I know Andrew is a busy guy so it’s unlikely that he will respond to this comment, however hear goes. I’ve been painting for 45 years and I’m reasonably professionally successful . Watching this has blown my mind ! I’ve just walked around my gallery with a calculator and a tape measure and it’s clear to me now that I’ve been composing my paintings this way completely unconsciously for decades 😃
There are plenty of people who dislike living, so it's pretty understandable there are people miserable and pathetic enough to dislike someone else's creativity and happiness.
I've known about the Golden Ratio for decades but I've never heard it described in such a clear way. Kudos. BTW, looking forward to learning how to make your handy ratio tool. Thank you for yet another awesome insight.
i'm a dentist. I design smiles; working with lab techs to make veneers for upper front teeth. I will implement this idea of the golden proportions to my work. When I was in dental school, I also came across this ratio in teeth, but I didn't understand where the ratio came from. Now I know. MIND BLOWN! Phufffffff!!!!!
Another excellent tutorial, well presented, your excitement is infectious. I have ADHD, the times I have had tutorials on the golden section, it never really clicked beyond a basic '2/5 x 3/5'. It has fully 'clicked' now, Thanks again.
OMG. I told you in a previous post that I am in college for Drawing. They taught me what the golden ratio was, but did not tell us how to actually use it within your art. Thank you so much. I've watched 2 of your videos and have already learned more that the entire year in school. Thank you so much. I will start using the golden ratio in everything I do.
I think we just need a new series on this channel called "The Great Chalkboardventure" with you just teaching us stuff at the chalkboard each week. This is fascinating and super helpful, thank you so much for doing it.
This is a wonderful demonstration of how and why the golden ratio is so pleasing to the eye. I'm not an artist but a photographer; composition is so important whether the viewer realizes it or not. I'll utilize these ideas when composing future images. I now see why some of them "miss the mark." Thanks.
Great explanation! We also all come equiped with our own proportional divider. Stretch out your thumb and first two fingers (like the peace sign +thumb) and you've got yourself a 1:1.618 (roughly) porpotional divider. At 5'9" my first two fingers measure 8 cm apart, and my thumb to first finger measure 13cm, so there's that number series, too!
I just began taking a beginners painting class at a local School of Arts. The instructor was explaining the Golden Rule but I couldn't grasp the concept. After watching your video, I had a epiphany! It's amazing when you look upon nature to see that we indeed live in an orderly world! Thanks for the informative video.
Mind blown. I think what makes this and your other videos so compelling is your excitement at discovery. I pray you never lose that sense of wonder. You are a wonderful teacher, not so much because you are teaching, but because you are sharing your wonder at what you have found. That is what makes great teachers. And your painting shows such skill because you are not striving for "good enough", but for perfection. Thank you!!
I have been learning Painting from You tube for almost 7 years now and these 18 Minutes have been more useful then all those years combined. You are a Jem Andrew and I am Lucky to have found you on You tube..!
This is the only video I have seen which gives such an excellent explanation of how to actually use these measurements in your own artwork. Just brilliant, Andrew. Thank you🥰
I have been confused and totally dumbfounded by the examples and write ups about the Golden Ratio. The spiral, and the other divisions. You are a beautiful teacher and I really loved watching this. In fact I wish my partner could see this video. He's not an artist but he loves maths and he's also a musician which also in some regards uses maths. Thank you for explaining this better than anyone else has, the visualisation, words and enthusiasm are fantastic. Also your painting is near daunting. It has a lot of power in that one Tisch. I feel this one is dramatic, powerful...it is the same feeling you get when you look out or up at a scene in the world, like a mountain range and realize how small and insignificant you are.. Which is a strange feeling. It's beautifully devastating. 👏
One of the best instructional videos I've seen yet. This is a problem I bet 90% of all beginner painters have. Most new painters will look at their piece halfway through, and wonder why it doesn't just look right. This video explains that 100%.
