One KITCHEN, 2 PLANS! Pros and Cons of an Island VS. a Peninsula Layout

  • I can't decide! Know the feeling? My kitchen plans were set till I saw a space I loved and then it's back to the drawing board!
Designing a space, whether it's the kitchen, pantry or living room, takes reps. You have to experiment with the floor plan, tweak the layout of the cabinets, move walls to make that custom pantry.
Whatever you want and need from your kitchen, it can be achieved through many design plans and different layouts for different cooks. The point, you gotta read your blueprints, ask your architect, designer and contractor. It's a process, but so worth it when you do it right!
    Best,
    Liz

For that particular house in the vid, I'd prefer an island. However, if I wanted more space in the den, then I'm for a peninsula.
I'm generally Team Peninsula, esp if the main kitchen counter is along one wall which also an exterior wall (i.e. If there was no den in the drawing & the kitchen overlooked a garden or some other view. Thanks for the vid!

This is one thing that baffled me about kitchens with seating at an island or peninsula which also has a dining table right beside it. What real purpose does it serve to have seating at the island or peninsula? The table is literally right beside those chairs, why not use the table for eating at? As Liz pointed out, it eats up space having both places to sit due to clearances to make it functional.

I like the island. It looks like you would have more breathing room. Also looks more inviting for the entry. I think it would be much more comfortable to enter and pass by a nook with a couple of chairs and small table than it would be to come in between the kitchen and dining room.

I found using a draftsman vs an architect allowed me to get results closer to what I wanted. Architects are artsy and want to put their stamp on everything whereas a draftsman seems more customer focused. Just my opinion.

@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa I’m quite late to the comments, but wanted to say that Florida State Statutes allow for residential design and construction drawings by persons who are not registered architects. In this instance, all structural elements must be signed off on by a registered structural engineer. Most designers work with one or more engineers on a regular basis and can assist you with obtaining these services. Additionally, if you can find an architect or residential designer who has actually worked in construction, you get the best of both worlds - someone who can assist with plans, but also someone who can tell you if it is realistic dollar-wise. I can’t tell you how many times clients show up with house plans they have paid $30k+ for asking for an estimate, only to find out that they can”t begin to afford (or don’t wish to) what was designed. Hope by now you have your remodel plans all worked out!

Love your videos and your logical approach to design. IMO, island is the better way to go because the peninsula design is dated in general. The flow/energy is restricted with a peninsula as you mentioned with carrying groceries in and having to put them on the counter or wall around. It also seems a little crowded The island opens the flow up all the way around. It mirrors the vault of the ceiling. The idea of the drawers with dishes placement is ideal. Looks more modern. The chairs and little table works well in the space and using them as breakfast nook, shoe putting on, conversation area while someone is in kitchen, etc. It’s a hybrid area that works well with the door having been moved.

Like the island much better. It lies foe better flow, a sweet area to sit and have coffee and separate dining. Penninsula blocks flow and over all design is old. More interesting to have island, sitting area and dining area close to kitchen but out of sight. Good luck snd share what you decide.

I prefer the island plan, it offers more flexibility. You didn’t say how many attend regular meals. Every holiday meal I have ever been to was a little crowded when everyone shows up. I would work on the plan that is very comfortable for every day use and feels maybe just a little crowded for the big holiday meals.

THANK YOU for making this video! I know now I am not crazy, as I've drawn and redrawn our kitchen layout! My one thought is with 6 chairs at the island, how often would you use the dining table? If it's a space that would get very little use, could you add 2 more chairs to the island and still keep the larger family room? If losing that storage is concerning, could you put in storage instead of the coffee chairs? Maybe make it a coffee/beverage bar with storage? I'm all for an island, and a 5x8 space is really nice to have and it just seems to flow better.

The island it is; the kitchen will be a central piece and it will feel more open
    Just a few ideas I get from looking at the island plan;
The living area seems large for just a tv area, maybe add a cosy table, a table for 6 can be small (5 by 3) or a round table, for breakfast, board games, reading...In my opinion a real table with comfortable chairs beats sitting at a countertop on a barstool.
The office can be in the bedroom with a seperation wall that still lets in light but also makes you feel like you are in a different area. Unless if the office and bedroom are not for the same person.
If the bathroom is enlarged to the left instead of the right, above the showerroom, you can have access from the hallway and the master bedroom. Then on the right side you can have a walk in closet that's bigger or combine it with an office.
The entrance is also big and it looks like you can see from the entrance all the way through the kitchen to the hallway. If you make the entrance smaller, with a door on the left side closer to the outside wall, then the flow into the kitchen is even better and you can make the island larger (the 2 ft you mentioned I'd use that in the island and have a cosy area to sit in the living area instead).
The wall to the dining room can then also be closer to the door...then either the dining area can be a more open space with the kitchen and living area or you can seperate it with a really nice door right next to the kitchen cabinets. If the dining area is even bigger you can use it for another activity as well.
If the island is even bigger then the stove can go in there. This in my opinion improves the workflow plus you would be facing the island with the barstools instead of a wall.

