Doesn't seem that way at all, a wot with sailing. That's world of warships. To me this seem more like a coop/pve focused mmo, which is not that bad as long there is no instancing and all players are on same regional server, if the economy and player communication and off battle interaction are good, if there is enough customization and crafting to farm for and sell and trade, to have sense for guilds and some type of grand influence based gameplay for those guild to play for, even if it's through pve events. Sea of Thieves you don't have any AI Crew though. The game is locked to first person and the stylized art style could be a "turn on" or a turnoff for people especially in the pirate genre where pirates aren't really originally portrayed to be fun, playful and cartoonish more so gritty, violent and realistic. Personally love everything about the pirate genre but have zero interest in Sea of Thieves, but would love to play Skull and Bones every once and a while for a little mindless pirating fun
It’s almost impossible to play sea of thieves by yourself you cant fight other players without letting your ship sail right into an island and getting destroyed.
Black flag is one of my all-time favorites due to the seamless transition from captaining your ship to jump ashore or boarding enemies. No other pirate game that generation did that with such polish. Without that, this game has removed that soul. The Jack Daw was a main character alongside Edward. Playing and switching between both was so fun. Being locked to your helm while in combat or exploring kills the sense of openness and exploration that SOT or BF cultivate. I'll try Skull and Bones in a few years. Maybe they can turn it into something more my style.
This game was almost impossible to mess up, all it had to be was black flag but multiplayer. Only Ubisoft could miss the mark with this. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that a the creators of black flag, sat in a room and decided to make this mobile version of their 10 year old game
Ubisoft has lost the plot many years ago. They have over 3000 employees nowadays. Money is all they think about, none of the people in charge play games anymore if they ever have. They drive S class Merc's and think of players as consumers who buy products, not games. Its obvious Yves has lost any passion he ever had a long time ago, now he just tries to steer this behemoth of a company Ubisoft has bloated into
As I recall, the project would have and should have been abandoned years ago, but they have no choice but to get something to release because they have a contractual obligation with the government of Singapore.
It's even more funny when you realize THIS IS UBISOFT, company famous for using the same mechanics all over again in their games. But here they just said fuck it and abandoned all the mechanics that made AC Black Flag fun and gave us this mobile style crap.
A For Honor like game with ships instead of warriors was probably what they originally had in mind. Then they released a first trailer and people overwhelmed them with questions and demands:"will it be open world?", "will we be able to leave the ship?" etc. So they became scared and that's when they started to lose focus, trying to do everything all at once.

Having hubs where you can walk around in third person for me, is just adding salt to the wound of having no melee/boarding combat or island exploration. It's essentially half a game and they want full price for it, unreal.
Yeah they should launch it for early access in february and build foot combat on top as they adapt to feedback over the next couple years like Larian did. Too late now. Oh well.
They just sent out a shit ton of random invites. I’ve never gotten a beta invite before and I got one for this. It was ok. I played for 90 minutes. Will play a little more