Thank you Andrew, this is by far the best explanation for the golden ratio I've ever seen. I would be very interested in the tutorial for make that caliber, it seems very useful. :)
I've been forcing the ratio into my paintings instead of using the size of the canvas. Using the ratio to determine the size and distance of each main object within the comp. Honestly never thought of dividing up the canvas itself. Awesome!
I'd love to learn how to make the golden ratio tool. I am dyslectic and I was never quite able to comprehend how to utilize the golden ratio, so I've always stuck to the rule of thirds. You explained the golden ratio so well that for the first time I understood. Thank you so much.
Andrew, you are such a natural! That was just the best explanation ever! I have been using this ratio in my composition for years and I teach it too, but I had to show my students your video because you did that so well! Thank you! Looking forward to seeing how to make that tool! Loving your podcasts too, Andrew. Thank you, thank you thank you!
I have been planning my future house to a centimeter, considering the ideal set-up as per feng-shui and what "bad" energy flow nonsense to omit and how to create the harmonious flow through the house, and here I am - writing down the Golden ratio to go through the whole house plan and measure it all. :D
Thank you . I appreciate your videos. Even though I paint in acrylic I tremendously learn from your channel. You have an amazing talent for teaching, but even more in your landscape paintings. Your father taught you well those first steps... Cheers from a musician singer/songwriter from Quebec, Canada exploring art on a canvas. Merci !
I’m gonna use this in an oil painting video soon. the video was way more elaborate than the books I’ve read. Amazing video! Amazing teaching! Amazing information!
Wow! I really learned a lot from this video. I have taken many painting classes and was never told about the golden ratio. You explained it in a way that is very "understandable". Also, your painting is absolutely magnificent.
As much as I would like to say I use the golden ratio, and I mean by actually measuring, I don’t. I do have it in the back of my mind that I have to be aware of placement, composition, and such, but I never really go that far. I do think it is important on how you compose a painting, and these tips are for sure something we all need to at least be familiar with. I was glad that you brought this up as a refresher for some of us, as well as allowing upcoming artists to see the magic of a good painting. Thank you so much for sharing!
You inspire me to be a better artist and a better teacher. Thank you for validating classical painting and drawing techniques with your own painting examples. Your newly completed landscape painting is amazing; absolutely stunning. Who can argue with "beauty is in the eye of the beholder?" This video clearly defines the golden ratio and absolutely exemplifies how to teach it as a foundation in visual composition. As always, your videos are valuable beyond compare. Thank you, Andrew!
You are definitely the painting instructor for people who are already painters! I love all of your videos I’ve seen so far! I thought I was a good painter.. but I know that your teaching will make me better!
Anyone painting is a "painter". What you qualify yourself as being, is relative to how you frame your perception of yourself, but how good you think you are, doesn't necessarily make you "already a painter".
Luka Vujic I love that you asked that. You don’t see many offers of reciprocity in these kinds of videos. Not that I believes others wouldn’t. I’m certain many would, and do try and pay it forward. But I think it’s very kind of you to genuinely ask him. Blessings to you.
I've heard of the golden ratio, however, it boggled my mind with the appropriate way to apply it. Here, you've made it really simple to understand! Thanks!
Very useful information. I was already digging these numbers for years now, Davinci, Michael Angelo and Rafaelo have them a lot in their works. As I got involved in studying Pythagoras' philosophy. they show up in my paintings as well , but after a point I do not go for them, these analogies or close approximations just appear there in my paintings usually. That tool is actually very very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Why did I not know this? I've been out of the design industry 13 years and I am returning and found this!!!! What a gem. This helps me now so much while creating an up to date portfolio. Thank you and thank you Universe 😊 🙏
I have been shouting this to my students since I started teaching. I also use the Harmonic divisions. My work changed after using these compositional division systems. I am not surprised artist don’t know these. They are not taught in any school systems or private teaching studios
Thank you very much for the explanation. Although this video is about painting, as a newbie photographer, I find this video explains a lot about compositional lessons that also applies in photography as well. This makes me realize and understand the importance of the rule of thirds, not just following those lines simply because everyone else told me to do so.
