The actual measure that counts is not the whole long arms, but the length from the hinge hole at the top to the tip! That is the total length of your golden ratio. The short length is from the hole at the top to the hole for the 3rd arm and the connecting rod: that is the short length of the golden ratio. The 3rd arm is the same as the long tip to that hole dividing the long arm = long length of the golden ratio. It gets it’s second hole in exactly the short distance of the GR. What you called the connecting rod has the holes also the short length of the GR apart. So when you open the long arms to 90° the four parts form a square with 90° and equal sides! You can calculate these length on several sites on the internet that provide calculators for that! With putting in the „connecting rod“ willy nilly you destroyed the geometry so that your 3 tips will not give you the correct GR.

I think the template shows dimensions from the center of the top hole. If you use the overall length, the ratio changes with the width of the sticks. I made mine from hole to hole and it worked out great. You can tape all 4 pieces together and drill them 130 apart. Then cut to length from top hole to point. Good video. Thanks.

I came here to learn how to make one of these calipers in watching your construction of one the problem we were having with finding where the two mid hinges go, it seems to me they are both parallel with the opposite leg the triangle. I'll find out in a minute when I build mine. Thank you 4 your excellent presentation

Also, if anyone's wondering, the way the calipers are calibrated using the star checks out mathematically and probably, given the accumulation of errors one can make, the best way to make these that i have seen so far. I would place the pin in the join between the two largest outer pieces first, the align the middle sized piece, then pin it. then align the pin to the smallest piece on the longest piece at exactly the same length as the pin between the long piece and the middle sized piece. pin that. then align everything to the star again to correctlr place the last pin joining the middle sized and short piece.

As an artist I am facinated with the golden ratio. As soon as you gave the lengths of the arms I suspected they conformed to the golden ratio near enough, 340/210=1.619 and 210/130=1.615. I guess any lenght arms would do as long as they conformed to the ratio. I'm off to make me some calipers.

Regarding placement of the holes: Let's call the 2 outer arms 'A1' and 'A2'. They are both the same size and the largest. The 'medium' sized arm will be 'B'. The smallest arm will be 'C'.
Step 1. Make the 2 'A's the same size, with matching pointed tips; (I use the middle of the arm). The length of these 'A' can be of whatever choosing, and whatever material. (I like brass plate) These 2 'A's will be joined later with a brad/rivet, etc. at a hole near the top. This hole can be located at whatever one's choosing location. It will be called the 'A top pivot hole'.
Step 2. Put the 2 'A's together, punch the top hole with awl/punch/ then drill the hole through both A arms at same time. Make sure sharp tips are absolutely together/clamped while drilling first hole. (This hole can be anywhere near the top of both A pieces.)
Step 3. Now measure from the middle of this first top pivot hole, to the very tip of the A arm. This distance must be precise. (Metric is so so much easier to use here). Take this number and multiply it by .618. That result is the distance you will now measure from the sharp tip, up towards the top of the A arm.
Step 4. Mark that spot w/awl/punch/etc. on the A arm.
Step 5. Drill a hole centered on that spot, through both of A arms. (This hole I refer to as the '61.8 hole of A'.)
(Do not rivet the pieces together now, but at end of drilling process of all arms. )
Step 6. Now we need to make the B arm. The B arm will need to have 2 holes, and a sharp tip. It will need to be longer than A's distance from A sharp tip, to A's 61.8 hole. You can merely lay the A arm onto B with B tip matching up with A tip,, and drill through the A's 61.8% hole, and this will give the top B pivot hole. (so of course B needs to be a bit longer than this distance)
Step 7: Measure B from top pivot hole to tip. Take that result, multiply it by 61.8%, and mark that spot on B from the pivot hole towards the tip. Mark and drill the hole. That will be the 2nd hole of B, the '61.8% of B' hole.
step 8 : drill the holes for C. Lay either A arm on the C arm. Punch/mark both A holes onto C. Drill the holes on the centerpoint of the marks.
Assemble the device as you shown :)

Seriously, why TF would you write all that when anyone can just "search" it out, do you really think that people are going to try and follow what you wrote, when the very device that they are using to read your indulging in the "sound" of your own voice, can, at the touch of a few keys, present to them an easy and simplified break-down of a "How To....." demonstration with easy to follow steps, for real, there can't be any reason for writing the details of the construction, other than you thinking that you are being impressive, seriously, why TF would anyone try to follow those construction details you wrote, why would they do that to themselves ??

The four common length pivot points determine the rest of the measurements. If P = the distance between them then P*1.618 is the length of the long legs BELOW the lower pivot point and P/1.618 is the length of the short leg BELOW the lower pivot point.

You don’t need the shortest one. Cut the two Long ones then the two shorter ones, the mark the holes. As you get ready to put in the second shorter leg, cut it off below the hole and attach it to the other small leg.OR, use your pentagram, and place the second smaller leg exactly in it, and when all parts are together, THEN cut off the controlling arm.

The reason you couldn't find the right measurement is because there isn't one. The golden mean is a proportion, not a measure. If you used measure to approximate the lengths, it is not an accurate tool. You need to use calipers to replicate the proportions, not a ruler. Proportion not measure! That is how the ancients did it and why we can't design things well now a days. Three tools are needed, a straightedge, a compass and a pair of calipers. No ruler or measure of any kind necessary or even helpful other than to set the scale.
