@@JamesPatrickBurke yes you really succeeded in establishing a film look (cinematic ☺) something I'm striving for. I ill def look into the FPE lut you mentioned in the comments. Looking forward for more content from you ❤
Amazing Quality Men! Seriously one of the best examples of what the S5 is capable of. I do wonder, in what format do you export it for youtube? Usually I see way more compression when im searching for S5 footage.
TH-cam has many "good videos" but your sir are among the greats! I can tell you're an individual that pays attention to detail, composition, lighting and also getting it right in camera instead of "fixing in post" a common mistake alot of people make, I truly appreciate that! So I just got my hands on the Lumix S5 (after alot of research), I know different lenses produce different looks and feels, for example these Canon FDs you use are simply brilliant at producing "cinematic images" ofc if you know how to use them properly which you seem to be a master at. My question is as a new S5 shooter I know I need to learn the camera a ton still but did you shoot that 4:3 aspect ratio internally or created it externally? I also just got the Atomos Ninja V so I'm excited to test out the ProRes Raw, any feedback on these would be highly appreciated, please keep up the amazing work!! It's very inspiring seeing these things which proves you don't need to have the most expensive gear to produce extremely high quality & professional work as you have displayed here, subbing for sure!
When shooting Prores Raw with the S5 you can not shoot in 4:3 internally. so that was done in Davinci. But it allows me to reframe a little bit so I kind of like doing it in post. Prores Raw is taxing on a computer and you need to convert to Prores 4444 to use Davinci Resolve, which is what I use. Its actually not that bad in FCPX to edit Prores Raw. I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully I can make something new soon. Good luck with your new gear.
They are all nFDs. Not a perfect set but you don’t buy an old lens set for perfection, it’s more for character. Thanks for watching! None of my FD lenses are anything more than the standard 2.8s 24,28, a f2 35mm, f1.4 50mm and 85mm 1.8, that’s the core then I have a 135 f3.5 and an f4 70-210 macro so I have a large focal range but it wasn’t back breaking to buy when I bought. Thanks again for watching!
@@JamesPatrickBurke Well they say it's not the gear, it's the way you use it. You have some fantastic images, much appreciated. Would love to know how you do your editing and colouring in future.
@@damiendehorn6350 I’m contemplating a tutorial/screen capture kind of thing. But I’m such a refiner sometimes I get lost in the editing/color grading. But I’ll probably put something together as people have been asking
@@JamesPatrickBurke Look forward to seeing it soon, thanks again for your work. Just bought a S5 and BS1H to see what I can do with my vintage Takumars, nFD's, Pentax M/K's, Minoltas and Tomiokas.
This is really terrific. Fellow s1/s5/FD shooter here. Did you use Juan Melara's film unlimited or something else? I've used his alexa p4k luts before with the pocket and have even tried them on my s1 footage with some success. Couple of years in, mind still blown at what the Lumix can do, s1/s5 probably the most underrated option out there at the moment for IQ and dynamic range! Well done!
I did not upgrade to the film unlimited package yet but it seems they are tweaked versions of what I bought several years ago. Interested to see what is different myself. The S series has the best still frame IQ out there. I would love better rolling shutter and IBIS in my S5 as well as full frame 60p for slow mo work. Thanks for watching
Just more post flexibility and a larger image size which when reduced to 4k really cleans up and is crisp. Technically no more dynamic range but can be pushed further in post. A heavier load on the computer tho. It just has something special about it. I only use it for stuff like this. A large project at this point would be too much to handle. The file sizes and such. Thanks for watching
My friend. Which cable did you use to enable the 6k prores raw? did you buy the atomos cable or the Zilr? did you use an micro to full hdmi adapter also?
Absolutely beautiful James, love your work. Hopefully you can keep creating as you have a lot of talent! Also have an S5 so this is very inspirational. Quick question, what's your grading setup like? Do you use clean feed from Resolve to a dedicated monitor? I'm just getting into colour grading and wondering if I should add a new monitor to add to my setup, or whether a single calibrated computer monitor would do for now.
Thank you for the kind words. I do not have any special set up for grading. I have a a retina iMac at my home workstation and at work it’s simply a two monitor setup with one being used as full screen viewer. I don’t have a great way to get reference colors. I do most of it by feel. I tend to look at different graded clips on different monitors to see how they look in different places. Best I can do without a clean feed out which seems so ‘old school’ in a way and something I think needs to change. I do get color and gamma shifts in certain instances so I’m not entirely happy with it but I think the final product has gotten close to the monitored look and that’s good enough for me. Keep shooting and grading and you can only improve. I know I still am.
@@JamesPatrickBurke Thanks so much for the reply, really appreciate it. All your videos look fantastic on everything I've viewed them on so you're definitely doing something right :)
Great video! I see you used Canon lenses so presumably you used an adaptor of some sort? If so which one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very helpful.
I use old Canon fD lenses so the adaptor is an FD to L mount adapter. It is of the cheap variety. I think it was Fotasy www.amazon.com/Fotasy-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-Adapter/dp/B0113OGVO0?th=1
Cinema quality to be sure, but I found some of the shots looked oversaturated, an almost HDR appearance when shooting into the sun. Would have loved to see this in Anamorphic or at least masked to 2.35:1, but your rationale for the 16mm look explains it. I have been shooting Anamorphic on my S5 lately. Also have the Ninja V but yet to test with the S5 which is a Cinematic Beast. If you have never seen "Days of Heaven" shot by Haskell Wexler, check it out, it will resonate, Nice work LIKED 👍
Thanks for the comments. Was a tough grade. Balancing light and shadow. Sometimes I lift faces too much and it feels unnatural. Such a balancing act. And yes I am a big Terrence Malick fan… in terms of the visual style of his films. Thanks for watching
Need more S5 content. Truly the best S5 has to offer.