I'm late to the game here, but I like the island a lot better. However, I wouldn't have people sitting at it the way you have. Better to have two at the end, and three or four on the side where they would face the sink/dishwasher. In my opinion (and it's just my opinion), island sitting is for people who want to socialize with the cooks while they're working in the kitchen. It would be totally uncomfortable to be sitting at the island with your back to the dishwasher and sink, with the person working in the kitchen having to walk behind you. It would also be uncomfortable for the person working in the kitchen, having their space "invaded" by people getting in and out of those chairs/stools. If people want to sit around a table facing each other, then they should be at the dining table, not at the island. With my plan, there would also be a lot more room for drawers/storage opposite the dishwasher, which is exactly where you need it -- it's too inconvenient on the other side of the island.

If your primary mode of entry into the house means you’re going to be walking between the table and the peninsula and that just doesn’t work it’s too tight. Therefore the island is the only option.

  • @LaurenK5
    @LaurenK5 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

So because our existing brick flooring would be a nightmare to disrupt, we opted to keep our deep peninsula layout and just reshuffle appliances so that the peninsula is a big stretch of counter that functions like an island. However, we opted for no seating at the counter. Thought is that we can lay out food on the counter buffet style and the fam can prepare their plates from other side and and eat at the big table. No competing butts or chair legs. Eating at the table is old school, but I am embracing it. However, lighting is the challenge...and how I found you! Chandelier over table, 3 old world prismatic pendant lights over peninsula, and I'm struggling with recessed lighting. On the hunt for subtle recessed cans that will have a complementary incandescent feel and still help me SEE in a north facing kitchen :) Taking your advice on putting the wafers in other areas of the house, but agree we need to not skimp here since it's the heart of the home. Would love to know if you have suggestions on your favorite brands and models for a "cozier" kitchen.

Look for brands that have been around for a while. WAC, Juno, DALS, Halo (not box store versions) but it’s more about the color temp of the bulb if you’re concerned with warmth. Stick to lower than 3500-4000k but look for bulbs with high lumen output. The Kelvin is the color, the lumen is the amount of light. Plan for more with a north facing room and add dimmers!

Do you have any insight on GU10 vs. MS16 LED bulbs? Best for look and dimming? I went to two lighting stores yesterday and they looked at me like "why are you asking this? Porsche or Lamborghini? You can’t go wrong on either compared to the light quality on LED. The 2-3” size needs that high quality of a bulb to provide the light. You can get great quality 3-4” in the LED RECESSED variety for a better price point. WAC, Dals, Juno. No misspelling in the description of the product is a great start!🤣

Don’t know where you landed but what i don’t like with the peninsula at 13:00 is that there’s two trapped corners (where you have to put a lazy Susan or magic corner or whatever. These are the most useless of cabs. I’d put a door to the lanai on the back wall, do the island plan but offer the island toward the door wall and go with a French doors on the bigger opening to the lanai.
As for what was wrong with the architect’s island plan, he had the stove opposite the sink which you say is a no-no.

I have a peninsula in a 10 by 15 ft kitchen but the wall behind it is mostly storage with the fridge close to the corner cabinet.
No one has to cook/prep on that side and with this fridge placement there is zero "traffic" behind the peninsula.
Even then I have about 6 ft of space. The stove is in the peninsula, the sink is on the wall next to it.
The other side of the peninsula only has 2 barstools and some more storage.
      ...
By far the best layout that was possible with the most storage and countertop space.
Also love the 2 super susans with 3 levels each. Each corner easily replaces a 36 inch cabinet with drawers. Many advisors tell you to block off a corner, only listen if you have a large kitchen...

  • @JeanneKinland

I do not like either plan because I think if you have the room, every home should have an entry way that provides a place for people to hang up their coats, a place for shoe storage, the kids can put down the backpacks from school. You see that is why we need to know the family size, the age of the people living there, how often do you entertain people, ect... Regardless of the family size, every entry way should include a place to set down your stuff: purse, keys, coats, ect... Change out your shoes. Some people don't like to wear their outside shoes inside the house.