I was expecting to be a pirate, not a pirate ship. This game had so much potential of being a bad ass pirate in a pirate world. From now on I will be setting expectations really low with Ubisoft.
My favourite moments of Black Flag was after a tense battle, winning, and then finally being able to absolutely murder the crew by boarding. No hand to hand combat? Bruh Ubisoft went full … You never go full …
I love pirate based stories! I was really, *really* hoping skull and bones would be GTA V or Skyrim but with pirates. Open world, my actions have consequences, I could choose to stay on land and have a shop, or sail on a ship, etc. I want to break out of prison and do actual pirate stuff 😅
Yes like Red Dead Redemption 2 except on the ocean with pirate ships instead of horses and being pirates instead of cowboys and have a bunch of islands you could visit and explore and rob people at sword point and get sent to the gallows only to escape at the last minute and do crazy pirate adventures. That is the kind of game we all want.
It’s crazy that you feel and play more like a pirate in an almost 10 year old AC game than this game which is mainly about pirates. Even crazier is it’s from the same company. They could have literally just taken out the AC part from black flag and it would still be better than this. Is it really that difficult to build on something that already worked ? My guess is they just wanted to take advantage of the hype behind black flag and rinse some money out of that with this.
All game are now made for like 2nd jobs(Grinding, boring repetitive tasks, daily quests which not for everyone because they have jobs Irl) im not gonna buy this skull & Bones seems boring because you cant explore small islands with treasures and also no hunting in open sea this game is Confirm DOA(Dead On Arrival)
I would even be fine with them cutting out the humans-doing-stuff bits if they wanted to focus on a borderline mobile/arcade quality naval combat setup where you're basically just the boat. But nah, they gotta throw in the actual pirates, then completely half ass that angle, just to blue ball people.
The only reason to have an inventory screen is to make you buy more storage space by microtransactions. Which is the real problem here: they build the whole microtransaction systems up and then built a pirate looter shooter around it. If they want me to pay for this stuff the game needs to be absolutely mindblowing that doesnt get boring even after half a year. But instead we get this comical pirate arcade game for kids.
This is such a bummer. I'm such a huge fan of pirates and I played the hell out of black flag. The only thing black flag needed was no assassins creed and to turn up the dial on RPG and maybe multi-player and it would have been perfect for me atleast. I've never been a fan of world of tanks style games so I probably won't even bother getting it.
People want hand to hand combat and island exploration, on top of pirating... That's assassin's creed, I think they didn't want to remake black flag and make this unique in its own way.
Instead of getting already seasoned planks from teak, ash, pine from hulls and already purified iron from cannons and cannonballs, already weaved ropes, sails from cotton, you mine fckn ore, cut down PALM trees good only for a raft, probably gather some hemp and shear sheeps. Bravo UBI! SEEMS LEGIT
@@highlandmedia-1 Also loading screens if you talk to people on land such as carpenter, blacksmith, trader. And also if you leave the conversation. The loading screens (up to 10 seconds each time) were enough to make me quit.
Without island exploration, hand to hand combat system, or interaction with crew and ship on foot, this is at the very most just under half of a pirate game. No ship combat system will ever be good enough to make up for it. This game will be forgotten in 6 months after launch
This is the same exact experience I had with it. I had a friend after about an hour that was playing with me. Ask if I wanted all their items because they never wanted to play it again. I thought about it for a second and realized I never want to play it again either. We logged out, went to sea of thieves.
@@SoftworksJellyPebblesThat pisses me off the most. They had such a strong foundation, why didn't they build upon that? Black Flag is such a great game!
They had many revamp and reboot of the game to do so ... i'm betting it won't even do that , and just straight go f2p when it crashes and burns , to recoup some funds
Ubisoft games have a problem with theme and tone. Perfect example is the minigames, it's not a bad idea to have a resource gathering component to get upgrades. But it's all about how you do it, the minigames really are the worst possible way. Instead imagine if in a pirate game you had to act like a pirate by perhaps taking over a small outpost or raiding a village on these islands. All in order to steal their resources and make them your own. Imagine actually having that whole process basically be a copy paste of black flags plantation missions where you do exactly that. That way you have the same progression system but with the right theming and tone plus more engaging gameplay. This was like the one time people would be happy for Ubisoft to just copy paste a game with some slight tweaks and a few upgrades, how they manage to miss the mark when literally handed a perfect opportunity for success is beyond me. Seems they are only capable of making the worst possible decisions.
You want dry wood when repairing a wooden ship so it swells when it gets wet. You don’t want to use wet wood that may shrink or end up being to small when it possibly drys
Honestly making this closer to a ghost recon wildlands pirate game could have been really fun. Taking down a pirate king or a corrupt colonial enterprise coop with friends sounds super fun