Fascinating information! I watched this video over and over again and the information never gets old. I will use this on my future paintings. Thank you for sharing!
I am so very glad to see you teaching this magnificent principle. I have been teaching this to my students in the studio and in workshops that I teach for several years. I like the way you have applied the golden Ratio to random rectangles. But have you yet explored the related wonders of the “Root Rectangles?” By the way, you have a great guy named Nick Taylor that makes an incredible set of golden ratio calipers in metal.
Marvelous-I’m a mathematician without any painting or photographic skills. Your description of the Golden Ratio is absolutely mathematically rigorous, yet practical in its description without ever needing to derive the ratio itself. Beautifully done. Cheers! Steve K.
WOW! This was 3 yrs ago, and I am just hearing about it now! AND you are the BEST person to teach it! I LOVE your enthusiasm in your explanations, and isn't it amazing how it shows up in everything? I am fascinated! Thank you always for your amazing videos!
OMG! I can’t believe how well you explained this Andrew! Have been struggling to understand the golden ratio & why it matters, now I know. Can’t wait to try it out on a canvas tomorrow. Thank you.. you are a total legend! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Oh my goodness, Andrew, thank you for a really fascinating video! Wow did I learn something and got as excited as you! You are a born natural in front of the camera - excellent job teaching and I should have started with HOLY COW, WHAT A MAGNIFICENT PAINTING!!!! Thank you for your time/effort/expense/Rachel......Team Tisch all the way!
I've watched this several times and taken notes. You are a natural teacher. You painting touched something deep inside of me, it made me feel completely satisfied. It must be your use of the Golden Ratio. Thank you so very much for teaching this.
I learned about the golden ratio at art school, but I never truly understood it. There are no words to express how grateful I am to how you just explained it... I finally get it.... THANK YOU... I am so excited to now apply this to my art work. I would love it if you would take the time to show us how you made your golden ratio ruler please, and thank you again. You rock Andrew! 💜
Such a beautiful painting, the girls you paint look alive and that picture looks like your looking out the window. You are such a wonderful artist. Thanks for teaching us how to paint properly
Andrew this is really cool. I actually never really got into the golden ratio, I might think about it more. Your new landscape is really also quite incredible. I would love to see a video on how you tackled atmospheric effects like god rays, and mist.
I used this method unintentionally in a painting of an alleyway that was somehow spot on. Once I analyzed it, there were golden ratios happening everywhere. Thanks for sharing this.
Andrew, not only are you a masterful artist, but also just as masterful a teacher. I love your videos and your artwork. I have learned so much from you. Thank you!
I have seen many videos on Golden Ratio but havent got any which explain well about its practical use in painting. Andrew, you have done it so beautifully.🔥♥️💯
Awesome explanation Andrew, I have heard of this before however never thought to use it, just usually divide up into thirds. Will definitely give this a try. Now most paintings that use this method size the canvas first for golden rule too which also looks a different ratio than normal. Thanks Andrew.🤯
Thank you for explaining this Andrew. I'm a art teacher and i will tell my student to watch this video. I've heard about the golden ratio but could not really understand it. Now I'm going to use it every time. Thanks.
Andrew, TFS such a clear, concise explanation of the golden ratio with your usual enthusiasm & passion! I always love the fusion of arts & higher math, and while no longer a painter, can now apply the golden ratio to crochet, cross stitch and beaded jewelry designs by intention as well as instinct :-D
Update: I recently crocheted a striped Corner-to-Corner (C2C) baby blanket in 3 colors. But instead of doing a more traditional repeat of equal width stripes, I did stripes based on the Golden Ratio. The baby's mom and her family adore the blanket and repeatedly comment how beautiful it is. Apparently, the Golden Ratio stripes really elevate an otherwise very simple C2C pattern. 😀👍
Hmmm I was studying and drawing sacred geometry shapes, and learning about the Fibonacci sequence, the flower of life and Phi, I stopped for a moment to check my email and there was your video about .... the Golden Ratio.... interesting coincidence !
