  • In this video I show you how to build a nice little Royal Air Force Tornado GR.1 in the famous "Mig Eater" livery in 1/144 scale. The original plane took part in Operation Granby during the First Gulf War in 1990/1991 and was stationed at Tabuk Airbase, Saudi Arabia.
I recently found a cheap Academy Tornado kit in my stash, and when I opened it I saw it actually included the "Mig Eater" decals and not the regular RAF decals shown on the box. This was a nice surprise, and since I already built a 1/72 scale version of "Mig Eater" I immediately decided to buy another kit and build a small 1/144 version of it. I ordered the Revell 1/144 Tornado ECR which at currently 4.99 Euros is a real bargain! Of course I’d rather wanted a genuine GR.1 kit but in order to keep the costs down I went for this kit. I know that some parts and details are not accurate to the GR.1 variant so please bear with me. The build was basically just intended to be another small tribute to the crews and planes that flew extremely dangerous missions in the Gulf War thirty years ago.
Let me know what you think of this build. Your comments and opinions are highly appreciated. Please bear in mind I am not a professional modeler, I just build these models for fun and relaxation and to help regain my mental and physical health.

Thank you very much, glad you liked the video! 🙂 I like this small scale a lot, also have a couple more 1/144 kits in my stash (F-14A, F-15E etc.). KC-135 is very nice, would also love an E-3 Sentry in 1/144 (I have the Heller 1/72 kit but this is huge). Thanks for watching! Cheers, Oliver/RWO

A few days ago, my wife surprised me. She bought me a Revell Tornado kit. Looking forward to starting putting the parts together. As a boy I assembled a Sherman tank, a Yamamoto super destroyer and a sailing ship Myflower. I also had an Apache helicopter but it fell and broke. I will assemble the tornado and put it in a transparent plastic box that I will make myself. I'm almost 62 years old and I'm bedridden. (for now😃)
but this kind of "game" is not for impatient young people.

Those 2 missiles look like AGM-45 Shrike missiles. These are Anti-Radiation Missiled, specifically used to tager enemy surface to air radar, which fits with the ECR role of the kit.
Since the model you're building is intended to be the GR.1, those missiles would not be carried.

I couldn't say for certain that RAF Tornados didn't use anti-radiation missiles but most photos of them during that period show them using a pair of Paceway laser guided bombs. And the actual aircraft "Mig Eater" is best known for a strike using a Hunting JP233 submunitions dispenser. So far as I know the JP233 has never been released in 1/144 although there may be some 3d printing aftermarket firms that sell them. I had to carve mine from laminated sheet styrene!

Excellent build of the Revell Tornado. I have to confess I was not a big fan of the desert scheme for the Tornado but this really pops.
My preferred scheme is the wrap around grey/green scheme. I have built quite a few of the Revell and Dragon releases although the Ace kit has the full RAF markings set.
Did you ever build the Academy model to see what you could make of it?

    • @jeromepethrick2392

That is a Tornado Gr1. They never had HARM missiles. It should have been Paveways. If you you look closely there are Paveway bomb markings on the nose of the jet. GR 4s flew with ALARM missiles which are a different shape but that was after Gulf War 1.

18:02 Those missiles were correct to the ECR version, hence you do a GR1, the correct armament should be 1000GP iron bombs or Paveway LGB bombs

Being a 144 man myself, I really enjoyed this build, but the desert colour seems waaaay off the salmon pink the RAF Tonkas went to war in? Also, does anyone on here know where I can source 144-scale 1980s RAF Germany Tornado markings? Any of the RAFG Tonka squadrons. Revell did a 144 RAF Tornado kit, but this was long-since discontinued. Any assistance would be appreciated. Cheers from Cape Town, South Africa.

    • @TheModelorian
      @TheModelorian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Wo aus DE kommst du her? Schöne Grüße!!!

Nice kit build, unfortunately the weapons load out is wrong, the missiles appear to be AGM-88’s which were carried by the Tornado ECR, I don’t believe the U.K. ever used this type of missile, RAF Tornado’s would have carried the BAE ALARM missiles.

    • @RWOModels

Yes, the Academy 1/144 Tornado kit is a pretty low quality kit with few details, bad fit and a strange looking fuselage shape. It actually looks more like a toy. It was very cheap though, so I just ordered it. :)