I've been saying that for a long time. I absolutely loved that game. And that's honestly what this game immediately calls to mind for me. A modern-day remake of Sid Meyers' Pirates would be amazing.
i played the beta and i had so much fun playing. swapping between things to do, doing quests, then hunt for blueprints for upgrades, get my resources, and sometimes just going around aimlessly and hunting random ships. I even did some trading! but most fun of all for me was, configuring your ship, your look, the customizibility just worked for me. it's even more fun if you have a friend with you.
Seriously, why have no one made a good Pirate only game? One that breaks the mainstream? AC4 proved you can have a game about pirates and break the mainstream. Like, it’s perfect and so few people do it.
@BloodyKnives66 so make them "privateers" they are naval mercenary. Who get paid by govorments to pirate stuff. Litterly the cyberpunk game was about hit men an mercenary an every body loves that still unfinished shitty buggy game. I don't think people care about the mortality of it its a game
The way the ships turn so fast and effortlessly just makes my head ache. So unrealistic. Steering a ship should be relatively slow, and especially at higher speed the angles should be quite large etc.
I don’t think the problem is people expecting it to be more like black Flag. The problem is people are expect a Good Pirate Game! Releasing a pirate game in 2024 without Boarding ships is inexcusable. It’s literally the coolest pirates do and it not in the game?
I got to try it out as well this weekend. While initial fun was there, i felt like it soon fell of as i started to realize that all missions are just fetch quests basically. Go sink a ship, come back. Go plunder a outpost, come back. Go transport some cargo, come back. There isn't really any meat to them or variety. Every type of the mission is the same thing. Also due to the fact that we only got to play for six hours (idk who's stupid idea that was) we didn't really get an opportunity to try out different ship types or classes because of the time required to get them. I was only able to test out the initial DPS ramming ship you get and the support type ship, both of which are in small category of ships. Got to say though, they much improved on ship customization and now changing ship armor actually changes the look of the ship and is not just some plating thrown on it like it previously was so that's great. As far as pirate game goes, i wasn't really feeling the pirate vibe TBH since a large portion about what pirates were (swashbuckling, sword fighting and pistol shooting) is actually not in this game, its just the naval combat part. On that point, naval combat feels very easy and it very arcade type of combat, you just get a crosshair you have to aim at enemy ship and you are done. There is no calculating of say arc of canon fire, wind doesn't really affect it much, its all very easy to master, no actual skill required really. It is a very casual game in pretty much every aspect. If you want a real challenge you won't find it here, unless you try to solo everything which is not a intended way to play. Game looks good and ran well on my PC on highest settings, at least world looks good. Character models on the other hand look horrible in comparison, like something 10 years ago or more. That's really how the whole game feels, like it's 10 years behind times
land combat and being able to walk around in person was like the bare minimum that ubisoft needed to do, and of course they didnt. cause they're ubisoft. who wants to chop wood from their ship? how does that even make sense?
Question: Considering the graphics are pretty much the same, what do I get from *Skull & Bones* that I can't get from the naval part of *Assassin's Creed: Odyssey* ?
My sentiments exactly. Everything I saw in this video I feel like you can pretty much do in Odyssey already… Except it’s worse because you can’t do everything else Odyssey offers. This just feels like a waste of a game man.
There's a stamina bar to accelerate your ship, something that wasn't present in Black Flag and honestly is something that's detrimental to the fun of the game. In Black Flag, when nothing is going on, you'd raise your sails so your ship goes quicker to the next battle/point of interest and then lower them when engaging another ship or to stop near land. Then, you'd use your stamina to ram ships. In Skull&Bones, you can raise your sails only if you have stamina which will continuously deplete until your sails magically lower themselves, artificially extending your playtime for no reason. That simple feature only makes me ask why people would play this over Sea of Thieves, especially when SoT released with the realistic mechanic of wind currents 5 years ago.
a mobile game, essentially. i was never excited about Skull & Bones, but i was intrigued when it was first announced. then i forgot about it. now i don't care because it looks and feels like a mobile game. i'll go back to my Black Flag instead, thank you.
How is this a satisfying pirate experience when there’s no hand to hand combat? No sword fighting with flintlock pistol or musket fire from your ship while boarding. Biggest let down.
"It's like a superman game but you play as Clark Kent getting coffee" ... or a Spiderman game but you play as Peter riding a bike with Harry Osborn Oh wait we actually had that
@@x0Fang0xthe difference between this and Spider Man is that this is actually a game, unfortunately Spider Man is a $60 movie that outstays its welcome
What i loved about the pirate stuff in AC:Black flag, was not just the ship combat, but the ship boarding and exploration of the different islands and cities. This game just doesn't work as a full fledged (hopefully not a full $70) game, like Black flag or AC Odyssey which had similar ship gameplay.