Andrew Ji( an Indian way of respect, like " Sir") a countless thanks to you for always inciting the goodness of art and being a HUGE inspiration to thousands... especially when we are down and nearly gave up. Can't ever thank you enough for your big heart🙏🙏🙏
HI Andrew, Bravo just to say , you are one of the best Art Teacher on You Tube, there is only one word ( brilliant ) I am one of your fan,Guy Raymond , from Montréal Québec ;
WOW! This is a game changer! I don't know much about how this actually works in painting composition! Gotta use this for my next exhibit! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!
I knew of the Golden Ratio and the 5/8ths rule. Nevertheless, I really loved how Andrew elaborates on it with respect to composition. I did not know about using the secondary lines. Very helpful. What about portraits though? Lastly, I love those calipers! Share your secret or even better, market them and make some money (I'll buy them)! PS on a side note, I have signed up for SkillShare and find it quite useful AND I have begun to play around with the CMYK color palette and am loving the intensity and beauty of the colors. Thank You.
Cheers Robert! I think I'll go ahead and make a video explaining how to make the callipers for free. That way everyone will have access to them. Lot of requests! Glad you enjoy Skillshare, me too! Lots to learn, makes me want to live a few lives just to get it all done!
Coool man! I've heard about this golden ratio hype for years.... but injust can't figure how to mix the formula with my art & design. Until i stumbled upon this video!! Thanks for your clear explanations... this is enlightening. And i'd like to make my own Golden Ratio Calipers.... to start "investigating" all the ratios that is hidden in plain sight! Haha! Once again! Kudos to u & goodluck on your endavors!
THANK YOU! You finally solved the golden ratio riddle for me, because I kept trying around but never getting this real divide / never knew how this thing works in general ... Now that you explained how to calculate this I can finally use it! This was so helpful, thank you so much!
I don't think I ever went to art school until just Now! That couldn't have been explained or demonstrated any clearer. Exceptional! Thank You Andrew. Be Safe.
You are just suuuuuuperb, I have seen around 20+ videos for golden ratio, this the best explanation , specific , easy to understand. The anchor/ teacher is very brilliant,
Really enjoyed this, as I do all your tutorials. Earlier I had mentioned to my husband that you paint like Constable, and then you shared the application of the Golden Ratio to one of his paintings...
Great video Andrew! Evidence of God’s design in nature Rom 1. “Mathematics is the language by which God created the universe” -Galileo I first discovered the golden ratio years ago watching an old Disney classic titled, “Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land”
Thank you! I have had questions about this subject for years!! And you gave me more answers than i had questions for! This is an extraordinary demonstration! Thank you!
Golden ratio has fascinated me for ages and have used it for my horse paintings and sketches. I have a Pinterest collection of images, shells and even tree branches that all demostrate it. Weirdly, I never consciously placed it in my landscape art. This occurs right through the entire universe to the quantum level - so we are truly in this ratios form. I am heading to my studio to measure - my guess is I have unconsciously got it pretty close. Thanks for all your great videos. I am a new fan but I will be going through your entire collection!
The "Golden Ratio" was burned into me early when I started photography and it's always been my "How to frame this shot". However, when I used the thirds grid on my shots I found myself ever so slightly drifting the focal points slightly outside, inside, above or below the cross points. Now I understand why. I think I had been trying to make it "Symmetrical" yet "Natural" at the same time. Thanks a lot for this video.
Would it be OK with you if I moved there and lived in your backyard in a tent and studied with you for the next 4 to 8 years like the masters did in the past ? 😂🤪 JK ! I wish though !
Mind blown!!!!! I'm new to your videos, and I just had to let you know that you have forever changed the way I will compose anything. I'm trained in graphic design, and I'm embarrassed to say that I've never heard of the "golden ratio", so thank you!!!
