Yeah like, at least he is trying to do better. Literally without the Resistance, Ladybug and Cat Noir would've lost in Deflagration and Representation..
I do think that he deserves to know Adrien's identity also and he would definitely help him.. This time however, he would not tell anyone because Adrien is Cat Noir, one of Paris' biggest heroes and also they all have their miraculouses permanently now. Also, since Adrien already knows that Nino is Carapace, it would make it easier for them to work together..

I really liked Nino, but I think Rocketear is by far his worst episode. He completely betrayed his girlfriend's privacy by telling Adrien her secret identity behind her back, than nearly MURDERED HIM as Chat Noir. He could've solved his problems by just talking to Alya, but he thought basically spying on her was easier than actually communicating. Then he tells Marinette their identities again IN A PUBLIC CAFETERIA.
Alya and Nino may share secrets, but he sure can't keep them.

I have to always think about the fact that any time Astruc seems to hear a character is liked more than Marinette, he has to take them out to the back and shoot them to prove Marinette is the best. This is the best way I can explain why every character seems to have episodes where they're acting either OOC or their flaws are magnified unreasonably.
Miraculous is one of the very, very rare fandoms where the source material is probably handled better by the fans than the official writers. Not ALL the fans, but the show half the time feels like one of those ship fics where people like two characters together who already have canon love interests and instead of just having them drift apart, turn the canon love interests into the worst people ever.

I had to pause the video when he said arrogant and stupid is where he draws the line......
He's based on sun wukong. Literally one of the most popular characters in fiction who practically every anime main character is based on, the trait he's missing is being clever. Sun is a idiot compared to the rest of the group but has a high intuition and likes Play pranks. These two together allow him to win even when outmatched and to abuse the power system.
Kim's missing manipulation, intuition and pranks. This would have made him interesting and in the first few episodes he actually has all of said traits. Could've used it to push the plot forward and have him be included in marionettes ... shenanigans..... Yeah let's be honest, it's stalking. However that would be in Character for sun.
      We have:
•Kitsune/Alya(In character to help a friend and have loose morals/ help Marinette)
•Monkey King/Kim(would have loose morals and be in it for the shenanigans)
•Bak... something neko/Chat(Abused cat that just wants to do whatever it wants, get in its way and you meet destruction.... They gave chat Kim's personality instead of this. Recall he was originally meant to be Felix.)

I agree with a lot of this.
But the thing that bugged me in Rocketear was not him revealing the secret identities. I understood why.
However, I am surprised the show acted like he didn’t nearly murder someone. I wanted to see a PTSD storyline or something where he wakes up from having nightmares and the only person he feels like he can talk to is Alya.
Imagine if he finds out Cat Noir is Adrien and he does not know if he can ever make it up to him. Adrien gives him grace, of course, but Nino feels so guilty.
But that well developed arc is outside the bounds of Astruc when it comes to this show.

But what felt different about this one was there was more anger and almost hate behind it. Car noir did choose to make himself more vulnerable because he dis not want to fight his best friend, but Nino was this close to committing murder which felt unlike him.
Maybe because the two rivals at play were friends so I took that to heart. But considering how empathetic Nino is, I am surprised he didn’t feel more distraught over it. It needed more than “i hope we’re good now dude”, if that makes any sense.
Nathaniel was really close to murdering Chloe too and I think that bugged me too.

@@gabrielleduplessis7388 Because they know they're not exactly in control of their actions.
They are under the influence of black magic so to speak. They're not themselves. Hawk Moth specifically takes advantage of them and lets them be guided by their intrusive thoughts. They don't even keep the memories of being akumatized. They're not aware of what they were doing while being villains.
Now, Nino did remember what he did to Cat Noir as he fought off the Akuma on his own and got to keep his memories because of it. However, Nino did express back in Puppeteer 2 that he does not consider akumatized villains as people guilty of their actions but victims of manipulation.

@@kubat4925 forgive me for over analyzing here.
I do understand this aspect, but it does seem they have control over what they want their outfits to look at, the type of weapons they use. Haw Moth does not do that. They do.
And when they switch up from trying to get the miraculous to seeking revenge on whomever, that is the person’r choice to do that and where Hawk moth loses some of his control.
That is why I feel the akumatized people choose what form of violence they use or how far they are willing to take it.
It just starts with Hawkmoth allowing them to do once he takes over.

