- Kitchen Island Planning Tips || **What you need to know for your perfect Kitchen Island**
Welcome back! In my last video, I brought you some input on different Kitchen Island Designs to find your initial island design concept. This video is like a part 2 and focuses on building standards so you can plan your island correctly. Sizes, walkways, seating heights and depths, and the biggest question, can I even fit an island in my space?!
When you watch the calculating section on understanding if you can fit an island in your space, here are the numbers again: Measure overall depth of the room - 25.5" for Perimeter (- another Perimeter if needed) - 42" Walkway (For single cook, or 48" walkway for two cooks) - 42" for the second Walkway on the other side of the island = Space you have left for your kitchen. The smallest island depth is usually 38.25" which includes a 12" overhang for seating.

Hi Kerstin. I hope you can see the question about kitchen island. I am trying to use the Bellmont 1600 drawer base cabinet to build the island.
1st question. Is it possible to install a GFCI on the side of the cabinet without interfering the drawers? If not, Should I install a spacer between the side of the cabinet and then the side panel. Is a 2" spacer enough? Or can I install the GFCI at the back of the cabinet? Will it interfering the closing of the drawers?
2nd question. If I want to have 15" overhang counter top on the 24" base cabinet, I have to install a L bracket. Do I have to build a pony wall behind the cabinet to do that? Or I can install a 2x6 at the inside back of the cabinet, and mount the L bracket there? It is possible with a frameless Bellmont 1600?

Hi and thanks for watching!! We had electricians install the outlet on the sides of drawer bases without any issues. You can check with whoever your Bellmont dealer is and ask for the drawer clearances. There is a whole chart with references. Depending on your local juristiction you may not be allowed by code to put the outlet on the back side "IF" you have a countertop overhang. I would check with your electrician. You do not need a pony wall behind the cabinet. The only time I have a pony wall is when I have plumbing going into the island so I am able to keep the most space inside of my cabinets. So using the L-bracket without the pony wall will be perfectly fine 🙂Yes, totally doable with the 1600 line 🙂

We’re building our first new home. I’m having a handmade butcher block island made. We can’t wait to see it. Should be next week. What do you think about butcher block islands? I don’t see many. But that’s ok. My kitchen will be different then others. Putting beautiful granted on the counter top. It’s a huge kitchen. So excited.

Hello Kerstin, thank you for the informative video. I see the small island depth can be 39" including the overhang of 12". My question what can be the ideal length of the island for a 39" width?
Hi Sudha and thanks for watching!! The length I would say 6-8 feet is nice and feels good with that depth. But it all depends on the space and how much room you have for the island too. I hope this helps!
My contractor cut into my waterfall bc of basement door hittingthe counter. There is enough room for walkway. Now that it is cut can it be fixed to get the full waterfall again
Ouff tough question without seeing it. I suggest taking a picture and talking to some local countertop fabricators on what they say.
What program was used to draw the kitchen floor plan? Thx
Most kitchen designers use a program called 2020. It's about $2,500 per year for the prescription. If you need something to draw a sketch for your own project, I suggest using the fre web tool by Nobilia right here: planer.nobilia.de/is/apps/idealspaces/?locale=en-gb#inspiration
Hi Kerstin. Awesome video!! I have question. I am building an island that has a 93” counter. I am putting a 24” drawer microwave and I want to put a two drawer cabinet and three drawer cabinets in there. How would you design it so it is functional and looks good for the eye? I know if I design it with all three drawers would like nicer but I like to have a two drawer cabinet!! Struggling to find a good option!!!
Hi Cuca and thanks for watching!! OK If your counter is 93 minus overhangs you really have 91" of cabinet space to work with. If you center the 24" drawer you can surround with a 33" cabinet left and right and be ok with doing one a 3 drawer and one a 2 drawer. Sometimes it's not all perfectly symmertrical and it's fine! In the kitchen that actually works well for you function goes over fashion in my opinion. But you could also sit the balance 24" units left and right of island. You would have a 1.5" panel + 24" DW 2 drawer + 39" 3 drawer + 24" 2 drawer and end with another 1.5" panel. All up to you but any cabinet you sit next to the DW drawer I suggest having a finished end to be on the safe side. Good luck lady!

Great video! I have a question about your layout at the 12 minute mark. This is similar to what I'm trying to design. I have a semi u-shaped kitchen. The top wall is 84 in the outside wall is 174 in and I want to add a 10 to 12 foot wall on the bottom. Fridge is at the top sink and range on the outside wall. Here's my question, can I fit an island in there? I was thinking 4 by 6 feet, and if I do is it weird to have the narrow and close to the range and sink, not that I have any option. I also want to squeeze in two seats at the end. It all seems tight but it's hard for me to visualize it. Should I leave the sitting out all together? Should I make the island smaller? The top wall also has a dining Nook, and that's what takes up the rest of the space on that wall. The bottom all is my own invention and I was thinking I would maybe make it 15 to 20 inch deep stacked Cabinetry for Pantry purposes only. As matter fact of reason I'm putting that wall in is to add pantry space and also some separation in our 'open-concept'
Hi Haydee, thanks for watching lady! If you follow the calculation you should have enough depth for a 38.25" deep island which includes 12" overhang. I may take the overhang down to 10". Also if the island runs in front of your refrigerator, I highly suggest switching to a counter depth refrigerator model. It makes all the difference for having good walkways in your kitchen and don't feel cramped. I hope this helps and good luck with your kitchen!
Yes, Counter depth all the way! I'm even looking for one with no handles sticking out.
I was thinking the seating would be down the far end of the island opposite the sink/range wall and out of traffic flow. But then its narrow for 2 ppl. I'm sooo conflicted. Maybe I should nix the seating, or shorten the island. 🤦🏻♀️

