I currently shoot freelance "cinematic" projects. I love color grading and enjoy watching films.
Gear: Panasonic S5, Atomos Ninja V, Canon FD Lenses, iMac, FCPX, Davinci Resolve.

Harvest's End: Panasonic S5 + Atomos Ninja V ProRes Raw
This video was shot a few weeks ago over two evenings during the last week of summer.
No planning or purpose other than knowing I wanted to shoot toward sunset and in a rural setting.
I was aiming for more of a 16mm feel to the footage, and not as polished as my other videos. Was also trying a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of my usual widescreen presentation.
Camera: Panasonic S5
Lenses: Canon FD 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, 135, 70-210mm
Atomos Ninja V Monitor & Recorder
Shot using ProRes Raw
Editing Workflow: ProRes Raw imported into FCPX, Basic White Balance Then exported to ProRes 4444. Imported into Davinci Resolve where edit and color grading was done. I use a combination of a filmic LUT (Check out Juan Melara online) and tweaks to get this look. Also used Neat Video on all shots...and added some 16mm grain.
Any questions feel free to ask in the comments.
Enjoy!

Before The Melt: Panasonic S5 + Atomos Ninja V ProRes Raw

This video was shot a few days after a snow storm around my house. No planning or purpose, just a collection of shots to test the gear. I think the camera combined with a rich film grade and the vintage lenses is a perfect pairing. First Panasonic S5 ProRes Raw Video with Atomos Ninja V
มุมมอง 14K4 ปีที่แล้ว
My first attempt at shooting with the Panasonic S5 & Atomos Ninja V with RAW settings. Just a fun day shoot around the house with my little actresses. A little more processing in post than V-Log internal but the range of options and flexibility is awesome. Brought clips into Final Cut. Did Basic ISO/White Balance Work then exported in Apple Pro Res 4444 and color graded in Davinci Resolve. Used...
2 Weeks With The Panasonic S5
มุมมอง 4.5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Just some run and gun fun with the Panasonic S5. Have only had the camera for about two weeks. No set ups here, just trying to get a feel for the camera... Enjoy! Lenses: Canon FD 50mm Rokinon 14mm Lumix 20-60mm All shot in V-Log Edited and Color Graded In Davinci Resolve
Need more S5 content. Truly the best S5 has to offer.
That framing on point
My friend. Which cable did you use to enable the 6k prores raw? did you buy the atomos cable or the Zilr? did you use an micro to full hdmi adapter also?
Makin' any more s5 vids????? Love what you got
I would love to. Just have been very busy. Maybe this summer... Thanks for watching
I would really like to know how you color grade
I’m getting a very beautiful film look
Beautiful.
Could you have achieved the same picture qualitY shooting V Log and grading appropriately ? Just wondering
I am thinking of buying a new "cinema" camera and I always come back to your videos. I love your footage and I thinking of buying either the pocket 4k or the lumix s5 + atomos to record RAW. But I can't decide. Are the files huge?
Круто👍
You can share your workflow? editing... Lens...
Bellissimo, complimenti.
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic again, James! Keep shooting please!
Thanks for watching!
More videos! Pleaseee
Thanks for watching! Hopefully soon
Beautiful shots ! And nice grade !
Thanks for watching!
This is really terrific. Fellow s1/s5/FD shooter here. Did you use Juan Melara's film unlimited or something else? I've used his alexa p4k luts before with the pocket and have even tried them on my s1 footage with some success. Couple of years in, mind still blown at what the Lumix can do, s1/s5 probably the most underrated option out there at the moment for IQ and dynamic range! Well done!
I did not upgrade to the film unlimited package yet but it seems they are tweaked versions of what I bought several years ago. Interested to see what is different myself. The S series has the best still frame IQ out there. I would love better rolling shutter and IBIS in my S5 as well as full frame 60p for slow mo work. Thanks for watching
Amazing Quality Men! Seriously one of the best examples of what the S5 is capable of. I do wonder, in what format do you export it for youtube? Usually I see way more compression when im searching for S5 footage.
I export in ProRes 422 in 4k. Takes longer to upload because file size is larger but looks better than h.264 Thanks for watching!
really filmic
Thanks for watching!
what a Beutifull grade... congrats..!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Wow, super niceee film
Thanks for watching
Great video, superb example! Thanks a lot! How does it look compared to internal codec? Any higher dymanic range?
Just more post flexibility and a larger image size which when reduced to 4k really cleans up and is crisp. Technically no more dynamic range but can be pushed further in post. A heavier load on the computer tho. It just has something special about it. I only use it for stuff like this. A large project at this point would be too much to handle. The file sizes and such. Thanks for watching
Cinema quality to be sure, but I found some of the shots looked oversaturated, an almost HDR appearance when shooting into the sun. Would have loved to see this in Anamorphic or at least masked to 2.35:1, but your rationale for the 16mm look explains it. I have been shooting Anamorphic on my S5 lately. Also have the Ninja V but yet to test with the S5 which is a Cinematic Beast. If you have never seen "Days of Heaven" shot by Haskell Wexler, check it out, it will resonate, Nice work LIKED 👍