That golden ratio is amazing! I don't recall ever hearing of that before. The way that you explained it, along with the examples of it's use made it really exciting! I can't wait to try it out! Thank you so much!
Hi. Andrew. I know what you mean all, because I've studied mathematics in university. But, after I've travelled Europe including Italy Vatican, and I've watched Michealangelo's Pieta which made me cried, coz I moved my heart to start to major in fine art. I did so many sketches, and I've studied golden ratio with a sea shell, human body and infinite beauty of Fibonacci numbers. But, in my memory I nearly forgot about this golden ratio, but now I remembered! I really respect your true virtue about your artwork, and I respect again that you don't mind amateur learn your golden ratio. Thank you so much that you're an open minded person. I appreciate it!
Listening to you and watching the draw on the board about the Golden Ratio I could perfectly pictured one of your paintings, The Winter Landscape you did a wonderful tutorial? The mist, the trees and the sheep...and say that´s a perfect Golden Ratio. Thank you so much for your generosity sharing with us, for your enthusiasm that is contagious.
The best explanation I've seen so far especially when it comes to how one can apply the golden ratio to existing paintings. I'm currently struggling to work out the best possible composition for a cloudscape that I've been working on for two months already and will certainly use these principles to figure out where to place the focal points. Well done Andrew and thanks for your many great videos 👍💕!!
I know Andrew is a busy guy so it’s unlikely that he will respond to this comment, however hear goes.

I’ve just walked around my gallery with a calculator and a tape measure and it’s clear to me now that I’ve been composing my paintings this way completely unconsciously for decades 😃
The artist is sharing HIS technique with us... why the HELL would anyone dislike the video????
Jealousy!!
His work is gold 🌟
Lol wait... They just couldn't understand the math and for too bored too absorbe the genius 😅 bunch of slow pokes
There are plenty of people who dislike living, so it's pretty understandable there are people miserable and pathetic enough to dislike someone else's creativity and happiness.

contagious.
Great explanation! We also all come equiped with our own proportional divider. I'm literally amazed by my thumb and fingers right now.

STOP freaking me out! I got it! Jeez!
Beautiful explanation.... fantastic...
Amazing!

Your work, both on canvas and your teaching skills in this videos are 100% amazing! Thank you for sharing this!
Crazy how intuitive this is. I just analyzed my most recent sketch, and bam, the horizon is exactly on the ratio.
Excellent, excellent Break Down. Best explanation of the Golden Ratio I’ve yet to see. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Finally, someone talking sense about art and breaking down these ratios in a language I can understand.
15:30 "I don't know about you...but, for me, this works." No kidding! That painting is AMAZING. I love your understatement.
One of the best instructional videos I've seen yet. This is a problem I bet 90% of all beginner painters have. Most new painters will look at their piece halfway through, and wonder why it doesn't just look right. This video explains that 100%.

Also known as "God's fingerprint". By the way, your work is BEAUTIFUL!!!
@@DrWhom What is "nonsense"?
Absolutely!
Funny thing about it is it follows suite with us living in a simulation too. Simply coding being repeated in everything.
Yes, shows you there is a Creator/Designer of everything in nature and universe.
Why God....? Just Numbers

Cheers Angela! I like that: "Team Tisch". We should get T-shirts made... too much? haha!
Count me in, Andrew, first in line for those t-shirts!!😉
I've watched this several times and taken notes. You are a natural teacher. You painting touched something deep inside of me, it made me feel completely satisfied. It must be your use of the Golden Ratio. Thank you so very much for teaching this.
Great explanation! Looking fwd to learning how you made that golden compass!
Great job, please do a video on making the caliber
Yes, some use a golden ratio from the outset, but this can be applied to any rectangle! Cheers for the comment Leigh! Always a pleasure mate.
Wowwwww thank you sooooooo much
Hmmm I was studying and drawing sacred geometry shapes, and learning about the Fibonacci sequence, the flower of life and Phi, I stopped for a moment to check my email and there was your video about .... the Golden Ratio.... interesting coincidence !
