An SR-71 pilot traveling Mach 3 had his right (?) engine experience an inlet unstart, causing immediate and extreme yaw. Plane disintegrated before the pilot had time to react. Pilot came to, falling through the sky. Didn’t eject but was thrown clear of the he plane. It has happened, could be the reasoning behind Mav’s survival in this scene
Not if you have an ejector pod (escape capsule). I’m assuming the DarkStar had the ability to eject the cockpit section to keep the pilot safe through subsonic speeds before actually ejecting the pilot.
"He's the fastest man alive" combined with the piano, the space shots, and "Talk to me Goose" is so fucking uplifting ...my favorite scene in the film.

The sound was MASSIVE in the theater. What a great scene to start the movie. Loved it.

Once he hit 10.0 you know he’s gonna push it….you know he’s gonna blow up the jet….but the film does such a good job in managing expectations while delivering basic story elements so effortlessly.

Reminds me of reading an article about the SR-71. One of the pilots said while flying north toward Canada they watched the sun set on their left. Then they turned left and were going so fast they literally watched the sun rise in the west, over the Pacific Ocean.

He destroyed the prototype, which set the program back by billions of dollars and many months. He should've stopped at Mach 10.1, and let the program continue with the existing data for analysis to determine the upper bound before modifications are needed.
I'm amazed Tom didn't insist on really doing this for the movie.

I wish i could have seen this movie in the theater. It gives me chills when Maverick says 'Talk to me, Goose'. This movie is the definition of a masterpiece and I tip my hat to everyone that made it possible! Since purchasing this I must have watched it 20 times and it has yet to get old.
Rear Admiral Cain showing concern and disbelief on his face when Maverick's ride ends is such a great detail in this scene. He needs to be in control of the situation and an intimidating presence in the room, but just below the surface wants the best for his pilot and for him to succeed.
In real life he would be furious for them disobeying direct orders and playing with 100 million dollars worth of experimental military hardware like its their personal plaything
Yeah, he might be fighting for budget in the office wars, but no one like seeing a test pilot lose their life even if they work in a competing department.
Cain was going to reassign him under Iceman's orders. Imagine Cain's shocked face reporting to Iceman that Maverick died before he could get reassigned.
Gotta love how he says that Maverick "has some balls" doing what he did, only to just come down in an attempt to ground them down.

Crazy to think that at Mach 10, you would be able to circumnavigate the earth in a little over 3 hours (if you're able to maintain Mach 10 or 12,348 km/h, that is). It took the explorer Magellan and his crew over 3 years in the 16th century to complete the first circumnavigation by sea.

if you don't know the history between Maverick and Goose then i can see why some people don't get it but if you do then you can't help getting emotional when he say's it for the first time in the movie, before the film we was going to expect the phrases that we've known for years from Top Gun 1 but this was perfect timing for me

They probably do exist. The SR 71 was developed in the 60s and wasn't really discovered by the public till about the early 80s.

So interestingly enough, something very similar to this actually happened in real life. SR-71 broke up over Mach 3, and one of the pilot survived. Took the guy a while to come to terms with the fact that he wasn't dead because he knew no one could have survived that. It's an incredible story if you are into that kind of thing.

You see this? It's so magical, it looks like some meteor breaking up to pieces, it's like something alien, something stellar, but it's not.
That thing in the sky is man made, and manhandled by a human being. But same as the astronomical sight, it was also an astonishing effort by the pilot.
According to MFS with its Darkstar mission you fly the jet at 120,000 feet coast to coast close to Mach 10. So I figure he was at that altitude when the plane broke apart.
Perfect sound design, perfect acting, excellent shots and cinematography all come together to make a gripping nail biting scene, art
The higher up in the atmosphere, the less dense the air becomes. So once he gets up near space there would not be as much turbulence. Still the best movie of the year.

If he did not blow the jet, he's no longer Maverick. That's why we love Top Gun.

The admiral might hate his guts, but he still shows concern for his safety when they think he just died.
I absolutely love his delivery of the line "and despite your best efforts you REFUSE to die" in the next scene.

This sequence set the tone. Watching this in imax4d with the seats moving and vibrating really teleported you into the movie instantly.
I really wish i could experience watching this movie for the first time again.
People don't believe we've been to the moon but what they fail to realize is that all the astronauts of that period were pilots with the same skill as mavrick if not far more. They all had balls.

Not if you are in a pod like what nasa uses, I bet it deployed parachutes once it slowed to a certain speed and elevation bringing him safely back to earth.
They said the same thing about anything over Mach 3. Yet a pilot survived that because they had tech that protected him from direct air exposure in the event of any time of ejection.