Thanks for the comments. Was a tough grade. Balancing light and shadow. Sometimes I lift faces too much and it feels unnatural. Such a balancing act. And yes I am a big Terrence Malick fan… in terms of the visual style of his films. Thanks for watching
TH-cam has many "good videos" but your sir are among the greats! I can tell you're an individual that pays attention to detail, composition, lighting and also getting it right in camera instead of "fixing in post" a common mistake alot of people make, I truly appreciate that! So I just got my hands on the Lumix S5 (after alot of research), I know different lenses produce different looks and feels, for example these Canon FDs you use are simply brilliant at producing "cinematic images" ofc if you know how to use them properly which you seem to be a master at. My question is as a new S5 shooter I know I need to learn the camera a ton still but did you shoot that 4:3 aspect ratio internally or created it externally? I also just got the Atomos Ninja V so I'm excited to test out the ProRes Raw, any feedback on these would be highly appreciated, please keep up the amazing work!! It's very inspiring seeing these things which proves you don't need to have the most expensive gear to produce extremely high quality & professional work as you have displayed here, subbing for sure!
When shooting Prores Raw with the S5 you can not shoot in 4:3 internally. so that was done in Davinci. But it allows me to reframe a little bit so I kind of like doing it in post. Prores Raw is taxing on a computer and you need to convert to Prores 4444 to use Davinci Resolve, which is what I use. Its actually not that bad in FCPX to edit Prores Raw. I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully I can make something new soon. Good luck with your new gear.
Lovely work! Some fantastic shots here. Those FDs are something else huh!
Thanks for watching! The combination works well together that is for sure
Stunning imagery 😍. Looking forward to see your workflow
Thanks for watching! Hopefully I can get you a workflow soon
@@JamesPatrickBurke yes you really succeeded in establishing a film look (cinematic ☺) something I'm striving for. I ill def look into the FPE lut you mentioned in the comments. Looking forward for more content from you ❤
Love the work, hope you upload more. Those FD's look incredible, are they nFD's or SSC's?
They are all nFDs. Not a perfect set but you don’t buy an old lens set for perfection, it’s more for character. Thanks for watching! None of my FD lenses are anything more than the standard 2.8s 24,28, a f2 35mm, f1.4 50mm and 85mm 1.8, that’s the core then I have a 135 f3.5 and an f4 70-210 macro so I have a large focal range but it wasn’t back breaking to buy when I bought. Thanks again for watching!
@@JamesPatrickBurke Well they say it's not the gear, it's the way you use it. You have some fantastic images, much appreciated. Would love to know how you do your editing and colouring in future.
@@damiendehorn6350 I’m contemplating a tutorial/screen capture kind of thing. I wouldn’t say I’m formally trained but I’d say I’ve seen so many movies and was a film studies major in college so I feel like some ideas are baked in to what I think looks good. But I’m such a refiner sometimes I get lost in the editing/color grading. But I’ll probably put something together as people have been asking
@@JamesPatrickBurke Look forward to seeing it soon, thanks again for your work. Just bought a S5 and BS1H to see what I can do with my vintage Takumars, nFD's, Pentax M/K's, Minoltas and Tomiokas.
Really nice!✨ I subscribed to your channel! I'm looking forward to next video!🔥
Thanks! Hopefully can shoot something soon!
Absolutely beautiful James, love your work. Hopefully you can keep creating as you have a lot of talent! Also have an S5 so this is very inspirational. Quick question, what's your grading setup like? Do you use clean feed from Resolve to a dedicated monitor? I'm just getting into colour grading and wondering if I should add a new monitor to add to my setup, or whether a single calibrated computer monitor would do for now.
Thank you for the kind words. I do not have any special set up for grading. I have a a retina iMac at my home workstation and at work it’s simply a two monitor setup with one being used as full screen viewer. I don’t have a great way to get reference colors. I do most of it by feel. I tend to look at different graded clips on different monitors to see how they look in different places. Best I can do without a clean feed out which seems so ‘old school’ in a way and something I think needs to change. I do get color and gamma shifts in certain instances so I’m not entirely happy with it but I think the final product has gotten close to the monitored look and that’s good enough for me. Keep shooting and grading and you can only improve. I know I still am.
@@JamesPatrickBurke Thanks so much for the reply, really appreciate it. All your videos look fantastic on everything I've viewed them on so you're definitely doing something right :)
Great video! I see you used Canon lenses so presumably you used an adaptor of some sort? If so which one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very helpful.
I use old Canon fD lenses so the adaptor is an FD to L mount adapter. It is of the cheap variety. I think it was Fotasy www.amazon.com/Fotasy-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-Adapter/dp/B0113OGVO0?th=1
New vid!!!!!!!
Yes ha finally! I hope to be more regular with releasing stuff soon