Fantastic as always! You are one of THE BEST artists of our time! Not to mention your incredible teaching skills!
Please please how can we make one of those golden ratio measuring device? It’s fabulous! Thank you for sharing 😃
This has to be one of the most informative videos I've ever watched. Thank you Andrew.
Andrew Ji( an Indian way of respect, like " Sir") a countless thanks to you for always inciting the goodness of art and being a HUGE inspiration to thousands... especially when we are down and nearly gave up. Can't ever thank you enough for your big heart🙏🙏🙏
HI Andrew, Bravo just to say , you are one of the best Art Teacher on You Tube, there is only one word ( brilliant ) I am one of your fan,Guy Raymond , from Montréal Québec ;
Hi very well explained thank you. Looking forward to learning how you made the ratio calipers 😊
@@AndrewTischlerArt I, too, would be interested in how this works for portraits.... must pull out my Sergeant books ;)
@@AndrewTischlerArt have you made a video explaining how to make them yet?
At last someone that explained clearly how to apply the Golden ratio in our compositions! Thank you very much Andrew!
God: I have created the heavens and the earth to create mystery and magic for all mankind.
Andrew: Hold my brush, imma make a tool for that.
🤟😁
lol
Andrew: " I don't know about you, but for me, it 'works' "
Me picking my jaw from the floor : "Are you sure it's a painting??"
THANK YOU! You finally solved the golden ratio riddle for me, because I kept trying around but never getting this real divide / never knew how this thing works in general ... Now that you explained how to calculate this I can finally use it! This was so helpful, thank you so much!
Great video, Andrew! And yes, Fibonacci tells it all. Lots of thanks for reminding me!
Is that a new Italian vegtabile?
@@norskviking9410 Neither new, nor a vegetable: an Italian mathematician who lived about 800 yrs ago.
I don't think I ever went to art school until just Now! That couldn't have been explained or demonstrated any clearer. Exceptional! Thank You Andrew. Be Safe.
I love how you showed a lot of examples of the golden ratio being used. Your painting is incredible!!!
You are just suuuuuuperb, I have seen around 20+ videos for golden ratio, this the best explanation , specific , easy to understand. The anchor/ teacher is very brilliant,
Golden ratios should be thought of as a suggestion and not a "secret" or "rule". Remember, any and all compositions are subjective.
I've heard and read about the golden ratio but did not understand. This presentation made it so much clearer. Thank you Andrew.
you can setup your guides in photoshop to be % based. so your guides will be to 1.618 and you'd always have the ration. just a tip!
Really enjoyed this, as I do all your tutorials. Earlier I had mentioned to my husband that you paint like Constable, and then you shared the application of the Golden Ratio to one of his paintings...
Great video Andrew!
Evidence of God’s design in nature Rom 1. “Mathematics is the language by which God created the universe” -Galileo
I first discovered the golden ratio years ago watching an old Disney classic titled, “Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land”
Thank you!
I have had questions about this subject for years!! And you gave me more answers than i had questions for! This is an extraordinary demonstration! Thank you!
1:1.618 is the signature of The Creator. ...a calling card of sorts.
How do you make that golden ratio measuring tool? I don't see it in any of your videos.
Theres free plans online. That's where I got my plans. Just look up golden ratio calipers
Me: Yeay new video!
Andrew: "There is a mathematical formula..."
Me: Oh no. :(
Izzan Qistan LOL!! I did the same thing!! 🤣🤣🤣
that's funny...
That golden ratio is amazing! I don't recall ever hearing of that before. The way that you explained it, along with the examples of it's use made it really exciting! I can't wait to try it out! Thank you so much!
10:00 starts explaining how to implement
Hi.
Your like a professor . Super intelligent. That's why you such a great artist. Your work is phenomenal.
Thank you for explaining the Golden Ratio! I have know about it as well, but you explained it in a way that I can use it in my artwork!