Man, I remember being in the theater and when the score crescendos at 1:10 and just thinking “oh shit, now we’re watching a movie.” It was such an awesome moment, totally unexpected from a summer action movie. I knew from that moment that this would be a special movie.

The soundscore of just this scene is astounding. If you have a good surround sound setup, the low growl hits from the floor to ceiling. Phenemenal scene.
I like how they gave him hell for flying the f-18 to hard on that demo run saying it wasn’t “airworthy” anymore yet he wrecks a experimental plane which would probably be 900 billion dollars and never got one word said to him about it

Losing experimental planes is something that's far more excepted in comparison to losing a combat aircraft.

Nah, pentagon project doesn't work like that, the hardware are operational cost, they keep feeding you as long as it meets parameters.
@@Verpal granted the hardware costs money, but the entire purpose of the project was to ascertain the ability of an aircraft to reach a cruising speed of Mach 10. Maverick proved that the aircraft could do so, and keep accelerating. Regardless of the material losses, the proof of concept would still have value.
For an example of this: Chuck Yeager’s crash neither grounded him, nor did it prompt a cancellation of the project. Losses do occur, but what it means is the USAF can invest in hypersonic aircraft without running the risk of wasting money building an aircraft that underperforms.

3:31 Awesome scene , a 10-score, for sure. Mav likely survived his insane need for speed by ejecting - or rather separating - the cockpit portion of the plane. Notice how he rapidly pulls all the way back on those side controls before all contact is lost. At that moment, the monitors go black at Mach 10.4. Hmm...10-4 is code for I'm ok, no assistance required, etc. Just a theory, of course. But ejecting at hypersonic speeds obviously puts horrific stress on a body (think heat/fire, air pressure, flying debris...). Best chance for pilot survival is inside an escape pod, like others have suggested.
You never seen any kind of ejection handles so a escape pod is a far more likely outcome as the scientists and engineers would know that ejection at such high speeds would be impossible so would build the cockpit as a pod to allow for survivability.
Apparently, things are different high up where the atmosphere is thinner. An SR-71 pilot survived a mid-flight breakup at Mach 3+ without ever having ejected, the aircraft just broke apart around him. He was protected by his suit. The other airman died though.

Just noticed (4th or 5th watch of the movie) at the very end of the scene when the engine has an unstart, the next frame is inside cockpit and you can see maverick's head hit the side, similar to what happened to the SR-71 pilots when an unexpected unstart occurred. The detail in this movie is outrageous. What a masterpiece.

When I first watched this movie in theaters I assumed that this would be the final plot. Like in order to prevent anyone else from going on the mission, Mav would do a final suicide run in a remade Darkstar and be reunited with Goose during the mission, to see him in his final moments.
Surviving a mach 10 blow out to possible ejection should be impossible. Pretty much confirms Tom Cruise is a an alien/super human in this movie.
He's a superhuman in real life
There was a theory that instead of the Darkstar having just an ejection seat. It was an entire ejection pod that completely protected him from being vaporized while moving that fast.
He didn't eject...Watch how nasa gets its astronauts back to earth after traveling through the atmosphere and it will make sense how he survived this.

After “he’s the fastest man alive” this scene has to be one of the most epic scenes shot in human history.
1:18 this is how you make men in their late 30s or older cry. I welled up watching this in the cinema as a borderline obsessed Top Gun fan and in my late 30s. The pure nostalgia, the music, the fact that this film had been made. Ugh, it's just so good.
This movie is a reunion of Cruise and Harris who previously worked together in 'The Firm', twenty nine years ago.
This is so damn good, the last time I remember a cinematic moment in the sky as good as this one is in Superman (2013) when he was flying the first time.
Best scene when he said talk to me goose i almost lost it
When he said "talk to me goose" and later on shouted "come on" . . . Was at the edge of the seat, it reminded me Jeremy from Top Gear when he pushed the Lamborghini to it's limit at imola race track when he went flat out shouting "come on! You can do this" and the mighty flat crack V12 raging bull Lambo was spitting flames 🔥. It's amazing and gives goosebumps to see someone performing from the bottom of their heart giving their all, fully present and oozing passion when doing something.

For those who aren't aware....At that speed you don't eject your body with an ejection seat. You eject in a cockpit "escape pod". The cockpit detaches and will carry the pilot down to Earth.
Planes such as the US F-111 has a cockpit escape pod. Also The B-58 has an escape pod as well that seals the pilot inside a pressurized capsule. The pilot then guides the capsule down to Earth using a flight stick and rockets attached to the pod. Then a parachute is deployed when they have slowed down enough.

At such speed you wouldn't be able to make such a turn, because the G-forces, and wind, would rip apart the light construction of the plane, I am surprised no one commented that anywhere.
It'd be more squeaky bum than Top Gun really.