This footage is AMAZING! I have the S5 and I’m looking to start shooting RAW soon but now I know to find some vintage lenses!
I appreciate the kind words! Go get some vintage glass and get it done!
@@JamesPatrickBurke will do! Where did you get yours?
@@CreatorMelvin I mix of ebay (mostly) some from KEH. Tried to find ones that were in good optical order and was ok with some blemishes on the lenses themselves if the image was clean and the aperture and focus rings worked.
@@JamesPatrickBurke ok awesome! Great tips. Thanks James.
incredible quality. congrats
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
This is fantastic mate!
Thanks! I appreciate that
Hi mate, Great video and Great colours! what ISO are you running at for most of these shots 640-day and 4000-night or do you have a range? thanks mate !
Definitely 640 when I have enough light. Use a variable ND to control brightness and aperture. 4000 for nights is the next best alternative. Thanks for watching!
Awesome footage. Did you use auto iso or one of the base(640/4000). Thanks
I used base isos 640/4000 whenever I could to minimize noise! Thanks
Good cinematography !!
Thanks for watching!!
Awesome. Did you use nd filter? Thanks
Yes a Singh ray variable ND and Polarizer in one. Thanks for watching!
Just bought an S5 as a b-cam and haven't used it much yet, but your footage looks so amazing. Can I ask if you feel there is a genuine difference between recording ProRes raw and just internally? It was only meant to be a B-cam, so I shouldn't fill hard drives unnecessarily, but now I've found myself searching for accessories. Typical!
I think it depends on what your goal is.. Is it absolute best quality without worrying about file size, post process, computing power etc. In order for me to get the quality I like with Raw, I need to use a lot of computing power and file sizes. I denoise these raw clips because they have color noise. The end result is spectacular but it takes more work. I don't shoot anything professionally with the Pro Res raw. To me its really for feature films or short films that quality is top priority and you are thinking about large screen viewing. In every other instance the internal V log makes more sense. Will save time and money and most people won't see a difference. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching
the difference is noticeable between internal and Atomos Prores Raw
There is a difference in Clarity and color depth. I also improved my grading process from this video to the others. But I do enjoy the raw colors in the external recording better. Thanks for watching
@@JamesPatrickBurke Yes, definitely! I'd love to buy a S1/S5 and an Atomos... Full frame raw, it's insane!
I love it ! this FD lenses or Nfd Lenses ?

How do I play raw files back in Windows??? they play in adobe fine PLZ FOR LOVE OF GOD.
Which Canon FDs do you use? (version and f stop)? You really got a nice soft (in a good way) and filmic image (mostly because of the fantastic colour grading), so I'm intrigued in setting up my own set of vintage lenses but was unsure what to get until I saw this video! :D