Hey thanks for watching!! I can't tell for sure what color it is but it's a quartz in a polished finish. Maybe try looking at Villa Noir by Caesarstone or Amadeus by Pental Quartz. I hope this helps!! 🙂
Hi Kerstin. For islands with an 12" overhang on the back and one adjacent side, is 12" the key measurement or is it the overhang of the corner which would be close to 17"? √(12^2+12^2)? Do you have a table of all the materials and their overhang limits? Thanks!
I dont' have a table but really 12" is the most used overhang on islands as most quartz countertops support for this kind of overhang. Some are stronger and support up to 15" overhang. But you can do either size in between if it works better with your layout. Thanks for watching!!
Hi 👋 need some help.. my overall space wall to wall is 199". After I minus all... I'm left with 64". You're saying that is size of kitchen remaining. Can I still have a 98" (sit 4) and 48" deep island on this space? Not sure what 64" remaining number means.
Hi Andrea, thanks for tuning in!! You would need a minimum of 36" for walkways before and behind your island. So with 64" you wouldn't have enough space for an island. I hope this helps!!

Hallo , ich habe eine frage !! I want to build a kitchen island but my cabinet person wants to put both dishwasher and sink in the front of the island( where width is)and then have the length of the island for the seating section. I never saw that like that is that a mistake ? The width of the island will be in front of the stove.
Hey there!! Technically it can be done and it really depends on your layout and space what you have to work with. Just keep in mind if you squeeze the sink and the dishwasher in the shorter side of the island you might not have a lot of countertop landing space on both sides of the sink. Sehr toll, ja !! I thought same thing but do you have a solution for that ? I mean the dishwasher and sink kind work together for dishes but if we put one one the side it will also looks imbalanced . Thanks for your reply 😊

It really depends on your kitchen triangle. Sometimes your island is a prep area and it ends up facing the refer wall. In most cases though the island front would face the cooking wall. Thanks for tuning in!

Great video. Q. When there’s a half/pony wall, is the minimum framing width the width of a 2x4 (3.5 inches), or does it ever go narrower (with proper protection for electrical wiring)?
Great question! The 2x4 yes can actually run at 3.5" width due to how wide your 2x4 ends up being. This is the most common size but if you can narrow it down to only run electrical go for it. Just keep in mind that most people ending up mounting the electrical plate against the half wall and that has a certain width too. Thanks for watching!
you can turn a 2 x4 sideways and mount an electrical box that way to save space!
My opinion personally is that adding an island to a small space only makes it feel smaller. So if you have to ask whether or not you can fit one into your Kitchen, it's probably better just opt for a rolling cart or something similar. Trying to force in an island that takes up too much space will make it feel cramped, and is the opposite of an improvement. While renovating, I didn't intend to add an island from the start. But now I think I will have to add an island at some point, because the amount of walk space from one side of the kitchen to the other. Each side is so far from the other that an island in the middle makes the most sense. This is the type of scenario where it makes sense to add an island.
I am 6 ft and a 36 inch high counter that is with countertop is too low . what should the total height of my island be
Hey thanks for tuning in! Just a slight raise to 39" total with countertops should help you feel more comfortable. It's easy to get this done once you use a cooktop instead of a range too. I hope this helps!
I will still do a breakfast bar height only because of the stove that is there and kids, however, I would love to know about a buffet cabinet that I have and want to turn it into my island and have an overhang on it, my question to you is, will I need support for a 10'' overhang of quartz and will the cabinet tip over if I was to do an overhang.

Hi Javah and thanks for tuning in! It depends on how deep the existing buffet cabinet is. If you have 21" or 24" in depth on that cabinet, the 10" overhang will work without an additional overhang. The island should also be mounted to the floor for added security. Hope this helps!

How difficult is it to lower my bar height island to standard height?
Hi Oliver, thanks for tuning in! If you are replacing your countertops, it's not that big of a problem, especially if you have laminate. Is your taller half wall (Pony wall) behind your island wrapped in drywall or do you need to find matching cabinet panels? Just note you will need new countertops after this. @@oliversantos309 Actually most of the time it' s easier to just tear down and replace than trying to modify what you have in place. In most cases you can't match the existing cabinets etc. anyhow. If you were to replace it to a square island just keep in mind it will affect your flooring. Most spec homes have flooring not running underneath the cabinets, if you change your foot print you may expose subfloor. Maybe check if you have more back up floor or combine the island update with a new flooring update. Take care!

Hii me again!! Need some help after taking notes from video. So planning to do my island in quartz 12" overhang. 99" 8ft (to sit 4 people) the measurements i was given including overhang is 60" is this considered standard? Measurements i was given is 99x60 and 36" height. Is this all standard?
Hi Andrea! I would have to see your layout to understand if it's correct. If you only have one run of cabinets and overhang on the back 60" is too deep but I'm wondering if you have a second row in the back? Otherwise yes 36" will be your finish height after the tops are installed and that's standard.
@@TheMaterialBar L shape kitchen on inside of island - not overhang side.. counters, cabinets. On the overhang side where the chaos would go... is my wall ...maybe six feet space... not sure if this gives you a visual of the layout... sorry I'm so new to this don't know if I'm using correct terms ☺

What overhang do you recommend for porcelain slab with waterfalls?
Hi Adriane, thanks for watching. All porcelain manufacturers are different and I would check with the manufacturer to tell you what they recommend as the max overhang without any additional supports needed. The website usually tells you. I hope this helps. thanks!
