  • The Neumann TLM103 was my first professional-level condenser mic purchase, and it remains one of my favorites to this day. By no means is it cheap, but I do believe the value is equal to the cost - and that's saying something!

I upgraded from TLM 102 and bought TLM 103. I love it and I'm perfectly satisfied with it 😊 Paired with dbx 286s and KT76 it sounds amazing

Great video! TLM103 is one of the GOAT spoken word microphones (along with the MKH 416 and U87). I think once you go down the audio rabbit hole, the microphones that you should purchase for spoken word become more clear. Where many end up is they buy in the $250-$500 range, and sift through all the mics in that range taking losses switching mics. Truth is, buy something like the Rode NT1 or CAD E100S, then when you have the funds, buy an MKH 416 or TLM 103 (or U87 if you roll like that) depending on what type of work you're doing.
I'm shocked more folks on Twitch aren't using TLM103s. Then again, how many are even making sure they're loud enough (checking LUFS) before they start broadcasting?

good point about taking losses while you search for mics!

I have the Apollo Twin and the TLM103…the U87ai is still my baby…but for the best HIGH QUALITY budget mic…the 103 is the best in my opinion.

My wife pursued voiceover work for a few years and the TLM 103 was her forever microphone. I started podcasting and got into audio, collecting a bunch of mics, but never tried her Neumann because a condenser doesn't suit my space very well. UNTIL... tonight I tried the TLM 103 for singing and OMG I've never sounded better. It was super hot as well, which I appreciated because I didn't have to belt the songs out.
I'm using the Audient iD22 with it. Sounds phenomenal.

Love the TLM 103 mic, I am interested in trying out the U87 and the TLM 49 still though just to see if the 103 will remain the one for me!!!!! ✌🏼👍🏼🙏🏻

Hey Brodie, greetings from the U.K., been a subscriber for a while now and really appreciate the uploads on advice/reviews helps a great deal.
Question, I nearly purchased the TLM103 recently but as you mentioned it was a little harsh for my voice (and high sibilant effect) so I ended up getting the TLM193.
Very similar sound. Do you have any experience or colleagues that have used the 193 for some advice ? Seems weird that there are virtually no vids comparing the 103-193
Keep up the great work mate !!

hi stephen - thanks for subscribing! I have never used the 193, and have only heard a little bit of it... but sounds perfect for your voice, because i understand it's a little "darker" and that would seem to reduce a lot of the top end & sibilance issues you suggest. i honestly just dont think many people have their hands on a 193!

It does have the same capsule as the U87ai but doesn’t have the FET and higher impedance…but clarity is top notch

I got dbd 286s and a black lion rev 2x2 interface did you think it is good for this mic ?

With the low self noise you can record a watch ticking and the sound recording will be perfect…without all the noise

Not sure if you monitor this site still, but What is the difference with the large diaphragm? What is Cardiod?

Hi, thank you for this contents. I need to ask one question about neumann family. I usually make rap and r&b vocal recording and i want to buy mic for using very long times. I mean dont want to think do i need to change this mic ?. Its very difficult to choose between these three microphones ( TLM103, TLM49,U87AI). Can you help me about this ? Best Regards.

depends on your budget. and who is using it primarily. i dont think you can go completely wrong with any of them. u87 is probably the most versatile... but then again i dont have much experience with the 49.
