Vic-20 version is better, and more similar to the arcade one. It's actually set in space for a start!
This is a pretty poor version. Quite stilted movement, missing levels and Laser Attack ships hardly moving. VIC20 smashed it.
