In the orignal I could steal both the shovel and the bow in less than 5 mins but in the remake it took me at least 20 mins of trying to get both! I think -Link's- THIEF's movement is a little slower in the remake making it so you have to be really spot on with the timing.
If memory serves right, the shop owner had a few seconds stop point looking away from the door after going in circles so many times. Gave up after that didn't work in this remake.

As a kid I did this by accident on the DX version. I didn’t understand why people called me thief and it made me feel bad.

I did this on the go with gameshark. I had the infinite hearts code on and the attack lasted forever. He couldn’t kill me and I couldn’t leave the shop

Even Link lampshaded this. For most items in that guy’s shop (bombs, arrows, hearts, etc), Link will have two options, “Buy” and “Don’t”. For the shovel and bow, however (as well as the stone piece), he’ll say “No way!” instead if he refuses to buy.

My favorite part is when you say: "'You got it for free. Are you proud of yourself?'" And you answer: "Yes I am!'" :)

lol The fairy doesn’t revive you if you die in this game. Only the secret ointment does that and no it doesn’t work. You get instant game over no matter what.

I remember doing this as a kid. My little kid mind thought that Link was a thief in every game up to that point, and that's why they were calling me that.

i literally grinded... for hours for the bow....
Why did you need to grind for hours? I learned how to get the purple rupee basically on the first try and I just kept doing that and since you pay 10 rupees for the minigame you just get the purple, exit, and come back in. Rinse and repeat. +40 Rupees every single time

Try it while having that dodge card* buff active (*the one where you will get revived after you die that you get from the lady near mambo's pond) always wondered if the death penalty will still happen (game over screen) or if the special revive buff will save link as usual and basically dodge the death penalty

Fun fact: If you save after stealing and go back in, after he kills you, you'll come back keeping the item you stole and you can go back in without continuously dying
I beat the whole game without stealing once and without dying. First playthrough.
It's not a grand feat since it was only Normal Mode, but it makes me feel good inside.

I've literally tried this 100 times and I cannot do it.
In the original the best way I find to do is to grab the item, walk behind the shop keeper, and then walk out. For me the best way is to not stop moving.
So if he can instantly kill anyone with hand beams why doesn't he save the land or whatever?

I've been working at this for a while, my best bet is to be moving diagonally toward the exit. It's the only way I've managed to get it consistently.
Nintendo made stealing from the shop entirely too hard in this remake. I’ve been trying to an hour and still unsuccessful.

Good one! You sure showed them! (If your name is THIEF to begin with, and you can just keep continuing, then it really doesn't matter, does it? Ha ha.) The developers probably programmed this in so they could test the game without having to spend so much time looking for funds.

if you steal the shovel, you pretty much forfeit the good ending if you havent died already.
you *need* the bow that appears later on. so even i you don't enter right away, you effectively started a time bomb to your inevitable life lost. if you *MUST* steal, wait to steal the bow. and from then on, DON'T return to the scene of the crime.

I just got the game finally and did this just cause I thought it’d be funny. Then everyone started calling me THIEF and I felt bad, so I started from my last manual save point which was right before the boss in Bottle Grotto just so it’d stop lmao

Imagine doing this at the very start of the game, forget you did it, playing through the rest of the game perfectly, skipping all text, dropping in for kicks right before you fight the final boss and dying.
At least the shopkeeper doesn't keep a pump-action 12 gauge under the counter. I bet gamers would be traumatized to see Link with half his face missing the rest of the game.😢