Honestly, the lack of hand to hand combat is what kills it for me. What's the point of boarding another ship if it's just some quick animation that plays? I'd see the animation probably 10 times before I got tired of it. It removes any variety those encounters could have had.
This is a good video summary of the game and communities' opinions. I personally just want Black Flag with more unique ship battles(like the legendary ships), usable ship types, and customization. Also, the breaks from the naval gameplay are what I think made Black Flag work. Immersive activities like harpoon hunts and diving and the on land missions, which after completing, made you refreshed and ready to sail again.
World of Tanks with ships.... World of boats..ships..Warships, that sounds awesome, somebody should make that a game. Love the content man, keep it up.
A game that's just ship combat could be great if they really put a huge effort into it and do a great job making tons of different builds and ship types and crazy ships to fight. From this footage, though, I'm not really seeing that. I'm just seeing Black Flag with half the game cut out.
The game is mediocre at best, but the worst part is the pricetag they put on it. What audacity to charge 70 freaking schmeckles for something that Black Flag did better 10 years ago
I knew nothing about the game going into the beta and immediately I was disappointed there was no melee. I was also bored out of my mind during the tutorial gathering part, worst part is there is no reason to really gather once you do get a ship since it's better to just sink/board enemy vessels for materials. I did have some fun but good lord I'm never paying full price it, I'll be waiting for that 75% off sale.
I’m one of the people that went into the beta expecting it to be very similar to black flag. The similarities are there but it’s just not what I was hoping for. I’m definitely not paying $60 for Skull and Bones
Truly wild that Black Flag is a decade old, what a great game! I'm not a game developer, but it's pretty crazy they couldn't do a Black Flag 1.5, 2, or even anything remotely close to the original game... in 2023... with 100s of millions of dollars. I do admit the lightning storms and the water, like you said, look good. But jeez man smh
I had such high hopes to relive my childhood of black flag with this game, but this is just disappointing. No close combat fighting is a big no, the resource gathering system is awful. How can they mess this up so badly
I like how Ubisoft has Avatar Frontiers of Pandora that loads almost thousands of highly detailed alien and some even interactive plants up close in first person and then this pirate ship game made by the same studio can’t load some simple trees and rocks correctly.
Another opportunity this game completely misses: The ocean. You have a vast ocean and apparently you can't even dive and discover what's below the surface. Unless you are a big fan of ship combat, this game looks like it could have been so much more.
You pretty much summed up how I felt about it after playing. It's kinda sad really, because I truly enjoy sailing games and it's a rather underrated genre, like there are so few games like this, so I actually want to play it lots, but with that price tag, and the amount of stuff it seems to offer, It seems smarter to just play it for a month of ubisoft + and see if it the feeling survives
Yes indeed for the amount of time this has been in development i was hoping for AC Black Flag 2 without the AC stuff. That said, i had a great time in the beta but the most fun was grouping up with other player ships. Being able to fill a tank, healer, or dps role in a group seems interesting to me, I’m just not sure how long the current gameplay loop will keep me engaged. Was really hoping for hand to hand combat and exploration on land.
Shouldve focused more on exploration and innovative ship mechanics. Freedom of leaving the ship, boarding, etc. would be even better if the nemesis system wasn't patented so games like this could use it.
I think a good way to think about this game, is World of Warships set in the 1700s with more fast paced, intimate combat, and the ability to step off your boat and walk around at port.
This was the first game I ever played that I couldn’t even FORCE myself to play for more than an hour. I got a beta code and tried it yesterday but I guess it was just a waste cause there’s no chance I’m playing it again.
I love how Luke made up a Superman example to get his point across when we have that exact situation every time Insomniac forces another Mary Jane or random deaf girl mission down our throats. Like we're here to play Spiderman, what are you even doing 🤣
For me, I think most people just thought it would be the mechanics from Black Flag, not the actual content...they really seem to have tried to make it more like other pirate games out right now and that's such a shame, because the at sea mechanics were perfectly fine, they really only needed a huge map with a greater variety of ships. They tried to copy AND re-invent the wheel at the same time...also I imagine the MT's in this will be ludicrous.
It's not a bad game, but it's definitely not a good one either. From what I played It has some fun elements, but I feel it should have been free to play type game. Definitely wish there was more ship exploration. Also instead of gather mini games. Let me either actually do it myself or assign my crew to hop out and do it. Tedious as material gathering is that would add a layer of fun to it I think.
Yep, that's how I see it. It's just an average game that no one will really care about one way or another in the next year. It'll fade away quickly but won't be the disaster of The Day Before.

