    I love how you recessed the wheels, used dovetails, took the time to use recycled wood, made a video for us, but when it came time to fill the drawer....plop...Organized! lol

    I remember when having dove tails joins was a sign of high end stuff, never thought I'd see it in the same project with "ply wood I pulled from the garbage" :)

    Your videos are really inspiring. I always loved wood work, growing up with the forest at the end of the garden. Also my grandfather was a carpenter so got a lot of inspiration from him. Unfortunately I live in a small flat on Amsterdam now, so no room for any heavy and complicated stuff. But I think I will have a go at your 'under bed' drawers. Looks fantastic.

    This video reminded me of a bed that my grandfather made when I was a kid (40 years ago). He had built a bed for a guest room in their house. They often had company and needed another bed but there was not room for one so like this under-bed storage he made a roll-away bed that rolled under the other one. Great video

    What came to my mind watching this video other than, "Damn I want to go build something", was "this is true Yankee craftsmanship". I grew up watching New Yankee Workshop, loved that show and still do, but there wasn't much Yankee in it. The Yankee part is building something new out of something old, from old bits and pieces and here is where Matthias excels. Keep the vids coming Matthias!

      10 usb cables is nothing. Luckily I'm a 5 minute drive away from a Best Buy and you can bring in stuff and they supposedly recycle it. Even if they don't actually and it all ends up in the garbage, I've got some peace of mind that I tried. Just last week I brought in 2 old printers, a monitor that got wrecked by a power surge, and a hefty bag full of all kinds of cables, thing had to be 30 pounds at least. Before that,under my bed was basically like the mess he put in that drawer, only I didn't have a drawer.

  • @mars1952

    LOL! It would have been better if you had used a shovel to put the wires in the drawer. I have to agree about gluing the bottom. I would have free floated the bottom in a slot. Nice video!

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The slot is a major weakness. Gluing it works prefectly well, the rate of expansion of plywood is the same as the wood along the long grain, so there's no issue with wood movement.

    • @timherrmann7066
      @timherrmann7066 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Matthias Wandel That's something I'd like to see you prove as part of one of your experiment videos--I've seen drawer after drawer built with the slot method, and have never heard any concerns over "weakness..." I'd be interested to see which method is actually stronger.

    • @mars1952
      @mars1952 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthias Wandel
      I think that gluing the bottom on like you did is stronger and yields more drawer space. Here in North Carolina we get a lot of movement in the wood from season to season. I like the glue on method better but I would like to see the method proven. Now that I think about it I realized that I have made tote trays that are built just like your drawer and they have stayed together for 30 years. (They are all plywood.)

    • @DarrinCalvinRoenfanz
      @DarrinCalvinRoenfanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never had issues with the slots breaking, but I have had time and time again the drawer bottom bowing and eventually falling out of the slot because of the free-floating and undersized aspect.

  • @Fadeypoo
    @Fadeypoo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautifully made. I dream of a workshop like that!
    I have used some drawers from old desks and cabinets that already have small wheels on the runners either side. Underneath my bottom kitchen cupboards, I've reduced the kickplates by a few mm and fitted some thin magnetic plates to the rear so they can be easily removed. The old drawers live behind the kickplates for loads of extra storage. Peace

  • @invaderkendall
    @invaderkendall 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. Plywood doesn't really swell & contract.
    2. The bottom, back and side are part of the wheel well.
    3. Floating the bottom would rob you of vertical space.
    4. Tight against the floor prevents clutter or things that like to hide.
    5. The bottom of sides, front and back won't fray or split from heavy use.
    6. Sides, front and back swelling/shrinking/warping from humidity is negligible since it isn't fitting in a drawer space.
    7. Matthias Rocks!

    Nice! Good way to make use of that wasted space under the bed. A few comments.
    1.) Bumpers at the back of the drawer to keep it from banging into the wall? Would be a good addition.
    2.) Gluing the panel into the bottom of the drawer was probably not the best idea due to wood movement. If you have any kind of seasonal humidity changes, this joint will fail and the wood will split, especially since you have a cross grain glue joint. But, as this is indoors, you may get away with it for a while. Other areas of the country will not. Better to use a dado and capture the drawer bottom in that to allow wood movement. You lose some storage, but at least the joint doesn't fail.
    3.) I like your use of inline skate wheels here. You can pick these up cheap at yard / garage sales during the summer. Thrift stores generally jack the price way up for something like this. You can also use skateboard wheels. Just size the opening to fit.

    • @XxPhasemanxX
      @XxPhasemanxX 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. A great addition
      2. There are screws in the joint as well. So even if the glue fails, the screws are still going to hold it in place.
      3. Skateboard wheels would work but because they're so small the wheel wells would need to go on the bottom instead of inside, which would mean the unit would have to be taller and not fit under the bed.

    • @mattknowler4769
      @mattknowler4769 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He made a video on how much all of his equipment costs, which isn't even close to being thousands of dollars. This video isn't really supposed to be instructional anyway; his channel is a monument to his website (woodgears.ca/) which goes into more detail of his builds. But if you had half a brain you would know that (because your comment is about as constructive as a bag of hammers).
