Gridrunner - Commodore PET 4032 - Real Hardware
A modern PET version of Jeff Minter's Vic-20 game (which was also released on several other platforms).
This one is released by Milasoft: milasoft64.itch.io/gridrunner
This also allows joystick controls, which would be much easier, but I don't have an adapter for that, so it's the numpad to move and 'A' to shoot.
It's a great version, and if you look at it being played on the C64, this one is very similar.
With it being set on a grid it suits the PET very well. And the PETSCII graphics work perfectly for it.

PETSCII Wizard of Wor - Commodore PET 4032 - Real Hardware
มุมมอง 26928 วันที่ผ่านมา
A 2024 version of the arcade game Wizard of Wor. It's quite similar to the original, and is really good as a single player. I haven't played a proper two player game on it yet, but I expect that will be even better. The keys are a bit odd, but that's to avoid conflicts with key presses on a two player game. You can get it from ko-ko74.itch.io/petscii-wizard-of-wor-c64-version

I don't think I played this when it came out in the arcades, but I did play Drelbs which came out a couple of years later, which was similar with the rotating doors. This version doesn't have as many doors, but isn't bad at all. It has an invisible maze on level 4, but apart from that each level is the same. The enemies each have their own way of moving, so you can plan your moves sometimes, an...
PETSCII Kong - Commodore PET 4032 - Real Hardware

You can never have too many Donkey Kong clones! Well, actually I've never been much of a fan of it, so you can have too many, but I liked this one. This is also one that's been enhanced for a joystick. It has the usual four screens, and hammers to pickup where you'd expect. A good version I think, but I always seem to like clones of it better than the real thing. Maybe it's because they are eas...

This is a great shooter, obviously inspired by Galaxian but simpler. There are several different attack ships with different types of weapons (some aim at you, others split into a shower of deadly bombs). It has 20 levels in total, and this enhanced version has joystick control, though the PET is one of the only computers I can't currently use a joystick on (I'd need an adapter). Highly recomme...
Frankenstein 2000 (v1 and Remix) - BBC Model B - Real Hardware
มุมมอง 100หลายเดือนก่อน
This is pretty much the film "Fantastic Voyage", except it's Frankenstein's Monster instead of Donald Pleasence. You are shrunk and injected into the monster and have to defeat lots of bizarre things, like frogs, cigarette packets, and fried eggs (I'm not making this up) that are floating about in him. After the brain level it starts again. There are two versions of this. The original version 1...

One of my favourite C64 games was brought to the BBC Micro with impressive results. This is probably the second best version. It actually came out on the Atari ST (though not the Amiga), and looked almost exactly like the C64, but ran much slower. I don't know if that's because all the videos I've seen are showing an NTSC version for some reason. I'd say this is harder than the C64 original, as...

Not the one you are probably thinking of, but another one from 1988, spelt with a 'Z' this time. You run or fly to the right shooting enemies. Each level is about 10 screens long, and you can collect different weapons and energy pickups. There are two notable things about this. The first is that you can play as a simultaneous two player game, and the second thing is that once you die you can st...

A platform game with four screens of changing difficulty. From the instructions: "Your ship has to make an emergency landing to pick up tools, water, fuel rods and oxygen. On each screen are 6 items to collect. When you've got them all, return to your ship." You can change the screens you play, difficulty, and view the high scores on the main title screen. It also had a colour or black and whit...
Looney Lift - BBC Model B - Real Hardware

You control the lift in a hotel and need to take the guests to the ground floor. If they make it all the way to the ground floor themselves they will complain, and if you let a bag fall off the conveyor belt they will also complain. Three complaints and it's game over. You can move your lift up and down the lift shaft, and also make the guests jump to avoid holes in the floor, which will stop t...
Star Clash - BBC Model B - Real Hardware
มุมมอง 28หลายเดือนก่อน
This managed to rip-off Elite and Kraftwerk's The Model at the same time! It's the space combat part of Elite (no trading, etc.), and has also taken a lot of the basic screen layout from it, with the high res monochrome top half, then the split resolution using a different mode at the bottom for the colours. Also the famous radar display, but they did it badly, as there are no poles on the ship...
Kourtyard - BBC Model B - Real Hardware

This could have been better. All the hard work had been done, but it just messed up a few basic things. It's a push scroll game where you can move about, but when you get to the edge it scrolls. Normally this would be when you still have plenty of view of what's on that particular side, but for some reason it only scrolls when you are almost up against the edge, so you have no warning of what y...
The Sting - BBC Model B - Real Hardware

You control a bear and have to collect the fruit and flowers, then rescue the cub. Avoid the bee and the mushrooms. Collecting the spray will stop the bee for a while. There are 5 main screens, then they repeat. It gradually gets harder with each set of screens (more logs to get in the way, and mushrooms).
Bird Strike - BBC Model B - Longplay - Real Hardware
มุมมอง 552 หลายเดือนก่อน
The aim is to shoot down the planes. Hitting the wing will launch a bird that gives you a musical note (the usual 80's game logic right there) for a bonus, but the main aim is to hit the planes in the middle to destroy them. There are four different types of plane, then it loops back to the first one. I thought I'd show a decent go, but I managed to crash the game with my awsomeness! I played t...
Jump Jet (Doctor Soft) - BBC Model B - Real Hardware

Another Harrier Jump Jet game. I played this one longer than it probably deserved. It has really bad collision detection (sometimes hitting smoke or trees kills you, and other times it doesn't) and it's quite difficult, but I do like it. Your mission is to get to the aircraft carrier to the East, though I only managed to get to the sea this once. Shooting the tanks is quite hard, and they rando...

