As the title suggests, you can add a drawer-based storage system to any bed that has open room underneath. The trick is to make sure that you are building this solution to fit your bed. While we do have plans for the Modern Canopy Bed in all sizes, they don't include this drawer unit. The point being that you can make this style of drop-in drawer system no matter what size or style bed you have. The important thing to consider is the space under your bed and building the unit around that.
When it comes to space under a bed, there really is no set of guidelines to go off of. Unlike other pieces of furniture like writing desks or dining room tables, bed frames don't have recommended height dimensions. With this in mind, you have to consider what you want to store in these drawers. Some may have enough room to be a full dresser replacement, while other may only fit linens or blankets.
You must also consider how the storage unit will be attached to the bed, if at all. In our case, the drawer system can be screwed into the sides of the headboard and footboard for stability. Some alternative may be adding free-floating drawers on casters or furniture pads that can slide out independently.
Armed with the bed's measurements, I designed a structure to hold the drawers in Fusion 360. This structure will add dividing walls between the three drawers while raising the drawers off the ground and adding structural strength to the system. I cut down plywood panels for the bottom stringers, a back support and the dividing walls and connected them all with pocket screws and wood glue.
At this point I can add some drawer slides to each dividing wall for the three drawers. The trick with attaching drawer slides is that they need to be affixed consistently and parallel with the bottom supports. You can use a spacer set on top of the bottom stringers, our you can set the slides on the stringers, either way will work. I chose soft-closing drawer slides like I do for most of my furniture projects. Anyone with kids knows that soft-closing hardware is a wise investment. After a dry fit of the structure under the bed, I can start on the drawers and drawer faces themselves.
Typically, I like to have a plan and cut list before I begin each project. But for these drawers, I'm waiting until the structure is complete and the drawer slides are installed. I measured each opening for the openings and built the drawer boxes to fit. Once all six drawer boxes were cut, glued, and brad nailed together, I set them on a riser and connected the drawer slides.
Now that the drawer boxes are installed, I could focus on the drawer faces. I cut down a long section of plywood that matches the canopy bed into three panels. This way, I could match the grain pattern on each of the three faces. To match the minimalistic style of the canopy bed, we chose to leave off any exposed hardware. I used my router and a rounded bit to add a scallop to the underside of each face. After cutting the faces to a length that left 1/8" (3mm) between them all, I could add edge banding and screw them to the drawer boxes.
The drawer units are now ready to be installed under the bed frame. In the video, I removed the mattress and the bed slats to install the drawer units. Depending on your bed and your initial measurements, this may be necessary. You can now secure the unit to the bed, but first you need to determine the reveal or where it should be positioned. We set the drawer unit back 1/2" (12.5mm) and used screws to attach them to the bed.

I like the "real world" measurement analogy - I have been burned by going off the design measurements for an entire project - only to find the fit was not quite right.

I know there was a three year span where I slept on an air matress a lot.
Some people prefer having their mattress on the floor (weird, I know)
Also American beds are exceptionally high.

Well most people in 3rd world countries don't actually have a bed, they have sheets made out of woven dried leaves which they just roll on the floor at night then kept aside during the day. I know coz I grew up with it. 🙂

You just solved a problem for me. I will be building a bed from Steve Ramsey's Powered Up course for our new house. Under bed storage are not in the plans. I was having a hard time finding a concept(I considered a bed frame from one of your old videos)we could adapt to that bed. This is the plan I have been looking for. ILTMS for the win!

From experience growing up with under the bed drawers: I'd make sure to cover the top. Dust from under your bed getting into your clean stuff in the drawers is not the most fun and you don't want to have to deep clean the drawers constantly
Just a note for anyone thinking of doing this: the drawer closest to the headboard will need to clear any furniture such as night stands or desks that are placed close to the bed, which might mean that you'll still have a strip of dead space at the head of the bed, or that you might want to consider floating shelves/cabinets instead of regular furniture pieces so that you have clearances to actually open the drawer at the head of the bed.
That's the main problem I have with my current (store bought) bed. It has one big drawer on casters under it. I have to move the nightstand every time I want to use it. The nightstand does have casters under it too but cables from my alarm and lamp make it annoying to move.
I'm thinking of building a whole new bed (and matching/integrated nightstand) but I have to get some more experience on woodworking first.
We just use that last drawer for things that are easy to get without the drawer pulled all of the way out(socks), or things we don't need often (blankets).
Or, store less frequently used items in those drawers, knowing you can move the bedside furniture a couple times a year for full access.
Another option which I've done before is to offset that drawer back and from end tables, night stands etc cover it in a panel but use the space for a power board in the middle and run charging/power cables to each side so all the cables are hidden. Panel just needs a small hole for cables run out of which I usually put a cover on to. On another note space is a great "safe" for things like passports etc.

I noticed the ol “tip the board up” trick if the miter saw is just a bit short of cutting all the way through the material. A great little technique I’ve used for years. Worth adding to a tool tip in a video if it hasn’t been. I’m sure you probably covered it years ago I’d lost track with all the amazing content you keep putting out.

I love watching these videos. They always give me great ideas. I did notice one thing. Bob is definitely a proponent of using pocket holes to join to pieces of wood. If there is anything that has to do with joining 2 pieces of wood, there is at least an 85% chance it will have pocket holes. I'm sure they work fantastic. I'm certainly not an expert on the subject. I actually just found it interesting that they are used so often.

Oh, wow. Totally solved a problem for me! I recently refitted the kitchen, and raised all the kitchen units so there was room for storage underneath. I was considering making loose wheeled drawers, mainly because the drawer sliders I found were hefty great beasts that took up way too much room. But with the handy link in the description for those sliders, I can now progress! Awesome, man! :D

Great looking storage!!! Thank you!!!! I made similar drawer before, but i just repurposed used drawer from a okd furniture and added casters on the bottom. It was cheap solution to much needed storage for my three kids.

Nice build. Another good idea would be to use the spring actuated drawer slides. That way when opening the drawer, you push it in with your foot and it pops out. That way you don't have to reach all the way under the drawer to open it and you can keep your clean aesthetic.

One suggestion is to cover it with a top. While it seems like un-necessary work, It keeps a LOT of dust bunnies out of the drawers.

I absolutely want to make my whole bed frame & headboard, and add some storage underneath it as well. It has been on my to do wishlist for quite some time. I just don't have the money to buy some nice wood to do it, with the quarantine and all.

You should totally make some horizontal and vertical Murphy beds! I want to make a horizontal Murphy bed with my full size mattress, but kits that consist of a couple of metal bits and pieces and instructions are $300!

Great project! I have plastic clothes storage boxes under the bed, but they're a universal design and not very deep.. this is an easy solution
I'm about to convert my daughter's toddler bed to a full size bed. It came with a drawer and drawer slides that were ball bearings and they went EVERYWHERE. Now I have ideas of how to adjust my design to add the drawer back in
