What's remarkable and helpful about this video and others on your page is that you show your planning process and corresponding jobsite photos. It's not a tour of someone else's professional portfolio photos with commentary. It's useful to watch the problem-solving and then see what that turns into.

Glad I saw this. I'm in social housing and waiting for a.new kitchen coming. Details so far are an improvement on the old one. Raising the top cabinets to allow a shelf underneath will make the space a lot more functional for me, without creating any extra work. Its renter friendly in that removing the extra shelf and making the walls good is even easier than putting the shelf in. I have 3 single wall cupboards too shallow for dinner plates. A double base unit under the sink, 1 base drawer.unit and one corner unit - this will be changed for a better access door and some kind of pull out/lazy susan. I added floor to ceiling extra shelves to rake a lot of stuff, still not best organised. High units, extra shelf but no extra gadget space will improve it. The kitchens you show for the equivalent 3 bedroom home seem enormous, very green with envy here.

We raised our three kids in our current four bedroom, two storey home, with separate living room, family room, dining room and eat in kitchen. When we had the whole family (brothers, nephew, our grown kids and their kids, and everyone’s spouses, at least 20 people total) over for my mom’s 91st birthday last winter, there was no place to be all together. This is my beef with compartmented floor plans. While it was great with young kids, it just doesn’t work for us now. Holiday gatherings are hard, we can’t fit the kids and grandkids in the living room to open gifts at Christmas. We’re just getting ready to build our retirement house, and after 33 years, we’ll finally have an open plan kitchen, dining and living room. It will allow us to have the whole family together for holidays and birthdays, and make the modest (under 1600 sq. ft.) space feel bigger than it actually is. On a positive note, the resurgence of the separate dining and living rooms may improve the marketability of our current home when we are ready to sell.

That was the most bat sh*t crazy video I've watched. Brother comparing lights to capitalism and communism is wild. You just spit ball a bunch of words that sound all philosophical but offer no actual advice. Ultimate takeaway was figure it out yourself in your own place. What is more wild is the people that are eating this video up like they have learned something new. Now you get a bunch of people that will throw lights right up next to their wall or directly on something and create awful shadows and accentuate poor walls, craftsmanship, etc. This page is a hard never have youtube recommend again. Came here to maybe learn something new, instead met some crazy lady who actually thinks her wild mind is cool and hip. Oh brother you need a hard reality check, no chance you have a normal group of friends or family with how you talk.

I’ve been preaching this for a decade. But this is just half of the story. If you measure your house wiring with a DE meter (such as Stetzeriser), you will get a much bigger picture of how much harm these LED lights are doing. Most of them (and I’ve tested different “brands” from Amazon) create excruciating levels of noise in the circuitry. Whether or not that noise is affecting the health of the humans inhabiting the dwelling is up for you to decide. Personally I have zero doubt that it does and not in some minor way. Just like the temperature of the light, which is also a type of frequency.

How about the refrigerator manufacturers make their product a more standard size. Use more efficient insulation and decrease the depth so that there is more room in the kitchen. Making the cabinets deeper doesn't help the issue it just tries to cover it up. Why make refrigerators so many different dimensions? Find a couple that actually work.

Great tips! Quick question on the single-height island power outlets... Doesn't the new 2023 electrical code forbid under-counter outlets? Have most designers started to incorporate this change into their island design plans? The advice to talk with your electrician still holds, but I think all single-height island outlets need to be pop-ups now.

My pull-out garbage-can holder started to fail after about 10 years. It turns out that the clowns who installed it attached the slides to the particle-board lower shelf using wood screws and epoxy. I re-attached it with molly bolts. Permanent fix. I also had a failure of the hinge on the tilt-out sponge shelf in front of the sink. I fixed it with a new spring. The spring I found was not very strong, so I installed a magnetic latch. End of problem. The lesson: some of these problems, while real, can actually be fixed with a little effort.

Also, put the exhaust fan in the shower. It's the only way to effectively remove the steam. And if you can, put the toilet between the door and the exhaust fan so the air being pulled from under the door passes the toilet and grabs odors on its way to the exhaust.

A word about those rain style shower heads. But first, my wife and I love your videos! The problem I find with rain style shower heads is that the water is coming straight down on you instead of at you at an angle. When the water is coming straight down, the only way to have the water on you is to be directly under it. Not great if you don't want your head under the water. When the water is coming at you at an angle, you can adjust how much of your body is in the water stream by moving further or closer to the shower head. Can't do that with a rain head. Just my experience. Thanks for listening!

I used to design kitchens for a large well-known company before retiring. I often saw the work of other companies whose designers were negligent in advising clients on the seating height of their island in reference to their bar stool function. The stools they picked were unusable at the bar because no one could fit their legs under the bar, let alone cross their legs. Too many designers are willing to give a client what they want without informing them of their choice 'cons'. That is why people hire them, not just for design, but to help with the important detail they are likely to miss. Just found you! Kudos! 🥳

The other issue is that if you don't like the look 5 years from now you will be changing the entire fixture not just the trim.

I would like a beam that sits on top of the rafter the floods light upward and the room has a nice gentle glow. I want a high-quality light. All these LEDs are killing our eyes. Can you recommend any fixtures for rafters and vaulted ceiling areas? I don’t need to see the fixture. I just want to light the vaulted ceiling.

Maybe a monopoint fixture? Most bar uplights are going to be LED. But the worrisome aspects of blue light emission are minimized by the light not directed towards you (hitting the ceiling instead) and if you stick with warm 2700-3000 glow that you want, that also helps!

I don’t have any windows or skylights in my bathroom and surprisingly have never missed it outside of when I’ve lost power. I have a wet rated pot light in the tub/shower combo, two wall sconces on either side of the mirror over the vanity, and another wall sconce that sticks out further above a different mirror (old wood medicine cabinet door over a storage niche and toilet. The middle of the room has a ceiling fan without a light.

Timely, and thanks. When I finish my DesignSherpa-guided kitchen rebuild, I am starting on my tiny bathroom. I had not thought about the blocking for grab bars and was looking at another way of shower entry, which involved a low lip, not any more (Mwah-hah-hah-hah)

Great as always! Great idea about the blockers (who knew) and the small ties = more grout = less slippage. I don’t like grout so I was going to do large tiles but will reconsider. So enjoy your videos they are sooo educational and love the blunt honesty, dont talk around the bush style!!! 😊!

Thanks for watching! You can use big tiles (I despise grout) just make sure they have some grit or tooth to them!