It's here, with other versions: ko-ko74.itch.io/wizard-of-wor-for-the-commodore-pet
I never learned how to use those rotating doors. Pac-Man's power pellet system was pretty easy to "get". And invisible mazes? Yeah I'm doomed.

This sort of semigraphics resolution was commonly used in TRS-80 Model I/III games. A lot of these games could have been ported between PET and TRS-80, but for some reason few ever were.
I don't know much about the TRS-80, but looking at some pics of games for it, they look very similar.
There's been no way to remove the Petscii softsprite masks but even so the result is absolutely magnificent 😮
The PET had no modifiable chars and no sprites. The coder of this game is a mad genius, full-stop.
Indeed. All using the quarter/half/three-quarter character blocks as 'pixels' and positioning them within each character in the correct place. Very well done.
Looks like a very good shooter. The difficulty level seems nicely judged.
It probably took me about 8-10 goes to finish it, but you can still get better scores by having more lives left, being quicker, etc.
Shouldn't this be called Petalaga?
Yeah, I think it is more like Galaga.
This looks good and has the intensity of the arcade game. Beefy sound effects on the VIC20
Vic-20 version is better than c64.
Still good game.
I loved this game as a kid. Dont think I ever completed a level though.
Hey I wrote this game. Thanks for keeping the memory alive!
I remember my friend had a Spectrum. He used to jokingly make fun of me and my Vic 20. One day he came round and played this....He was impressed!
The ZX81 and Vic-20 came out in 1981, then the Spectrum and C64 came out in 82, so the Vic was impressive at the time. It beat the Spectrum on several things, like the keyboard, disk drives, printers, sound, and sometimes graphics (depending on the game). The main problem was the lack of built-in RAM, and screen resolution.
This is almost unbelievable. You dont fell that anything is missing from the c64 original, along with smooth scrolling and metalic background graphics effect.
necronom, cool content keep it up dude
Alaska
Man, this is a REAL unusual version of GORF! Ground based and with slants on the original stages. Totally wacky!
Yeah, missing the 'Galaxians' level (as some ports did), and the last level is quite different. The Vic-20 version is better, and more similar to the arcade one. It's actually set in space for a start!
This is a pretty poor version. Quite stilted movement, missing levels and Laser Attack ships hardly moving. VIC20 smashed it.
It sounds like mg42 is going off or affectionately known as Hitler's buzz saw.
I absolutely loved this. Played the hell out of it. I had a top score of 80odd thousand, which is about 200 loops of all the waves. I was convinced it was a world best lol. I was about 9 at the time. All downhill since then lol :D This, and Omega Race were top quality.
I run into pits in this version more the the c64 version.
Thanks for putting up this video! Really gives out what playing it on the original hardware feels like.
Is there a PC version of this out there??? Our vic 20 and the game went bye bye 30 or 40 years ago.
Not that I'm aware of, but you could run it on a PC using an emulator, like VICE.
When I played it as a kid, my sub ran aground and I couldn't get out of it. Was there a way?
On our TV screen, dad drew a line 2" long, SLIGHT CURVE to it..... So we jnew when to fire torpedoes.
Good work. Reminds me of Cauldron 2.
Thanks. Yeah, a bit like C2 with the castle side view gameplay, though I couldn't get very far with that one even though I bought it for the C64 and was determined to like it. I loved the graphics and music though.
@@necronom It was waaay too hard. Me and my brother used cheats back in the day, admittedly. But who didn't with some of these games?
Crazy Kong??
Definitely one for the fast twitch nerve endings.
Bonus time is 60/ 6000
I mean 70/7000
0:02 this game is like classic kong atari homebrew
Together it's all 250m!
Too many compromises.
Interesting that you found this game! I am the author, and I didn't know it had spread outside my own bubble. I'm curious where you found it! I did put it on gitlab many years ago (under Rhialto/intruder -- links don't seem to work here) and this version has the exact same dates tamp. Maybe somebody took it from there. It was never a tipe-in listing in a magazine (unless they never told me, of course). There is also a version for the Commodore 64 and I'm porting to the Mega 65.
I've just had a look and I have no idea where I got it from. All I know is that the original file I got is called "intruder10.prg" and I got it on 17/03/22. I've searched all over and can't find it anywhere. I did download it from a website as it's not in the original games I got with the SD2PET. I got it a few minutes after I got petman.prg, so maybe from the same site if I can find that one.
@@necronom Interesting! I strongly suspect then, that the place you got it from, got it from my gitlab version, because file file name matches exactly.
get back to operations it's game time
GG !!! thank you so much for reminding me of my youth and my early days with computers. I don't think I've ever managed to land the plane. I feel like I'm going to do it again. Best regards from France. 👏👏👍👍
[Game writer here.] Great to see how you solved some of the levels!
אהבתי את חתולי הגרמני הערבי הג'ינג'י לבן שפכטל.
A shameless clone, but it looks fun. (Although I personally prefer the ability to move and shoot in different directions simultaneously.) The skull an crossbone death explosions are a nice touch.
Interesting. This is a pretty interesting gameplay concept; perhaps it would control better with discrete keypresses - each press of the key rotates by one notch (basically, a single "paddle" stroke). I feel like this could work well as part of a multi-style game, like Aztec Challenge or Beach Head.
Yes, if you had to release and re-press to keep turning it would be easier to control.
Fancy meeting you here!
@@Emulous79 Same here!
I'm not super familiar with this title, but for a budget game, you seem to get a ton of stuff! Looks pretty deadly tho!