That is the kind of game we all want.
You logic is faulty. Ubisoft cannot even make a game that come close to GTA V or (somehow) Skyrim

The no hand to hand is such a deal breaker for me and a lot of people.

So Sea of Theives is Black Flag? Thats just stupid @amokana

I don’t think the problem is people expecting it to be more like black Flag. The problem is people are expect a Good Pirate Game! Releasing a pirate game in 2024 without Boarding ships is inexcusable. It’s literally the coolest pirates do and it not in the game?
so it's basically World of Warships if that was in the 17th century
This games looks like it'll be fun for like 15 hours and then will get boring and never touched again. I'll pass on this tbh.
land combat and being able to walk around in person was like the bare minimum that ubisoft needed to do, and of course they didnt. cause they're ubisoft.
who wants to chop wood from their ship? how does that even make sense?
This is just a beautiful mobile game.
Question:
Considering the graphics are pretty much the same, what do I get from *Skull & Bones* that I can't get from the naval part of *Assassin's Creed: Odyssey* ?
the multiplayer that you never wanted lol
Wait there’s no actual sailing here???
Stamina for a ship 😂
People would play this over sea of thieves because sea of thieves isn’t available on ps5. If it was, this game would’ve been cancelled from the start.

Those games where 60$
I think everyone just wanted a pirate rpg? Idk how ubisoft didn't get the messaging?
Honestly, the lack of hand to hand combat is what kills it for me. What's the point of boarding another ship if it's just some quick animation that plays? I'd see the animation probably 10 times before I got tired of it. It removes any variety those encounters could have had.
Ubi is LAZY 😴
11:10 Ain’t nothing changing when in beta phase, wish ppl would understand that.
Disappointing , I won’t spend 60 or 70 for something that don’t look high quality when it comes to graphics and realism
The fact they made a pirate game where you don’t swing a sword is baffling
Calling it right now, no hand to hand combat will make this game dead on arrival

A game that's just ship combat could be great if they really put a huge effort into it and do a great job making tons of different builds and ship types and crazy ships to fight. From this footage, though, I'm not really seeing that. I'm just seeing Black Flag with half the game cut out.
Im surprised the soulless main "HQ" wasn't touched up on. It just didn't FEEL like a pirate bay. No banter, no music, nothing.

Feels like a free to play world of warships game sold as a AAA game 60$...
So ur telling me i can't enjoy the ship battles like i use to do in black flag , Ubisoft never disappoint in disappointing.
No swordplay?? No flintlock pistols? No hand to hand fighting?? SHIVER ME TIMBERS!! Hard Pass.
This is the best part of black flag with a new coat of paint with all ground exploration taken out along with hand to hand combat gone!
Game is very mid, tried to play it and cutscenes lagging like crazy and a lot of crashes.
Like Luke said I want Black Flag 2 without the AC part.
I spent more time trying to get a beta code than I spent actually playing the beta. Very disappointing game.
Honestly surprised they are still going to release this
I love how Luke made up a Superman example to get his point across when we have that exact situation every time Insomniac forces another Mary Jane or random deaf girl mission down our throats. Like we're here to play Spiderman, what are you even doing 🤣
But dude it deserved game of the year. Nobody even played baldur's gate 3 - some sad console warrior
That deaf girl mission was completely optional side quest though.
MJ missions I get the comparison because they're part of the main story