@@gabrielleduplessis7388 The power of butterfly miraculous allows you to be reborn as a super-being with the powers of your choosing with whatever you feel you need to succeed in your mission.
However no, by the long shot, no one who gets akumatized is actually aware of what they are doing. It's like they're getting drugged or drunk, technically speaking it's still them, but they have no recollection of what they could've done when they weren't sober as it happens. Blacking out is a thing. And akumatization to an extent is a magical possession, but said individuals don't completely lose themselves, they just lose control over what they're doing.
Hawk Moth is capable of controlling his villains by controlling their bodies and even speaking through them but never does so because it would be too dark for miraculous standards but it is a power he possesses as seen in Pixelator, Evillustrator, and Felix. Hawk Moth relies more on persuasion and manipulation in the end than full-on control.
Once again you forget that the show established ever since its very beginning that once people are free of the akumas, they're confused about what happened to them and they have no recollection of memories that happened to them during akumatization unless they voluntarily accepted an Akuma or voluntarily denied it. Otherwise, they always end up with "Ladybug, Cat Noir, what just happened?"

  • @kubat4925
    @kubat4925 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

As someone who grew to dislike Nino, it all comes down to how those flaws were ultimately portrayed.
Now, if he had those flaws back in the beginning and he grew out of them as the show would go on, or they would just die down, there wouldn't be a problem. The problem is that Nino in the first seasons of the show is at his peak and ever since season 4, whenever we do focus more on him, he becomes a cringefest constantly showing us his worst. While it is true that it's the bad writing that is to blame for this, it doesn't change that what happened to Nino is still canon and didn't essentially go away.
The problem with him revealing Alya's identity doesn't really come down to how Nino didn't reveal such a thing incorrectly (though in season 5 he certainly does in the cafeteria of all places) but that he did so without his girlfriend's consent or consideration. One thing is to reveal YOUR true identity, and the other is to doxx someone. Yes, Adrien is friends with both Nino and Alya, yes he's trustworthy, and yes their identities are compromised to the big bad, but Alya is still not given a choice to confess to Adrien her own identity in her own right. Nino was in no place to do this for her. The reason he revealed his identity was not exactly "giving more context to the situation" but more so being a bit petty and spiteful and having the last word, because for what it's worth, Adrien was still winning this argument and even Nino knows that perhaps he's right, but he's still hurt and is still giving in to his insecurities so tries to find one more reason to justify it. He even then proceeds to talk shit about CN, even though Nino and CN also were supposedly good buddies. For Nino to both reveal the secret of his loved one without their consent and talk shit about his close bud over misunderstanding kind of shows that in fact, he's not emotionally intelligent or mature and certainly just not trustworthy.
And this also hurts because originally, as you pointed out, he absolutely was emotionally intelligent and supportive. He may have been a bad liar, but he at least TRIED to keep things secret and understood why they are as such, but as the show went on, Nino just lost this attribute of his, which is also why people are even more pissed at him because it straight-up feels like betrayal. We were all rooting for Nino and he just let us down. The hate doesn't necessarily come from him being unlikable, but from him being disappointing. Nino is as assassinated as a character as other characters that went through season 5.
And it just continued to happen: he threw a basketball at his best friend who was clearly upset and didn't bother hiding his sad friend and cheered when Adrien fell to the ground (and look, I understand, it's supposed to be a joke and they didn't animate a proper dodgeball and used basketball for some reason which is a very bad idea; this joke though is lowkey "kick the dog" moment however and it adds to the frustration); then there's infamous "he gets dumb by risk" by not seeing or thinking far ahead that Adrien's departure is the worst thing that can happen to him and then compromising Rena Furtive which ended up in fox miraculous being also lost (and sparing any jewelry would be a bliss); and then there are his actions related to the Resistance, which was one big of a joke that hardly did anything useful to the overall story. While the idea was actually nice, it was executed terribly and it made Nino indeed act more like a typical teenager, which sadly doesn't end up as a plus because too little too late, he should've acted like this in the beginning so we as the audience could later on see him grow and get to love him more. Seeing characters regress or even seeing their character development in reverse will always end up in people just hating them because if a good character starts to become trash, people will feel betrayed forever investing in them and their experience would be soured. There's also a scene in which he tries to play guitar as Luka's replacement which went badly and while this in itself is not an issue, the issue is that Nino only kept accumulating bad stuff and didn't do anything to truly redeem himself for it, so now any inconvenience regarding him just adds fuel to the hate.
TL;DR: The problem with Nino comes down to him regressing from the positive character he was at the beginning of the story and showcasing more of his bad traits that are never treated as a serious issue and it leaves the audience betrayed by such misbehavior and people would start to hate him. Nino was always flawed, but those flaws never got in the way as much as they did lately and he just didn't develop in a positive direction with any potential his character had, feeling like it was wasted. Carapace was a nice hero but ultimately he ended up being as important as Pigella.

