- Alien Horizon gameplay with Orbital Potato! A sci-fi survival city builder set on an inhospitable alien planet. Faced with imminent destruction of Earth, humanity pooled together their resources and sent sleeper ships to nearby potentially habitable planets. But this one turned out to be much less habitable than expected....

Welcome to channel if you're new here, I'm Orbital Potato and play a bunch of strategy, simulation and sci-fi games here on TH-cam. I usually cover these games in the Lets Play format, but also make videos analysing specific game mechanics and looking at new releases. If you feel so inclined, consider subscribing, I would love to have you along for the ride! - เกม
Unless I am missing something, the free one is "Alien Horizon (Preview Alpha)", it doesn't sound like an actual "free game", just something in development that is currently free to play.
i dont know why but the ship looks like its crashed backwards
because it was trying to slow down with it's main engines...before it crashed.
Newtonian mechanics
it probably did.
Also could’ve been to avoid damage to the habitation section (front)
Because of how orbital maneuvering works it would be moving backwards because it would be trying to slow down by firing its engines in the direction of travel
Think I'm going to install this one and play a bit, this looks like it could be very promising. Even like the touch with the ship landing backwards which is realistic.
But the other ships did it forwards for some reason...
Some of the cargo ships are damaged
I was going insane trying to remember what this game was called and then you posted a video after i was searching for almost 2 hours lol. Had a lovely time with it
Hope you continue to make videos on this game as so far it shows some serious potential
Hello, longtime fan. The second ship is visible at 38:43 further out in NNW direction. Never mind.
Love the aesthetics but it lacks an existential threat that makes these kinds of games so much more fun. I mean, whats the point of building stuff if not to defend against the invaders in whatever form?
Awesome game. So relaxing. Thx
Yes, I have played quite far.
It has a problem, that has made me give up on it:
The further you get into the game, the more unstable it gets, and crashes annoyingly often.
That is not unexpected of an alpha build. This is a free preview build of a not-yet-complete game.
If you liked it enough to play it a lot, keep an eye on it for when it's finished.
Y’know, that’s what’s kept me playing Sierra’s _Outpost_ for 30 years.
00:51 Interesting how that ship landed backwards. Why shape it aerodynamicly if you're going to fly in arse-first 😆. Sure I can understand it if it was using the rear thrust as breaking thrust, but why make it aerodynamic front to back if that's the case?
if you want to slow down, isn't it *not* being aerodynamic, in the direction you're slowing down, helpful? It actually makes sense, the question is why the others are front-first
@@Dragoninja26 True, but then you'd slow down too much and stall, dropping like a rock. It makes sense to reverse break in orbit on planetary aproach and in a vacuum the aerodynamics are pointless, but once you reach geostationary orbit it makes more sense to reverse and enter forwards so aerodynamics reduces resistance and thus re-entry heat. Its definitely backwards!
I was wondering the same...
Perhaps it lost control before crashing. If it's a spaceship its design may not have been focusing on absolute aero stability as a priority, like planes tend to.
This is very good science. All the right terms and chemistry. Your random CO2 is coming from people eating and breathing.
I have one question, how did they manage to crash the ship in reverse ?
Interestingly enough, that is the most “realistic” detail for a space faring vessel.
In order to slow down, a ship must turn 180 degrees and use its main thrusters to reduce its speed, as small RCS thrusters are unlikely to overcome the inertia of the ship.
The ship does not seem to have wings or a control surface so it would not be able to glide to a crash landing.
Fantasy elements can be introduced to get around this, like the antigrav drives of Star Wars.
@@Inanimate-Object The other ships sitting here which have landed forwards then make almost no sense though. I guess it can justify why there are no survivors in them =) But that's far-fetched =)
That ship - I hope it left a potato behind when it left orbit!
Feels like surviving mars
But surviving mars have 6 resource and this one 50
Seems like a good game...
Would have been nice ro zoom in so we can see them building but again im only at beginning of vid not sure if you did that in vid
ok but hard on your eye's if your using an ultra wide monitor.
If you or anyone knows how to fix the ultra-wide monitor display issues I would like to keep playing. It is currently unplayable on my monitor. Thanks for the gem! Subbing
my colonists suffer and die from dehydration and suffocation.. i have enough water and oxygen in ship's storage and life support system and it's connected tanks, everything is green and shiny, every building is connected and have power and life support.. but workers dont want to drink and breath properly( i already lost about 20 colonists because of this bug(
If you have tankers full and mines disconected of life support, then miners will die
this game has Among Us sounds
When did city builders become "survival" games? I mean, surviving is part of almost every game, right? Isn't a city-builder where you have to survive just a city-builder? I alway feel that they're parsimonious with the land in games like these. The map could be near-infinite from a hardware standpoint.
Are you not aware of how much work goes into basic survival?
No supermarkets and hardware shops on an uninhabited planet.
not free, its a pre alpha

Any game that uses wind and solar is a no from me. ☢️
The ship have a nuclear reactor and there are 3 Mobile reactores in the cargo ships
Surviving Mars uses wind and solar at the start but moves on to radio thermal generation and fusion later on. The reason is mass limits and funding limits for the earliest phase. If you can do interstellar or easy interplanetary travel, nuclear is easy and plentiful.