Then, in s5 in that one episode where Marinette and Adrien don’t wanna be Ladybug and Cat Noir anymore Alya gets the ladybug miraculous and for some reason Zoe gets the cat miraculous. It shoulda been Nino getting the cat miraculous cuz him and Adrien are best friends and woulda made a lot more sense, not some s4 unnecessary Chloe replacement who barely had any interaction with Adrien. And the only reason the writers did this is to make Zoe feel like a somewhat important character since she barely gets any screen time. Plus Alya and Nino are dating and know each other’s identities and could be an amazing duo, unlike Alya and Zoe who probably have never had an interaction before.

It's very easy to call Nino a bad friend in S3-5 because we barely even see him acting like a friend. Heck, he barely got screentime. It's a constant Marinette, Alya, and Adrien drama. Nino barely, if not outright never, got time to spend more time with Adrien and have the two to just bond. Adrien never share his secrets. Their entire friendship is just something on paper but not in action.

i think one of the more petty reason I've seen for disliking him is the change of voice that he had after season 3. his voice actor at the time had good reason to want to not voice him any more and despite people saying he was fired or let go, no he wasn't he still is in the show. he just isn't voicing max or Nino any more. because he wanted someone that was more ethnically close to the characters (he is white and the new guy play them now is black.)

    • @kubat4925

Actually, I would discard that reason, because while racism in fandom is a thing, the very person who did replace him is the icon, the myth, the legend, of Zeno Robinson, who has multiple fantastic roles like Hawks from BNHA, Hunter from TOH, Remi from Big City Greens, Goh from Pokemon, Green Poncho from Craig of the Creek, and so on, and people are enamored with his voice acting. Granted, his performance of both Max and Nino is not his strongest, which may add to the problem, because if the very GOAT Zeno himself, can't find himself to give him an iconic performance, you know that something is wrong.

On to your first point though, well sure some of the discontent of the voice may stem from racisms. i feel a lot of people that watch this show don't like change. like I've seen this discourse over the new animation over the past few moths and its just insane. i just felt it was petty to only hate on his character just for a change in voice. especially since i feel that his character stay really constantly good this season.

It's usually better for a character to give their worst at first before giving their best, so people can be proud of how far they've come as a person and how much they grew. Instead, they're left feeling betrayed by how supposedly good character suddenly became more trashy on the way. It's betrayal, disappointment, and the sorrow of what is lost that turns into rage directed at the characters like Nino.

This is a lot of justifications - that said, in order to even enjoy the show, one has to do that for literally every single character and episode, soooo... I think you make good points, I think also the fact that Nino is such a good friend to Adrien who is a fan favorite - when Nino fails, is a jerk, and all that, it hits the audience a lot harder. It would be way different if we didn't know he's basically Adrien's only real emotional support. We want him to be perfect for Adrien, I think.
But that may be also projection on my part, because I really like Nino, I think he's one of the best characters, so when he gets sidelined a lot to just 'pal' and then comes back only to create drama (like rocketear, etc.) again - it hits harder than if it were someone we already expected selfishness from.
Also, random, but while I think 'Carapace' was chosen for silly reasons, the same way a ton of the names are created, just... barely tangential whimsical stuff (Flaremiddible? Pigella? Come on...) From a completely fridge-logic perspective, it's actually kind of genius since it basically amounts to him calling himself 'sheild' or 'protector'.

Nino is an excellent friend to Adrien and everyone else; however, the issue is that he's oblivious to Adrien's distress and cannot keep a secret. It shows a lot in the shows, and it starts in Animan as it is evident that Alya told Nino about Marinette's crush on Adrien and almost let it slip when Nino and Alya become official and confirm it in Puppeter 2 when they tried to leave Marinette and Adrien alone. Then, in Rocketear, Nino tells Adrien about him being Carapace and Alya being Rena Rouge without her consent or thinking clearly, as jealousy and jumping to conclusions lead him to this. Then, in Illusions, Nino tells Marinette about their secret in public at their school, which is dangerous. In Risk, it shows how oblivious Nino is regarding Adrien's emotional distress regarding his privileged life as a model because Adrien is obviously sad about the whole situation. After all, Adrien isn't shy about his problem with his father. Nino knows about it and is an easy tell when it happens, as everyone in the school knows what a shit father Gabriel is. However, when it comes to Adrien's true feelings about the rich and modeling world he lives in, Adrien isn't as open about it, which does lead Nino to believe he knows his best friend well when in reality, he doesn't because Nino assumes that Adrien has it all and that Adrien is stuck with a shitty father and that it.

Adrien in Risk hardly tries to cover his true feelings, it's very obvious he puts on a fake smile when confronted, but literally frows every other second. His cousin literally points this out that it can be seen on National TV. For characters, especially Nino, to not see it it's just an insult to their actual intelligence (or lack thereof when it comes to the plot). There's also the fact that Nino fails to consider that Adrien's trip would not be a chance to see the world when the whole trip is arranged by Gabriel, who would most likely keep him in his hotel room all day if he can help it and only release him for photoshoots.

You and I are in a fort holding out against the enemies of the fort who are besieging the fort. I have to leave for a minute to get some print toner or take the cat to the vet. While I do that (don't worry about how I'm getting past the besieging army, I have a secret tunnel and fake glasses), I want you to hold the fort so that when I get back, we will still have the fort. A perfectly reasonable metaphor embodying a sound military strategy. If I ask you to hold *down* the fort, what on Earth am I talking about? Hold down the fort because as we know, it's an inflatable hover-fort and without our combined weight, it may float away into the sky? Hold down the fort and when I get back, we can tickle the fort? No. Meaningless.

Chloe most likely doesn't know who the other heroes are, when you get de-akumatized you lose the memory of what you did when akumatized, even if she did remember she wouldn't spread it because then they'd more popular than her

I completely agree. As a matter of fact, I think Adrien’s friendship with Nino is more iconic than Yugi’s friendship with Joey from YuGiOh. Joey was a bully until the dark magic of the millennium puzzle made him Yugi’s friend. Joey is literally under an unbreakable spell that’s masquerading as friendship. Meanwhile, we know the Miraculous have effects outside of hero/villain mode. Gabriel can detect emotions when he’s not Hawkmoth. Natalie could detect amoks when she wasn’t Mayura. L Marinette was much luckier after receiving the Ladybug Miraculous (otherwise how are we to believe that she flawlessly designed a pair of sunglasses for a rock star that he actually likes. And even Gabriel Agreste gave her praise. I mean sure, Marinette is talented, but to have two celebrities praise you? Come on, there’s some luck there. Meanwhile, Adrien, with the Cat Miraculous, the antithesis of the lucky Ladybug Miraculous, probably has bad luck from his miraculous. His dad is suddenly abusive (Adrien says Gabriel used to be nice before Emilie died), his childhood friend (Chloe) is a bully. And yet, in contrast to Joey, Nino instantly became good friends with Adrien in spite of the bad luck the Cat Miraculous could bring. And Nino is a great friend too! Like, it’s iconic really.

I agree. I think people forget that these are TEENAGERS!! That don't have the emotional maturity or cognitive maturity of an adult, yet people charge him to the standards of someone much older than him. I think he's a good character and I actually think her did get a bit of character growth and development. He's just a kid and for a boy his age, he is both competent, reliable, and considerate. Sure he has his idiot moments, but if he didn't, wouldn't he run the risk of being a Mary Sue? He's fine the way he is and with a little more growth (which he has been proven to be open to) he can only get better.

    • @kubat4925
      @kubat4925 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The problem is that his more immature moments happen later than sooner. If we're introduced to Nino being emotionally intelligent and mature at first, then seeing him act immature feels like he just regressed as a person, and that is never nice to watch. Because you were rooting for this champ and he started to act worse than better. His competence just successfully diminishes as the series goes on and he never really faces the consequences of his actions. Alya should've dumped his ass for doxxing her, doesn't matter if she trusts Adrien or isn't a superhero anymore, she should have a say in who gets to know her true identity and it's not Nino's secret to share, and that's one example. And it's really not about him being Gary Stu but about him becoming worse as a person instead of better because his immature moments start to accumulate in seasons 4 and 5 when he already should've actually showcased even more positive development from the first seasons. Season 5 is the end of an era and Nino just didn't get the growth you speak of, which isn't right.

      1. His girlfriend would survive in her magical invincible armor
      2. Him believing as such is an issue as Nino should know better at this point in the story, 4 seasons and he believes his girlfriend and his hero bud would betray him like this? And if even so it doesn't justify him doxxing his girlfriend.
